    Pixar Animation Studios, commonly known as Pixar is a computer animation studio owned by Disney. it began in 1979 as part of the Lucasfilm computer division, known as the Graphics Group before Disney purchased it in 2006.
    Pixar has produced around 22 feature films, beginning with Toy Story (1995), which was the first-ever computer-animated feature film; its most recent film was Onward (2020). Toy Story 3 (2010), Finding Dory (2016), Incredibles 2 (2018), and Toy Story 4 (2019) are all among the 50 highest-grossing films of all time,
    The studio has also produced dozens of short films.
    so how Pixar as a studio was able to create all these amazing animation movies but most importantly what is the software behind the magic they are able to create.

    Can confirm that Pixar would never have Presto (or Marionette, for that matter) out in the wild, been told directly from a Pixar dev that support would be a nightmare on a good day. For any students keen on interning at Pixar, they recommend that they cut their teeth on Maya, as (apparently) transitioning to Presto is easier if you have Maya experience. Other interesting tidbit, back before Autodesk pillaged the majority of the CG software ecosystem, when Maya was made by Alias|Wavefront, A|W made the Maya source code (which would have been somewhere around v2 back then, I think..?) available to Pixar so that they could write the prman-Maya bridge to be as seamless as possible.

      For animation internships, maya actually isn't listed as a requirement and they'll make their judgements based on 2D reels as well! From personal experience, they'd be happy to train a 2D animator for Presto - inspirationtuts mentioned it's very artist friendly. But knowledge of maya certainly does help a lot!

    Alias-wavefront was the industry standard before pixar, it was doing incredible cg for its time, it used to run on silicon graphics hardware which cost 100s of thousands for hardware and thousands for software. Blender will get latest render an in December as both commercial and limited personal editions, and they are very much interested in using blender with renderman for smaller projects and just fun, as they are very much python based themselves in the way they are moving ahead.

    USD is fully implemented now in Houdini. Commercial software is always in better position as the dev teams are bigger and have access to many use cases of their clients. I bet in 5 years there will be only 3 software worth learning: Blended, C4D and Houdini. The rest is total crap and stays there mostly due to inertia. And I also bet that one day Pixar will switch to Houdini which they already use for some things. The only weak point of Houdini is character animation which will be patched once KineFX modules get matured. And regarding Renderman, for years it was almost unusable in smaller teams, the latest versions are far better in being easy to use but they also had to rewrite it heavily for that. So not everything that Pixar produce is the best and far beyond everything else. They are for sure pioneers and they contributed a lot to animation and 3D in general and Catmull is a great and wise man, no doubt about it.

      I agree Houdini is going to be the next big software because of its ability to produce things procedurally. So instead of making just one chair model, you can design a program within Houdini to spit out several thousand variations of chairs. However, the problem is the vast majority of 3D artists find Houdini scary and hard to learn (since it's got more of a programming workflow), and I hate to be that person but a lot of the programmers that are great at using Houdini don't have that artistic touch. Yes occasionally you have some artists that are good at Houdini and occasionally you have programmers that are really good at art. But that's very rare. So I'm interested to see how the industry is going to tackle that issue.

    Something you missed here are the artists. Do you not think Pixar and Disney have gone to EXTREME lengths to get the best animation artists, the most talented, the most skilled and most experienced artists in the world? There is an old saying amongst artists. "An immature artist blames his tools". I personally look to that first Neanderthal who, sitting in his cave, decided to draw a mastadon on his cave wall in charcoal from his firepit. He didn't say, "If only I had a computer!" I think that the artists at Pixar would have done the job just as well, maybe not as fast, but definitely just as well with Maya.

    Ok, here's something I have wondered about for a long time: what program do developers use to actually create a program like Presto? How does one go about creating a whole entire program from scratch? Wouldn't there have to be some other sort of baseline, bottom level program to even allow for the creation of a new program? I mean, you can't just pull a software like Presto out of thin air, so where does it come from? What is the process of creating something like Presto? Does that make sense? In a more broad sense, who programs the softwares that allow Pixar to write their own new programs? Does such a "software for making another software program" even exist, or is it all made by people just writing lines of binary code in a terminal and somehow being able to make a new program or something like that? It's kinda like a "chicken or egg" situation in my brain. It doesn't make sense to me how someone would be able to create a new program without some already-existing program being used to create that new program, if that makes sense. I'm trying to phrase this question in a bunch of different ways so hopefully one of them will make sense for what I am asking lol. Basically, who writes the programs that are then used to write other programs? Where does it all start at the very base level?

    • @TopsonNoble
      @TopsonNoble Год назад +1

      To answer your question, as far as I know (and this is me talking from my basic knowledge in coding), yes, you do need a programming software that has the ability to compile codes on your computer machine to be able to develop a new program. An example of such programming software is Visual Studio Code, and it usually comes with an inbuilt program preset examples. So, I can download and install VS Code on my computer and it's compilers, then I can take one of the preset programs in VS Code, and modify the code to suit my needs, then when I compile the modified codes, I can develop my own tool that way and give it a name, so that tool does what I specifically wrote my code for it to do... For example, I can use a preset on VS code and rewrite the code such that what it does is to do addition and subtraction of any numbers I input to it, now when I compile this code, I basically create an executable file (.exe) that whenever I launch it, all it ever does is to add and subtract numbers and generate the results for me... Now for computer graphics, it gets even way more complicated, but the basic idea is the same... So, on the basic level, you do need a programming software (e.g visual studio code) that has the ability to compile executable files for you to be able to develop a new tool, and the programmers who specializes on developing new tools or software are software developers... Those are the kind of guys that develop these sort of tools for Pixar etc...
      I hope this explanation helps

    • @TopsonNoble

      In addition to my response above, another thing you do have to understand is the very basic way of how computer works. On a microscopic level of things, the only thing computer machine understands is 0s and 1s (like logic gates, 1 means open and 0 means close). Now, in order for we human beings to be able to communicate with computer and tell it to do anything we want, we need to find a way for the computer to interpret whatever command we give it as zeros and ones (0 and 1). That is, we type in a word or a command that we understand, and the computer will interpret and understand them as a combination of zeros and ones.This is where programming language comes in. There are so many types of programming languages that exists, but basically, what those programming language do is to serve as a medium with which we human beings communicate with the computer machine. Now, every programming languages has their own unique sets of rules which we need to learn, so that when we type a command in a programming language, the computer will understand such command and then perform whatever we need it to do. If we do not obey these set of rules, then the computer won't understand us and we will get errors. So, the fundamental of coding is, using a set of rules of a programming language to tell the computer to do anything want, that is called input commands. Then vice versa, for the computer to talk back to us in a way we understand, the computer will give us outputs which we can see on a monitor screen for example. A collection of outputs from the computer that does what we need it to do based on the various input commands we give it are usually collected together in a compiled executable file (created by a compiler by the computer).
      This is how I like to look at it

      @@TopsonNoble thanks for the in depth response! So my remaining question is where does something like Visual Studio Code come from? Who creates that? I mean, it’s not just natively on a computing system, right? Is VSC just a collection of binary code as well? Like I said, it feels like a “chicken or egg” situation to me. Where does that very baseline stuff like VSC come from? But thanks again for the response, everything else in the process now makes sense to me!
