  • Pixar broke new ground when it created "Toy Story" in 1995, but from there it still had a long way to go to perfect 3D animated characters. Over the years, Pixar's animators would figure out everything from proper human movement to skin to hair. They figured out how to smooth out skin in "Geri's Game." Then, when "The Incredibles" rolled around, they created new simulations to help control Mr. Incredible's muscle movements and Violet's long hair while also finding more accurate ways to light human skin. Violet's hair would later pave the way for long-haired characters like Colette in "Ratatouille" and the curly-haired heroine Merida of "Brave." Meanwhile, Pixar's shading tools would allow the animators to add even more striking details to their human characters' faces, while innovative new methods of animating crowd scenes came about in "Incredibles 2" and "Toy Story 4."

The decision in Toy Story to only show parts of the humans, usually the lower parts, also improves the story too. Because it brings the audience down to the level and perspective of the toys, making them feel more human and intimate.

For Ratatouille it must have been the part when Remy ran behind this insanely realistic-looking loaf of bread. For Monsters Inc. it must have been when Sully fell into the snow door and as he lay on the ground, every single strand of his hair moved independently in the wind and you could see snowflakes gathering in his fur. One thing that is notable is that Pixar went the more stylized route with their humans after Toy Story, while other companies, such as Dreamworks, gave us some of those uncanny valley characters that are a bit disturbing (although they later adopted more cartooney artstyles in later features). I think the lesson is that trying to animate and design 3D realistic humans always look a bit off; you gotta sprinkle that with a bit of creativity and stylization to help convey feelings in a slightly more exaggerated manner.

One thing I really respect and appreciate about Pixar’s animation is that even though we now have to technology to render humans really realistic, they stylize their characters. But also in ways that actually reflect the personalities of those characters. Like how Mr. Fredrickson is a very square, boxy shaped old man, which kinda reflects how he acts. I feel like other animation studios don’t put that much detail into the actual character design.

The "Uncanny Vally" effect isn't completely an animation issue, it's also a human sight perception/brain recognition issue; when we see something trying to imitate us our brains tell us that something is wrong/weird with what we're seeing, and that we shouldn't be seeing it; So no matter how realistic you make animation, someone will find it creepy or unsettling and some things will have to be even a little bit stylized to prevent the "Uncanny Vally" reaction.

And as an Asian, i always loved my hair to be long when i was little. I even wore headbands to primary school because i was inspired by her! So seeing how far Pixar came with their animation over the years, is just an amazing thing to witness. The Incredibles 2018 sequel really stepped it up with everything. And of course, seeing Violet's hair physics especially in 11:18 was so cool to see. It's not just the perfect consistent strands like before. It was so realistically messed up, it reminded me of my own morning hair 😂

They moved at the end of Toy Story, those things weren't reusable back in the day, plus stars got Very popular in the late 90s (I had them, they glowed in the dark) and they represented outer space, like Buzz. This is why you should pay attention in English class, kids.
