      if you would watch the 6 part series on how microtechs are made you would understand why they are priced they way they are. 100% usa made, and and a ton of work goes into every knife they make. hand finished and inspected with a fine tooth comb. sure, being manmade eventually something will fail. but they make amazing knives!

    • @Da_Thing_Should_Not_Be
      @Da_Thing_Should_Not_Be 11 месяцев назад

      Overpriced you say... I think not, considering that each is hand made. Try machining all those bits and pieces to fit precisely with no jamming and still slide freely as it should. Each piece has to fit perfectly to function properly and last a long time. I've had to service a Chinese knockoff for a guy I know a few times already. One of the main problems... The track the blade runs in gets jammed up with gunk from his pockets... I know that knifes internals better than the owner does...

    • @shanek6582
      @shanek6582 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@Da_Thing_Should_Not_Be there's a ton of money invested in the CNC machines that produce the parts they have to recover, there's time in setting up the raw materials in the jigs and money in the finishing process coating the pieces, I know all that has to be profitable but as far as the manpower that goes into assembling those pieces from parts bins, I doubt it takes more than a minute to assemble. All the parts have individual finishes, there is no "hand fitting " like an old custom 1911 a gunsmith built.
      I cant fault anyone too much for buying what they like though, I've bought several Randall knives in my time lol.

    "We understand that some customers may prefer to maintain their own knives. Sharpening your knife does not automatically void the warranty. The warranty will remain in effect so long as the blade is not improperly sharpened and the handle is not damaged or stripped due to disassembly, determined at our discretion. Sep 7, 2020" MICROTECH

  • @themittymak

    • @rex101898
      @rex101898  4 года назад +2

      I mean it might work, but I'm not sure I would recommend messing with it. I would start by dripping a little fine oil down into the knife through the hole in the front and seeing if that helps. The slide to launch the blade will always have a stiff spring, but if it really is that bad I would consider contacting Microtech or selling it.

I mean he said he couldn't reach them which is impossible if you just go to their site and click contact us. Lol it's as easy as opening a support ticket and then telling them what the issue is. And everytime I've contacted them for servicing in sharpening and cleanings ( never had one break or not work) they typically get back to me within 12hrs at the latest but it's more like an hour or two even at night. So he's not trying or he's not going about it correctly.

You know they say that these type of knives are novelty knife and not really used for self-defense or anything else really. The theory behind the longer handle and tang is that it will be stronger and harder to break.

  • @Hagemann666
    @Hagemann666 11 месяцев назад +2

    Great explanation! When I was a much younger man I was fascinated by dual-action OTF knives. I'd only ever seen them in movies and they seemed almost magical. I couldn't comprehend how a switchblade/automatic knife could store the energy to both deploy and retract the blade without those forces fighting one another. When I was in Italy in the early 1990s I purchased a cheap one from a knife shop and immediately took it apart. It worked on the same principal as the MUCH more expensive Microtechs.
    The key is that, unlike a traditional out-the-side automatic or single-action OTF, a dual-action OTF isn't storing energy in a spring when the knife is retracted OR when it's deployed. You are loading the spring as you push the thumb switch which is why it takes a bit of actual effort to activate a dual-action OTF. Almost everyone I hand my Microtech to struggles to actuate it until I explain that you have to use some muscle.
    I would go so far as to argue that dual-action OTF knives shouldn't be classified as switchblades. Most switchblade laws state that the blade must be under spring tension when stored. That is NOT the case with dual-action OTF knives. They're much more like assisted-openers. But most states are finally beginning to repeal the silly, reactionary anti-switchblade laws of the 1950s.

    • @jeffkerr807
      @jeffkerr807 2 года назад

      The blade has to make it all the way to the stopping block. The spring is only so strong. If the forward motion of the blade encounters more resistance than the spring can overcome it will stop it from locking in place. Basically it comes down to the strength of the spring. It is not capable of flinging the blade forward with enough force to penetrate objects. Just enough strength to move the blade itself. This is purposely done for obvious reasons. Which is why it is stuoid that they are illegal in many places
