Installing a Pentair 98209800 High Flow Relief Valve on a Sta-Rite System 3 Filter & Tips & Tricks

- One of my favorite cartridge filters is the Sta-Rite System 3 filter. They also make this in a De filter version and it is probably one of the most durable and longest lasting filters on the market. But the weak point of this filter is the very outdated and poorly functioning air relief valve. For such a large filter the air bleeder is very small and pathetically weak. But there is a simple $30 upgrade that you can make that will turn the air relief into a real beast.
Sta-Rite and Pentair are the same company now and Pentair makes a series of cartridge filters known as the Clean & Clear and Clean & Clear Plus. They make an air relief valve that is awesome, and wouldn’t you know it, it fits perfect on the System 3 filter. Pentair 98209800 High Flow Manual Relief Valve Replacement Pool and Spa Filter. You would simply remove the entire air relief on top of the Sta-Rite filter and insert the 98209800 right in its place.
You don’t need any actual tools to do this, just an adjustable wrench and some Teflon Tape for the pressure gauge. Make sure pool timer is off and will not come back on during the process. Remove the old air relief assembly on top of the Sta-Rite filter and then thread in the 98209800, no Teflon Tape needed at that threaded area. Then apply Tephlon Tape to the pressure gauge and thread it into the Air Relief (after you remove the plastic plug). Now when you go to let air out of the filter it will take a matter of seconds and all of the air will be evacuated rapidly.
It is as simple as that and your Sta-Rite System 3 filter has been upgraded. It is important to let the air out of the filter after cleaning the filter and after you clean the pump basket. This helps the pump prime easily and prevents air from getting trapped in the lines after the equipment turns off. You may notice air bubbles coming out of the return lines if you don’t do this. The 98209800 Relief Valve will make sure no air is in filter and I recommend this upgrade at your earliest convenience.

Thanks so much for what you do. This exactly the. I’d I needed cheers!!
So……..can I use this air release valve on any filter tank? Whether it’s a Pentair or Hayward?
Have you cleaned any Hot springs spas? I just got a new client who owns a “hot springs” hot tub (salt tube) and I do t know how to clean his salt cell. Do you have any videos on how to take care of this salt cell?
My brand new sta rite 3's pressure gauge tee snapped last night, I replaced it with brass tee and a brass drain cock from the hardware store for under $10. Do you see any issues with using this vs pool specific equipment?
Should work fine.
I have a pentair System 2 PLDE 36. Will this work on my filter?
Hard to say. depends on the thread size. Can't tell from the online photos.
When releasing air should the pump be off or on ?
On.
Thanks for putting this vid, my father handeled maintainence for my pool, but he passed away due to cancer and I am left with to do this, I had no idea how to do this until I ran into this youtube video! Thanks!
Sorry for your loss and yes this video showed me how to take care of my pool too 😀.
Thanks for this! I just replaced mine on my Pentair (an old Purex Triton 4000 Series filter). The gauge was so bad after 22 years that there was no needle left inside.
I turned off my pump, opened the relief valve until the air stopped blowing, unscrewed the old one, screwed in the new one, then left the valve open while I turned the pump on. As soon as it started spraying water I closed the relief valve and the pressure went up to 10. Everything looks great!
I have the same gauge as you... (some Chinese knock-off it looks like) from Amazon. Is 10 PSI normal (our filter was cleaned about a month ago).
Dude thanks for this . Those sta-rite cheap ones totally blow , always breaking .
Not only that but I can never get any air out of them...
DUDE. you the chillest! THX!
thing i don't like about this valve is that the female threads are plastic, while the gauge has a metal thread, you over tighten just slightly, the plastic valve cracks. It's never a good thing when the male thread is metal while the female is plastic, i wish they make the female thread in brass just like the gauge
Always a helpful well done vid, thanks for the tip to avoid having to prime pump.
Sure thing. The original air bleeder is pretty weak - I love these Air Relief Valves for that very reason. 👍
Thanks, will change mine .
They need a new pump lid u cant see the water lol
will this fit on a STA-RITE system 3 model S7M400?
Yes.
Great advice!
Great video! I have the same valve. Is it normal that my startup( brand new filter cartridges)psi is at 20, and it will rise to 30 when I switch to spa mode. Thanks
That is normal due to the back pressure created in spa mode. Basically the high PSI is do to the fact that flow is restricted going to your spa vs your pool. Like in your shower, more water will come out if you are filling the tub vs using the shower head.
@@SPL thanks! I was worry that it went up by 10psi so quickly
Will this fit my sm/smbw 2060?
I've seen them on there.
How do you lube the o-ring so it turns/twist easier?
You can use magic lube - they sell it at your local pool store or online.
Thanks for replying. I do have the lube but not sure how to separate top part to get to the o-ring. Is there a video on this that you have illustrated such?
Thanks for your great videos & help.
Great video!
I have this same relief valve. My question is, It's tightened where gauge is not where I need it to be. I don't want to over tighten and break it .
How can I set the gauge in the direction I want?
You would have to remove it and screw it in again from the tank itself. Or remove the lid and shift it, then reclamp the filter lid on.
@@SPL Thanks
Thank you for sharing.
Your very welcome! 👍
