      That's not surprising ; I'm a native French speaker who can speak English fluently, and I do think and dream in English a lot of the time. Sometimes when I speak with my family I have trouble with some words because I want to say something in French but I can only remember the English word for it. And I don't even live in an English-speaking country, so I guess for the Twice foreign line who have lived in Korea for years it'd be the case even more

    when j-line arrived in korea, members said that mina was the fastest to pick up the language since she trained the shortest among all of them (1 year). they also mentioned multiple times from debut until now that mina is the smartest and is the most quick-witted.
    however i think sana improved rapidly and surpassed mina overtime due to her outgoing, extroverted and outspoken nature. sana is like the most extroverted member and mina is the most introverted member.

      This is an interesting idea.
      Granted, as someone who doesn’t have a firm grasp on all of the things needed to critique it (I’m talking about me), this thought process makes a lot of sense when I think about it. Sana probably spends much more time out and conversing out loud with other people in Korean than Mina does due to her personality. I never really thought about it like that.

    For the Taiwanese, the "ng" sounds are often less audible and morphed into an in between "n" and "ng" sound, this is perhaps why tzuyu makes this mistake. Hearing korean with small hints of their native tongue is definitely unique and adds character. It's almost like hearing a french person speaking American english, quite interesting to listen to.
    Now here is some unsolicited critique I'd like to offer for your korean. In order to reach native levels, an American needs to talk with a different tone when speaking an Asian language. It's hard to describe, but Asian languages are spoken with a ton of indecision and a lot of pauses and gaps and run-ons. English speakers definitely tend to gravitate towards putting everything they try to say in one perfect sentence, but this is quite awkward sounding in something like everyday Chinese. Best way to describe this is to sound more "stuttery" with a lot of "eh", "hmm", "ah", "mmm" in between sentences. This may seem counterintuitive, but this is definitely one of the subtle reasons foreigners will sound foreign with Asian languages.

      I think Taiwanese mandarin speakers make the distinction between n and ng less obvious because in Taiwanese Hokkien the n or ng sounds can change depending on where it is in the sentence. For example lín (you) can be pronounced lín or líng depending on if it’s pronounced using the front or the back of your mouth. And I think this is what is influencing Taiwanese mandarin and thus her Korean (regardless if she speaks Hokkien or not). For example in 행동 the ㅇ is before a ㄷ which is pronounced on this alveolar ridge which is where ㄴ is pronounced and so using Taiwanese Hokkien traits it would probably be pronounced 핸동. And this trait makes Taiwanese mandarin the way it is eg míngzì can be pronounced mínzì because z is pronounced on your alveolar ridge like n is and not as the back of your mouth like ng is. But just my observations lol

    • @emojibaseball1251
      @emojibaseball1251 3 года назад +11

      Yeah I was about to say--this is a common situation with Mandarin speakers from Southern China in general just due to how the pronunciation of southern dialects has influenced the way many southerners speak Mandarin (e.g. mixing up "n" and "ng" sound).

    Loved this, and I totally understand Tzuyu's 겨드랑이 misinterpretation, for I thought for over a decade that "blood" in Japanese was "chiga" instead of just "chi." Just like in Korean, the subject marker is "ga" (血が出ている "chi ga deteiru" "(one) is bleeding", 피가 나온다) and in the case of blood, is almost always followed by it, hence "chiga." Additionally, just like in Korean, the markers are often omitted, so in the case of "chi ga deteiru," one may have thought that the ga was omitted, and the original sentence would have been "chiga ga deteiru." To even further complicate things, in the case of blood, a lot of times you're just shocked by the sight of it, so you can cut off the sentence midspeech and just exclaim, "Chiga!..." as in "Blood!..." leaving just the subject marker and truncate the rest of the sentence, reinforcing this weird belief of mine that I carried throughout childhood.
    Anyway, I find this series super fun, Billy. Thanks a lot for these! Maybe you could do other stars like Wendy from Red Velvet, Amber from f(x), or Sam Hammington next?

    Could you consider doing a video with Blackpinks Rosé, she's Korean but didn't learn Korean until she moved to Korea. I used to see comments in 2016 from kfans saying she was hard to understand and would even rewind clips to re-listen to what she was saying and they would also comment on videos when she was improving to congratulate her for still studying. As someone who is not a native Korean speaker, I can't hear her accent when speaking Korean so I would really love to see what you think of her pronunciation and how you think she's improved since debut. i can hear a pronunciation mistake in your japanese, you pronounce "ch" "t" "p" and "k" as "ㅊ" "ㅌ" "ㅍ" and "ㅋ" respectively but really theyre much closer to "ㅈ" "ㄷ" "ㅂ" and "ㄱ". ppl only think of these consonants as aspirated/strong consonants so they can still distinguish them from "j" "d" "b" and "g" which sound like how they do in english(except for "j" which sounds like how it does in russian or how dź sounds in polish and "d" in japanese is also slightly different and is the same as the one in french, spanish or most languages but "b" and "g" are exactly the same as english)

    I totally make the mistake of "잠시만요/기다려 주세요" and "ummmmmm" when I'm speaking in Korean, I didn't realize how awkward I must sound until I saw this. Similarly, as a non-native, I never would have clocked Mina's Japanese pronunciation of tomato or cream.
