    Why do the Celtics never get credit for actually starting the super team thing? They traded for a former MVP and the best shooter in the world at the time, adding to a perennial all-star, and immediately won the chip. That's a super team no?

      My guess is because they underachieved severely compared to Miami and KG + Ray were traded rather then being free agency moves.

    • @ineveryuniverse3953
      @ineveryuniverse3953 3 месяца назад +2

      Absolutely, it just makes sense for team action as well. You’d already have two of the league’s best, and sounds cliche but there’s only one ball. The superstars will at least be averaging 20+, of course taking a lot of shots and plays ran for and around them. The idea of having a third capable of or doing just about the same thing is overrated.
      Think about it, two of the teams mentioned in the vid are the Heat Big 3 and the Cavs Big 3. For both of those teams, the 3rd options in Bosh and Love essentially played as glorified role players capable of going off and picking things up if needed be. They only had to really play like superstars once again when the main options weren’t, either via injury or poor performance. At least that warrants it, but that third guy also takes up that cap and does ultimately mean less cap space and overall lesser quality in the role players off the bench.

  • @slackerofhell
    @slackerofhell 4 месяца назад +33

    Big 3's only work if you have solid roleplayers surrounding them and to cover their weaknesses. The Suns had no defence, and if one or two of their offensive powerhouses was playing like shit they had no chance. The rest of the team was just okay or G league material. There weren't any great role players on that team that could bail them out.

    The one thing i hate is when people say LeBron started super teams. Yes the heat was one and the cavs in 15, 16, and 17 were, too. But lets not act like super teams didn't exist before 2011. The Celtics literally had ray allen and Kevin Garnett join paul Pierce a few years before the heat. Shaq admitted that their 04 team was a superteam and yes they were old but those are all star caliber talent on one team. The tockets tried it in 97 with hakeem, drexler, and barkley and yes they were old but it still counts. The Celtics and Lakers from the 80's definitely count as both teams had 3 hall of famers. The early 70's lakers had a big 3 in wilt, west, and baylor along with Goodrich even though baylor retired before the playoffs. The 60's celtics had multiple hall of famers

      1. They were stars at the end of their prime or past it. By then, it was clear that their best years were past them.

    I don't know why the heat are always brought up as the ones who started this, when Boston succeeded with a big 3 superteam prior. The lakers with Malone and Payton too, you could even make an argument that the 06 heat team was a superteam considering the pedigree of all the players on that roster

    • @toofortoo242
      @toofortoo242  4 месяца назад +1

      I was thinking about this, and the reason I brought them up is because it was the first time players in their primes had teamed up through free agency moves. Danny Ainge trading for KG & Ray was a big moment, and that team can be considered a superteam, but they only had one championship to show for it & the term super team really got popularized when the Heat Big 3 formed

    • @Foreriverricky
      @Foreriverricky 4 месяца назад

      @@toofortoo242 fair enough, however, to rebuttal once again we can go back further. All of the MJ championships have to be considered super teams (especially the second threepeat). The 80s Lakers and Celtics also have to be held in that regard. Super teams aren’t nothing new. I think the thing that really makes them different in the era that we have witnessed is that it’s all based on personalities whether or not these teams will succeed. And we’re seeing how these personalities really are because not only are they on the big screen, but we also see them on the little screen on our phones. The players egos* have grown as much as their salaries in the past 15 years.

    another factor for the suns is that the stars that they did acquire don’t compliment each others play styles. A big reason these superteams do work is the way the stars play off of each other. Chris Bosh and Kevin Love were players who had to refine their games in order to make these teams succeed. For the nets a big reason they were so dominant when they did play was due to Harden becoming more of a playmaker who can still get you a bucket when needed.

    With the Celtics, KG was the defensive big man, Pierce was the long time Celtics team star, Ray Allen was the sharpshooter, and Rondo was the distributor.
    The problem with a lot of super teams now is that everyone thinks they are the star and no one wants to play off the ball or defense even. They all think they are MJ or Kobe but they can't play any defense and never want to defer to someone else. Everyone is too selfish pretty much.

    Yeah, salary cap makes it challenging. You gotta grow organic and know how to spot young talent and team build to do it right. The Connely front office guy for TWolves is playing chess. Anthony Edward's is making 11M while some of these old proven chokers are making 3 times that.

    No. "super teams" started in the 90's. Well, really it's always been, but free agency didn't start until Tom Chambers. After then, Barkley to the rockets, Glenn Rice joining Kobe & Shaq, ect, ect...

    In my opnion 2:20 superteam is a team that has to have the best or second best player at the time Like 16-19 Warriors 10-12 Heat or the 96-98 bulls and have high quality 2nd and 3rd options and to have quality role players 13-14 heat aint superteam cause d wade was not the same player anymore

    The Celtics started super teams (or maybe the Malone/Payton/Kobe/Shaq lakers but didnt win so people forget)
    I feel like Warriors shouldn't be too looped in as a super team. I know they got Iguodala and Durant, but the bulk of what made them what it was they built thru the draft.

    Super team was never a thing. Playing with couple of All stars was never an easy guaranteed ring or deep playoff run. It was ONLY prime King LeGOAT James who coasted through playoffs year in yrar out that made players believe joining other superstars would get them a ring
