I've been listening to it a lot these past few weeks. Never get bored of it. I first heard this in 1990. My cousin made my brother and I, a few mix tapes of DM. Singles 81 to 85, Violator, Black Celebration and MFTM.
"Ive got the goose bumps...!" (x2)...Damn it, and so have I!...But I've been listening to this for ages!! It's like shownig the kid I'll never have the greatest piece of ART and it turns out he loves it... Totally addicted to your channel.
You have now officially entered the greatest back to back to back album sequence by any band in history: Black Celebration Music For The Masses (do both the album reactions along with reactions from the 101 movie from this tour) Violator
Amazing song. I found your channel because of Depeche Mode and Duran Duran, great reactions!

The real DM gems begin with this album. I'm so jealous of you, Sephe, that you'll only be discovering all these gems now. DM's music is the only drug that has ever met me. However, its effects are all the stronger 😎👍
Imagine being in a relationship and you both had a horrible day and all yall want is to forget about it in each other...when I first heard it ...something in me shifted...like tectonic plates shifting lol all of this album is a GREAT masterpiece... actually the next three albums keep escalating culminating with Songs of Faith n and Devotion my favorite of all😍ty for your reaction...
Seph, remember: next album from Some great reward was "The singles, 81-85, in which there were released two new songs: "Shake the disease" and "It's called a heart", both are bone year before "Black celebration" . Don't miss them
Seph let me explain what means with "Black Celebration" "Black Day". On an interview Dave told that Black Celebration consists of simply celebrating at night after a complicate, stressful day, which that also explains Black Day. Celebrating after stress, after a stressful day.
You are going to love this album! No hit singles with the exception of But Not Tonight which is on the US release! But this album is full of atmosphere! You missed 2 other songs prior to this: Shake the Disease & It's Called a Heart!
Good reaction again. Fly on the windscreen is next. If you are doing live reactions to one's you have done before. The rock am ring version of stripped is awesome 👌
I go back and forth between Black Celebration and Music for the Masses as DM's GREATEST ALBUM EVER. YOu are now getting into the absolute apex of DM, and this single is a great one.
When one is suffering from severe depression, and I have been there myself, a day where absolutely nothing happens can be seen as a positive. Because at least you are still here. This track really hits hard with me on a personal level
This is a transformative album for Depeche Mode. They become more produced with their catchy industrial sound, and introspective songwriting. This will imprint their dark soundscape and uptempo songs.
Yes, what an opener! I can't listen to this song for the first time any more but I'm enjoying the anticipation of you hearing the rest of BC and the other masterpieces that come after it.
This album changed my life. Realized that I wasn't the only person who saw how ugly the world is (raised religious and sheltered). Understood finally that there wasn't something wrong with me. ETA: A Black Celebration is celebrating the fact that you survived another shitty black day in this messed up world.
The last album they did with Daniel Miller & Gareth Jones. Man, they did a epic trilogy. "Construction Time Again", "Some Great Reward", and that MASTERPIECE
I first heard this album in 1990. A mix tape from my cousin. 2 mix tapes. Singles 1981 to 1985 and Violator. Then Black Celebration and Music for the Masses. I listened to Black Celebration and Fly on the Windscreen continuously for days on end, before listening to the rest of Black Celebration album.
In my DM All-Time Top 5. The sound is so good I can't even explain it without sounding overly pretentious lol. It reminds me of an 80s martial arts action film or video game on a surface level...
There's very little sunshine in some people's lifes... Some are destroyed...and lost... Some are liberated...and freed... Then there are thoes who learn to luv the fire...and come to embrace the darkness... Even celebrate it..!!
Martin Gore said in the 1990-02-17 issue of NME: I don't mind you bringing up existentialism because I am influenced by that. I'm probably as influenced by Camus, Kafka and Brecht as I am by pop songs. Like on 'Black Celebration' where the positive element is the idea of celebrating the end of another grey day."
SEPH, I see Depeche Mode was the first music reaction when you debuted your Channel. That was about six months ago. At least you're stirring the pot to appeal to a wide variety of viewers.
The distorted voice in the beginning is Winston Churchill " brief moment of rejoicing " after winning the war, the song is about the bombings in London in the second world War, celebrating the they survived the bombings, that what I interpret
Simple answer just change black for bad, it works for almost every line except obviously the title. More in depth is it’s about depression, and him wanting to celebrate getting through another day. A lot of their songs can be filtered through your own personal feelings, and point of view, basically pick how it makes you feel and that’s it’s meaning to you.
I've always seen this 'Black Celebration' as a state of depression so deep that you reach rock bottom and the only thing left to avoid ending up like Ian Curtis is dwelve into that "sick sense of humour" and celebrate even what you don't have at all: a hug, a smile, a touch; id est, your nothingness. Should you have the chance, try asking for the song in some nocturnal wave club; dance to this dressed in black from head to toe (with your leather boots on if possible)...on your own but surrounded by annoying chatters; dancing to death even when one's life's miserable. Madrid is great and alienating enough for this errand ;)
@@SephPlays I'm not sure...But depending on certain moods it might be Some Great Reward, Black Celebration, Music for the Masses, Songs of Faith & Devotion (which was the first time I saw them live and ALMOST DIE with emotions...apart from the scorching heat in Barcelona and the massive audience in July 93)... But then there're other hymns like Told you so, The sun & the rainfall, Photographic...And later on Wrong, Broken, Useless, Sister of Night... I don't know how to answer to that question...They represent a lot to me...Even at their worst shape I can find something remakarble in their music without losing objectivity. Keep doing this great trip, my friend! 😎
it`a nihilist love song. that`s why it`s ”black”. in spite of the world type of thing. it might as well be on the OST of ”Natural Born Killers” or ”Thelma & Louise” or ”Bonnie & Clyde”. Nothing ”witchy” about it, as some have suggested over time. I LOVE this journey of yours, as a ”Depecher” (that is what the fandom in my country called themselves). And keep smiling! :)
This song is the absolutly epic anthem of the black dressed (goth likely) fans of the 80s. It's not just DM fans who say that. This track is not a single, but absolutely epic! Do not wonder about it: It's Depeche Mode
It doesn't really matter what "Black Celebration" meant to DM. What it meant to DM fans in the day was simple -- we all wore black, and "Black Celebration" was our celebration of being in the alternative crowd out of the mainstream. This was an anthem for us.
I agree, CTA is way better the SGR. I would say that DM was at their best from 86-93. Been listening to them since late 1983 and have about 200 DM records in my collection. :)
Yo Seph I'm new in your channel and Im enjoying your reactions to my favorite bands and one of them is Depeche Mode. So will be great to see your reaction to The Cure Pornography Album or Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division, Children on Stun, Eyes of the jungle nightmare etc. 🖤 Stay dark cheers from Argentina.

The album and especially the opener blew us away at the time. The song is still incredible and never gets boring.

Me too. Just watching the instrumental opening.
Now you're getting into some peak dark Depeche Mode era 👀
You have now officially entered the greatest back to back to back album sequence by any band in history:
Black Celebration
Music For The Masses (do both the album reactions along with reactions from the 101 movie from this tour)
Violator
Surely SOFAD is also one of these back to back greatest albums?
SOFAD is good but not at the same epic level as the previous 3 IMO, but whatever floats your boat :)

Seph let me explain what means with "Black Celebration" "Black Day".
On an interview Dave told that Black Celebration consists of simply celebrating at night after a complicate, stressful day, which that also explains Black Day. Celebrating after stress, after a stressful day.
Met them backstage in their early years. Quiet guys but Dave was the most talkative. Twas a dream come true!

Love this album. So happy we are this far along. :) The ending to that first song was the start of track 2. It blends together you'll see. Cheers!
I go back and forth between Black Celebration and Music for the Masses as DM's GREATEST ALBUM EVER. YOu are now getting into the absolute apex of DM, and this single is a great one.
It’s about a day where absolutely nothing happens. A dead day, a black day in a time of depression, hence the sarcastic line “I’ll drink to that “
When one is suffering from severe depression, and I have been there myself, a day where absolutely nothing happens can be seen as a positive. Because at least you are still here.
This track really hits hard with me on a personal level
This is a transformative album for Depeche Mode. They become more produced with their catchy industrial sound, and introspective songwriting. This will imprint their dark soundscape and uptempo songs.
This is my favourite album! I think this song is about being intimate with someone after a long, bad day. Hence, a black celebration. That’s my take!
This album is so great! I think you will enjoy the entire thing, at least I hope so...
One my favorite DM songs. Thank you for doing this video ❤🖤🤘🔥🔥
Masterpiece
to go to a concert from Depeche Mode is to have a black celebration, it´s not dark it´s lightfull and warm!!!
