Nice to see someone using hand tools with skill! Probably quicker than cordless certainly cheaper, without the hassel of charging or theft. Also no verbal bull crap! Well done 👍
Cheers pal! My tools have already been robbed! So haven’t got a choice. Also I don’t like carrying loads of stuff up and down the roofs 🤣 thanks for your comment ! 💪
I,v been a site chippy since I left school, done too many roofs , first ,second fixes, kitchens etc worked with a ton of young chippies. Thanks mate! The brick layer goes around after and fits cavity socks to block the top of all the cavity’s. Ready for the cavity fill insulation. Cheers
Been doing box end exactly like this from the day we started using upvc on site! 30 years ish 🙈Only thing I do different is carry on the 4x1 to the end of the soffit and use battery grinder for all cuts!! Much easier especially in cold weather! But textbook job that pal👏👏👏
Me too! Maybe about 15years though 😛🤣. Yeah I get what you’re saying with the 4x1 I stopped it short so the bricky can fly past with the cuts. Cheers pal! 👌
Another amazing video mate! You’re absolutely mustard 😉 just done my diminishing trusses like you do yours today after watching your video and they flew in 💸💪
beautiful Neat workmanship Ash .. what brand ? of fascia/ softia Do you think 🤔 is the Best Quality? and if you use the thinner fascia Do you build a (sub-fascia boarding )for strength & support .
Thanks for your comment! Not tooo sure on brands tbh every job I go to the site supply the materials and I’m guessing they probably go as cheap as possible haha but it’s all pretty similar! We used a sub fascia on this roof to push the fascia out more as there wasn’t much kick but don’t usually fit the sub! Some sites want it fitting all the time, I guess it gives a better fix for guttering etc etc, but need to have the spare 4x1 todo it! Haha
Thankyou! I’ve personally never had any issues with expansion and I’ve always done my box ends like that. But a lot of people said I will have issues so I’ve taken on a few pointers like nailing 1 side of the jointers etc to help everything move abit. Always learning!! Cheers for your comment
Great tutorial. Appreciated the extra time it takes to do the more indepth videos, but they are a lot more helpful. Gives a great insight for people entering the trade or re training. How do you calculate the facia upstand? Is it specified or is it just the correct depth for each property? I think i read somewhere it was a calculation of the depth of the roof covering plus a bit to allow the last tile to kick up a bit? Keep up the great work.
Thanks mate! The upstand on the fascia is sometimes hard to achieve all depends on high of brickwork and how far the tails stick out. We’ve added a 4x1 sub fascia here to allow it to hang over more to give it slightly more kick but I think it could have done with at least an inch. I’d say it always wants to be about 2/3” above the rafter so that’s a inch for the batten and like you say abit to kick the last tile up, if the roof is steeper it would probably want more kick still! Cheers for your comment 👌
Nice clip. Does the barge not end up being tiny when you nail the soffit direct to the ladder? How do you hide the joint between the box and the barge? Always interesting seeing how others do things 👌
No mate the barge is 150mm so hangs down past the soffit by quite abit. And it’s cut in to that corner then I put a pin in the bottom edge to keep it up tight, never had an issue with a gap appearing and been doing it that way for about 15 years haha 🤞. Cheers for your comment 👍👌
Expansion joints are in the long runs of fascia/ barge. Yeah a lot of people have mentioned that but I’ve never had any issues with it or been called back to sort any. Maybe I’ve just been lucky haha
I built a wooden frame for my box ends on my extension so that they were a lot more rigid and supported than what you've done here but my roof overhang is 800mm so I suppose needs more than the fascia to support itself. But looking at the roof construction on that newbuild you are on, the timber used is about similar dimensions as my roof battens.
Not too bad that. Better cutting the box end first , then the return, so the return butts against the box end, so it allows you to cover the barge board to box end straight joints with the long corner, as the barge board comes past the return piece and sits against the box end, by just notching out the lip on the barge to pass the return.
@@ashleydavenport3794yeah i bet you have! Bullnose fascia boxends can be a little more tricky but once you've sussed one out they're fairly straightforward.

Thanks!
Nice one for this ash, been asked to jump on facia & soffit Monday morning…haven’t done a box end in about 3 years so this is a life saver🫣

I noticed that the top of the cavity wall is exposed. Skill Builder recommends covering the top of the cavity.

Never seen it done with the back of the box end first but nice work still
Amazing vid, thanks 🙏🏼
thanks! glad you liked it !!
Before fitting your back corner i fit the barge first then the last corner so the corner covers the barge to boxing joint
Nice work pal
Ahh nice! Sounds like a good idea that! That method is hard wired into my head now though 🤣

If you set that box section back a bit on the right you can use the ripped down corner piece to fully cover where the barge board meets it.

Ive not seen a roof like that only the rafters sat on a taller inner plate and then the soffit attached to sprockets.
1st Class...👌
👌👍 much appreciated
Should the soffit be touching the brick work, or should there be a gap?
Yeah it touches the brickwork! So there is no gaps for wind, bugs etc

No just a normal saw, but it would be easier with a fine tooth saw, or grinder 👌

Not when doing fascia and soffit pal
good job

Where is the expansion joint? Also if you pin both sides of the cover strip you also dont leave any room for movement. This stuff moves in the heat

@@NAFO_Badger_Brigade yep! And if it’s not trapped in tight it rattles in the wind for 25 years haha
good job...i find an older saw where the razor sharpness is gone is better for corner joints as less aggressive.
Good point! We always try to use the old saws on plastic anyway coz it ruins them quickly haha
