I remember reading a historical fiction book about an archer in (I think) England around the era where the longbow came into prominent use during war. In the book the author indicates that the strength and endurance required to wield one effectively, and consistently through an entire battle was monstrous. It’s pretty impressive. With armor and chainmail becoming heavier to withstand piercing wounds from spears, arrows and bolts, the solution to win a fight against an armored or shielded soldier, was to tire him by continuously bonking with weapons like maces and longswords, or to use long weapons and abuse the range of those (like spears, longswords, chained maces) by swinging them and maintaining distance between you and the opponent until, well until something happens. Still it's not much a matter of weight/muscle as it is a matter of muscle memory and manuality. Once you can switch in between techniques and direction in which you are swinging, acquiring practicality with your wrists, the weight of the weapon isn't even going to affect you, at least not as much as the weight of at east 20 kg of armor (AT LEAST).

Though that's likely in part because Odysseus's bow was (most likely) a recurve bow, which can be very hard to string if you don't have a modern stringer and don't know the proper techniques. Notably, a lot of the historical techniques involve sitting down, and Odysseus is noted in the poem to be sitting when he strings it. While Odysseus is certainly not physically weak, he was more notable for being Greek mythology's resident guile hero, so it would be very in-theme if the test was less about raw strength and more about knowing a technique the others didn't.

In games, Dexterity is usually tied to Bow ability. I like to think about Dexterity as just another form of strength. Like gymnasts and acrobatics, in D&D that technically dexterity, but you have to be very stubborn to rule that acrobatics don't take strength.

    • @omargoodman2999

I'm most familiar with Pathfinder 1e, so I'm not quite sure how the various other editions of D&D handle it (PF1e draws most directly from D&D 3.5). But in PF1e, bows were either standard or compound. They all used Dex for Atk (accuracy) rolls, but only compound bows added Str to damage; standard bows had no stat-based damage bonus. But compound bows *also* had a Strength Rating (representing draw weight) and, if your Str bonus was less than the Str rating, you suffered -2 Atk penalty; presumably because you struggled to draw the bow and it shook under the strain.
By contrast, most Melee weapons used Str for both Atk (accuracy) _and_ Damage, on the basis that you need to be able to lift a heavy weapon without struggle and the stronger you were, the more easily and accurately you could strike with it. It took special feats or abilities such as Weapon Finesse to use Dex in place of Str for weapon accuracy, and only for certain kinds of weapons that were already well balanced and efficient to manipulate. Though, I had always had a bit of a qualm that the Str Rating mechanic wasn't extended in such a manner that *any* weapon you had sufficient Str to manipulate easily could be used in a more Dexterous way rather than brute force.

      My bard is Charisma based

    • @omargoodman2999

@@icarusbinns3156 Brings to mind some rules elements in PF that do things like _Guided:_ use Wisdom in place of Str (or Dex) for Atk rolls. Don't aim steadier, aim such that steadiness doesn't matter.
But one of my favorites is Nature's Whispers Oradin. Oracle 1 w/ Nature mystery gives you Nature's Whispers which let's you use Cha in place of Dex for AC and CMD. And Paladin 2 gives you +Cha to all three saves. That means, so long as you don't flat-out dump Dex, Wis, or Con, all you really need to do is pump Cha for AC and Saves. That sets the foundation, but then it gets even better with some Bard thrown in. Bards can get Masterpiece Performances in place of a feat or lvl 2 spell. And one of these in particular, Pageant of the Peacock, gives a bonus to Bluff, as well as let's you make a Bluff check in place of *any* Int-based stat check or skill check. So any Knowledge check? It's now a Bluff check. Crafting? Bluff. Spellcraft? Oh, you better know that's Bluff. You literally make up a BS story... and the Universe believes you and makes it true. You're Cid Kagenou.

Pathfinder Second Edition straight up uses half your strength modifier for bow damage.
Bows in Shadowrun are also straight up strength.
In both D&D and Pathfinder, there's a reason Athletics is a thing. People keep trying to do stuff like "Can I use acrobatics here, this is something an acrobat would do?", and the answer is always "No, you use athletics, god dammit!". Acrobatics is specifically for things related to balance. Running, jumping, climbing and swimming fall squarely into Athletics.

As someone small and skinny who also practices archery I'd like to point out (in regards to the "bow doesn't need much strength" statement) that I very often tend to underestimate the needed strength for archery. I was often asked to introduce friends to archery and let me tell you: the amount of people that already struggled with drawing the bow fully will surprise me every time.
So don't underestimate your strengths guys.
