  • Jerry French has a great solution to rigging a trailing hook on shank flies. This system is great to use with Intruders, Ultra Squids, Sculpin patterns and other shank style flies. The Ultra Rig System gives the tier the ability to place the hook behind the fly at any length they desire. The angler also has the option of changing the hook if a different size is preferred or the hook becomes damaged.
Ask your local Aqua Flies dealer about the Ultra Rig Kit.
The kits are available in six sizes:
    Round Eye Kits-26mm, 33mm, 51mm
    Return Eye Kits-27mm, 43mm, 51mm

Ive tied so many flies with waddington shanks and braided line. I sure got a lot of foul cast. I had to add a piece of 30# mono tag when tying in the braid, when putting the hook on you feed that mono tag through the eye and that keeps it pretty straight as well. This method is way better though, and I will be trying this out.
    Nice work Jerry!

Wow I'm so glad I found this and THANK YOU. I have the worst luck with wire. The hooks look great, too.

We will be putting out two more videos showing the use of the Ultra Rig with an Intruder and an Ultra Squid. Keep an eye out.

Great stuff, Jerry. Was thinking about something along these lines, but not as developed and well-thought as what you've done.

How do u change the hooks though? Do you run the tube up over the fly body or off the back of the fly?

I love this set up! and that purple is amazing! Do you have a video on that tie?

Hi Blake. The purple fly you see in the video is Jerry's Ultra Mini-Intruder. The video for tying that fly will be out in January.

Nice what about replacing hook do you have to slide tubing all the way off hook?

    • @Raevenswood

Yep slide it off the braid and up the shank of the hook then replace the tubing onto the new hook and loop the braid through the new hook then slide the tubing down the braid.

Would this rig work for dolly lama flys? Attaching tail to rear hook? I’ve just started tying, fly shop recommended this rig for my flys. Just been thinking it over how i would attach it all. Looks like a good setup. Good videos Thxs.

Hello Jona. Personally I do not think an Ultra Rig is necessary on a Dolly Lama. Between the rabbit strip tied to the back hook and the stiffer braid, you should not have a problem with the hook fouling. If you do want to give it a shot, these are the the steps I would take. Take a piece of Ultra Tubing, start sliding it over the eye, slide it around the bend all the the way to the barb. Use some windex or saliva to help it slide over the hook eye. Tie the front portion of the fly, leaving a loop of braid out of the back. At this point you can hitch the hook onto the loop of braid that is tied on the fly. Then slide the tubing forward over the eye, cover the braid and attach to the shank. The Ultra Tubing should be covering just the eye of the hook, leaving the shank clean for you to tie the rabbit down.
      Cheers
      Doug
