Hey everyone! Metal singer and vocal coach, Mary Z back once again to give you my reaction to and analysis of singer Floor Jansen (who you know from Nightwish and After Forever). In today's reaction video, I take a genuine FIRST LOOK at her performance of "Winner" on the Dutch show "Beste Zangers". What IS it that makes Floor such a compelling vocalist? What styles is she using? What can we learn from her? Answers to all of that and more in today's video... I don't think I've ever used the word "Verklempt" so much in a video!

The song was written for Tims disabled brother. He and Floor have known eachother for years or at least about eachother due to the touring circuit in the Netherlands.
I think only two of the contestants (Tim and Henk) knew who Floor even was before the show and I think they had no idea what to expect from a metal singer since it's not overly popular there. She has also sung in German, Spanish and Dutch while on show, I've been extremely impressed!

Also Floor is schooled in Theatre Music, conservatorium and Rock Academy, Henk is an Conservatorium Opera singer, and schooled in Theatre Music so the 'click' is beyond magic. 1+1=3, the triangle of creation. Henk will perform live with Nightwish in november 2020 in @msterdam. Floor admired Henk when she studied conservatorium but she wasn't sattisfied with the range she could reach, Opera or Rock. So an teacher came up to her and advised her to do Theatre Music School, and that's why she can do the gricks with her voice and vibrato. It's really beyond, and when you consider that the majority of the Netherlands didn't know/ never heard before of Floor Jansen, only the dutch metal scene. This whole show was Epic, also for us in the Netherlands, we were stunned to and now they know who Floor is and what she is able to. First Glennis Grace and now another dutch singer. 🤗🇳🇱

The format has changed over the years. The participants are Dutch singers of different ages and backgrounds. They spend time together in a resort where they always seem to connect on a very human level. In every episode one of the participants is the star of the show and presenter Jan Smit - himself a very popular and respected singer - interviews them about their music, their inspiration and their personal lives. Generally the other singers pick a song by the artist or a song that has personal meaning for that artist (it's usually about 50/50) and perform them. The singers often change the song to fit their own style, or challenge themselves to do something unusual, thus taking everyone by surprise. Although it started as a contest, it no longer is. It's really about musicians sharing their love of and passion for music. Tim Akkerman (formerly of Di-Rect) wrote this song as a tribute to his wheelchair-bound brother. Floor felt a connection to that song because her mother suffers from rheumatism. She wanted to show her respect for Tim for always sticking with his brother. She also made it clear beforehand that she thought this was a great song and you can see how she enjoys performing the song. Finally, the band has improved enormously over the years: their support is crucial to the whole experience. There you have it :-)

Mary, Denise Hofs has done translations of the full season into English subtitles. The background and conversations the singers have add a ton the show! They aren't so much "judging" the other singers performances, as at the end of the episode they say who impacted/had the most effect on them. For this one, it was Floor, because Tim had previously been saying he couldn't ever seem to cry, and Floor's response via this song was basically: "Oh no? Hold my wine and watch." :)

It's not just the songs that the different performers have recorded it's songs that have meaning to the recipient. For example in this last season songs included some opera, Phantom of the opera , Hotel California, I can't help falling in love with you.
What I like about this show is the connection between the singers and the recipient and the explanation of why this song is important and why it was chosen. Winner was written for Tim's brother who is a wheelchair. Another nice part of this is that the songs are also often changed to reflect the singers genre, so there is a heavier rock tone to it here. Some of the songs were translated from the original Dutch into English. And that personal touch and effort makes it that much more special for the recipient.

Floor also attended the Dutch opera school in her teens(for a year or two maybe, not sure)which is why she can sing in the operatic mode. She obviously worked very hard to learn the correct ways, not least of which to sing, but also to save her voice. Search Floor's 'O Mio Babbino Caro' for her opera vocal. That's the only opera aria I have found her singing the operatic mode from the beginning to the end.
To show how popular the Bests Zangers show was, a week or so after it ended, Floor advertised a personal nine show run--around Holland I think--and all nine shows were sold out within 24 hours.
I have to say, Mary Z, that you are in the top five vocal coaches I have heard on youtube. Your analysis of how she does what she does is outstanding and right on point. And I love your personal reactions to her singing. We her fans feel the same way. And there are many of her fans(myself included)who say she is the greatest singer on the planet. But rabid fans(which we all are)can overreach in their emotional reactions to Floor. However, I will say that she is without doubt THE best Symphonic Metal singer working today.
The Nightwish Army, of which I am one, hope you will, through time, react to ALL of the songs Nightwish performed at the 2013 Wacken Open Air Festival, of which there was an estimated 82,000 people in attendance. Oh one last detail; isn't it amazing how Floor can control 82000 people with just her voice her mic and her arms??

More information about the singers in (allready the 12th season of) this show:
-Samatha Steenwijk: Sings Dutch folklore since 2009 and runner up in the Voice of Holland 2018, which made her more famous in the Netherlands. Like Floor she has a very strong and powerfull voice.
    - Ruben Annink. Won the Dutch TV show Singer/Songwriter and in the spring of his career. Writes his own songs.
    - Rolf Sanchez : Latin/Salsa/Reggaeton singer with 3 no 1 hits in the American Billboard Tropical Songs Chart, including the song Que Se Siente that Floor sang for him in the previous episode. He works with Guianko Gómez, producer of Marc Anthony. Like Floor better known outside than inside The Netherlands, especially in Latin America.
    - Henk Poort :. Very well known Opera/Operette/Musical singer in the Netherlands for whom Floor sang the Vilja song. Sang the dutch version of The Phantom of the Opera (spoiler: He and Floor will sing that duet in the last episode)
    - Tim Akkerman Former : member of the Dutch rockband Di-Rect (1999-2009) and now having a career of his own. His latest album contains American Rock influenced by Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam and Ryan Adams.
    - Emma Heesters: Has her own YouTybe Cover channel with more than 1 million followers. Working on her first album in the USA at Universal Republic Records with multi-platinum and Grammy Award winning record producers and writers
-And of course Floor jansen The front woman of NightWish. Note: Floor is considering singing Spanish for the Nightwish fans in Latin America and Rolf Sanchez has pledged his cooperation to help her with the Spanish pronunciation.

Y-e-s-s-s--one of my favorite coaches reviewing Floor, "Winner"; couldn't click fast enough! I've watched all 8 episodes, translated by the oh-so-generous (with her editing time--massive undertaking!) Denise Hof, and agree 100%, Mary--I would love to see this concept picked up by one of the USA networks, too. No competition--just singers getting to know each other and their well known songs, then challenging themselves by singing those songs back to each other, in their own styles. It's just sheer musical joy; let's hope some network producer has seen this series and is already pitching it. Loved your "verklemtpness", Mary--it just endears you to us and makes us want to reach through the screen, and give you a hug and a "Me, too, sweetheart." No need to shy away from getting punched in the heart, while sharing these moments with us, before you dissect it, in your expert manner. Loved it!

Floor is one of the best belters in the business. Another singer that has a massive, powerful voice is Fuki from Japan. She can cover many styles and has probably a 2 octave range or better, and most of her singing is from the chest with an addictive vibrato. Do yourself the pleasure of checking out the song Hyperion from her old band Lightbringer. I haven't seen an actual voice coach watch/react to her, and is long overdue. I would so appreciate a reaction of this. I've heard the song over a hundred times and there is a moment or two that still melts my heart.

The episodes are on youtube, really well translated by another youtuber i can't think of right now. But, watching an entire episode is really impactful. You get to hear the stories behind the songs and learn a lot about each of the performers as well. I highly recommend checking one out. Not as a reaction video, of course, but just on your own. I've seen them all now and they're all really good

As a few others have mentioned, you should start watching the awesome Denise Hofs English versions now that the show has concluded. Many of us came for Floor, but were quite impressed with the others, AND the vibe...just awesome to watch. As for this one in particular, you'd *really* have gotten verklempt (and I love you for using that one lol) if you knew the backstory. He wrote the song for his older brother, who has been wheel chair bound his whole life. All in all, I would recommend watching the whole series. Each and every singer brought something to the table, and the chemistry/friendships/mutual respect that developed was pretty inspiring.

To get a real feel for the show and its participants you should check the full episodes. Go to Denise Hofs' YT page where you find most of them; some can be found on Dailymotion because of copyright claims. Denise did an outstanding job of subtitling every episode in English. You'll discover that every single singer is worthy to have a place in this show.
Tip: The Phantom of the Opera, performed by Floor and Henk Poort is a 'must review'; you'll be blasted away! If you do that video don't forget to insert enough pauses because plenty of reactors had their contribution removed because of copyright claims. Final remark: the singer in the spotlight just points out which song touched her/him most, so 'judge' is a bit much. Further there is no competition at all.

I've followed this show for years (helps being dutch in this case ;) ) and each season was good sofar, but.. this season was way up there, and not only because of Floor, the whole group of singers gave us pure music magic.
I like how you point things out, that many others neglect to mention, it adds to the whole reaction.
Floor finally gained the fame in the Netherlands, she so deserved, everyone in the rock and metal scene know who she was, but mainstream? hardly anyone ever heard of her, and that while she is one of the best vocalists around, something we usually take great pride in, in this little country. (But now they do, oh boy has she unleashed a storm here lol)
And that is something this show also does, get viewers to learn about singers they dont know, or have sort of forgotten about from way back when, and fall in love with them (again).
It kick-started several careers and rekindled the careers of older musicians several times, its truly a great show.
I too do think this show, in EXACT the same format, would be a huge success in the USA, just make sure to have great singers for the first 2 or 3 season, who dont have that diva issue going on, so they can create the show, as its intended to be, no rivalry, just the love for music.
I've already imagined the first season and came to the conclusion that you cannot go wrong with Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg, Haley Reinhart, Alice Cooper, Cindy Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Megan Marie Hart as the singers, and John Legend as host, that it would be a perfect season one, that will draw in viewers and other singers to ensure a run of seasons for this show.
Ah well, one can dream, yet, it would be smart business because not only could they have a hit show on their hands, they could sell the episodes internationally too.
But most important of all, it would "teach" people what real music and musicianship actually was all about, and rekindle the love for other genres again. (that is what it does here too)
ty for your reaction, and yes, i suck at writing short posts lol

    • @goodsong6732
      @goodsong6732 4 года назад

IMO this would not works in the USA because it took years to build this to a succes. There is not the time and the money to take care for this.

    • @j0hnn13K
      @j0hnn13K 4 года назад

Like with anything in the USA, go big or go home, so they need to get the right names in, and do smart marketing, then i think it should take of, but indeed, taking in account that it will need at least 3 seasons to settle in. That part might be tough on executives, who want quick results, and therefor deliver crap tv shows.

Yes, we need shows like this in the U.S. There is no competition going on here, just a lot of camaraderie. At the end of the show, the host asks the that night's guest of honor which performance meant the most to them, or something like that. The vocalists seem to handle it like a minor annoyance.
