The first 10 years of our marriage, we moved 5 times, and with every move, I decluttered, I felt it was manageable. Now we have lived in our house for 8 years, and this spring I realised just how much stuff we have accumulated. I didn’t have a move to push me to look critically at our stuff. It is so stressful, and I want it to stop! Over the last weeks I have decluttered, finding inspiration from Erica and Dawn. Amazing ladies! I feel lighter, and am compelled to keep it up from now on.
I love how honest and real both of you are! I love the unusual and practical tips that Dawn gives, and I love the “blood, sweat and tears” that Erica displays to encourage us to do the hard stuff too! I appreciate both of you!
My hubby and I have moved 6 times in our 32 years of marriage. This last move, I gave so much away that I became a minimalist without knowing it. Lol. I have since realized that I want to live with less and continue to purge. So thank you Erica for the continued motivation.
I think the best things I've learned from renting and moving a lot is getting a big skip bin or 2 up to 3-1 months before and doing a couple of RUTHLESS purges! Including items I would sell and donate, because they're going to go through it and sort it at the other end anyway. Moving and setting up the beds first, at the end of the day you're going to want to just die! And yes, budgeting for takeaways, the thought of having to cook is going to make you want to cry! A few weeks beforehand, pack everyone a weekender bag with one device, 1 pair of shoes, 3 full outfits, a pair of pyjamas and hair and toothbrushes. Leave out one TV, the couch, matresses and necessary bedding, toiletries, one cup each, and pack EVERYTHING else! You're not going to need any dishes or cooking equipment up to a week before moving. It gives you all that space and time to clean up, so you might not need a cleaner, but hey, ALL help is always going to be. If you and a couple of hired people, or even a good friend or two, can get the cleaning knocked out in a day, that's going to cut out a lot of stress! I hate moving, but sometimes it's a necessary evil, and it is vital to have a plan, routines, and lessen the load as much as possible. Also, do not let your kids pack their own stuff by themselves lol! You will have to go through it again, so you might as well do it with them. I got my 15yr old's 13 boxes down to 7 after I took out ALL. THE. RUBBISH!! I couldn't believe it! Hahaha!! Oh the joys! 😂🤣😍 she's 16 now, bless her, and we have even more regular purges in her bedroom lol. Not long before moving last year my 19yr old moved out... you would die if you saw what was under his bed! Oml... ALL THE THINGS that had gone "missing"! Lololol bless his heart! He's 20 now, and I miss him ❤

Yep....that was awesome! We moved across town three years ago and as I’ve been decluttering the number of “crap time capsules” that I paid people to move is awful. Not to mention the amount of money I spent storing them in a storage unit. Better to purge now.
I purged everything a couple of years ago, i was tired having too much to move with as i moved often plus the huge amount on storage fees and also the money spent on moving, too much stuff i could have saved so much if i had purged much sooner!!
First-time viewer - love your channel! We moved to our current house the day my son was born (actually my parents moved us as I was in the hospital). I remember being offered a new washer and dryer for the new house and I just broke down. I needed something I was familiar with even though I was excited about all the changes. I was like, “I know how to use my old machine and I know I’ll be doing a lot of laundry, so just let me keep my machines!!!”
We have boxes in our garage that we brought with us 15 years ago on a move. They still have not been opened. Dealing with stuff on the leaving end is extremely good advice.

Love you both❤️ My husband was a real estate broker before he retired, and when we decided to move South, we put our house up on market, we took away all personal photos etc, plus our house was simplified, and minimal that we sold the house on the second day.... People can envision themselves living in the house if you de personalize it.
We moved several times and I always wrote on the carton kitchen, bathroom, master, dining room, kids bedroom etc. that way I could tell the movers to put the cartons in the room it belongs. That’s a huge help on the other end. When the move was local, we used a storage unit close to the new house and moved smaller items that we could move into the new house after moving day. That kept the moving costs down a little because they were just moving furniture and, cartons and other larger items. We took the clothes from the closets and moved them ourselves. It really helps to be organized and to know it always takes longer to pack and be ready for the mover than you think. I always wanted to leave time to do a good clean as well. Lots of work, but very exciting!

A great way to minimalist even if you’re not moving would be to ask yourself if you’d take it if moving. Brings in a new mindset an I think makes it easier to part with more! I’m a grandmother so there’s a lot of things here. I’m a crafter too so...
This is one of the things I don’t like about the RUclips algorithm. I love Dawn’s channel, but I can’t watch it because anytime I do, all of the minimal and productive and studying content I watch to help me through my current phase of life gets replaced by mom content which has nothing to do with me. If the algorithm changes, I’ll watch it again. Until then, I’m loving this collaboration between RUclipsrs I genuinely enjoy.

Art work (yes I still have their art work) vacation pictures and just pictures of them growing up. I just can't bear to throw them away.
Great collaboration! Wish these channels were available when I was a young Navy wife. Our Navy movers once packed a whole box and the only thing in it was a mass of bubble wrap and one plastic aspirin bottle🙄😂 when we unpacked on the other side.

Erica, I homeschooled for 12 years, and sized down by more than half 7 years ago when we moved. I can relate to everything you are going through. Sometimes I wish I could come help you, because I remember the stress. Everything Dawn said today was so true. When we moved and sized down dramatically I had just gone through 5 surgeries in 18 months. The last one was only a few weeks before we moved. So, we didn’t declutter ANYTHING. It’s taken me 7 years to get through everything, and I’m still working on becoming minimal. I still have my attic to conquer. There are boxes in there that we call mish /mash boxes-things we threw together in boxes on moving day-with both important things and useless things together. I can’t wait to tackle those. (Sarcasm). After the attic, I will have gone through everything and decluttered more than 50% of our belongings. I plan to keep going until we only have what we need, love, and use. Thank you for all the motivation. I’m praying for your move and for your family.

Thanks for the tips - we are preparing to move to Montana from the UK. I have been decluttering with help from you too and The Secret Slob for about a year now. I love the idea that it will be easier to replace than to transport - that is definitely true for us. Really it is just sentimental stuff that can't be replaced. I am trying to hone that down to a manageable amount. For example, when we packed up Christmas I labelled 1 small box with special ornaments to take when we move, got rid of all the tacky stuff and kept a tree and baubles in case we have one more Christmas here. I'm excited to have a fresh start with only things we love or need.

Great video! I liked that you guys got right to the point. Further to what Dawn was saying about moving from Minnesota (?) to Arizona - it’s a lot easier to find things that suit Arizona life in Arizona and a lot easier to sell cold northern gear up there. It can be really hard to imagine what a new place will be like, but a lot of things just don’t suit life in a new place. I’m sure this move will be easier in many ways Erica, but challenging in other ways. But you’ll get through it and learn a lot, and we all appreciate you sharing your experiences.
So exciting to see this collab! Dawn has been my #1 resource and guide during our minimizing journey. Everything she said about moving is spot on! We moved in May 2018 to a home we knew was temporary and again in September of 2019; I started my journey about halfway through living in the “temporary” place, and it was so much easier to declutter there/then. It was so much easier moving the second time too! We reluctantly purged for the first move, and happily threw out so much more for the second move once our mindset had changed. I moved an elliptical that I never used the entire time between moves. 😳🤦🏻♀️ It did not make the second move, and I’m so happy it’s gone!

My husband and I are experienced at remodeling so our houses sell quickly. Our last house sold the first day on the market and we hadn't found another yet so it was a nightmare. Next move...we will find a house first, decide what we want to take for it and get rid of the rest before our house goes on the market. Erica your plan to move first is spot on.
We are gearing up to sell our house and buy a new one. Sadly we aren’t going to have the help and support from family we were counting on because of this bleeping pandemic. Prepping a house to sell while quarantined with a toddler is extremely challenging.

Thanks for the tips - we are preparing to move to Montana from the UK. I have been decluttering with help from you too and The Secret Slob for about a year now. I love the idea that it will be easier to replace than to transport - that is definitely true for us. Really it is just sentimental stuff that can't be replaced. I am trying to hone that down to a manageable amount. For example, when we packed up Christmas I labelled 1 small box with special ornaments to take when we move, got rid of all the tacky stuff and kept a tree and baubles in case we have one more Christmas here. I'm excited to have a fresh start with only things we love or need.

Great video! I liked that you guys got right to the point. Further to what Dawn was saying about moving from Minnesota (?) to Arizona - it’s a lot easier to find things that suit Arizona life in Arizona and a lot easier to sell cold northern gear up there. It can be really hard to imagine what a new place will be like, but a lot of things just don’t suit life in a new place. I’m sure this move will be easier in many ways Erica, but challenging in other ways. But you’ll get through it and learn a lot, and we all appreciate you sharing your experiences.

So exciting to see this collab! Dawn has been my #1 resource and guide during our minimizing journey. Everything she said about moving is spot on! We moved in May 2018 to a home we knew was temporary and again in September of 2019; I started my journey about halfway through living in the “temporary” place, and it was so much easier to declutter there/then. It was so much easier moving the second time too! We reluctantly purged for the first move, and happily threw out so much more for the second move once our mindset had changed. I moved an elliptical that I never used the entire time between moves. 😳🤦🏻♀️ It did not make the second move, and I’m so happy it’s gone!

I had to do a big purge when all we could pack was an 8x8x16 pod. Even after the move I have tons of bins/boxes that havent been unpacked in 3yrs.

My husband and I are experienced at remodeling so our houses sell quickly. Our last house sold the first day on the market and we hadn't found another yet so it was a nightmare. Next move...we will find a house first, decide what we want to take for it and get rid of the rest before our house goes on the market. Erica your plan to move first is spot on.

We are gearing up to sell our house and buy a new one. Sadly we aren’t going to have the help and support from family we were counting on because of this bleeping pandemic. Prepping a house to sell while quarantined with a toddler is extremely challenging.

It was so great to hear from both of you today especially as we are getting ready to try and sell our home and move. I’ve definitely been guilty of the “I’ll throw it in a box and deal with it in the next place,” but I’m trying to be more international and minimal and think “what do I actually want to have to pack, or take to the new house- it has to work with our life now and our goals for the future.”
