As I was putting out my spring decor I realized how much I didn't want out. I'm letting a lot of it go and keeping the pieces I really want on display. I was also finally able to let go of a jacket that belonged to my mom who died 14 years ago. Something clicked and I am ready. You have been such a big inspiration. I will never be a minimalist but I am lowering my inventory.

So true! What are the things that has helped me most with decorating is to remember to decorate for the seasons and not the holidays. If I decorate for spring, I don’t have to put away the Easter stuff when April passes. If I decorate for fall, I don’t have to put away Halloween stuff and buy the extra Halloween stuff. 🎉🎉🎉

I just got back from an Easter vacation in Italy and I noticed how much I had decluttered in the past months. When entering, I felt like a hotel guest in my own house. Same. I've had some heath challenges recently and I've been thinking about how much more stressed I would have been to be "out of action" if I'd felt the house would be going south without me constantly on it. We got a cleaning company in a few weeks back to give the whole house a once over and they said it was so lovely to come into a home where they could truly clean rather than having to tidy up loads of crap before they could get to the surfaces.🎉

The beauty of the intentional decluttering process is coming across things that used to matter but don’t anymore. It brings into focus what I really and truly enjoy looking at, using and maintaining. I was looking at stuff that didn’t matter. I was digging through drawers and closets of stuff that didn’t matter. I am still in the process of downsizing but I now realize what I need, what I enjoy and what no longer serves me physically and emotionally. It is so true that I really don’t need all this stuff!! Thank you Dawn for your kind and gentle prodding to lessen the inventory to broaden our lives. ❣️💗❣️

Great points. The one that resonates most with me is all the wasted hours searching through, moving, and sorting to donate all the STUFF that has been consuming my life for the last few years. As I've gotten older, my values are more clear. I don't need the stuff, and I do need more free time for fun and adventures. I want to travel, garden, paint, and play rather than loading and delivering the 797th load of donations. Can't wait until the job is finished! Step by step I'm getting there.

🇨🇦 😊 hi Dawn from your neighbour to the north in Ontario, Canada. I don't comment often but have watched you from the beginning pretty much. .. 5 years anyway. I also follow Tom's channel.
I just have to applauded the both of you and the special talents, skills & knowledge you are passing on to your kids as well. I love your vision, passion and enthusiasm for life! You are a great motivational speaker and would make an excellent life coach as well.
I've watched many of your vlogs twice just to keep my own motivation going. I've been chipping away at the process for over 5 years. I say chipping away because I'm maybe 1/4 of the way to the freedom from "stuff" that I want to be.
I went from a fully furnished 3000 SQ foot house for 25 years to one less than half that size for the last 20 years. I have tossed and donated an ENORMOUS amount of stuff, which sometimes barely seems to make a dent, because you can hide a LOT behind closed closet doors!! 😅
This last weekend though, I went through one of my 4 double clothes closets (yup I have 4!!).. this was the 3rd pass through it in as many years. This time I could hear your voice urging me on..
I tried things on (I'm retired now... Don't need all those clothes... My size has changed also) so yes... Your voice:
---If it's not a "hell ya!" It's a hard no & out it goes!
---Do you want to keep a mental tally of all this inventory? NO... then let it go!
---How does this outfit make you feel? Is it saying negative things to you? If so.. out it goes. You can't bully me anymore!
---are you keeping it to fit some future version of yourself? (Up pops "Justin Case") 😂 Let it go!
---and the things I truly still love or paid good money for, that don't fit my "season of life" (retired/casual)... Some woman will strike gold on a new outfit at the thrift shop... Let her love it & enjoy it!
This was longer than I intended, but suffice it to say.. my living room, kitchen and bathroom is fully decluttered and always visitor ready and very calming. Each bag & box feels like a load of bricks off my shoulders! THANK YOU DAWN & keep motivating us! 👍😃❤️

I can relate to the extreme and horrible embarrassment of the house being a mess as a new SAHM. I didn't discover minimalism until your channel in 2017. By then, the kids were grown , with the youngest being 17. Sometimes I look at my life now because our house is like yours and so peaceful … sometimes I look at my life now and think, "would I have been less stressed when the kids were younger if the house had been like it is now? It was my life's dream and only desire to become a parent and be a stay-at-home mom and I feel like I had tons of fun regardless but there was always that nagging feeling regarding the embarrassment of the house and so much clutter all around as we played, made tents, baked cookies, & played board games. Do you think if you could go back when the kids were babies having a house EXACTLY as your house is now you would not be stressed because of the minimal aspect that you've now created around you?" I'm just curious bc you seem SOO happy as a SAHM these days, taking care to involve your kids in just about all that you do😊❤
And random, just the other night I had this horrible dream where we lived in the house we used to when our life had so much clutter in every space and it was literally a nightmare lol In the dream I was panicking trying to clean up clutter and every drawer and cabinet was full and every flat surface and even things were piled on the floor. I woke up and thought, "Wait, my house doesn't like that anymore because Dawn showed me minimalism!!!" Now, it's a peaceful place and always 15 minutes from tidy🎉❤😊
Congrats on finding one hobby and sticking to that, purposing to do it well❤❤ And I can totally relate to it was just 80 and now it's 45゚ concept because we're in Southwest Missouri and dealing with that as well.

I'll spare you the long story but I was recently feeling in a similar situation you were when you started your journey into minimalism. Tired, down on myself for not being able to keep up, feeling like i should be happy why am i not, dealing with an unhappy spouse from all the clutter... the list goes on. I felt defeated like this is just how it is being a mom of two young children and I have to get used to it cuz its not forever. But I want to say THANK YOU for coming into my life and helping me to completely turn things around. I wanted to be clean organized and all the things but I saved/tried to make use of Everything and my house was way too full. I have been decluttering for almost a year now but it wasn't until I started binge watching 😂 your videos a couple months ago that I was able to really make much headway because I had to completely change my mindset about my things, their real worth, the amount of time I was spending taking care of all this stuff and so much more! I look at this stuff in such a different way now I'm shocked. I also look at buying and bringing more things into my home completely differently. This mind shift was the boost I needed to make a real difference in my home and the results have already been so amazing. I still have a ways to go but thank you so much for helping me get here. You came into my life when I truly needed this kind of friend. And as a fellow Minnesotan it's so fun watching someone go to similar places and be dealing with our lovely weather😂 I can't express how grateful I am . Thank you Dawn.

Oh Dawn, I am so grateful I have found you and your sister on RUclips. You have both inspired me in COUNTLESS WAYS!!! I am a 62 year old clutter-keeper. I keep everything for memory sake, because I love it at the moment, because I might need it, … So many reasons. Well last week I decided enough is enough. I have a 2,000 square foot home plus full walk up attic (instead of a basement since I’m in the south) and a packed garage. It’s only my husband and me in the house, but my 3 kids and spouses and 6 grandkids come over all the time. And I have an in home family childcare. So I do need more “things” than the ave 62 yr old, but I have an enormous amount over any needs. It may take me a year, but I’ve already started the donations!
I know you’ll be encouraging me along the way and I’m grateful!!!! Thank you for sticking with this for 8 years. I know I can do it too!!!

I love you Dawn! I've been on the decluttering journey for years now. I caught up on all your videos and wait expectantly for each new one. I never tire of hearing your helpful tips, lessons and truth. You have truly changed me and my family's life. I love life and I love getting up each day without feeling overwhelmed. I got rid of 60 percent of everything. My husband is not on board yet so I must respect his boundaries. My biggest achievement in this journey was to realize that there are only a few items that I could not live without, the rest I keep because I use them often. I really love the feeling that if I had to suddenly pack up and leave, everything is replaceable eccept a very small amount of memories and documents. It makes me feel so free. Now I just start each morning with my simple daily routine and if I have time I add an extra chore in. I check my house weekly for things that snuck in and need to go immediately . Decluttering is my new way of life. It keeps me happy, sane and at peace in my home My house is presentable, not perfect every day. My life is definitely simplified. Thank you! Thank you!

It has helped me with shopping for things. Also it helps for planning travel, if a trip is worthwhile for the cost. Thanks Dawn! I appreciate you and your advice.

I don’t think about how much I spent on it, what my intentions were, or if it was a gift, if it’s not being used it’s going away. My theory is, have what you need & love what you have. This video really spoke to me when you made a comment about things in the house bullying you. My mother died 10 years this June and I took 2 plants home from the funeral. This last few months have just been crazy and I let them die. I felt so guilty about letting them die that I just left them there glaring at me and reminding me that I was failure. A few days ago I got fed up with myself and I went in there and removed the dead from the pots. They died. I moved them into a room we hardly go into and so it was out of sight, out of mind. I feel so much better now when I look at the inviting pots that can now hold some other beautiful flowers. Thank you!

I also started decluttering around 8 years ago. I had 3 children at the time, a 3 year old, 1 year old, and a special needs newborn. I started with just my personal items, then household items like kitchen stuff. I found your channel 3 or 5 years ago. I'm not exactly sure. But the first video I watched was about decluttering kids clothes, then I moved on to the videos of you decluttering the kids toys on that landing that is now the boys room. That was I started getting rid of kids stuff. Now I'm just in the maintenance phase but I still really enjoy your videos. When I get in the mood to declutter I can go through the entire house all at once but I remember the time when my closet alone took all day long and made a huge mess of my bedroom. Hopefully that can be motivating to someone just starting and feeling overwhelmed. It does get easier🙂

Amen and a million thanks for your wisdom, experience, and love. This video really choked me up as I have not only decluttered my things, but the toxic relationships and shame and other life junk I’ve carried with me for too long. I owe so much of “letting go” to you, because step by step you’ve given practical steps, encouragement, validation, and love to move baby step by step, by giant leap forward. As each thing got easier to let go, there was freedom and joy, which made letting go of the “tough stuff” easier. Now, although there are life circumstances that are difficult, I have the freedom and strength to let my faith have more room to move in my soul. My stuff and all that toxicity is no longer taking up my mind. Blessings and grateful thanks to you. 🙏🏻🙌🏻👑

I really have to thank you. I originally thought I just needed to organize my stuff, but I didn’t understand the value of decluttering until I came across your RUclips channel. I got rid of about 75% of my stuff - duplicates, don’t use, don’t need anymore - and can’t be happier. I have space to put things away and tidying up is so much faster and easier. I continue to declutter on a regular basis.

I'm new to decluttering, but I'm making progress. We've donated two carloads of stuff with lots more to go! I'm a licensed childcare provider, which automatically makes me a hoarder, with toys, books, puzzles and equipment for all ages! (and all the stuff normal people throw away: toilet paper rolls, baby food jars, coffee cans.) And paperwork: lesson plans, records, ideas for activities. I am organized but still have SO much inventory! I'm becoming more critical about which things to maintain, though. Thanks for your videos! It helps to see a family with children dealing with this.

I had a lightbulb moment from one of your previous videos that I struggled to let go of things because I feel condemned about buying them in the first place, but your reframing the value of the object from being about money to being about the experience was absolutely liberating. I've been watching your videos since 2020 lockdown & it has helped me sooo much. I started decluttering my belongings then helped my hubby later - and at the time we were still living in our motorhome (full time RV retirement - 1st half). But not just the stuff, but I began to realize that I was happier & less stressed out. After visiting my mom just before lockdown, I knew that I was super stressed because her house is a horder haven! 😢
Since then I've come to realize that I still like my house with some personal memorabilia from our travels but keeping our place simple but cozy. We have since last June made our 2nd half of retirement in a small house on 1/2 acre just outside of Paducah KY (never knew that this would be our new home, but we love it) ❤ The fact that we have just the furniture we need & simplified our belongs, it's so easy to keep up and manage our new home. Thank you for your videos & that I also found other fellow minimalist/ cozy living RUclipsrs that help me out! 🎉😂🎉
