  • Chris Ryan shows you how to shallow the club shaft with your driver.
Many golfers struggle with a club shaft that is too steep during the downswing, but this exercise and drill can help you remove the steep shaft from your golf swing and this can often lead to more distance and better golf shots on the course.

Great comment Ivan. I've played with many fine players, some of them have a plus rating, and if I play enough times at my 7--9 handicap, I will get lucky once at least once a year or over my lifetime I imagine, and beat them over 9 holes or even 18 even up. That would never happen with a tour player. Chris is a tremendous player I'm sure, but the EU tour or PGA Tour equates to about the best 300 players on this planet. There are another 10K players on some kind of tour, mini tour etc...that are just a step behind etc... As far as instruction, I'd put Chris in the Rolex league myself. Just plain awesome instruction.

Thank you again. Great video. This is a valuable video to get a shallow shaft. RUclips is full of videos instructing you to drop the shaft and i used to get to far behind me and get stuck or force me to stand up, not a pretty shot. Lost a lot of balls. Can't wait to try this on range. I love this youtube channel.

Chris this is a wonderful explanation of how to correct (me) a back swing that is too steep. I love the drill and will try this out. I tried to correct my steep swing by taking the club back on a more level path but this often resulted in getting stuck in the backswing. Thanks again.

Great video , can’t thank you enough , Always used to hit a high bombing draw with the driver as my natural shot but like all amateur golfers I took the advice of the Sunday 14 handicap who knows everything lol 😂 He said I was swinging the club too much around my body to be consistently good when in fact I was just shallowing the path not intensionally but as my natural swing path , Tried getting more upright or steep and disaster , high miles to the right and short drivers destroyed my game and confidence , could not find that natural feeling again and my handicap went from a solid 7 to an absolute hacker in no time . You have no idea how much this drill has helped me rediscover the feeling and smile as that big bombing draw goes 35 yards past my mates again lol 😂

    • @riggz5496

That’s interesting as a beginner I also hit a natural draw with my driver. I would find a lot of my friends would comment on that and I didn’t even realize what was so special. Of course as I “learned” to golf my swing started to steepen and now here I am trying to learn how to hit a draw with driver again 🤣

Really like the way you explain the motions. RUclips is always taught in 2D, which makes for a lot of misunderstandings and regression. Important that you mentioned shallowing while turning and demonstrated that, as well as proper club path. Much easier to visualize. I'd like to see some instruction on the left arm/elbow motion and follow through. As someone who occasionally has a bad day of pull-hooks, I think this is where my problems are worst. Especially when my right elbow is painful.

Sparked an aha moment. Within the last couple of years of trying out clubs, two pro's told me that I have a steep downswing but in the end I correct to hit the ball well. I had a Zepp 2 device lying around and took some swings using the driver with it on last night. Gheeeez. The club plane was averaging about 25 degrees positive. Watched some videos but they seemed to point towards keeping the right elbow in or dropping the arms behind me and that wasn't helping me at all. The clubhead/plane was still too steep. Watching your video I am pretty darn sure I move my forearm or wrist in such a way as to create the steep clubhead. Looking forward to getting home to practice your technique tonight. I imagine this would also apply to irons as well?

Thanks for the insight Chris , enjoy and learn from your videos. I was a 12 cap didn't play for a few years , back at it. After my wife taking a video of my swing in Hawaii last year , thought I was going to die it was absolutely horrible. I guess at 53 by body has tightened up. So after some work I have changed a lot in my swing biggest part, follow through , shallowing the club transition ect. When I drop the club inside ( my driver ) I seem to be hitting down on the ball , causing a very low ball flight , goes a good distance. Any tips on what causes this.

This is exactly what me and my coach have been working on but I feel at speed I can’t shallow the club (with the driver) I feel I can do it with irons as I let the weight of the head pull the club down! I’ve resorted to putting the ball way forward in my stance (driver) and slowing my swing down. I feel Iv got loads more power that I can’t use resulting in less distance. Have u any drills that I can try to get the driver moving in to out or maybe bumping the hips forward first would help me to stop getting that shaft steep. (If that makes sense) lol

Thanks Chris. I'm steep in transition but then get "stuck under and behind" (thus need to early extend and have an upright shaft impact position) resulting in a delivery position pointing way to the right leading to either straight pushes, or I flip at it to try to rescue it leading to a hook. All the talk on RUclips about shallowing the shaft to get the CoM way behind me etc makes sense but is confusing to me (as I've been told I'm "stuck" way behind and under) and now I don't know what to do :( I'm already steep then stuck under and behind. I'm desperate to find a way out of this position and my golf game has completely stagnated and plateau'd. I'd really appreciate your comments.

Chris, so many good videos ..as I've said before .. big improvements this passed summer's ends because of them! I also get steep in the downswing but I seem to lose power when I try to shallow the club or when I try to get my trail elbow in front of my trail hand on the way in the downswing. Something to consider, in my case, I have shorter upper arms than most. My son says I have T-Rex arms .. 1/3 upper 2/3 lower :-) .. Would this naturally reduce the amount of "shallowing" that I can perform. Too many Welsh and Irish coal miners in my genetic linage. :-)
