Using cheap portable battery LED Panel Lights outdoors on cloudy days for video and photography

- Battery powered small LED panel lights are wonderfully lightweight and portable for video and photography so anyone with a camera can light a face or product. Today we test to see if they are bright enough to use outdoors on a cloudy overcast day in Kentucky on a farm, both in the open and in shade. LED panel lights are inexpensive, very lightweight and portable for travel, hiking and putting in luggage or carry on luggage with very light weight. They also use standard basic cheap NP batteries which are much easier, less expensive and more fun to use than expensive custom batteries for lights like the Zhiyun G60 or X60 or X100. Of course those Zhiyun lights are needed for bright sunny days because they are more powerful, but for grey cloudy overcast days or in shade, LED panel lights could be used in many situations if the ambient light is not very bright. Of course using multiple lights helps a lot. The LED panel lights used in this video are

There’s no better feeling than knowing I chose gear that’s Markus approved!
So nice you and Cara are visiting your mom in Kentucky, thats special ❤❤❤ good tips for lighting , thank you 😊🌲🌲🌲🧚🕊️💖
I love cheap lights! And Markus too!
I love Marcus and Cara and I don’t even know them 😀
Sat here in the UK looking out of my window thinking maybe I won't go out to do any photos today, then Markus shreds the crap UK weather. Thanks for that haha! Maybe I'll try something with these lights :)
Man you described spring weather in Kentucky. If you ever want to photograph in a cave while you are in Kentucky let me know. Great lighting.
These educational videos have taught me so much. So thanks very very much for all of your efforts.
You're very welcome!
Thanks for all your educational videos
Thank you for sharing....absolutely love this one! I love the np batteries too. I think the dual np led lights are more my style. Too many choices!
what a timely film. i just bought two lights and have been playing with them. i'm about to retire one of my dogs from my comedy series here as his spine has failed and my bounty hunter only comes in the night. so i need to illume her. i have used flash lights and work lights at various spots but these new lights i can control for lumens and color.
thanks for posting this. i hope someday i can buy you a coffee of your choices.
I really love watching your videos, I've learned many things about the gears for photography and video (even though I don't own one yet). Soon I will be able to use the things I've learned from your videos. Thank you Markus.
Glad you like them!
Markus, I really appreciate these videos and your tips are great, just get out there and be yourself and have fun. Many Thanks!
Another epic video, please do more outside light tips!!!! for video
Awesome video Markus. Thank you for always bring the budget option to RUclips!
Came here to share that for a few hours i became one of the happiest men i could be. I was gifted an old vintage video recorder. Nothing too fancy, no majestic survivor of time. It is the Blaupunkt CR 8100. It looks like factory new. The bag is huge, stable and in a perfect condition. It contains cables, the manual, stickers for to mark the cassettes, shich it included 5 of them. 2 rechargeable Sony Batteries.
It turned on. Wow! That was cool! But in the end i found out it was still broken and my local stores told me they wouldn't fix it either because its an uneconomical and too difficult repair.. men that left me sad. It was a gift from an old lady in my small village, the canera belonged to her passed away husband and i wanted to honor him by using his equipment. Unfortunately not always is the old stuff made to last.
Beautiful farm! We get similar weather in the PNW area too! Some great advice once again! And the Rx100vii delivered nice colors too!
Love this knowledge you’re sharing! It’s awesome!
It is my kind of weather, lol. TY.
I simply love both of you! These are awesome tips!!
I remember once I was in a dark restaurant with my daughter. I really wanted to take her picture, but it was very dark and the only light was a candle on the table. What's wrong with the restaurants nowadays? I think they just don't want you to see the prices in the menu. 😁 Anyway, I turned on light on my phone and her phone and sure enough those too lights made a world of difference.
just what i need for this weekend
5:45 exactly
probably gonna get a pair of godox 64 and a pair of those yongnuo
Who would not want to have a 3 point light setup follow them around all day haha BTW Kentucky looks great, it feels just like home in Germany!
Bad storms for KY today - to include tornado threats. Stay safe, and keep taking photos!
Equipment reviews are even better when we get to see these real world applications.
Yes, looks a lot like UK lighting..... Changeable, interspersed with rain. The variability of outside shooting with highly variable cloud can be tricky to manage if you are seeking a relatively consistent exposure. Flat grey sky or sunny or indoors is way easier to manage and set up for.
I'm new to this, but maintaining a consistent exposure is tricky on manual only (in windy, rapidly changing sky conditions). Auto or quick manual +/- can help, but even then is harder to manage than constant lighting. Purists argue for a 180 degree shutter angle or 1/50th at 24 or 25 FPS. But this is one of easiest things to flex (quicker, not slower) and hard to spot for relatively static shots. ISO too, up to a point, apurture less so unless starting in mid range (say f4-f8). VNDs can also help too, but each of these variables (to compensate for rapid light level changes) has it's drawbacks. Maybe it's just my inexperience, but I much prefer stable light levels, unless it's a shoot about dramatic stormy weather. How do others, more experienced than a newbie like me, handle this?
Have fun on the farm!! :-)
@MarkusPix, any chance you can try a similar video with the Yidoblo 100 backlit by the sun…. That is, if you get some sun at the farm???

@@MarkusPix, Ha, I hadn’t gotten to that part of that particular video!!! Thank you sir!!!

Nice lighting, but your eyes look a little strange with all of the catchlight.
Ok you not far now come on to Ga.
Beautiful farm. Thanks for the video. Have a question for you though. What would you use as a video camera light on a mirrorless camera in pitch dark in the forests at night. Not really blogging so I'm not really showing my face. I'm using it for Bigfoot hunting. Some people may get a laugh out of that I get it. Lol. I'm always thinking I need the brightest light on my camera to expose it right so don't have to turn up the ISO so far. Right now I just have a smallrig rm120.
Here are 50 choices from dimmest to brightest ttps://ruclips.net/video/NVYCnqFiqdA/видео.html
@@MarkusPix thank you

Thus Here and related to YIDOBLO NP-F powering capabilities i wonder if it is better to use 2-3 panels. I use big ones 40W, each requiring 2 NP-F batteries each on lightstands and 1 11W Neweer 176S light you recommended attached to camera/tripod directly. It gives light from below. Could potentially install another one... or switch to 2x yidoblos 30W on stands? Carrying 4 lightstands seem excessive for me, personally.
Idk what it is about your videos that give 2011 RUclips era lol. Not a bad thing though
Everyone is trying to hard or be a star and an influencer, just be yourself and carry on
Hi Markus. Godox LEDM150 LED?
Watching this from the UK. 😂
(In your best Jean Luc Picard) “There are four lights!!”
Yes, the weather is truly like this in England all the time 😆 Markus keep your great videos rolling 👍
I would highly recommend you look into the Canon Vixia HF R300. It's hands down my favorite camera. It's a tiny sensor and frankly not a great image at all. But it's the PERFECT lo-fi look and the quintessential early 2010s digital camcorder. Beautiful colors and a nostalgic image in a small package. I know you talk about camcorders all the time but wondering if you have looked into that time period much yet.
I've been enjoying my VX981 and will probably use it more, but it just doesn't have the same character that the R300 has.
Markus is the Master of light, but watch out because Cara is taking the spotlight 😅😅
Have a great vacations guys over your mom's house.
Thank you for your tips Markus. Can you make a video how to shot video look professionally for YT with IPhone for people who can’t afford camera?
Hey stop by while you're in town 😀
But Marcus, we need to spend a stupid amount of money on high end professional lights to get good lighting. Good video on minal lightning setups.
Your mom has a really nice farm. There is a cowboy in the video at 2:49
You took me off Jj and miycky for this 😡
OMG! Cara is so adorable!!
There! Are! Four! Lights!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hey Mark, instead of using and carrying around 4, 5 light panels, why not just use a large ring light?
Ring lights suck, I will make a video about that. The reason I use small panels is because I travel a lot and need small lightweight portable stuff that fits in luggage and takes up no space.
Hi markus. May I ask what did you shoot this video with? I love the look. Nice and crispy with perfect color.
The usual Sony RX100vii pocket camera
@@MarkusPix OK, let me just go look up these cameras...um....uh oh, a bit on the expensive side! I'm going to stick to my trusty old Panasonic LX10 for now. It's beat up, the flash doesn't work, there is dust in the lens, but it still takes the best, sharpest video I've ever personally taken with any camera.
I have two small LED panels, 25 LEDs each, I think, which can make a significant difference to a lighting situation. They have controllable light levels. And, if I am desperate, I also have an LED worklight, 16 LEDs, no control, which can be pressed into being a bounce light or illuminate something for a closeup.
They each run off one or two AA cells, and can squeeze into a single body, three lens camera bag.
They might not rescue an outdoors or semi-outdoors situation like yours but can be great in poor indoor lighting.

I sure appreciate your channel! I think you saved me from a few stupid buys! Lol
Glad to help
Love your photo hacks....is there a formula to convert wattage to foot candles ?
No but I have one for hand candles
I thought you want to travel light (pun intended)? That’s a lot of 960’s to carry with you.
Yeah I was embarrassed I brought those, way overkill. These little panels do fine with tiny 550s
I would have swapped them and had the bottom lights up top and the top lights at the bottom.
yes I was thinking that too but was lazy
Would that kind of setup work for school photos? Seems it would. Likely shot in a gym. I’m thinking about trying my hand at portrait photography (never done it) for free for our local Christian school. Save them a few bucks.
You definitely could, but its usually more professional to use a brighter light or flash with a white umbrella (which costs under $10). You could even use a speed light but I suggest an AD100.
@@MarkusPix Ok thanks will do. I have a 580 and a 430 and a couple of the little 8” Neewer panels . I could add a couple of continuous and some soft boxes and probably get a decent result. Thanks for responding!
@@MarkusPix Well I took your advice and got an AD 200 and a couple of AD 100's and a receiver to trigger a 580 speed lite. I will learn with that!
I like cheap LED-Lights, it's insane what's possible today. But with lighting as an art form, wouldn't it be better if one side had more light than the other? So in the second setup the sky would be your Rim and two lights the key and the other two fillers?
If you're 30 or younger yes. If you're in your 50s or 60s like Cara and I are, then no
@@MarkusPix Ok, fair point. 😅Even if I don't think you both need it.
I didn't know you were from kentucky! (I grew up in Louisville:)
I'm not. My parents moved there in 1980. I was born in Germany, grew up in Canada, went to art school in Florida, worked in Hollywood 20 years and now live in Vegas.
@@MarkusPix oh cool:) I knew you had been all over-this was the first I saw about ky. (I was born in 1980:) which art school in florida?
Thanks Markus. I was wondering what would happen if I took some panel lights outdoors. Now I know.
Markus you could have said you were on a farm here in the UK and I would have believed you - that weather is typical of what we get most of the time for sure. Thanks for another, great video.
I miss that part of the country!
