  • Created in Berlin, Bitwig Studio is a DAW for Windows/macOS/Linux that allows anyone to design sounds, build instruments, and make music.
    This session will demonstrate Bitwig's duality as a modern production tool and sound laboratory. We will examine unique workflows for composition and how our open controller system adapts your hardware to intelligently control your project. We will use our Sampler to mine audio for new sound design ideas. We'll see how every device and plug-in is destined for animation with Bitwig's three dozen modulators. And we will wire up modules in The Grid, our modern sound-design patching environment.
    Come see what sets Bitwig Studio apart and how it can help you today.

    This is absolutely incredible. I'm a long time Pro Tools and Logic user -- I'm finding these creature comforts and musician-forward ideas just out of this world. Not to mention the conveniences it offers. When it was scanning my plugins, it found a plugin I demoed forever ago and never bought. I guess an iLok popup showed up on a different display, so it gave me a little notification letting me know that the scan was taking too long and that I should look for a popup somewhere. Like wat. What dev has actually thought through that enough to think to do that? Not to mention: having a centralized notification center? Um, YES. The plugin sandboxing concept is revolutionary all by itself. The devs' thoughtfulness and consideration for the end-user brings me more joy than anything has in a long time. It's genuinely heartwarming. Now please give us GUI theme editing and I'll name my next child "Bitwig". :)

    Around 8:30, the bounced hats sound fairly different than the midi hats, which is due to the clip stretching happening, shown in the panel on the left, the box that says "stretch," for those wondering. Bitwig can default to raw if you prefer (I sure do)

    BitWig 5.1 is amazing! The blend between launch pad and arranger is superb, and studio integration including sound design features are truly unique and paradigm changing. Most of all -- all this deepness is implemented with such a clarity and elegance! Bitwig native devices are vast and super hight quality and reflect its truly modular natire. The only thing I found missing is a device that could be called "MIDI Instrument" -- similar to "HW instrument", but it returns MIDI instead of audio --- this is for seamless integration of all those hardware MIDI devices like sequencers and arps, think NDLR for example.

    I'm fascinated by Bitwig, and love the ways it opens itself to creative uses. It baffles me that it forces the user into a stereo-only routing model. I'd love to use all of the tools of the grid for quad performances. Until then I have to piece things together with VCV and other modular software, but it's nowhere near as elegant. Here's hoping for Bitwig 5!

    when will BITWIG have step recording implemented ???? .. very basic and essential feature to any DAW .. also when will BITWIG improve the mixer section .. very wide channels that wastes screen real estate .. that becomes hard to navigate left and right when you have lots of channels ?? .... same for track width in scene view .. track width could be set to be reduced further such that we can stack MORE tracks in one screen .. IF YOU WANT BITWIG TO TAKE OVER CUBSE .. please enhance the layout such that one would be able to work with LOTS of tracks with ease .. I have BITWIG and been hoping to see it adapting to large track count ..

    The only reason i prefer using ableton and fl studio is because they both have the capture midi note recall feature that fl calls dump score log . If bitwig had that feature I would be using it a lot more often than just every now and then like i do, but without that feature for me personally bitwig is behind fl and ableton as i actually use the midi recall feature to make a lot of songs with and that is a mandatory feature in a daw for me at this point .

    Better fix the feedback routing in the grid , currently is dependent on audio buffer size ,which is still a few milliseconds but this is high enough to introduce charmonic content
    This means you can't build phasers with a +/- feedback set to full 100 a ( all pass filters in serial ) in the grid since there will always be a delay time introduced in the feedabck patch due to this limitation
    Or even certain fm algoritms where two operators exist in a feedback loop , again bitwig introduces it's minimum delay and thus will introduce harmonic contentthat should not be there .
    Same for karplus strong synthesis , which is a tuned delay line where delay in the feedback loop defines the pitch (controlled by midi ) , adding a low pass filter in the feedback loop to tame the harmonic content (aka as damping ) ..but once again not possible in bitwig because you guessed it : it adds a few milliseconds into the ffedback loop
    It's not a substitute for reaktor or even max msp ge , since all of these can have 1 unit sample feedback loops .
    One of the biggest flaws of bitwig grid , I am aware that most people either don't care or know about it , but I think it worth mentioning

    • @KnzoVortex
      @KnzoVortex 3 года назад

      @@jesussaddle you gotta admit though, feedback is one of the most rudimentary and essential components of modular exploration and the fact that we don’t have it it’s a fairly large limitation especially when other daws with less power do. Whatever effort they would have to put in to developing it in the grid or outside of it would be absolutely worth it in my view, even if it took a while.

    I only just learned Bitwig was a real contender yesterday. Though I've seen and heard the name many times. the name "Bitwig" always gave me the vibe of a cheapy £29.99 baby DAW, like the kind that come free with super low-grade consumer hardware.
    I wonder how many others dismiss it completely just because of it's silly name. FL Studio is still trying to prove it's not a toy, despite changing it's name from "Fruity-loops" 18 years ago.
    Naming is very important in the DAW industry it seems. You want to sound as "Pro" as possible. Even if someone isn't very smart, they still want to pretend they are and be proud to tell people they use software. Just don't rename it to "BW Studio" lol.

    I wonder which approaches to automation connection were considered? I understand that it is not shown explicitly to reduce clutter, but when I started I found it extremely frustrating. I click on automation source, then click on a target ant nothing happens. Did I make a connection? Which connections are there? Hey. Bitwig folks can you tell what I did wrong here? You should, really. I did forget to drag the modulation amount. In your presentation you did not even mention it, assuming viewers will figure it out themselves. There are many things in bitwig that are not intuitively obvious until you know them. But I am afraid that the developers are not even aware of it. Dragging plugins into FX or NOTE button of the source plugin to allow connecting automation is pretty convoluted. You can do it once you know what is happening. Allowing to connect automation by drag&drop would be a lot more intuitive. Also it would help that in automation connection mode, lines or arrows would show which connections are already there (those lines can be half transparent).

    Bitwig should just do like Reaper, and get rid of track types. It really doesn't make any sense. It should be all about whatever data is available for whatever devices (midi/audio signals).
    Hybrid tracks are actually just a convolution of something that should already be simpler.

    • @Artek604
      @Artek604 3 года назад +2

      What's the *practical* difference? In Bitwig, when you drag instrument onto an Audio Track it gets converted to Hybrid, same when you drag a sample on Instrument Track.

    • @KnzoVortex
      @KnzoVortex 3 года назад

      Honestly the difference is pretty ineffectual in practice, the visual distinctions between the two track types really only lets you know if that track holds audio, midi, or both, as as soon as you put audio on a midi track or vice versa, the track converts to hybrid.

    Fundamentals are still missing, to name just a small few, all the time stretch algo rhythms not present in their sampler, better management of mouse tools, better piano roll ergonomics, as well as the arranger ergonomics. This copy paste business for implementing clip or midi notes is something you expect from Microsoft's excel back in 1995. FL Studio has the best ergonomics of all the daws please study their piano roll and arranger , specially their use of mouse wheels and modifier keys. A proper vertical and horizontal zoom using mouse wheel plus modifiers. You guys have a thousand ways to zoom in and out, all of them work flow killers and annoying. All of these things sound small and minute but it is the little, tiny inconveniences that pile up big and make any software feel stiff, cumbersome and unpleasant to work on. I love the advance and complex features and technology brought to Bitwig so far but your average user isn't looking to do complex modular things at least not all the time. They are looking to do complex things with just the basics and if those basics aren't polished, if they are full of workflow speed bumps and counter intuitive interactives, then, they'll right away look else where and Bitwig becomes a specialist's daw but not an all arounder. I feel like Bitwig will eventually get there. I think the program is special but until then I will not upgrade until the meat and potatoes are taken care of. I am not the only one that feels this way.

    • @atetraxx
      @atetraxx Год назад

      Fixed it for you.
      You typed a lot of words but only said you didn't like that the piano roll zoomed in vertically and horizontally lol
      It honestly just sounds like you aren't used to it. I'm so so so so much more efficient in bitwig because of the quality of life conveniences than any other daw. Bitwig can do advanced things sure but they also have focused on a much more fluid workflow in general. Most users of bitwig feel this way.
      Don't try to use bitwig as a different daw, use it as bitwig.

    It's funny how almost all Bitwig video's are about sound design, while it's still lacking many basic DAW features.

      Not true. All I'd say it lacks is audio comping and AU plugins. Other than that, it is superior to any other DAW.

      What does it miss other than comping? So you just disregard the fact it does a lot of stuff the others don’t?

      You can also look at it differently - all those other DAWs lack basic sound design features. Not everyone makes orchestral scores or tracks rock bands. For a lot of people Bitwig's DAW features are more than enough, although obviously we'd love to get comping, retrospective recording, native pitch correction tools & ARA, chord track / harmonic editing, video playback.

      @Vic LTD Any other argument than "more stable" you'd use I'd consider valid, but not this. Lol! :D

    Nice overview, but I find his presentation style and tone REALLY annoying, sort of condescending.

    >>> Propaganda destroys greedy people. The program is anachronistic, old DOS style. It is very
    heavy on quad-core processors. It does not use the super fast memory of graphics cards. Prices from
    space. This means that the company has a small manager. I do not recommend this program to
    musicians ! I recommend clear thinking ! Greetings from Poland
