    Over the last year I've only watched your videos (and admittedly Polarity videos also) and have grown exponentially as an artist and as a person. I think your videos helped me break out of depression by discovering music. Thank you so much, you gave me a reason to get out of bed in the morning.

    RE: Your creating collections tip, there’s a better way so it will auto includes items in a folder:
    1. Go to the right search browser
    2. Click Location to filter based on folder
    3. Select your folder
    4. Right click on the file browser to get a drop-down
    5. Select “save smart collection” and there you go

    There was this questgiver with a green diamond over his head so I approached him. "Can I tell you about how to customise the new Bitwig-Browser?" he asked when I approached him. I was intrigued, so he told me all about it Thank you, good man, thank you!

    Thank you - I've been confused by the new browser and something about the written documentation just didn't gel for me. Now I see what's going on, and agree that the customization of default context views is really nice to have.

    I used to love Bitwig for how intuitive and well-designed it was out of the box. With the new browser, while I can appreciate the idea behind it, the execution destroyed the intuitiveness. Of course, you can read the manual, learn about "contexts" and create 19 presets of what you want to see when. And eventually it might be a better experience than the old browser when you put your time into it, but I can see how it can be a big turn off for new users trying Bitwig for the first time.

      Yup! One of my reasons for moving to Bitwig WAS the browser... now it's garbage.

    • @datashat
      @datashat Год назад +8

      Took a lot of getting used to. It's great once you put the effort in, I just think the default choices for each context are insane. Who the hell wants to see random presets from 100 plugins in alphabetical order when you want to add an instrument?

      Hi, there's a good Mr Bill video about organisation somewhere, where he uses Resonic to sort them out. Unfortunately there's no easy way to do it - mine were all over the place either in self contained packs (e.g. vengeance), folders called 'random' where I couldn't be arsed when I got them, a real mess. Resonic is like Explorer for audio files and is super fast - there's a free one that works perfectly well for organisation, the paid one has loads of nice features (I got a free trial of the paid one which resulted in generating even more samples just from mucking about with it - just try going into a folder of any sample type then holding an arrow key to scroll through, it's fast enough to be able to preview them while scrolling and produces some incredible chaos!)
      Anyway, the process of sorting mine took a couple of months of going through all these folders - putting all the kicks in a new kicks folder, hats, snares etc etc etc - but ultimately it was worth it, painful as it was at times...

    I have to say though that most of the features you show here where already available in Bitwig 4.4. Search preferences were just called "remember selected filters when adding new ...". Collections and smart collections existed as well (and they displayed their name instead of a generic icon). I suppose the sidebar browser really has been improved.

    Re: adding lots of files to a collection.
    Bitwig doesn't have a loader animation so it can be confusing but if you just don't touch your mouse (ie. just walk away for a couple of minutes), the loading will complete and include all your material. Was having this problem last night and after a couple of different folders loaded partially, I was able to load 30k samples on the first go.

    I like the new "less columns" and more shortcut driven Browser. The context driven mode was already there in previous versions, but I think it is very important to point people on that feature, because it can ease up the workflow very much. Maybe te simplified interface revealed the power of this feature. Thank you for the walkthrough 🌻

    I'm quite liking the new browser, but it can be quite daunting to use it with larger collections. Scrolling through an alphabetical list of tens of thousands of one shots I can never seem to find the right ones. Same for presets, I wish there was a way to quickly delete presets from the browser as I'm not going to use the vast majority on my tracks ever. I might have to go through them all at some point and either mark all my favourites and set that as the standard or just delete all the packages and build up my own library. As for samples i mostly use Atlas to quickly put together drum kits.

    4:18 I didn't know that, but I think that's not so great for audio tracks and FX tracks to share the same context. Because FX tracks are often used as sends, and I'd typically use them for very different things, each kind of track will see different FX added to it.
    But the #1 annoying thing about the new browser is that they mixed all the presets with everything else. Instead of carefully curated and *short* lists of relevant plugins I have to wade through hundreds and hundreds of useless presets. So *thank you* for showing how to exclude presets from the lists, maybe now I can finally switch from Bitwig 4 to 5, so far I hated this one thing too much to use it.

    The browser still feels very awful to me. I dislike the dialog options as they often switch me to sorting options I don't need or lead me in the wrong direction. The left part of the browser feels cluttered, while the right part of the browser feels empty, like a desert. It's horrible! The old browser was actually one of the reasons I switched from Ableton to Bitwig. However, lately, I've had the opportunity to work with Ableton 12 Beta, and Ableton has done a wonderful job with their browser. At least they are heading in the right direction with tremendous potential. In 2024, it seems like Bitwig might not see much use on my drive.

  • @nowondr

    I really can't stand this new browser. It has good ideas but in its current state I just feel like I'm constantly needing to setup workarounds to do simple stuff with it. It feels counter-intuitive to me in a DAW that is very intuitive overall. I have tried to adjust to it, but I just feel like it needed more work. I am also not sure why they spent time and resources tweaking the browser which I though was fine, instead of numerous other stuff that could have been added to the software. At least would like the option to choose between the "smart" browser and the old classic one.

Specially the feature " sort by developer" . It is way more intiutive to use since when (personally) searching for a vsti I tend top go by developers since 7 out 10 times I dont remember the names of the virtual ins. For me its easier . If I want to see only Waves plugins for example ...I dont wanna see type whole system vey folder off you know what I mean. I dont like the new browser to me feels all over the place

For example i want ALL( idont know)note-fx... but this maybe12 fx i never ever need... so also not this list.... of course i can do the different (normal) Way and maybe with just 100 note FX items its more/less practible... but with with more complex list and 1000+++ "collections" and so on... the other way, the NOT way is much much more pratical.... any idea/hack...? And yeah i woluld like my MOST FAVORITES on top, indepening of ABC_ odere, then a Dot-Line... than my 30 or so next (less favorites"....
    or my PLUGs/Bitwigs-Audio-Fx... in (for me) usefull cataogorys orderd , mabey with "racisst" "LINES" for faster category-overwiev..... ;-) (all people are rainbow, but the real 7 color GOD_rainbow (and its flowing eternity in between-colors inside it)... its the opposite of this hard-interrupt 6 color "pride rainbow"! This is a satanic-pervesion of gods eternity... THIS are just of matrix-shablones: And CHOOSE one of the 666 gender is just ONE color of this, is just one option... The new browser was an absolute faillure, not only in terms of functionality, its a faillure in terms of performance, it usually gets poorly indexed and it takes minutes if not half an hour to refresh,
    You want to be productive and just to do things, and this stupid browser just gets in the way, i really dont get it how they manage to make such poor decision and throw such combersome problem into their own DAW, its absolutely terrible, the individual who designed and tought about this browser being functional must be someone whos brain works totally different than the average human, which makes this absolutely wrong...
    Maybe it makes sense for someone whos brain is different, but not for the average human.
    Its unlogical to say the least, and its also poorly implemented.

    Oh my god I thought I was the only one! This new "improved" browser left me yearning hard for the old browser because when I moved to Bitwig, the browser was one of the major selling points and with v5 it was completely obliterated to shit. I absolutely HATE pictograms instead of words because I can read a hell of a lot faster than guess what a stupid little icon means. I'm still at the starting of your video and hopefully you can help me out...fingers crossed.
    Nope still garbage. I don't understand, the old browser didn't suck! It's nice you can customize what is shown but it still looks like ass. TBH it looks extremely dumbed down whereas the old one was very well laid out and made filtering so much quicker. I hate how the preset categories have the same bloody icon as the devices. I own it but the very things your discussing are why I refuse to use it. We need a new kind of daw designer who embraces a “user first “ attitude. The folks designing now are all” more is more folks “ that’s why the interfaces are littered with issues and everyone wants to be different without purpose for being so . Elegance and simplicity go hand in hand unless you’re talking about DAWS apparently. I’m sticking with Logic in both its versions for design and cues and Korg Gadget for more” Music focused “ projects because it’s clip based design opens the creative floodgates so fast for midi and audio I would be swearing at bigwig in the same amount of time I’m finishing a song in Gadget. So bit wig is a real time waster for me and that’s why I stopped using it . 👽✌️

    • @chud-dot-us-dot-gov
      @chud-dot-us-dot-gov Год назад

      It sounds like you’re making simpler music than what most Bitwig users have in mind. It isn’t a bad thing, but you may have made a poor decision in buying Bitwig. It is indeed doing things different from other DAWs but not every innovation helps everyone equally.

    • @christoroppolo8742
      @christoroppolo8742 Год назад +2

      @@chud-dot-us-dot-gov not really ..I’m just making it without zillions of protocols and minutia. It all starts with music first for me . Sounds for sound sake and modulation for everything is really popular right now but most of it sounds like shit in a mix . It’s fine ( complex sounds pumping away ) on it’s own or as a track comprised of a couple different tracks for film etc. ( mostly percussion) but more than that and it becomes lost in the mix no matter how many production tricks we apply and you and I know that . But kids now are looking to stand out with modular and the like unlike grandpa and grandma all while forgetting about creating great MEMORABLE SONGS . Its one groove with ten zillion breakdowns and no key changes generally and daws like Ableton and a couple other ones literally instruct folks to compose their tracks that way . ( steering the music with procedural protocols /production tools and shortcuts. ) A member of Kraftwerk said it best ..there are too many options now. A member of frigin Kraftwerk for Christ sakes . Hope this helps 👽✌️

    •  Год назад +1

      This actually makes a lot of sense. Will make my necessary adjustments haha. What about house?

    • @andrwwaugh
      @andrwwaugh Год назад

      House… not sure!
      Yellow?
      At least when operating lights, the colour scheme varies a lot depending on the vibe.. and the vibes with house can vary a lot.
      Cheerful stuff is brighter colours, yellows, oranges, magenta etc. heavier stuff is more red and blue, it’s rare that I’d use green. If there’s a super good vibes moment, might even go full rainbow for a moment.
      People in clubs don’t always like green lights on them if they’re trying to look sexy, but genres that try to sound alien (or paradoxically, trying remind you of trees and nature) love green.
      So less of a strong colour association on that one.
      If I was adding second colours:
      The Techno lighting stereo type is red / white
      Psytrance is green/purple
      Disco, I like Magenta/Orange
      House could take yellow
      Dnb could take blue or cyan?
      Glitch hop? Idk
      By then it’s getting towards filling in spare genres with colours that aren’t taken 🤣♥️

    • @andrwwaugh
      @andrwwaugh Год назад

      Another thing a stage designer friend pointed out to me, I think initially it might have been half in jest, but realised it’s a thing.
      Those genres have their favourite shapes
      Designing stages and decor for outdoor festival stages in Australia (colloquially known here as “bush doofs”, could be similar to Teknivals in Europe? Or just psytrance festivals that feature more than just that genre, with renegade roots.. I digress!)
      He pointed out:
      Techno likes squares
      Psytrance likes hexagons
      Both like their tessellating visual patterns, anything that looks cool is cool, a multi genre stage, you do whatever you think works best.
      But if you know you’re making “the techno stage” or “the psytrance stage”, and you want to make it feel that way, it’s a useful thing to keep in mind. It’s in the design language of those genres.
      whether it’s associations from prior work in those genres / historical context, a propensity for what looks appealing with substances popular in those scenes or the tools people liked using to design stuff with, or some strange evolutionary blend of all those things and more, I’m not sure. But it works.
      Could work for album art etc too.
      The fact that techno is often so “4 to the floor” and squares are a 4 sided shape is a nice congruency…
      (And psy often can have rolling triplet basslines… which you could be congruent with a 6 sided shape… but maybe I’m reaching now)
      Dnb and bass genres?
      I don’t know
      I feel you could use stuff overlapping with both those concepts and it would work.. especially the darker and techy sounding stuff
      Or weird wonky shapes? 🤣
      House / disco?
      Probably aren’t so geometry focused
      They could take triangles and circles (for disco balls? 🤣)
      Anyways,
      Techno likes squares
      Psytrance likes hexagons
