"Confirms." That's a good way to put it. It doesn't reveal how he's suspended. I thought the bigger confirmation was the backwards somersault. It was beautiful; but for me, the physics was well on display, and bordered on a give-away.
The rings are a great optical illusion though because it appears they both do a full rotation around him when in fact they leave out the space right on top of his center of gravity. But then again, short of using CGI and the audience being in on it (the latter being the explanation when a trick seems inexplicable BTW), how else would he do it? Of course modern 4K video would probably allow you to spot the "invisible" wires.
@@mikemurphymagicyou raise an interesting point. Embellishing the performance less would’ve helped it stay immune to time. Especially now, when basically everyone has seen clips of actors on different kinds of wire setups whether they realize it or not. As a former stagehand, that's not the most interesting part of the illusion for me. While I couldn't tell you how the illusion was done ever if I knew, as a former stagehand what really raises my eyebrows is the size of the wings on both stage left and stage right. The wings are the areas the audience can't see. In stage productions, it's often the place from which performers emerge when it's time for them to go onstage. That's the really interesting part to me. 😁
If you really study the movements of the rings, you will notice how they actively avoid crossing rings directly over copperfield. That's beings he's suspended on cables. But its just so well done. Brilliant illusionist.
Best illusion ever. Even if I've just read about the tricks he used (the system of wires are patented by John Gaughan) the smoothness and the presentation is still incredible. Seeing it live would have been truly magical
I cry seeing this every time. I saw David perform in 1980 something, with my mother. It filled me with wonder then, and it fills me with wonder now. I know it's fake, just light and mirrors and strings, but it makes me wish that I could just fly away from this life I have, just for a short time, to feel at peace and just soar.
Life is like an embroidered cloth. We spend the first part of our lives on the beautiful side of embroidery, but we spend the second part of our lives on the other side. It's less pretty, but we see how the threads are arranged.
I always loved this illusion because David makes it real in the mind and heart. He’s been blessed with God given talent to open people up to believing in their dreams and this is no exception. I think everyone at some point wanted to be able to fly. This is by far the most believable illusion because he moves so gracefully and just does it with ease. The music is so powerful and as Christ has said. Those who believe will soar on the wings of eagles. This always makes me think of that verse! God bless David Copperfield!
My favorite illusion he’s ever done. Although we know how he does it, it’s the music and the theatrics of the performance that makes it so mesmerizing.
One of the best choreography of a magic trick ever ! I just can remember as a young man, dreaming of be able to fly (like some other humans during their night dreams!), watching this dude flying so easily, without discovering any trick of course, with such an ease... man... my dream could have be possible ! 🙂Today, lots of people want to know the tricks of all magicians... just let the dream be a dream.... please.

As a magician, and mentalist - I geek out over all this stuff. I’ve never been a huge fan of the Pageantry Cooperfield uses in his sets but he does really hit it out of the part with the flying here
As a former stagehand who occasionally worked backstage for illusionists, I never had occasion to work any of Copperfield's shows. I'm obviously never going to tell what I know. However, in this instance, I'm personally fascinated by the relative size of stage wings compared to the velocity of his exit.
One clue is observed, the audience on the stage is different than the audience on the auditorium . It means , audience in the stage near him are keeping the secrets of wire technicality to themselves !!
This reminds me of about everything how calm and generous is we see you seems it seems like it has an effect on our head about what happens changes me what I mean is the music that you just and the site the area where you are so relaxing to my eyes
At 1:22 you can see the key of the illusion, in fact, in order to be able to fly, Copperfield is supported by strong and thin threads of iron which are invisible to the audience.
I fly a lot too, and very very high ,.. But only in my dreams . And it fells good when I wake up as I fell the residue of that dream. perhaps it is possible in a universe somewhere . and i remember I once had a dream walking near a stream with a tree branch in my hand , and I swear to God, when I woke up, I had that branch in my hand . And i hide the branch for many years under my bed during my teenage years and finally after years I put it in a shed, and i`d swear to God whenever i think of that branch it somehow appears somewhere in my way. And sometimes i wonder is this the same branch ? I once thought about bringing it to a laboratory for somebody to examine it . I think the last time I thought about it, it appears again outside of the house in my way and I put in in the basement. but we are talking about a decade ago. now i`m thinking about it and i look around and i don`t see it , not yet anyway. I do believe that real magic exist, but not exactly the way we think.

Incredible for its time. I also don't know how exactly it was done but I can point out a few facts. 1. the physics of his clothes when he is flying is not exactly right. When he first flew, you can see the upper top of his baggy jacket flap naturally but the bottom part close to his butt is somehow stuck solid to his back. Since wires are the only realistic way to make someone float with known physics, my bet is that some of the support is there. 2. All the audience are very likely fake, so is the applide and reactions, they are all staged. Simply because of the angle of the cameras (The seats are inconsistent throught the video) and also such a large scale production will not have a real audience sitting for hours to get things moving around. As such, in between flying tricks, they may have been hours of preparations. This gives ample time for cranes and wire placements to be changed. 3. I don't think any cg or green screen was involved because of its time. But I highly doubt this was made in that tiny theater, there is no wide angle in the video where it showed David flying and the audience watching him from their seats as you see at the end where the curtains were lowered. 4. Hollywood productions can be enormous. So can any staged shows and at the time David was a best seller. So the scale can be akin to a movie set.
While most of that might be true, I can safely tell you as a Professional Magician, I have seen this illusion performed live by David on his tour about twenty years back. I saw eight shows (because I am a mad freak of a Magician) and he performed it live every show. But for this TV Special, he did add a few things to make it look better, such as the audience onstage. That's as much as I will say. Magician's Oath. 😉✌

If you really study the movements of the rings, you will notice how they actively avoid crossing rings directly over copperfield. That's beings he's suspended on cables. But its just so well done. Brilliant illusionist.
I remember seeing this as a kid in high school and thinking "He's got some kind of magnets under his sweater!" I really thought that was it...lol
@Tarawa856 that was a beautiful reply, thank you. ❤️
You don't even know how amazing you are ❤
I don't know why people don't believe that magicians can do a lot of things by devil's assistance
Only Christopher reeve can truly make us all believe for only he is the true superman of us all amen for the dream god bless
The most impressive thing is that even after reading exactly how this is done, I still cannot fathom how the rings going around him works
Watch one hoop, not both, you will see that they don't individually go around him.
🙂Today, lots of people want to know the tricks of all magicians... just let the dream be a dream.... please.
I guarantee that even if they knew how this was achieved (assuming that I myself know 😈), no sane illusionist would want to try and replicate it.
I saw him do this twice live and loved it
Did you see him pull those stunts too or????
@@aliyyenman6181 stunts? Would call then illusions
@@scottcollins141 Im talking about those flips and turns during flight... Did he do them too when you saw him?? Bet though you didn't see any wires holding him
@aliyyenman6181 he did those flips and was put In a box and had metal rings put around him
@@scottcollins141 That's awesome! Wonder how he does it
still wonderfully performed !!! beautiful piece
Saw David live in Vegas last week it was amazing
I watched this as a kid at my Granny's house in Oklahoma. I was blown away.
Just a brilliant performance and illusion.
I saw this as a kid, it was very anticipated that it was on tv especially since we did not have cable. I dont know what it is, but this makes me very emotional.
So amazing show
This flying same with my friend ever said that silvina anggraini from west sulawesi indonesia about flying without wing , amazing david
Still the most fantastic flying sequence I have ever seen.I wonder if they used the Zoptic effects system?
i remember this, and also when he got cut in half by a saw 😱
Anyone else here cos of Thomas Sheridan? 😂😂
Yep 😉
Yep
Yep
long live the tribe
Aye😂
Yeah it was a show not pure magic, but incredible excecution, fabolous👏👏👏
Just mind blowing! Incredible craft! ❤❤❤
What a king
My Hero...
This is a perfect example of the Mandela effect many people think david Copperfield died during a failed magic trick and then we were told he was still alive performing at mgm grand las Vegas
I don't care how he did it. It is a great illusion.
Still the greatest Magic show ever! 👍👍👍
Thomas Sheridan brought me here

This reminds me of about everything how calm and generous is we see you seems it seems like it has an effect on our head about what happens changes me what I mean is the music that you just and the site the area where you are so relaxing to my eyes
Secret of flying is in his big loose pullover hiding a motor which is lifting him up like a drone and it is controlled by remote.
Even if I knew how the illusion was performed, I could neither confirm nor deny that this is the case. 🙂
At 1:22 you can see the key of the illusion, in fact, in order to be able to fly, Copperfield is supported by strong and thin threads of iron which are invisible to the audience.
To me, as a former stagehand, the very, very end is what is the most amazing. 😉
TV 📺 helped with dreams back then, not hate. Why Generation X grew up ok
@@zcorpalpha2462 chances are that if you grew up with social media, you're probably a jerk.
No way! I thought he could fly
Where's? I can't see
Helen Slater sure changed over the years!
I saw this at age 10, mind blown
I wish he could fly and meet God has our representative as SUFFERING MEN ASSOCIATION
Watching it in 2024 made me realize that David is actually Peter Pan.
Великий человек!
Даже зная разгадку фокусов, все равно он величающий иллюзионист современности. Как же это красиво и талантливо сделано! Браво, Дэвид!
David Copperfield is a wizard who performs witchcraft.
Nah, just a very skilled illusionist. 🙂
I have seen that show on TV repeat telecast probably in like 1994 may be.. and I am still wondering how did he do so?
I was 7 when i first saw this in 2004 i had hard time figuring out how he did that
David carries a beautiful lady into the sky, harry black stones bulb trick the 2nd bet ever.

David Copperfield na minha opinião é o maior ilusionista da história!!!
Miss the days when you didn’t have to pay more for ‘extra cheese’…
Does anyone, Here, know, Where l can buy, Full-Show, David Copperfield, TV-Videos(With or Without Commercials), On DVD?

@@mistermindahenziandalasnus3754 I am intrigued.
Thank you for your work and dedication to the art.

Once you know how it's done, spotting the illusion is simple.
Ok, so how was it done, then? Nobody has been able to say, or replicate the act, even after all these years.
