There was one other person who did the voice of Popeye in between William Costello and Jack Mercer, in "Be Kind To Aminals". It's a really weird voice. I used to think that it was Disney voice actor Candy Candido because in a magazine interview he said that he did Popeye's voice in only one Fleischer Popeye cartoon (because his price was so high) and that "I was the lowest Popeye ever.". But now I think that he misremembered studios and actually did some of Popeye's voice in one of the Popeye cartoons released in 1946 (and made while Jack Mercer was serving in WWII), "Peep in the Deep", with some of Popeye's lines done by Jack Mercer, maybe while he was on leave. I think the oddball voice in "Be Kind To Aminals" is Floyd Buckley, who was one of the voices of Popeye in the Popeye radio series. I have a 78RPM record of "Floyd Buckley, Radio's Popeye" singing songs from the Fleischer cartoons like "A Clean Shaven Man" and "Brotherly Love", along with an original song, "Popeye on Parade".

I wouldn't say that. These are human beings. They aren't deity to be worshiped, or machines where you stick a coin in and pull a lever to expect a programmed-response. They have feelings and moods just like you do. Maybe you've had a bad experience, but I suggest that you confine the criticism to THAT or THOSE individuals and not lump everyone in the same basket because it's easier.
I've met celebrities at conventions where things were the greatest. For instance, Taimak who played Bruce Leroy in _The Last Dragon._ That meeting was uncomfortable because he lied to me about something and even before that if felt like he didn't want me at his table, but he did sign two autographs for me. Always choose to look at the positive even when acknowledging the negative.)
99% of all famous-people I have met have been gracious, warm, and friendly. In 2019 I, met Cam Clarke, Townsend Coleman, Barry Gordon, and Rob Paulsen. The original voice-actors of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They were all fantastic.
No, I didn't ask them to "do the voices" because it was enough for me just to meet them. I already know what the voice sounds like. I'm there to meet the PERSON behind the voice. Not the character that they voice. Townsend Coleman did his Michelangelo voice without me even _having_ to ask for it. I talked to Barry Gordon about him voicing the Nestle Quik rabbit back in the day. He was engaging about that history.
These are people. Treat them as such.

In Jack's case he had never gotten screen credit as the voice of Popeye for the 22 years he's done his voice for the theatrical cartoons. Not an expert on the 60s and 70s TV cartoons though... He also was not the original voice actor, as Billy Costello was the VA from 1933 to 1935. And later on in Costello's life, he claimed to have always been the voice of Popeye, even though that is very much not the case and very obvious when you listen to Popeye's voice prior to "King of the Mardi Gras" and compare it with the aforementioned cartoon and onwards

The host is Garry Moore, who was also the host of "I've Got a Secret" and his "The Garry Moore Show."
Mercer, who was the son of actors, wanted to pursue a career in art, beginning as an animator at Fleischer Studios. Beginning in late 1934, the original voice of Popeye, William Costello, became difficult to work with. The Fleischers came across Mercer mimicking Popeye and hired him to replace Costello. Mercer did the voices of Popeye and several other characters for the series, through production at Fleischer, Famous Studios, and King Features Syndicate. He also voiced the opening lines to the 1980 "Popeye" movie. Mercer's other work included "Felix the Cat," for which he voiced all of the characters, and "The Mighty Hercules."

I know a little about classic animation and I know the best paid artists draw the "key frames" and other lesser paid technicians/artists draw the frames in between. But I had never heard the expression "inbetweener". The fact that he came up with a word I had never heard and used it in a way I instantly knew was correct by context, I could tell he was an industry insider. Thats what really convinced me.

I realize it’s about 45 years since this show was taped. Some things are still the same now as they were then. Regarding widows. I’m a woman who used to work in a stock brokerage company. I was the assistant to a couple of brokers. Most of our clients were very well off. It always amazed me how many widows were unaware of their husband’s finances, even the finances of maintaining their house. These women were ashamed that they didn’t know, even though it was their husband’s fault for not sitting them down and showing them where things were. My father was one of these men. He had all money accounts in his name only, except a checking account he had with my mother.
I sat him down and asked him, if he died before Mom, how Mom was going to pay for his funeral. I asked him how she was going to pay the bills, buy groceries, etc. he never thought about that. He knew everything was going to her if he died first. He had set up a trust and put all his money in the trust, as well as his car and the house. But he had failed to make it so that Mom had access to all that now.
We changed his trust. I was appointed both of my parents legal guardian, just in case they became ill. He added Mom and me to his trust and worded it so that we all had access to the assets in his trust and that we could act independently of each other. They both added me to their checking accounts. It turned out to be a blessing. Soon after Mom died. Dad was a basket case and was unable to do anything. I was the one who took care of the funeral and everything. Dad never recovered from his grief. For 5 years he was inconsolable. I was so relieved to not have to ask him money matter questions. He developed Alzheimer’s, and finally was able to be with Mom again.
I strongly urge all of you to check your accounts and any other assets you may have. Get with your spouse, children, a family member or friend and make sure they will not have the burden of trying to figure out your estate.
I do have to say this. Check with an attorney or the IRS, etc. Since Dad had put all his assets into his trust’s name, his estate did not have to go to probate court and no estate taxes were paid. I think if you die with less than $10,000 in your individual name you don’t pay those estate taxes. Check with a CPA or someone who knows tax law.

Trivia Time: the real creator of Popeye's voice was William "Billy" Costello (1898-1971), a vaudeville scat singer. He made 26 cartoons for the Fleischer studio, from Popeye's debut in "Popeye the Sailor Man" (1933) to "You Gotta Be a Football Hero" (1935). Costello established all of Popeye's key vocal traits, including his gravelly tones, high staccato laugh, and under the breath mutterings. But he didn't handle fame well, and became difficult to work with. Actress Mae Questel, who voiced Betty Boop and Olive Oyl, said "Success went to his head so fast it was ridiculous". One day Costello showed up at the studio and announced he wouldn't work until he was given a raise and a vacation. He got the vacation - a permanent one. Jack Mercer was indeed an "inbetweener" (an apprentice animator) for Fleischer, and he landed the replacement gig simply because studio music director Lou Fleischer overheard him entertaining his fellow artists with a "really good" Popeye impression. This became a lifelong career for Mercer. As for Costello, he toured Europe as "The Original Voice of Popeye" and made some recordings doing the voice for British labels (which are available on RUclips), until the start of World War II drove him back to the states. He ended up managing a trailer park in San Jose, California, where he died. A picture of Popeye is engraved on his tombstone.

Regarding the Fleisher/Famous Studios & later Paramount (which is actually jointly owned by Warner Bros. & Viacom [parent company of Nickelodeon, CBS, MTV, QVC, Home Shopping Network, Game Show Network, etc.], which is ironic, since the later Robin Williams 1981 live-action film adaptation with the famous comedian in the title role was actually distributed by Disney in some aspects & all three networks of family entertainment have been rivaling competitors for many years) cartoons (now under the King Features Syndicate label), although William "Billy" Costello may have been the first voice actor for _Popeye_ in animation with Jack Mercer succeeding him, but E.G. Segar created Popeye as part of his Thimble Theater newspaper comic. In fact, the strip simply became _Popeye_ due to the one-eyed, anchor-tattooed sailor's popularity, despite being originally conceived as a one-off, since the strip initially focused on lanky Olive's family, her original beau Ham Gravy & the beefy, burly Bluto (later renamed Brutus briefly, due to copyright legalities), prior to Popeye & the hamburger-mooching J. Wellington Wimpy becoming far popular than Olive's soon-to-be-hapless ex Ham Gravy, her family (who were actually prominently featured in the live-action film, since it was based on Segar's strip far more than the rerunning cartoons) & the other Sweethaven townsfolk (for example, Roughouse, the local diner cook, Mr. Geissel, a bearded salesman who adamantly detests Wimpy's "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday" mooching so much that he makes it a point to state the portly burger-eater should "kilt [killed] to death", the various unnamed unruly patrons who ultimately raise Popeye's ire, bald boxer Ox Meat - whose depiction in the 1981 Robin Williams film calls to mind just recently deceased professional wrestler, King Kong Bundy, just like how the Dreamworks resident ogre Shrek voiced by Saturday Night Live alum Michael Meyers has his facial features & stock frame actually based on a real-life, long-since-passed pro wrestler of foreign background, which explains the pro wrestling handicap match Shrek & Donkey have against Lord Faarquad's knights in the first Shrek film - whom Popeye handily defeats after switching from rubbing the head of the mystical Whiffle Hen upon consuming a bit of garlic in favor of the more memorable & health-conscious spinach plant in canned form, as the primary go-to for the source of his untapped strength, as the Whiffle Hen is replaced in animation by doglike Eugene the Jeep & we're further introduced to other seemingly fantastical characters of Popeye's world, such as the witchy Sea Hag as Popeye's first major villain before regularly duking it out with Bluto/Brutus for stick-thin Olive's fickle affections & Missing Link-like Alice the Goon from the fitting isle of Goon Land, which is, obviously, full of giant humanoids beings with long noses like Alice (who actually has quite the soft spot for the wonky-eyed, butt-chinned sailor, although his devotion to Olive cannot be surpassed), as well as finally meeting Popeye's cantankerous father Poopdeck Pappy (who, as portrayed by Ray W. in the 1981 film, is "disgustipated" [disgusted] that his only "orfink oxspring" [orphan offspring] refuses to eat spinach, even though the leafy vegetable "is what kept our family strong for thousands of years. His mudda [mother] ups & dies? And he wouldn't eat his spinach. The whole country in a Depresskin [Depression]? And he wouldn't eat his spinach...") after his son "rescues" him from a island castaway prison (which the old sod was quite happily miserable being in, thank you, no thanks to his son & his so-called morality & "family values").

Jack Mercer looked and sounded like Geddy Lee (I mean his speaking voice).
