An absolute revelation. Watched this yesterday and realised I had a terrible grip, that was stopping me from having a consistent ball strike. Went to the range today and hit 45 of 50 balls clean and straight. UNBELIEVABLE! I am so excited about my next round. Thank you 👍🏻
This a true masterclass on grip. Such an essential element of the connection to the club, face control, and proper. Mark at his very best. Easy to follow, relevant, and intelligent content that the average golfer can apply at any level. Best in the business just keeps getting better. 🙌👍💯💪
That hammer analogy really helps me remind myself about proper grip and makes it easier for my mental block of using my wrist properly and not trying to force it to much or not doing it at all!
I've been a golfer since the mid 1980s and the grip is still the thing I obsess about the most. Nearly all my bad habits when they creep in are traced back to shifting to a weaker or stronger left hand position. Great video.
This video makes a lot of sense indeed. Until recently, I was the mid-handicap strong gripper - too many knuckles showing on the left hand and ended up with some straight shots, but some blocks/pushes to the right and some over-draws to the left. A change to two knuckles has seen a marked improvement in my accuracy recently.
Thanks for this Mark Ive just had a lesson and you you are so right about the grip and how it impacts the swing I have bought a new glove and marked it up with a black sharpie Well done
I was a 12 HC weekend golfer. (Naturally good at all sports luckily enough) went to pro for lessons and they completely dismantled my golf swing in the exact way you did with the strong grip. Went to 25 HC and now finally after 12 months back to 12 and getting better and better and can now draw, fade, punch on demand. Just need to work still on in to out swing and my chopping returns especially when I get tired
Thanks for the video. I find if I understand the mechanics behind particular shots it allows me to correct them. Getting a consistent grip is certainly an area I struggle with.
I regularly pulls shots left and I’ve been trying to figure out why. I definitely have a tendency to sit the shaft in my palm and my left hand dominates. I went down the range last night and tried to hold the club in my fingers and grip club more evenly between my hands. It definitely worked and I hit fewer shots left. That said, old habits die hard and it seemed my club slipped back into my palm and I had to keep correcting it but I’ll persist and hopefully develop new muscle memory to make it feel more natural. Thanks for the lesson.
After playing my worst golf I changed my grip to more neutral and although felt awquard, instantaneous results with strike, dispersion and trajectory. Greater height and landing softer with more spin and consistent distance control. Makes golf so much easier
I wound up going to 2 to 3 knuckles showing from 4 knuckles. I also very much agree with what you say about staying Relaxed, to where you can actually feel the club head at the top of your swing. Doing these have helped me not only hitting my shots where I want them to go for the most part, but also I gain some distance as a bonus. Keeping the shoulders, arms and wrist's increases Speed. I've pounded 1000's of nails over 30 years, and keeping those parts was a struggle for a long time. Great video Mark.
Hi Mark, so so much sense in what you say. I had a good neutral grip for years, played to an ok standard. Won the club championship and a few other comps, then one day I’m told if you want to progress you need to strengthen your grip (strong is long). From that day my game fell apart, it was pure hell, it’s been a long road back, developed so many bad habits. Now back with a more neutral grip, but game still has a way to go.
Good stuff. I've been a 12 for years and hold the club in the palm of my left hand. Completely self-taught (I know ;-). These videos are very useful, and perhaps I can now break into single digits while getting rid of the big miss right. Thank You.
Thanks Mark, great video. I’ve been fighting my grip for years, always gets too strong and causes massive hooks and then that causes alignment issues. Grip is so crucial in success. I get down to a 7 and it always seems to creep back in at that time. Need to work on it.
Golf grip goals. Slightly weak grip and club across palm of my hand was encouraging cut slice for me. Changing my grip has certainly made a difference to how I deliver club face. Nice to see it explained so well 👍
Great Video Mark. I used to have a super strong grip would hit fairly straight bullets with Driver, went quite weak seemed to make hitting woods much easier, but now I hit my driver high right barely farther than my 4 wood even when I change the grip back strong. I think I trained myself into a pattern that doesn't work for every club.
Blooming heck. I was right up in the palm and was wrapping my thumb right around, so it was as far away from my index finger as humanly possible. I could have a hold like that where I'd see no knuckles and could bring the face in shut. Tension in the forearm would make me rotate the face shut, couldn't hinge my wrist at all, lots of low hooks, and the occasional massive slice. Would lift my arms up and come off the ball, no turn terrible stuff. Got that grip in my fingers and the club feels like it swings itself now. Wrists hinge where and when they need to. I got some weak high shots to start with, but they were more functional than the worm burner hooks. I'm looking forward to golf again.
Excellent presentation, Mark. Lots to digest but very concise if you can identify what type of grip you play with, your consequent ball flight and the adjustments that you need to make...
Excellent video Mark as it highlights all my faults!!! This is a keeper that I shall return to again and again as my grip has a tendency to creep down into the palm. Thanks!
I started taking 'serious' lessons a year or more back and we spent much of the first 3 lessons on grip; setting it up and then tweaking. What a difference it made. I haven't see my coach for a few months due to me being back in the UK for a while and I feel the grip slipping and my iron play has worsened. From your video I'm going to try weakening slightly on my next round.
Golf grip goals..... Found this super helpful. I have some drills from my iron fitting to get me striking a little more down and presenting less of an open club. Only a couple of degrees, but I will be re assessing my grip as a first thing on the range to see how much that can help. Thanks Mark!
I remember one of the first videos I watch from your channel was on golf grip. I was getting ribbed from my playing partners for using a ten finger grip. Your video made me feel better about my grip and now I beat them consistently.
Thanks Mark, been struggling with grip comfort and missing a lot of easy targets lately. You've given a great back to basics for me there, i will be focusing on less palm grip tomorrow. Atb, Steve
This is a great video and a nice refresher and reminder. Really well explained thanks. For me personally at the moment it's also quite topical. I'm suffering with a complete inability to hit the ball without the club face being so open it becomes a slice/shank (very close to quitting the game!). The club is on plane etc, but I just can't square the club face 😭. My local pro swears it isn't my grip, but I'm convinced it's my right hand. When i put a "grip aid" on the shaft, I'm hitting a soft draw and flushing it every time. Will try a few of these points to see if I have any joy!
In the strong grip category, also need to grip the club a tad lower, lots of holes in my gloves. This series of videos and especially the chipping and pitching ones have been some of the best you have done, in the way it's explained, so that the very average golfer (i.e ME) can understand, cheers :)
Time to get a grip!!! Another great video Mark. I love the pattern discussion since it’s a good cue for us to see what we’re looking for and playing around with. GOLF GRIP GOALS!
Working back to grip. Thanks, Mark. Certainly explains some of the extreme path movements I've had baked into my swing from the early days. Worked hard to get a more neutral grip a couple of years back and found it so strange for a while - but I recommend perseverance as, despite the initial painful experiences, it surprised me how soon it became 2nd nature. Of course I bang most things left so I'm now working on neutralising my swing path. But it certainly came from a grip issue.
Great lesson on grip, Thank you, I used a strong grip to fight the slice and I was stiff ish during the swing. A similar video of a fellow RUclipsr helped me to get a Neutral grip and loosen my arms and wrists. The accuracy improved and the whole swing feels more fluid.
Great video Mark. I am a strong left handed grip with the handle across the palm. Extreme low hook with driver, generally manageable with irons. I have a role up tonight at my local club, will definitely move the grip into my fingers and give it a go. Maybe not the best time to try out a new grip, but got to start at some point.
I’ve just changed to this a few weeks ago after a strong grip & my irons are way mor accurate with 20-30 yards extra using less effort so I 100% agree with this
Really enjoying the simplicity and education of these videos, providing information for me to consider and think about what I am doing. I think I probably have too strong a grip which as you have explained here, probably means I am over compensating on the swing. I am going to have a play with this next time at the range to see what the change would do. Thank you.
Hi mark thanks for the vid definitely think I’m gripping it wrong the hammer Image should help. Have just started taking golf seriously in the eight months or so in New Zealand definitely feel that some good lessons Is required to set me on the right path.
I've had a weak grip most of my life but when i started i had a strong grip and pushed it alot but now i have a more weak to slightly netural grip but aswell i've gotten straighter with my slightly weak grip but one thing i've added is body rotation and more of a rolling release but it make's it square me face and i dont see much of bad shot's anymore that would be a great video about realease style's as i do beleive that it's what work's for you and not what every one should be doing it's more we are all differnt not the same great video touched it nicely.
This is great, I'm falling more into the strong grip here recently. I'm still playing decent golf but need more work to get this corrected. Thanks for the video.
This year I’ve been missing out to the left, pulling and hooking mainly with driver. I think my grip was too strong so working on that now, and maybe standing closer to the ball. I’ve been hitting out of the toe a lot. Bad combo, too strong grip and hitting on the toe…not too fun lol. Thanks Mark!
Even with the amount of years I have been playing golf I never know I held the club too much in my palm. I tried to put the club more into my fingers today. Have not stuck my irons so well in ages. Coincidence? I think not. Cheers Mark
Great info as always Mark. I strengthened my grip to try and prevent weak high right shots however this promoted a cupped wrist at the top of the swing so ended up going back to something more neutral and concentrating on bowing the left wrist to improve strike. Have watched your wrist angle videos before and something i constantly need to remind myself of! thanks
Great video. I really appreciate Mark's analysis of the implications of each type of grip. Am I the only one that changes grip slightly for some clubs? (I go a bit stronger on my driver because if feels more powerful and seems to help fight a hook a bit)
Hey Mark, I have been subbed since the beginning and I have always wished you would come to Canada!! The best would be a collab with Shawn Clement! My two favorite coaches!
Swing has been great but haven’t been able to stop the left shots recently. Checked my grip and I had become super strong with my lead hand. Oops. Interestingly enough, as a 10ish handicap, I have definitely played some decent golf this season. However I was seeing the more extreme range of misses you point out - the pushes, occasional push slices, the pulls and the pull hooks. Especially with driver. I also was opening the face a bit at address to try to compensate. I'd have a series of 3-4 great driving holes and then 'out of nowhere' a massive pull or block that cost me strokes. I also found that my body was reacting to produce more heel strikes with driver to try to get the ball to bend back to target against the dreaded pull miss. Easy fix at least! Just the other day practiced a more neutral grip (which felt super weak to start) and instantly hitting straighter shots that were much closer to target.
Interesting video Mark, currently transitioning to a neutral grip from my bad long term habit of weak left & strong right hand - guessing that’s an odd one!
This makes it easy to follow and makes a lot of sense, has helped with my irons but I’m still pushing my Driver shots right. Gonna go to the range and practice some more, sure I’ll get all together eventually? 🤔😬
I’m playing off 8 and have a strong grip, sometimes on my bad days my drives are nearly unplayable, that horrid flight where it sets off lovely and then dives to the left vividly, I’m also a tradesman, I may try loosening the hands more and making my grip more neutral (although that is so hard man) thanks for the tips though! Defo something to work on next time im at the practice ground. 👍.
Brilliant stuff. Based on your description, I have a suspicion that my lead and trail hands are ‘mismatched’ - two/three knuckles on the lead but the trail hand is strong relative to that. In other words, the thumb of my lead hand Is covered more by the middle/outside of my trail thumb pad rather than resting in the crease. What kind of patterns does this produce? I’m a 14hcp and definitely recognize some of the things you described for the strong grip, mid-handicapper. Guess that answers my question?
Earlier in the season I was hitting a lot of weak high spinny but straight and accurate iron shots. I had lost about 1 club distance on all my irons and was terrible in the wind. For years I’ve fought the long left miss with irons. Realized my grip had become what for me is very weak (1-2 knuckles showing on my lead hand). This was causing a open club face in the downswing and a stall and flip move at impact. Now back to 2-3 knuckles showing and instantly started to hit lower boring baby draw iron shots and hitting my typical yardages again. Golf is hard…
When you show the grip from your point of view the wrist is rather cuped, thus showing more knuckles than if it would had it been straight. Is it from the cupped state that one should see 2-3 knuckles? Great video- since reading Ben hogans 5 lesson book I’ve had the club from the index finger down to the meaty part of the palm, but felt so much better having along the fingers.👍
An absolute revelation. Watched this yesterday and realised I had a terrible grip, that was stopping me from having a consistent ball strike. Went to the range today and hit 45 of 50 balls clean and straight. UNBELIEVABLE! I am so excited about my next round.

She’s this man a box of Z stars Mark. What a bloke

Well done
Best explanation for the grip I have watched yet ........Cheers
Very illuminating. I've been putting it through my left palm for years as that is what feels most comfortable and secure.
My golf instructor has me using a super strong grip, and I am continually hooking my drives. I’m going to experiment a bit after watching this video.
This and your wedge video may be your two best. And that's saying something because you have made some very helpful videos. Thanks
Thank you Mark. Awesome video. I’ve done ALL those mistake you visualise really well. It’s such a struggle. Much appreciated!
"GOLF GRIP GOALS". Another great and simple way how to play better golf. Very well done Mark ! :-)
These instructional video's are gold
I was a 12 HC weekend golfer. (Naturally good at all sports luckily enough) went to pro for lessons and they completely dismantled my golf swing in the exact way you did with the strong grip. Your best video ever...Learnt alot by you demonstration of what grip creates what shot shot...lovely
I love the way you explain and demonstrate the effect of the difference grips. Very relatable for everyone, and easy to understand.
Golf grip goals. Saving this to show my son who is just starting in the game. Thanks mate.
One of the clearest videos on the grip basics. Superb!
Thanks for the video. I find if I understand the mechanics behind particular shots it allows me to correct them. Getting a consistent grip is certainly an area I struggle with.

Excellent video Mark as it highlights all my faults!!! This is a keeper that I shall return to again and again as my grip has a tendency to creep down into the palm. Thanks!
Awesome video..helped me out a lot. Keep it SIMPLE!
Golf grip goals. My goal is to work on reducing the tension in my grip to allow my wrists to hinge more.
Thank you thank you thank you for this. I was letting the club get a little too up towards the heel of my palm. This video was excellent
Great lesson Mark.

When Mark is hitting the ‘bad’ shots, it’s still better than my best 😂

Great video. This is the second time of watching for me. Matchups, you have mentioned all this before. Now where is that video?
Great tips , I struggle with my left had on the grip and wondered if the grip size is to small
Time to get a grip!!! Another great video Mark. I love the pattern discussion since it’s a good cue for us to see what we’re looking for and playing around with.

Great this. Probably in the pipeline, but something similar for setup would be very helpful. Thanks for the help! 🙌
Mark great video. Great information
Golf grip goals 😉👍🏻🏌🏼♂️
Great video, that really makes sense.
Is this the best video on golf grip? .I've watched quite a few. I think it is.
This is starting to make so much sense to why my shots do what they do
Great information on the grip! It really makes sense. I need to see if I can go and apply this now. Many thanks! Great channel and excellent content!
This is great, I'm falling more into the strong grip here recently. I'm still playing decent golf but need more work to get this corrected. Thanks for the video.
A very educational video thank you
Good stuff. Often misunderstood how important grip is
"Golf grip goals", great check points to keep your eye on.
Great info thanks Mark
Golf grip goals … a useful check-up
This year I’ve been missing out to the left, pulling and hooking mainly with driver. I think my grip was too strong so working on that now, and maybe standing closer to the ball. I’ve been hitting out of the toe a lot. Bad combo, too strong grip and hitting on the toe…not too fun lol. Thanks Mark!
Quality video again mark
Even with the amount of years I have been playing golf I never know I held the club too much in my palm. I tried to put the club more into my fingers today. Have not stuck my irons so well in ages. Coincidence? I think not. Cheers Mark

Great video. I really appreciate Mark's analysis of the implications of each type of grip. Am I the only one that changes grip slightly for some clubs? (I go a bit stronger on my driver because if feels more powerful and seems to help fight a hook a bit)
My golf grip goals are still not attained. It's improving but not where it needs to be just yet. Thanks for such a great lesson on it.
Hey Mark, I have been subbed since the beginning and I have always wished you would come to Canada!!
The best would be a collab with Shawn Clement! My two favorite coaches!
Nice video Mark
Hi Mark great video thanks 😊
Great info, def tend to get club more in palm, make a concerted effort Saturday to rectify that 👍🏌️♂️
Swing has been great but haven’t been able to stop the left shots recently. Checked my grip and I had become super strong with my lead hand. Oops. Interesting video Mark, currently transitioning to a neutral grip from my bad long term habit of weak left & strong right hand - guessing that’s an odd one!
Great tips I'll be putting some of them into action when I play my first links in the morning cheers 🍻👍
Golf grip goals
Lovely video!
Thanks Mark... Great information.
13:02 one of the best parts of the video
Literally the same, got down to 8, knew I had a strong grip and don't want to confront it!
Your a genius you make it simple I am of to the range
Brilliant stuff. Based on your description, I have a suspicion that my lead and trail hands are ‘mismatched’ - two/three knuckles on the lead but the trail hand is strong relative to that. Golf grip goals.
Awesome vid brah 🙏👌
When you show the grip from your point of view the wrist is rather cuped, thus showing more knuckles than if it would had it been straight. Is it from the cupped state that one should see 2-3 knuckles? Great video- since reading Ben hogans 5 lesson book I’ve had the club from the index finger down to the meaty part of the palm, but felt so much better having along the fingers.👍
Nice video as usual. Could you please focus more on the right hand in another video?
Any chance of getting slow motion shot of your take away before you hinge the wrist?
Love the Hammer reference.
great video
