One of my all time favourite megadrive games. It's such a shame it gets passed off as a zelda clone. I always come back and play this game about once a year since the late nineties. I find the music, art style, dark story and atmosphere are just fantastic. The only drawback i can think of is I wish it were longer.
A grade school friend showed me this back in the day around the time when the n64 came out. I had never heard of it, but instantly became obsessed with it and remember loving the playthrough (other than a few spots where you have vague instructions on what to do next and how to get there). At the time, I saw it as a sega hidden gem that made me wish I owned a genesis system.
Listen! Zelda fans love Zelda clones. Wether or not this is comparable to Zelda. The fact that it's even remotely comparable to Zelda makes me want to play this game.
Zelda fans love clones? Are you kidding me? Some MODERN games inspired by Zelda have got shit because they're "imitating Zelda"(poor Oceanhorn, it got crap since it was in the oven)
Scissorman just shows you the non Zelda fans were the haters. Because OceanHorn is an awesome Wind Waker clone. One of my favorite Zelda clones. It’s so good that they’re creating a sequel that’s a BOTW clone. That’s great news for us Zelda clone fans.
Looks like a good game. I thought I was getting through your videos until I realised you had over 400 of them haha, love the vids mate, currently my favourite RUclipsr.
This game was developed by Nextech, and it was also released as Shin Souseiki Ragnacenty in Japan, and has a spiritual sequel called Linkle Liver Story, for the Sega Saturn, but released only in Japan. This game was published by Atlus (in the USA) but Sega published it in Europe and Japan. Edit: This game is actually a part of the Sega Mega Roleplay project which also includes the Legend of Heroes Dragon Slayer ports and the Last Armageddon Sega-CD sequel After Armageddon Gaiden.
I recieved my copy today, it was expensive but worth the trouble. I'm happy with my purchase. It is absolute beautiful and the music is really top notch :)
I remember paying 30 euros for this game about 5 or 6 years ago. I'm glad I bought it then. A good friend had to really convince me to pick it up back then and it has become my favorite Zelda-style action adventure game. The game is super colourful, especially for a Genesis game. Same goes for the soundtrack.
Amazing honestly. Just when I think I know everything about all video games someone blows my mind with another good game that I need to get and play. Thanks SNESdrunk!
I rented this game way back when I was a teen in the 90s and I'll never forget playing through the game. I had no clue it was such a rarity. The music and gameplay was amazing!
Glad to see this game get some love, it's always my vote for 'greatest game nobody has ever played' I've no idea how I ended up with it on the Mega Drive as a kid, but I always loved it, and I could never really understand why there was no reverence for it until I got older and realised that somehow nobody seemed to even know it existed. I think it does some really cool stuff with the story and the music is great. Nice to see this game get the attention it deserves, I think it's an actual hidden gem
Interesting, all your "nitpicks" about this game are actually positives for me generally: A bit more linear, not too long, some "meh" enemy designs (I don't really care too much about this if it's only some). I might just give this one a go.
I actually like my adventure games to be fairly linear. I hate backtracking and i dislike trying to figure out where to go next. Although sometimes some exploration ( albeit) limited is good. The shortness that im not too happy about. I dont want to be able to finish it in one afternoon.
In Germany this game is known as "Soleil" and was advertised in magazines with slogans like "Better than Zelda". They got problems, because Nintendo did not want the use of the name of their franchise to advertise a different game.
Growing up my favourite Mega Drive games were Kid Chameleon, Streets of Rage 2, The Revenge of Shinobi, Ecco the Dolphin, Jungle Strike, Toejam & Earl 2, World of Illusion and Flashback. I would love to see any of these games remastered in HD for today’s generation of console
Whenever I tell somebody about this one, I tend to say something along the lines of "oh yeah it's a Zelda clone but with jumping and animal buddies that function like the animal orbs in Castle Crashers" in order to pique their interest since I know a lot of people that like one or both of those things, but I word it that way so as to not let on what a great time their in for and make it more of a surprise when they really get into it. Works everytime.
It's more of a cameo appearance than an Easter egg. From what I remember from that scene, Sonic is on vacation (so it's canon to the Sonic franchise, meaning that Crusader of Centy is in the same universe as Sonic) and Sonic has a bad attitude when you meet him.
I was just thinking about this game yesterday! I really enjoyed this game as a kid, especially the ending. I'm surprised I never hear anyone talk about this game nowadays.
Bought crusader of centy in 95 and later sold my entire Genesis collection to buy the Saturn. big regrets. should've saved money and buy the Saturn and not sell the genesis.
nimaiiikun that is the story of most of our lives growing up during this time. I sold all of my 30 Nintendo games with boxes and manuals to get an snes. and I still didn't have enough money. at the time funcoland would give you a few dollars less if you had no box or manual. I was proud I kept them all. I wish I would have kept them all. I had some amazing games. all the super marios. all double dragon games. zelda. final fantasy.
nimaiiikun i still have my original nes and snes games. I never would have considered selling them. I feel so bad for those who had to due to circumstances.
I do remember it so well, was fortunate enough to rent it back in the day and I still remember playing through it on the weekend... very good gameplay and very clever plot. Love its soundtrack too, as you can see in my uploads ;)
Honestly, if you had just shown me screenshots of this game and told me it was a Super Nintendo/Super Famicom title, I'd have believed you. It's really rare to come across a MegaDrive game that is this good looking. As far as the price goes, these days, the retro games market has turned into a real speculation driven market. Some games are just unlucky to get high price tags for really arbitrary reasons.
@Sam Keyworth, most of the games you listed are very recognizable as MegaDrive/Genesis titles from just a quick glance due to lesser sprite art quality and the more limited color palette. The only games that are of the same caliber as Crusader of Centy's level of sprite art are Beyond Oasis and Flink, which utilize certain tricks to look as good as they do. I don't know why you brought up the old 3D games, those kinds of games haven't aged very well. Perhaps I needed to clarify that by "good looking" I was referring exclusively to sprite art and to things that are generally regarded as making certain sprite arts better looking like color and pixel density, things the Mega Drive usually traded for greater processing power.
Soleil has a great use of color and the character is extremely fluid, especially compared to A Link to the Past, that alone makes it look and play like nothing else from that era, even Story of Thor is very stiff by comparison
I don't disagree with that(even though this game may have just a bit of the Shaq Fu problem. If you're fair with Shaq Fu, the animation is SMOOTH and detailed, objectively better than Street Fighter 2 when it comes to animation alone. Yes, I said that. However, because it uses the 12 principles of animation including principles you HAVE to subvert in order to make the game to play correctly, namely a heavy use of anticipation, the game plays slower. Hence the common complaint of bad controls. Which is the thing. A Link to the Past and Story of Thor are both snappier and in some ways faster paced because they emphasize faster if choppier animations. And while Crusader of Centy is NOWHERE near as bad as Shaq Fu in this front, it DOES play slower in certain aspects). And about color, I meant that colors in Genesis games are often used poorly and look like NES games with the heavy blacks and poor contrasts. The console's color palette is not as wide as SNES' but by no means it's bad(like this game shows, in the hands of the right people a Genesis game can look sweet). But just like the sound chip it was often extremely poor in the hands of incapable developers.
This ("Soleil" as it was known here) was one of my favourite games from the MegaDrive days. Rented it after being told by the Blockbuster employee that it was a sequel to Story of Thor / Beyond Oasis (it isn't) - ended up enjoying it even more though.
This ooks like great fun for sure, reminds me too a little of saoul blazer in its linear kill everyhting and move on style. Ima check it out on the old everdriv e for sure! How I never heard of this by now?
Heard about this game recently and thought it was a Zelda clone, which drew me in. I'm even more interested now that it actually seems pretty unique. Adding to my game todo list. Thanks!
I rented this game back in the day but didn't fully appreciate it then. Maybe I should give it another chance. It's a lot easier to play when you know what the heck is going on.
Been wanting to check this out, there aren't many top down games on the Gen. Seems like a really solid game, I like how this game lets you collaborate with animals and how Beyond Oasis lets you control spirits. Good review like usual SD!
i never heard of this game till now. but at the time i owned a super nintendo so thats probably why. this looks like a game i would love, so im gonna have to check it out
I found a $40 reproduction cart on eBay after discovering this game today and instantly bought it! It looks like a great time, and I’m honestly impressed with the visuals. Looks like it could be a late gen SNES game, but on the Genesis! Cant wait to give it a try!

That "wolf enemy" is a direct reference to Patra from the original Legend of Zelda. The game "feels and controls" like a zelda game but I agree with the fact it is more story/action based than puzzle solving. Great game probably in the top 20 genesis titles.

It's influenced by Zelda but it's by no means a cheap copy. As you rightly said it had some clever twists of it's own and was full of imagination and surprises. If you like that type of game you owe it to yourself to play it.
I ponied up and got myself an original cart for a bargain of about $400. I am the Root Palace (temple?) now. The game is solid, but I HATE the damn jumps....it is like playing a platformer without the right control smoothness and mechanics. Other than that I am enjoying it
Thank You. I have seen a nintendo fanboy doing a stream of this game (playing blindly) and both the streamer and his chat didnt praise anything on the game, instead they nitpick everything they could, just like how they did with others sega genesis games. Guess fanboyism is still a thing
I see your point now. But I am actually lucky for having a mega drive instead of a snes. Now that I am a grown man I can go after all the games I missed as a kid, not only with nintendo but with others consoles too. The perks of being a Sega kid, you wont become a dick and an unnecessary pointless hater like a good amount of nintendo fanboys are. Sorry man.
Thank you! For pointing out this game barely like zelda, people have a terrible habit of seeing a game from top down and immediately saying "this must be zelda"
"You play as Corona, No not that Corona." That sure has a different meaning now.
This post was made by 2020 gangs
Just call him Krona!
Lol
Totally
You never played Corona the game? It's like paper boy except you throw needles full of sketchy vaccines at anyone not wearing a mask.
"No not that Corona" sigh
1:15 No, not that Corona.
No, not THAT Corona either.

I Looooved this game back on my Genesis...emulator, on PC.
😑
And now it’s on the Genesis expansion pak library for Switch Online!

The name "Corona" sure has a different meaning now.
HAHAH OH DAMN
every crusader of centy vid i watch i look for this comment lol
@@TheGagafan666 same here
Yeah pretty crazy.
I have the game on my nodded 3ds xl
This is on the Genesis library on the Switch now..........
What a treasure
Aaah, the halcyon days when corona was just a beer. I miss those days :(
I recieved my copy today, it was expensive but worth the trouble. I'm happy with my purchase.

He says it isn't rare. Just expensive.
This just got added to NSO expansion pack. Been waiting for a looooooong time

It really is one of the most underrated games ever.
Fantastic soundtrack on this one. Really fun game, too. Glad I got an actual copy back in the day.

That sounds like a bad strategy
They even did write "Better than Zelda" on the game's box :o
Definitely a bad strategy
Art style reminds me of Secret of Mana. Wish I knew about this game before it got so bloody expensive!
Growing up my favourite Mega Drive games were Kid Chameleon, Streets of Rage 2, The Revenge of Shinobi, Ecco the Dolphin, Jungle Strike, Toejam & Earl 2, World of Illusion and Flashback.

King:”That sword... you must be... Drunk”. 😂
This game looks great! So many games on this channel I have literally never heard a word about
Doesn't this game have a Sonic Easter egg with Sonic on a chair on the beach
Yeah, although calling it an "Easter Egg" is a bit of a stretch because it's impossible to miss lol
It's more of a cameo appearance than an Easter egg. From what I remember from that scene, Sonic is on vacation (so it's canon to the Sonic franchise, meaning that Crusader of Centy is in the same universe as Sonic) and Sonic has a bad attitude when you meet him.
Is there video of this?
Sounds like finding Samus "resting up for Mother Brain" in the Super Mario RPG.
I was just thinking about this game yesterday! I really enjoyed this game as a kid, especially the ending. I'm surprised I never hear anyone talk about this game nowadays.
Watching this in 2020 i guess the beer won't be the first thing we think of when he hear "Corona" going forward
We need a dedicated Sega drunk channel.
Pedro's Vlog Yes!
Second the motion!
I vote for a Fart Drunk channel. Get it? Fart Drunk. "Fart" "Drunk".

The best 16-bit game I've played starring a dog is Shadow Dancer: The secret of Shinobi, Sorry Crusader of Centy.
"Corona recruit animals to aid on his quest, which is really cool" lol

We all made mistakes like that as kids. It's not like we had high paying jobs, or the foresight to know how much the games would be worth.
People think saving something for 20-30 years is far too long.
Corona now communicates infectiously
Now i can play this on the Switch!
I had Soleil on the mega drive and it's still one of my favourites. Great soundtrack too.
In 1995, Corona lived long enough to see himself be the villain in 2020.
the music is awesome , one of the best on the genesis. too bad it costs too much.
I do remember it so well, was fortunate enough to rent it back in the day and I still remember playing through it on the weekend... very good gameplay and very clever plot. Love its soundtrack too, as you can see in my uploads ;)

Probably talking more about the color choice.
Soleil has a great use of color and the character is extremely fluid, especially compared to A Link to the Past, that alone makes it look and play like nothing else from that era, even Story of Thor is very stiff by comparison

There's not enough SegaDrunk segments on this channel.
As a PAL collector, I'm surprised by the Genesis version's price tag.
But I looked up for it on ebay, and there is a grand total of TWO copies on it, a loose one and one with the box but no instructions. The other ones on sale are just repro carts.
Therefore, nope, there aren't "twenty copies" at any given moment and the high price is definetely due to rarity.
I'd suggest to have your console modified or buy a PAL console. Even with a power adapter and a copy of Soleil, it would cost you significantly less.
Yeah, I looked up expecting another type of Corona too. LMAO
I had this game as a child, gotta get it again
I love hearing about obscure games like this.
1:12 Man, THAT did age....differently.....
Looks really nice. Thanks for showcasing.
Played this game this year and I did enjoy it for its creative puzzles involving the use of pretty much every animal you find as well as the unique boss designs. It was pretty darn fun from a gameplay perspective.
Sadly I really can't agree on the story. I found it to be a confusing, muddled mess especially the second half where I just had absolutely no idea what was going on. Still looking forward for an Equinox review! ; )
1:48 - 1:54 = That does sound pretty unique.
Landstalkers, beyond oasis and crusader of centy are my favorite types of kinda sorta not really RPGs on the genesis
mivecturbo 4g63 there action RPGs

This should've been on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection
CORONA foretold by Snes Drunk
Dang. This game looks awesome. I can't believe I've never heard of it.
Sold this last year. Enjoyed this game. Cant remember if i got 350 or 450 for it. The genesis equivilany of panzer dragoon saga lul
That "wolf enemy" is a direct reference to Patra from the original Legend of Zelda. The game "feels and controls" like a zelda game but I agree with the fact it is more story/action based than puzzle solving. Great game probably in the top 20 genesis titles.
Soleil, the PAL version of this game is still affordable usually ending around 15-30€ on ebay.
Best 16-bit game featuring a dog is Shadow Dancer!

Aesthetically it looks like a mix of "Illusion of Gaia", "Secret of Mana" and perhaps a little "Link to the Past". Pretty interesting.
"Happy birthday, drunk!"
Well, that sounds accurate to me.
I'd describe it more as... "Legend of Zelda with the Last Bible 3 art style.."
They now have it on the Nintendo Switch under the Sega Genesis emulated games.

Sorry man.
RudJohns' gaming channel Mega Drive gamers have grown up to be proper dicks.
Remember to save your game!! If you dont you start from the very beginning! T^T good bye my 2000 gold coins..
Looks amazing
Actually reminds me a lot of the underrated game of the movie Willow for the NES.
Lucky I still have this! Bought a mega drive lot and this was in it, complete.
Thank you! For pointing out this game barely like zelda, people have a terrible habit of seeing a game from top down and immediately saying "this must be zelda"
I love this game!
I was always interested in this game, but other reviews really undersold it as "not Zelda", which is pretty unfair.
