the best part about an rpg is when you're playing really late at night and you decide to spend the night at an inn right before you save in order to replenish your health. this is especially satisfying after you've had a really good run and leveled up your character to a high degree with greater experience and more powerful weapons and armor (you know... the illusion of success when you've done nothing but sit on your butt for hours). anyway... there's usually a minute "sleepy-time" melodic piece that accompanies the act, which helps to burn the cathartic image into your mind, and subsequently aids in lulling you to sleep when you yourself go to bed after turning off the game. sooooooooooo relaxing and peaceful. =)
Hmm.... Final Fantasy VI? And I always loved the BOFIII one... no music, just the sounds of the night on the camping... Soul Blazer, when you stop the game (it' s like if the avatar sleeped), well... that song is glorious and relaxing.

I've been singing the praises of Brain Lord ever since I bought it in a garage sale in the late 90s or early 2000s. Not as polished or as good as Zelda, but it's charm and unique mechanics shine through and it's been a favorite of mine since then.
It's a pretty awesome game. A hidden gem. The levelling up system, shields that can die, jades, easy to find money, are awesome. It does have a light hearted, laidback vibe but the puzzles are great. And frustrating, but the game keeps you coming back. So glad i found it!
Damn that actually looks pretty legit... your channel always surprises me with the amount of SNES titles I had no idea ever even existed hahaha. Def gonna have to review this one myself :P
I was very surprised by this review, the game sounds very compelling to me. Just bought it cib for only $55, can't wait to play it - very excited to try out the dungeons.
No, I just got the Super NT about a month ago, I've always had bad luck with emulators. Though sometimes I use emuparadise to make sure I like a game first before I buy it.
Great review! Though you missed the point that it's slightly connected to 7th Saga plotwisely and works more or less like a prequel. Here we play as Lemele (or as he called here 'Remeer') who we know as the King Lemele in 7th Saga and go through the journey which made him known all through the ingame world.
Some of the platforming required is crazy hard (at least for me). There were a few rooms that tool me 30 tries or more to get right. I will say this for anyone trying this game out for the first time - the boomerang weapons are where its at for boss fights. Believe me, just spam boomerang in the boss fights that come after you get it and you will annihilate them.
This game is a perfect example of how lack of detail (visual, explanatory, environmental) creates an atmospheric mystery that is irreplaceable.. many games today try to do that with heavy pixelation, but most miss the point. This game cemented it's very own unique emotion through all its low-res dimensions. It's definitely in my childhood hall of fame.
I just started Chrono, I will have to play this next. Man did I miss out on a lot of great games back in the day and I worked at a second hand video game store.
I just started Chrono yesterday, after completing Secret of Mana and Secret of Mana 2. Also catching up in gems I missed, but man, with that job you have no excuse! :D
Games like this is why I love emulation so much. Being able to save and load anywhere anytime in a split second takes so much of the frustration out of difficult sections. Never heard of this game, just working my way through the SNES USA library and stumbled onto it. So far one of the better SNES games I've ever played. Most of them hold my interest for about 3 minutes, but I'm an hour into this one and will continue playing.
Fantastic game, playing this on an emu in 2021. I seriously recommend this to EVERYONE who loves the 2D Zelda games. Masses of puzzles, and masses of charm. My only gripe is that there are only 2 towns in the entire game. Reckon they should have added a different town for each dungeon. Still an amazing game. 9.999/10
4:20 Um...he's right outside. Like, this is the point where you're in the four exit room. Two doors down finds Rein waiting in the save room for the floor(It's part of a shortcut you open up nearby). Not saying there aren't other moments where you do something like it later(Ice Palace is just rife with loops, backtracking, and finding out where to go), but this one isn't one of those. I am a fan of this one, and he failed to go too much in depth into the fairy system. There are 9 types, 4 attackers and 5 support. One of the supports is a light for dark rooms, so it can be called an item in most other games. The other 8 though are useful in their own ways, with the attacks firing in different ways, and at different strengths, whereas the other four supports have different effects. You have stat raising pair for strength and defense, which are pretty high buffs at around 20 at max level. Then you have a healing fairy, and one that functions as a revival item, sacrificing one level per revival. There are places to gain infinite EXP orbs too, so he can be pretty useful there. That all said, I can still enjoy this one, though that bit he mentions with the blacksmith. My thought even as a kid was capitalistic. Namely, okay, then I'm gonna hold onto this scale until you run out again. Not too hard there. You can't, as you need his tunnel to reach the second dungeon, but still, always made me mad.

Another great video. I wish your videos were accessible in the 90's, it would've helped a lot renting games at blockbuster. a lot of times i would have to go on box art and title alone.
I've been trying to figure out what game this was for the longest time. Couldn't remember much about it except it had fairy companions that leveled up and a vague recollection that it looked and played a lot like Zelda. Not the greatest game, the story was pretty shallow and some of the puzzles were obtuse/unintuitive. But it was fun and I have fond memories of playing it with my brother, would definitely play it through again given the opportunity. Thanks for the video!
The US box art for Brain Lord has a castle that doesn't appear anywhere in the game actually, also Sachiko Kamamura (character designer of the first Arslan Senki anime) did all art and character design in this game. Opus did the music and sound design on Brain Lord. My first experience with Brain Lord was in the same SNES emulator CD that I had before.
Y'know, I've noticed this a couple times, people don't seem to realize you can swing the morning star around your head by pushing the corresponding buttons on the d-pad.
Damn, no mention of the game apparently being set in the northern US or Canada, since the characters talk about getting to the city of Toronto early on.
Hey, it would be cool to see your impression about Super Famicom Wars, a Super Famicom exclusive turn strategy game that got translated recently (end of 2017) in english. Keep up the good work, greetings from Italy!
I've gotta play this game again SOON! My mom loved this game so much that she made a walkthrough website just for it - when the Internet was still young. I haven't been able to find it since... I'm pretty sure it's been taken down by now. =/
I just started to play Brain Lord today, playing right now actually. I feel suer stupid, I am totally stuck at the very first tower. I explored everywhere and a final dead end locked door needs a key. Thank god I found a walkthrough I am gonna check out next.
I don't see how you can beat this without a guide. I only use a guide when it's absolutely necessary, after 30-60 min of being like "how the hell do I do this?"
Worst puzzles in the game have to be the "Entropy" Rooms in the last dungeon. NNNGH. A room with a solid black floor with a TON of invisible walls. Everything else in the game I found a bit easy, 'cept those rooms. Oh, and... if you want to level up your faeries... there's a screen just south of the first town (gotta beat the first dungeon first) where a particular enemy will ALWAYS drop a faerie orb when killed. Kill the enemy let the faerie get the orb, then go up a screen then back down to respawn the enemy. Fully leveled up faeries are godmode powerful in this game, especially the Attack + Health Restore faerie combination (also keep the Defense one around too).
Touts for this game: Become valedictorian magna cum laude at your magic school with this one weird trick! (...which is, getting all of your classmates killed) Although that will flatten the grade curve real quick, the accreditation process might also be difficult since your school's been wiped off the map. But then you will finally deserve to be dubbed.. the Brain Lord
5:09 for the life of me I could not figure out how to open that damn door. Loved LOVED this game. Sadly never could solve it or find a walkthrough for it.
Well, you waited your whole life, so one extra year until the answer is not that bad. I'm not sure if the floor had 5 or 6 buttons. Their values are their positions, left to right. Hint is 3 numbers, multiplied 30, summed 10. so you press 2nd, 3rd and 5th (2+3+5=10, 2*3*5=30) and door opens. And if you want t know what was inside that door, it's another puzzle. "12, 52, X; greater in size, but equivalent in time" or something like that. 6 buttons on the floor. I spent hours bruteforcing the buttons until the epiphany it was a year length (12 months, 52 weeks, 365 days), and door opened with 3rd, 6th and 5th buttons pressed. The prize for that? a cheese and a boomerang.
Brendon Melling: Don't feel bad, some my childhood mispronounciations were even more retarded; for the first couple of years I was Mega Man fan, thise games' antagonist had his name mispronounced as "Dr. Willie", while I didn't stop referring to "Milon's Secret Castle" as "MILTON'S Secret Castle" until a couple of weeks ago when I AVGN's take on that game for the first time! :D
This is Zelda if 7th saga had children with it. That sword swipe movement, exactly the same. The boomerang. Movements of PC/npc. The graphics and text are clearly 7th saga. I remember the rental, never picked it up.
TOTALLY remember the cover, but i didn't knew what was a RPG at that time, and the games were all in english and i wasn't spoking it ,so playing RPGs was impossible to me .....i need to check that one .
Can you make a video where you show us how you make these episodes? I always wondered how you line up the footage to coincide with your commentary. It's so epic.
There's tons of useful tutorials out there, way more useful than I could ever make. Play game and record footage - Write review - Record voiceover - Edit voiceover - Edit footage on top of voiceover and game music. Software used: Adobe Audition and Sony Vegas
Oh yeah. I used to use Audacity in 2007 to record songs. I also have Acoustica MP3 Audio Mixer, which is even simpler than Audacity, when it comes to dragging, dropping, and recording the sound files.
How are the controls ? The graphics looks like the 7th saga and if im not mistaked you said it was made by the same developers. 7th saga was pretty much on a grid and a full blown RPG, seeing the jumping and the fighting, it kind of look like games that would have bad controls, but its hard to say without the controller in hand.

Another great video. I wish your videos were accessible in the 90's, it would've helped a lot renting games at blockbuster. a lot of times i would have to go on box art and title alone.
I can't believe somebody actually remembers brainlord other than me
Thank you for making videos on games I had no idea existed.
great Flatley reference. havent hought of him or that tap show since the 90s.
“Drunk, you’re a strong boy.”
Japanese cover looks so much better
This game’s sword swinging and jumping is what Lagoon’s should have been like.
The ice door the answer is in the key. I remember being a little kid and my dad calling the hotline and getting pissed hahahaha
Sick to death of zelda? That doesn't compute.
Y'know, I've noticed this a couple times, people don't seem to realize you can swing the morning star around your head by pushing the corresponding buttons on the d-pad.
I adore this game, period.
Real talk I enjoyed this game a lot. Great Review.
Here is one for you Drunk: "What Super Nintendo games starring ninjas are worth playing today"
Brain lord 😆😆
Finally, someone willing to discuss Brain Lord and admit to its debilitating weaknesses!
Being dyslexic can make for some personal humor. I initially read the title as "Brian Lord" and was psyched that someone made a Monty Python game.
I just started to play Brain Lord today, playing right now actually. I feel suer stupid, I am totally stuck at the very first tower. I explored everywhere and a final dead end locked door needs a key. Thank god I found a walkthrough I am gonna check out next.
Hooray for this and Terranigma for having a jump button
i love this game. even though i needed to use a guide for most of the game. im a huge fan of action rpgs and this is quite a good one for the snes.
I don't see how you can beat this without a guide. I only use a guide when it's absolutely necessary, after 30-60 min of being like "how the hell do I do this?"
He’s still goin folks!
Maybe it's like Great Professor Bias from Choujuu Sentai Liveman Who Collects Peoples Brains to Stay Young Forever!
Ah, i see you are a man of culture!
Riverdance! Holy shit that's a blast from the 90's!
I was initially confused in this game. I didn't know you could jump up ledges.
Man... I would had loved this game as a child... Heck I'd like to play it today
I just finally got pass the Ice Castle last night and that felt like forever. Good game though.
I remember playing this as a kid and just thinking it was really hard. Looks like it's time to give it another shot!
It is hard, but it's a good challenge and not impossibly difficult. Great game!!!! It's a must have in my collection, no doubt about it.
i liked the game back in the 90s. i think its the graphics that held it back. the main character design mainly.
Ever considered doing Gunstar Super Heroes?
Yeah I'd love to see him review that
This game was near perfect for me. I always like Enix games the best (i.e. Soul Blazer).
I'm waiting for this to drop on SNESO along with the Lufia series.
Touts for this game:
Become valedictorian magna cum laude at your magic school with this one weird trick! (...which is, getting all of your classmates killed)
Although that will flatten the grade curve real quick, the accreditation process might also be difficult since your school's been wiped off the map.
If there was a psychic theme it might make some sense too
it felt like they took the 7th saga overhead sprites and made an action adventure game.. like Final Fantasy Adventure took FF1's
i think the main hero in this game is the old king that gathers the 7 heroes in 7th saga and also the main hero in mystic ark
Love that game, everything about it.
Drunk, you're a strong boy.
"Drunk, you're a strong boy" lol
?
I loved this game, had a friend tell me it couldnt be beat. So i got it and beat it lol
I used to call this game Brian Lord. I still do.
Great review as always 👍
Brendon Melling
Lord Brian the Brain Lord.
Does sound catchy.
That puzzle where you literally just press X on the door makes me so mad lol
I could have sworn you already covered this game...? Or was that just in one of your "best of" type vids?
Psychonara Productions Had the same impression... :)
Brain Lord's been mentioned in other videos, but I don't think it's received its own coverage until now.
Psychonara Productions need plastic?
SNES drunk Thank you, mane! I got Sony Vegas Pro 14 from that Humble Software bundle for 20 bucks!
Cool, if you want a free alternative to Audition, there's Audacity. After that it's just game capture stuff, most of which I use OBS for
Controls are above average IMO. Pretty fair hit detection.
Wow.This game was and is still awsome.
Love this game!
This is a really underrated game.
This game looks pretty cool! It sounds a lot like Sword of Mana actually.
Not at all like sword of mana.
I buy this one in a garage sale, someone found it in the house when they moved. i pay mostly nothing, good game, i never end it.
