    As to the question, "How popular were they?" The band disbanded in 1980 after the death of their drummer, John Bonham...27 years later, with Jason Bonham, the son of their late drummer on drums, they performed at a tribute concert in 2007 at the 18,000 seat, O2 arena in London. There were 20 Million requests for tickets...they were pretty popular!😊

    The instrument you wanted to know about is a recorder, not a flute, but in live performance the sound of a recorder was produced by JPJ on a mellotron. In the studio recording JPJ played a recorder. On Robert's pants what you are just seeing is a worn out patch of denim. Later on in other performances it's covered by a small English flag stitched over it. It has been quite fashionable at times to have worn out patches on jeans and later jean brands would sell jeans with artificially created worn patches. LZ were indeed really popular and had some of the highest live audience attendances. They didn't issue singles or play much on TV though. It was all about albums and live performances and their fame spread by word of mouth. Later their record company issued some of their songs as singles in the USA but LZ didn't want to be confined to singles which usually had to be no more than 3 minutes long for radio play. At one time though, Stairway to Heaven was the most requested song on radio. Jimmy Page, the lead guitarist was the band's creator, and producer too. This is why the instruments have time when there is no singing - Jimmy's influence. The band produced a variety of songs where each of the members had their moments to shine. They were all equally talented at their instruments and Robert Plant could use his voice as an instrument at times.

      I think the patch on Plant's jeans in this video was of an angel. I wonder if the angel was a patch placed in honor of Plant's deceased son.

      You can't say that Jimmy Page was the band's creator--the lyrics from almost all of their songs were written by Robert Plant (even on the first album, where he didn't get credit because of some competing contract that he had). Jimmy *was* the band's "creator" in that he brought the group together--but as far as the work of creating their music, they were all involved.

    • @heliotropezzz333
      @heliotropezzz333 5 месяцев назад

      @@ceridwenattwood5784 That's what I meant by creator. Jimmy created the band by putting it together. He decided the name for the band and he financed and produced their first album. He also had strong ideas of how the band should sound but they all contributed to that. When they gelled together so well, Jimmy was prepared to be flexible.

    Yes, they were popular, I loved seeing them in 1973 at Kezar Stadium at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. I was a young hippy chick with long blond hair parted down the middle with a headband and a leather vest with long tassels. Huge bell bottoms and loving every minute right down to the end when they played this, then they released hundreds of white doves into the stadium. A very magical day during an incredible time. I do have to say that I feel very lucky to have been a teenager during the 60s. I was born and shortly after rock-n-roll was born, still loving it so much I am here watching you watch them. I am still soaking in every note.

    There used to be a thing called bands. Everyone in the band played real instruments and while the singer sang lyrics on most songs, there were also instrumental parts that allowed each band member to show their skills. These were commonly referred to as, "solo's". There were also times when the entire band would just play together in what was commonly called a "jam" or "jam session". Often different band members would improvise certain parts so that no two performances were ever quite the same.
    It was "live". There are still bands today, and there are still talented artists. They make music that is much more enjoyable than what can be digitally created. When bands create music, the lyrics and the instrumental parts are equally important to conveying the message and emotions of the artists.
    It's a shame that what's popular today is so manufactured and repetitive.

    This is what rock greatness sounds like. Jimmy Page, the BEST guitarist of all. Yes, of ALL. It was sheer magic, playing the guitar effortlessly, with such complexity. Robert Plant, superb vocals, incredible front man, whose voice blended perfectly with the guitar...Led Zeppelin remains unchallenged for the outstanding talent in one group.

    • @ceridwenattwood5784
      @ceridwenattwood5784 5 месяцев назад +1

      Let's not forget the back half of the group! John Paul Jones, possibly the most musically accomplished of all of them, supplying bass and keyboards, to say nothing of little things like the recorders on the album cut of this song, or mandolin on some of their acoustic numbers, and some bass riffs here and there that can just blow your mind! And John Henry Bonham--"135 pounds of glory!" The most amazing rock drummer ever. Some people think Neil Peart (Rush) deserves that title, but I vote for Bonzo, hands down. He could play the hell out of the drums, and did, but what I have come to appreciate about him is he never overplays--he doesn't just go to town to show off. If the song warrants it, yeah, he goes wild. But if the song doesn't warrant it, he sets a more measured tone. And if you really want to see his mastery of *his* instrument, then Moby Dick is the way to go--and is the only time I would say watch it live; most other songs I would say listen to the album cut first. My favorite version of Moby Dick is the one from "The Song Remains the Same" (also where this version of "Stairway" comes from). You watch that and you will know pretty much all you need to know about Bonzo's drumming. It's a virtuoso performance by a true master.
      But all that talent loaded on stage wasn't all that made LZ what they were. Those 4 guys had flawless chemistry. It was the mix of all of them, bringing their talents to the table, that made them so good. It was...they were...magic. I've been listening to them for almost 50 years now, and it never fades, and it never gets old. There have been times in my life when I haven't listened as much, but I always come back and it is always both familiar and comfortable, but fresh and new as well. Watching reaction videos about these old familiar favorites of mine really helps me--I was going to say "see them with fresh eyes" but I guess I should say "hear them with new ears." And I really appreciate it. I love that kids and young adults are giving this music a listen, and falling in love like my friends & I did, back in the day.

    An indication as to how good they were... listen to Kashmir LIVE at Celebration Day. Hadn't played together for 27 years, but when you hear the "1, 2, 3, 4" count into the song, that sonic boom you hear next (and the entire song) is absolute gold. Better than ever. That's raw and natural talent and passion for what they do. Popular? Starbucks is popular. Led Zeppelin is a religion.

    • @ceridwenattwood5784
      @ceridwenattwood5784 5 месяцев назад

      My only comment about that is that Celebration Day isn't the original 4. John Bonham died in 1980--it's why the band broke up. The Celebration Day concert was in 2007, and featured the 3 surviving members and John Bonham's son Jason on the drums. And as far as I can tell it was a great show, and of course Jason Bonham does a fine job. But it's not "them" and I really think that for first time listeners, they should listen to the original 4. And for Kashmir, I *really* think the album cut is the way to go for first time listeners. Go to the "source material" before getting into the live versions and reunion sets and such.
      The only song I would say skip the album version and go straight to the live version is "Moby Dick" because John Bonham's drum solo during "Moby Dick" live is the stuff of legends. The other guys just flat-out leave the stage and let him get on with it--and boy, does he ever! I like the version from "The Song Remains the Same" but there are others.

    So glad this song impressed you! Great reaction! Love this tune. New Years 1979 a local radio station had contest for the top rock song of the decade from 100 up to #1. The winner got ALL 100 albums of those artists. The contest closed before the songs started. I was the first one to call with the right answer. I still have every one of those vinyls and the great artistry on the covers of some of them is as classic as the music. Thanks for doing this one.

    Hugely popular. Sold millions of albums (they didn't bother with singles) and still selling. No pitch machines, no autotuning, you got what you got. Their manager, Peter Grant, was one of the first to bring money to the band, and he was canny about merch and stuff. Other managers before that were more about themselves, but Grant was a fan. Started in pro wrestling. Jimmy's double necked guitar - one was twelve string, the other was six string, and he didn't use it for many songs, because it was really heavy. Steve Howe of Yes preferred to use a twelve string on a stand, and wear his other guitar.

      The sound was a recorder not a flute. In live performance it was produced by a mellotron but in the studio recording JPJ played a recorder.

    The only band more popular was the Beatles. Led Zeppelin ruled the album oriented world of FM radio back in the day, while the Beatles ruled the pop-oriented world of AM radio a little earlier. Stairway to Heaven has frequently topped most-requested rock and roll song lists long after it was released in 1971. To understand the impact of Led Zeppelin, I recommend reacting to the song "Whole Lotta Love" (preferably the studio version). It was the opening track on their second album, which was released in the fall of 1969. When listening to it, try to imagine a world where nothing that sounded like that song existed previously. That song kicked the door wide open for a lot of hard rock and heavy metal that came later. The level of swagger in that song is off the charts. From Wikipedia, an A&R executive from Geffen records had this to say:
    "In my opinion, next to the Beatles they're the most influential band in history. They influence the way music is on records, AOR radio, concerts. They set the standards for the AOR-radio format with 'Stairway to Heaven,' having AOR hits without necessarily having Top 40 hits. They're the ones who did the first real big arena concert shows, consistently selling out and playing stadiums without support. People can do as well as them, but nobody surpasses them."
    Edit: I see you already did react to Whole Lotta Love. Now I'll have to go check out that reaction! :)

    The double neck guitar is a 12 string on top and a 6 string on the bottom, Notice the uses the top for the song itself and the bottom (6 string) for the solo!
