This is not a lake but a smaller river with indeed flat water. Seaworthiness is dependent on WIG size. The bigger the craft the better seaworthiness, as ground effect is dependant on the wingsize.
note that the reason you don't see these machines being more popular is that both hydrofoils and ground effect planes can't handle waves so they simply can't handle the ocean. They only work on calmer lakes and rivers
Only the Delta Wing principle. Tandem Wings are constructed to follow the waves in either more distance (wave trough) or less distance but higher aerodynamic pressure (wave crest). Decisive is the wave-middle that determines the flairing height. Seastate and seaworthiness are directly dependent on wingsize, as effective ground-effect level is just a percentage of the wingsize. For example has a middle-class Flairliner for 80 pass. at a cruising speed of 155 kt (280 km/h) a cruising height over waves up to 2,5 m.
@@ingridschellhaas7041 Well, this is a very old film, must be 60's or 70's, I would guess. _[I've just checked, and my guess was correct]_ So, in around 50 years, not much has happened! I was around when large hovercraft were first introduced, I even had a go at building a couple of small ones myself, but they were never completed, due to other more pressing matters that took over my time. All the large hovercraft services gradually died out, probably because of high running, and maintenance costs, compared to a boat. It seems that the same happened to this type of craft. Any craft that uses high performance engines, will require a lot more maintenance, and repairs that a slower moving boat, and will also tend to be less reliable. The other problem is that these craft used open propellers, which are inherently very noisy. This makes them unsuitable for inhabited areas, where they would be most desired. Maybe the simplicity of electric motors that are now available will make a difference to the maintenance costs. If they were also ducted, that would make them quieter, and more acceptable. Who knows? 😊 .
@@niklar55 This is based on some ram-wing design. Lift off energy derives from thrust. After take-off the needed power is reduced drastically, which makes one of the important differences to hovercraft concepts. Maintenance is not an important factor.
@@ingridschellhaas7041 Maintenance and its costs is important, in all machines I'm not arguing the efficiency of the principle, I think it's superb. From my point of view, all the designs I've seen are, in effect, just an aircraft, with a boat hull, (Flying boat.) and truncated wings. My thoughts are, that one should start with the wings, add floats, (like a catamaran), and drives. Then add the load/people container. This would allow the best uncluttered wing effect, as the wings wouldn't need to be divided, which would remove the stresses and strains and the construction costs from dividing the wings, and inserting the load/people container between them. The load/people container, could then be supported on the floats, rather than the wings, leaving the airflow over the wings clear of any obstructions.
I have been interested in ground effect watercraft since reading a magazine article about them in the 1980's. This design is fascinating. Nearly all the others have required large tail wings to stabilize them. I am amazed that this craft can be trailered and handled in general like a normal small boat. It does seem to glide low on the water, is there any possibility that the design in the video would be practical on a body of water like Lake Pontchartrain, where the shallow depth and large area make it common for 1 to 2 meter seas to form quickly if the weather turns?
Hello and thank you for your comment. This Design was exactly concipated for ground effect needs, therefore the shape is the best shape for a ground effect craft. Handling is very easy, transitions from swimming to gliding and flairing ate smooth.
It crashed in 1980 due to pilot error. There were no human casualties, but the KM was damaged and no attempts were made to save it. It was left to float before eventually sinking a week later. The KM was deemed too heavy to recover and has remained underwater at the crash site ever since, with no plans to build a second ever made.
