It's a light empty aluminium shell with 2 pilots and a couple hours fuel. More than capable of pulling these maneuvres when so light and unloaded. I am going with around 210 tons with 2 hours fuel and looks like 20 degrees flap on all maneuvres, so referencing the performance table we're looking at a stall speed of around 102 knts, quite likely even less load (they may have stripped out the seats for this little display too and limited it to even less fuel) so even lower possibly.
Yes, sadly it wasn't until I revisited the footage all these years later that I realised I didn't have the full climb on film. It was genuinely incredible to watch.
Amazing the air supports those things when they are fully loaded, I think around 550,000 pounds. This one obviously has been stripped and is only carrying an hour of fuel.
Watching these things take off from Heathrow I always thought that the last stage in Boeing's assembly line must involve a man in a long coat with a pointy hat on and a stick in his hand. No way physics alone lets these fly, gotta be magic involved, surely. (Yeah, I know, don't call you Shirley.)
Stunning video ruined by the addition of awful background "music" that it doesn't need at all. Never-the-less, it's always fantastic to see an airliner at an airshow flying low. Not sure it's permitted now, is it?
@@nooriginalthought-air Thank you so much, will check it out. Have to say I've even bought official airshow videos that have been overdubbed with music, much to my annoyance. I guess it's to give a bit more public appeal. All the best, this 747 display really is something special.
@2:30 to @3:30 looks like an approach to Kai-Tak checkerboard then a ToGO after aborted landing. The 747 definitely had some power to give the pilot authority to take control of a situation. I saw the 777x videos from Paris Air Show 2023 this week. Current aircraft don't seem as graceful or as eager to make quick corrections like the 747. The 747's complex and massive triple-slotted flaps made it very manageable at low speed.
@@nooriginalthought-air Firstly, let me reiterate that I am in no way trying to denigrate the skill involved in this display - it is impressive indeed. That said, if you are flying a dictionary it may count as aerobatics, but it isn't what folks who do fly would refer to as aerobatics. No insult intended to anyone.

It's slow, but fact that there's nothing next to it standing still in the sky gives you less to compare it to. Resulting in it looking even slower vs a car driving 60 past a row of trees close to it, etc.

Lucky for me I was there, and this shows only a small part of the spiral climb out which was amazing to see.

Try 850,000 pounds full. They're about 400,000 empty.
They make 290 tons of lift. Plenty.

it's insane, now imagine it went on aggressive demo. Pulling tighter circles at higher speeds while battling to keep it within the flight envelope.

Would you still be saying it's not aerobatics if they did this as you were just settling down to your Bucks Fizz and peanuts? ;-P

Entertain me, is that jumbo really does flown slower (min speed?) or it just because its so damned big that it looked slow? Pilots anywhere?

aerobatics? I don't think so...however, yanking and banking big airplanes close to the ground have led to bad outcomes in the past....
