Quick tip for everyone. After core aeration run your dethatcher set to its shallowest setting. By going over your lawn after core aeration it will break up all the cores allowing the soil to settle quicker. Then water heavy. You don't want your cores baking rock hard in the sun otherwise it will take weeks or months to break down.

I have used the spiked shoes while mowing my Bermuda lawn and received some unexpected very good results. So. I would not rule it out as an effective way to aerate while push mowing or not.

It's a good practice if you feel like you need it. I've had hard, red clay in both my yards over the years and never aerated. Never thought it necessary or had problems. but everyone's case is different. Thanks for watching.

Maybe I missed it but did you mention anything about how dry the soil should be? I imagine there’s some sweet spot for it to not be too gummy vs hard as concrete. We’ve got dense (near clay to clay) soils in this part of Wisconsin. Great video, helped me pick the tool I’m buying. I should probably get my yard marked for buried utilities. Cable might be shallow.

Good Video. I love my yard butler! haha, I have done my whole yard with it before, but it was only about 800 sq ft. When I was a little kid, my neighbor was a lawn nut, and not the good type (he would do crazy stuff that didn't make any sense.) He would wear those spiked shoes all the time in the yard.

I have a Kentucky blue grass midnight and live in Eastern Montana, winters are - 40s to +40s from November to March summers are 70s to 100s April to October our yard is mostly in the sun with 1 exception of a big shade tree that lawn under it is just as Plush as the sunny areas... My question is when and how many times should I aerate my lawn? Spring, summer, fall?? Or anytime with no worries... Question 2: should a person leave the lawn plugs in the yard and allow mother nature break them down... Or pick them up and fill the holes up with sand????? So many people have their opinion on it.... Does it hurt the lawn if left? Does it benefit the lawns if left? Help!!
Thanks for the questions. How many times you aerate is really dependent on how compacted the soil is. Typically, once a year is plenty. That's what I would recommend. Since you have cool season grass, you want to do it in the spring or fall. Those are the most active growing seasons for KBG. You don't want to do it in the summer as it's too hot and will stress the turf too much. Picking up or leaving the plugs is really a matter of preference for homeowners. If it were me, I'd pick them up. It won't hurt the lawn if you don't, though. Some folks like to leave them to let them break down and add organic material back to the soil. So it does have benefit if left, but you don't have to. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching!
Spike aerators are awesome for going through the cow pastures and busting up the cow patties. If left alone they take forever to break down and will kill what grass was underneath. A few swipes with a spike aerator and they will be busted up and dispersed.
To really get the long term benefits of a spike aerators you must use a weight on the aerator to obtain deeper slices in the lawn. The most important process is over seeding while you are aerating the lawn. I over seeding and aerate the lawn once or twice a month to increase water consumption and speed up germination process.
I need to plant grass in a small area in my horse pasture that has no grass now. Should I till the soil before planting or should I just aerate and plant? Thanks
If there's not grass there, I'd just throw the seed out, keep it watered and see what happens. I keep it simple in the beginning and add layers from there. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and the question!

Hello, I use the spike aerator shoes to aerate my yard. This year it looks the best it ever has.....but..... I’ve had the shoes for 3 years and have used them each year. The first two years I didn’t do much else other than mow my Bermuda at 4+ inches.... Yeah, I know.....😅 Last year, because of a lot of job overtime, I didn’t have time to do anything to my yard but mow it once every couple of weeks. Think about it, 4 inch Bermuda being mowed every couple of weeks. My yard looked a mess. First part of July last year, my schedule freed up quite a bit so I started mowing once a week, still at 4 inches though... I started watching “doc” and “byd” learning about Bermuda grass. Since my yard looked like crap anyway, I scalped it from 4 inches to 2 inches in one cut.... put down heavy fertilizer and watered it in, what did I have to lose.. I immediately saw results, it actually started to thicken up, because I was mowing at 2 inches, but still once a week... Fast forward to this year, I put down pre emergent, aerated with my spike shoes, started mowing at 1 1/2 inches twice a week, and hit it with fertilizers and spoon fed liquid lawn. Wow! it’s thick now, and green as all get out. Do I think it was the spike aeration shoes that made the difference? Heck no, didn’t do anything different than the last couple of years when it came to that part of it. 😀 Btw, I’m in Arkansas too... 👍

I feel ya on that one. Same here. It's not the best at pulling the plugs. I haven't seen anything in the way of harm from it. Of course, I don't use it often. Only to spot treat areas. It's often preferred to aerate then sand. That way you get sand down in the holes. Located where you are, you've probably got bermuda or st. augustine. I use my aerating shoes when I mow my tall fescue lawn right before I spray any liquid or spread any small prill fertilizer. But I wouldn't classify it as "real" aeration.
May try lightly watering before aerating to soften things up a bit. But I have never used a core aerator like that, so it’s only a guess. Wish I had more of a solid answer for ya. Thanks for watching.
My million dollar question. Should I core aerate and right after top dress to level the lawn so sand fills those holes. Or. Top dress, let the lawn grow in great then core aerate after? I just ordered that manual core aerator. But I only have 500sqft

I have a question about bermuda, since I am a bermuda newby. I scalped to 1" HOC in early spring, then bumped up to about 1.25" HOC. My front yard gets the most sun, and it looks great! My back yard get less sun, and I am noticing brown in it. If I look close it is mostly the bermuda stems that are brown and there is little green top growth. So you ever "re-scalp" your bermuda first it just does not have the right growth. I am thinking I should re-scalpe the backyard down to 1" HOC and start again.
I know what ya mean. My back lawn on the sides starts getting more shade from the house and fence as the summer goes on. That's where it starts to brown a bit more first. But I think you're right on your thought process. I did a mid season scalp on the back lawn last summer to reset the HOC. It started to coming in better after that. Of course, it was in pretty bad shape last year, but it started coming along after that scalp. A second scalp on bermuda is often a good move. Give it a shot and let me know how it works out.
I'd pick them up. You don't have to and some people don't, but my preference would be to remove them from the lawn. Thanks for the question and watching.
First place to start is determining whether it's cool season or warm season grass. If you're further south, there's a good chance you've got bermuda or other warm season. You're right..sorta. It COULD have been 2 minutes long. But that doesn't mean it SHOULD have been 2 minutes long. 1. Some people need or prefer more information and discussion while others do not. 2. I would wait at least a year. I NEVER aerate my bermuda lawn. But that's just me. Thanks for watching.

I use my aerating shoes when I mow my tall fescue lawn right before I spray any liquid or spread any small prill fertilizer. But I wouldn't classify it as "real" aeration.

I rented a core aerator and my lawn is so compacted that it was barely pulling plugs and riding on top of my lawn any suggestions ?

My million dollar question. Should I core aerate and right after top dress to level the lawn so sand fills those holes. Or. Top dress, let the lawn grow in great then core aerate after? I just ordered that manual core aerator. But I only have 500sqft
Aerate, then top dress. That’s the preferred order by most.
@@BudgetLawns ok. Wasn't sure if immediately after, filling the holes with sand was basically going backwards so it's not open to get air. I'll plan to get a steppin on the lawn all morning the day I get a yard of sand

I have a question about bermuda, since I am a bermuda newby. I scalped to 1" HOC in early spring, then bumped up to about 1.25" HOC. My front yard gets the most sun, and it looks great! My back yard get less sun, and I am noticing brown in it. If I look close it is mostly the bermuda stems that are brown and there is little green top growth. So you ever "re-scalp" your bermuda first it just does not have the right growth. I am thinking I should re-scalpe the backyard down to 1" HOC and start again.
I know what ya mean. My back lawn on the sides starts getting more shade from the house and fence as the summer goes on. That's where it starts to brown a bit more first. But I think you're right on your thought process. I did a mid season scalp on the back lawn last summer to reset the HOC. It started to coming in better after that. Of course, it was in pretty bad shape last year, but it started coming along after that scalp. A second scalp on bermuda is often a good move. Give it a shot and let me know how it works out.
should you remove the cores after doing core aeration or leave them to decompose on the lawn?
I'd pick them up. You don't have to and some people don't, but my preference would be to remove them from the lawn. Thanks for the question and watching.

First place to start is determining whether it's cool season or warm season grass. If you're further south, there's a good chance you've got bermuda or other warm season. Looks like you don't clean out your handheld aerator.
Yeah, I only will if it absolutely needs it. I'll stick a long screwdriver through it. It doesn't really push the plugs through like it should when in use. It’s still good to have. Spike aeration is perfectly fine. Just don’t do it over and over and over. Mix in a core aeration from time to time. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
