Folks...before you go at me with insults, please understand that I'm trying to share this with you because I know I did it wrong. I'm sharing this to try and keep you or anyone you love from putting themselves in this position. Hear me out......I was in downtown Atlanta with a sock full of cash, no way home, no backup plan, no self defense protection and I had to make the decision....go and take a $700 loss and walk away from a very low mile vehicle and potentially get robbed....yes I had that fear....or suck it up, buy the car and chock it up to a lesson learned....often times the lessons we learn in life come from our biggest mistakes...now hopefully you all can learn from my mistakes. Yep, I bought it....I put myself in a stupid and dangerous position and that forced me to burn myself. Hopefully ya'll can learn from me.....have a plan, always use a bank certified check and don't trust everyone. I would have been ashamed to have someone show up in front of me without having disclosed this horrible paint work and body damages

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer

Totally agree....the issue was this: I'm not home, I'm in downtown Atlanta with a sock full of cash and a person selling a car without disclosing obvious damage. I had no backup plan because I trusted the folks I was buying it from. I spoke with them on the phone, walked around the car with them on facetime and put my faith in them that they were being totally upfront. I showed up and they immediately said..."give him his deposit back"....then I'm stranded in downtown Atlanta with a sock full of cash and no plan to get home. This was foolish on my part and I hope folks can learn from it...I bought it because it was low miles, not because it was pretty....but this paint job is next level horrible! It was my fault, and my decision....now please learn from my stupidity here...I was in a pinch and took the easiest way out.

Josh, I appreciate your honesty here and admitting you made a “stupid” decision. (I’m not sure I totally agree with that statement). There’s an old saying “if it’s too good to be true - it probably is”. The seller was totally dishonest and of course hindsight is 20/20. Like you, I would have been emotionally invested in buying this “pristine” vehicle and probably would have justified the purchase in that split second. Here is what I’ve learned in my years of experience as a former trial attorney and formerly employed at the Federal Trade Commission, Bureau of Consumer protection. In these situations, give yourself 24 hours (yes, you would have had to rent a room at $125-$150 for the night) and see how you feel the next morning. Having the discipline to do this has saved me countless bad deals. I say this not criticize you at all, but to give your 777,000 subscribers some good advice. I’m 66 years old and haven’t practiced law for 20 years, but I’ve learned not to sue people, threaten to sue people, etc. I just suck it up and move one, and I’ve been ripped off many times.

I bought a 2001 Chevy 2500 duramax for 9500 dollars. It had a dent in the door bad interior no problem. Abs lite on no problem the instrument cluster panel not reading no problem what ended up being a problem is I did not get it inspected by a mechanic prior to buying turns out it needed head gaskets replaced along with power steering pump and starter went out. So far I paid almost as much as I bought it for to fix everything and still have more to fix. Now unless it’s a simple truck like the 1967 step side dodge I bought from a nice guy for 1500 dollars or it’s a 1967 bug etc something that is worth it even if motor is bad etc. if they don’t let you get an inspection before buying or won’t wait for one then don’t buy it. So I learned this the hard way. But not sure a mechanic would have seen the paint or bondo that is not part of the inspection I think.

Josh, I’ve gotta agree with several other post here. You saw the hail damage and other issues before you handed over the money. Never comment on much but I think there is something going on in that area. I grabbed a specific Camry from Autotrader at a used stealurshit in TN. Low miles, paid for a full inspection by the local dealership with excellent mechanical condition and a perfect carfax. That dealership took care of a melty dashboard under warranty even. Sweet! Flew down, test drove it all was well except I noticed the spongy brakes. Weather wasnt great but noticed respray on the front bumper. Drove it across the country back to the desert and started in on my B service during covid. Digging in I noticed the full respray and when I found the original paint areas, it looked sun faded. Plastics on the interior also looked faded on one side. Ultimately, after speaking with the used dealership and filing a complaint with my state AG back in 2020, turns out resprays on damaged vehicles from hail and flooding (hurricanes) is not uncommon in the southeast and northwest. Thought I would share, God bless!

Use this as a learning experience, you now have bad options left. Correctly repair the damage to driver quality for about 5K-7K or resell as is about a 5K+ hit. I do car restorations at my home shop since my 2011 retirement and always have 6-12 cars that I am working on and spend more than $50K per car on the restoration. I have one now that I am at $180K and will spend about 35K-50K more to complete on a car that is now 5 years of effort to get to road testing and ready for disassembly for final paint and then interior and should be ready for sale by Apr. 2024. If you ever see a replacement cat, converter on any car that is being sold as a No. 3 car with less than 50, 000 miles and/or has a repaint ( typically a #3 looks like a car with less than 5000 miles for the lay person) run and cancel deal unless you can see actual repair orders. Best of luck in future use an inspector these pre-purchase inspections can be arranged for about $200 for general condition inspection/evaluation. Ray Stormont

It's not Facebook's fault nor would it be Craigslist fault either. People just advertise their stuff on there it's up to a person to tell the truth and not try to deceive or pull something over on the buyer. The seller could have listed that in the description but probably what he was hoping was you would not notice it. Yes he did deceive you but not everybody is honest nowadays and you did have the option not to buy it. I myself have been down that road went to buy vehicles and supposedly a certain shape and when you get there it is not that's when you make up your own decision either cut your losses turn around with trailer in tow and go home or either buy it and chalk it up as an experience. You did have the option of not buying it.

@@elainemarie1473 Yes the guy did tell him that I had a few dings it was not a show car but he should have disclosed that it had been painted all over because then Josh could ask for more photos and made his mind up whether it was worth taking the chance of going there or not. It is not like Josh hopped in his vehicle and drove an hour or two to look at it and then make up his mind he was out hundreds of dollars for a plane ticket and then would have had purchase one for the way back. If the man would have disclosed the information and pictures of the bad body work and the moldings missing and the crappy paint job and the sanded windows and anything else that he knew was wrong with it and if Josh decided to take a chance on it that's all on him. As far as the $2,000 the guy knocked off it's a used car everybody ass more for something and then they come down that's just the rule of thumb that's how people do business and it makes Josh feel like he's getting a hell of a deal. Josh didn't make the final decision and yes it is on him and I understand why he got it he was already in there too far with the money he would have lost by having to go back home. Just using it for a daily driver going 60 mph nobody can see the bad work. Let's face it them damn things are ugly anyway so it didn't hurt the looks of it much.

My advise to others watching this, take heed. Josh did not get in this position by making a single mistake. He got there by making multiple small mistakes. He is doing a good job of showing you where you have opportunities to stop short prior to getting to a place where you are stuck between two bad decisions. Maaco is crap. I had a 1/4 panel and front valance on my mustang replaced and painted. Maaco put the part on my mustang, and baked the whole car, destroying the paint job. It was cracked everywhere. They had sprayed primer on my fog lights, left the tape on it, and they were not even screwed in. I could not prove they did it, I was young, they threatened legal action. Years later, my Dakota needed a paintjob, it was flaking off in hand sized pieces. Different Maaco. They wanted to charge me extra to buff out any hair or dirt that may make its way into the paint, I refused. I told them I did not want a paint over, I wanted it stripped and painted, they said that would take alot of time, I said I figure painting a car takes alot of time. When I got it back, there was hair and dirt in many areas of the paint. Then had not even dropped my tailgate, just took off the shell and did a cheap spray over, you could see the scratches still. I showed them the tailgate, they kept it a few more days to spray over that. They refused to budge on the strip vs paintover, saying show us where your paperwork says strip and paint. I said I told them no paint over, show me where it says you will do that. Again, a stalemate. I will never go to another Maaco.
You knew the car was flawed, they offered to take it back. Out 15k or out 700 to fly back home. You should have walked away, sorry man.

Marketplace and Craigslist never forces anyone to part with their money that's on the buyer. Yes it would be nice if the seller would disclose all the flaws but that doesn't happen in the real world. I would of made the decision ahead of time that if something wasn't right i would of just walked away. I bought a work van out of state a few years ago and flew out and drove it back home but i was prepared to fly back if it didn't work out, took a chance and it has paid for itself many times over. When i got it home i was relieved it made it back with no problems, especially since I've never done something like that before. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I got screwed by Ford in the early 2000’s when they sold me a faulty windshield wiper relay. Because I didn’t book an appointment with them and installed it myself (it’s plug and play) they didn’t let me exchange it for another one. I ended up calling a mechanic friend and they diagnosed the relay as the problem. I then went to an auto wrecker to scavenge a used one and it worked just fine. As a matter of fact it worked for many years after that until I sold the truck. My experience was so frustrating I vowed to never buy a Ford or Ford related vehicle ever again. Over 20 years later, they have yet to see another dime. We’ve purchased many newer vehicles since. Whatever business model they claim to abide by, they have failed on many levels.

The LAST two times I asked a seller specific questions & they lied BOTH times, recently bought a 78 F150 , I asked the seller have you ever had this original Ford bed liner out? & what condition is the bed in? He said there was some pine straw there and a few holes, LOL , I get it home & pull it back and nearly the whole bottom front panel corner is rusted out, the truck had other easy to see rust, & I even looked under it while he had it on his trailer, BUT due to the time, distance & rush I just OVERLOOKED the bed rust out, to be honest I was SO IMPRESSED with the running, driving, of the truck & the original NON hacked wiring I felt good about it, drove it 3 hours back home no issues, and even took $1000 less than what he was asking.

I went to a dealership and bought a nice 2013 Honda Pilot. It has a few minor mechanical issues, but nothing I cannot fix in the driveway. As a Auto Tech since May of '00, all I can say is atleast you can verify the mileage. Pretty much 1 out of 3 vehicles we come across DAILY have large mileage descrepancies. 90% of the major dealers and just about all small used dealers are adjusting mileage. GMs seem to be the easiest, then Ford, Toyota, and Honda. I believe the gauge cluster repair guys in all these areas are the main ones to blame.

FYI, Carfax is not correct all of the time. I purchased my car in 2007 from the showroom. went to trade it in a few weeks ago and the car fax report shows 9 accidents. I know I had two minor bruises. Had the windshield replaced twice once from stone damage and another from freeze thaw hard crack. Carfax shows the the windshield replacement as accidents. I was told that if you went through the insurance company or if someone was given a ticket if they ran into you it is show as an accident even if you did not file an insurance claim. Basically car fax collects every bit of data and classifies it as an accident.

I used to work for a car dealer. A big one I remember a vehicle we bought that was up on the lift and it was obviously in a serious wreck. We saw zip on the car fax and this was a major accident body bondo and all so I hold a lot of water in them. We had big damage and we never reported it. On used cars when we saw things we didn't report it so I think this is mostly the bigger insurance companies.

  • @sn4rl277
    @sn4rl277 5 месяцев назад

On the Carfax, yes it's a few snapshots in time not a full story about a vehicle. If it looks to good to be true it more than likely is. When the person is ready to drop $2k off the price when you find hail damage, well that is my red flag that there is more to this vehicle then I know about. Sorry you got hosed, but sometimes walking away and paying $700 to fly home is worth every penny.
I owned a EX-P and it was a nice little SUV. The K24 Engine in it will last 250k easy when maintained correctly. The only issue I remember was the front suspension had to be replaced under warranty, but I believe it was a recall and Honda covered every penny for me. Great little SUV, I'd keep it and fix the room when you have time or need to.

My low mileage 2011 Mustang had a clean report, I drove the car for a month and the rea tires that were brand new on the lot wore through to the cords on inside of the tires. Hey Josh sorry for your bad experience, thanks for sharing with us. I guess every one of us with wisdom and knowledge got that way by doing quite a few of these screw-ups along the way. I know it sucks because the one that you're listening to the most is yourself kicking your butt. About all you can do is suck it up just make the best out of it. Too many from where I'm at you've got a low Mi vehicle that is from down in an area that is really pristine it's a like new car other than all the beating up of the hail damage. I have a thought for another show. Your wife talked about and you about eating possum and whatnot off the land. I would request that you research into it from your relatives and whomever and maybe go through getting wild rabbit things to look out for and actually making them and eating them and the same for possum, woodchuck, and anything else somebody would have to possibly resort to eating if there was no other food available. People love to believe in the fantasy in their mind that should food go away that all they have to do is run out to their nearest forest and a smorgasbord of deer will be there to feed them. They don't think that those dear will be the first thing that are cleared out dead and gone and then what will you eat if there's no Farmers food available in your store? I think folks out there need to understand and your audience is maybe can share the tales of what their Frugal and hard time great-grandparents used off the land. Around here everyone kills the woodchucks and leaves them in their holes. I have had groundhog when I was young and it tasted like a more mild version of rabbit. It is such a waste to me that most people throw them out and in dire they throw away the heart and the liver which are both the best food out of the whole animal. Our ancestors did not do nasty gross things they did things to survive because they didn't cost a whole lot and they could get them from their surroundings. Matter of fact I would say they probably had better tasting and more wholesome meals on the food they got wild then most of the crap food we get from Big Agra. For for plants you might try to show some plants like lamb squirter and pokeberry and maybe cattails and goes through actually making some and see what you think.. it is a very good thing that you can connect with elders and people around you and get lost knowledge and it would be interesting for me to see and learn from your journey. You can also do a series on what you would use in place of guns because ammunition will become very scarce and it is already and you could look at alternatives. Also ways to purify water and Heat your house with no electricity and gas. Anyway I guess maybe Doomsday prepper Ceres might be interesting even if you have to bring out to people that in a emergency or shortage the government will come to the farmers and take their food to distribute among themselves and of course the people. Just a thought or idea for you
