  • Are you a shopaholic? Here are 15 tips that have helped me maintain balance and healthier shopping habits without feeling restricted. I hope you'll find some of these tips helpful as well!
You work hard for your money and you deserve to treat yourself from time to time, nothing wrong with a little shopping therapy, to relax and de-stress once in awhile... right? Unfortunately, in our society it's easy to get caught up in over-consumption and its very hard to quit doing something you enjoy. So how do you fight the urge to shop?
In 2012, I began changing my shopping habits based on balance not restriction. Since then, I've saved thousands of dollars that would've otherwise been spent on material things, makeup, etc... had I allowed my old habits to continue. With the money that I've saved from not splurging so often, I now invest in life experiences that my husband and I can share together, such as traveling and exploring other countries around the world.
I hope you found this video helpful, thanks for watching!
    xoxo,
    Christine

Two additional tips for the beautyholics that worked for me:
    1. Unsubscribe from mailing lists of beauty websites. They will only make you want more or take advantage of their offers . Once you don't hear about them you are not tempted.
    2. Unsubscribe from most of the beauty channels on youtube and just keep the ones you REALLY love and take actual advice from them rather than huge hauls etc.

totally with you with these tips! I've done exactly that over the last year and I have reduced my make up buying by about 80%😳But I have no regrets. Because of my obsession I came to the point that I realised I have everything and tried to feel happy and content with what I already have😉

Great tips! It's true if you don't know about the sale you won't care! Also lots of RUclips girls return what they buy or get it sent for free so it's not fair on others that will really want it! X

MsEclectic Exactly. Also set some goals, for example if you have 3 black eyeliners use one a time and finish it, then move to the next one instead of using them all simultaneously. This way we can slowly cut down our collection and not feel overwhelmed by all that stuff.

This is why you're my favorite! Living simply. My husband and I have a credit card we were using to get rewards. We realized we were spending way more with that card than our bank card. We paid it off every month but we'd look at the statements and wonder about the purchases. I only use cash when out shopping for myself. I'm a lot more stingy with my money that way lol
Love these videos from you! So refreshing in a YT world of consumerism.

Awesome video Christine...this subject has been weighing on me for so long...especially with regards to makeup. Those of us who publish videos here on yt have created a monster. The makeup/skincare industry has exploded in the past few years. These companies pay "celebrities" huge amounts of money to endorse their products. They pay us a big fat nothing and we can't wait to buy things just to show our subscribers and then our subbies think they have to have the products too and these companies are laughing all the way to the bank. Like you, my channel has slowly been evolving away from hauls and "reviews" and I like it....patti :)

I definitely agree. I have to resist the temptation to buy more products or shop more often because haul videos seem to be the most popular.

Patti- I agree with you 100%. I am 36 years old, and for nearly 20 years I wore and repurchased the same few makeup items that I truly loved. About 2 years ago I looked up a review of a product here on YT, and I now have over 150 makeup products stuffed inside numerous Muji drawers-all of which I was better off without even knowing existed. For years I spent about 10 minutes each day on my makeup, at times I now spend 30 to 40. I blame no one but MYSELF, no one forced me to continue watching the videos, no one forced me to change. I have wasted alot of money as well as countless hours watching videos. I finally said enough, (gave away alot of makeup which has been a relief) and for a few months now I only pop on here to catch up with my very favorites-one if which is Christine because of her genuine personality and willingness to stand out and be beautifully different. I'd rather focus more on my mind and heart, what I can do for others, and less on my outward appearance. Christine-thank you so much for your honesty and transparency. XO, Kara

And I subscribed to Christine after watching her clearout her makeup and it was such an inspiration to me. You're so right. My thing is that I do like collecting makeup to a certain extent, but youtube makes it more tempting. People go and get entire collections of makeup that comes out and then the next and the next. .... I have my fair share for sure (lip products seem to be the easiest to add up) but I just wanna know what the heck do people do with it all? How can you possibly use that much makeup before it's no longer good?

These are excellent tips. There are so many on RUclips that encourage overspending and being wasteful. I wouldn't call myself a shopaholic but I'm amazed at how in the space of a year I've transitioned from watching beauty channels almost exclusively to watching home organizing and de-cluttering videos. Thanks for the video, Christine.

Everything in this video is so dead on! Thanks for sharing these tips. I just watched this after removing a shoe box filled of makeup from my collection and 2 full garbage bags of clothes I do not need in my closet. Love the tip about thinking of displaying your items like a boutique! I've never heard anything like that before but it's so true. You realize what you have and you enjoy it that much more! My husband and I designed our closet as a partially open "wardrobe" and I get so much satisfaction from keeping things minimal, organized, and well-displayed. Same definitely applies to all of my beauty stuff. Please keep these type of videos coming - you do them excellently.

My grandmother told me that when she was young she had three outfits - one in the wash, one in the closet, and one on. This is actually a goal of mine. It might be a little too restrictive, but I'm going to try it. I don't work outside the house, and I find I usually wear the same three things over and over anyway. I sew and have been watching a lot of videos on sewing and altering patterns, and I think I can make three outfits that work together and are of high quality. I can also make them in such a way that they are easier to take in as I lose weight (I hope). I used to have all the problems you describe in this video and found some of the same solutions that you did. I really enjoyed this video!

Love the "don't think room to grow, think room to organize and keep organized, room to breathe and relax, to be clutterfree" and just get what you truly love and will use often. This is sort of what I would describe my minimalism like, so I think miminalism and get inspired for these results, no extremes, just to what suits me :) I just watched one of Kathy Roberts' videos and she said, "for us organizationally challenged people, it helps to think "minimalism"" Before she just thought "dejunking" but it kept being stressful and feeling like clutter and getting out of hand, she balanced herself out by thinking minimalism, and then shifting the thought from just removing junk to removing the excess and what's not really necessary.

Such great advice! I cut my spending under half last year in 2014 by making a budget and planning out what I wanted to buy with a list. And I found that I ended up buying what I really loved and it felt as if I had more to spend, because I planned it out and avoided the impulse things that weren't important. I also agree with using cash too, it makes you spend wiser and you can see how much you have left and it makes you think twice about what you buy and allows you to save more.

  • @taystetherainmo

Christine, I love this video! You are so helpful. A good tip I've learned is when I'm shopping in a store, once I choose the items I want to purchase (whether it's clothes, makeup, purses, etc...) I hold onto them and continue to walk around the store and browse for another 10+ minutes. Then re-evaluate your choices. This seems to be enough time to let the "impulse" part die down, before it actually becomes an "impulse purchase" ... I think the thrill of picking out products and wanting to take them home immediately doesn't last very long. Just wait it out, and then put them back and leave the store.

Your suggestion at 3:26 somehow got to me. As I was browsing the online store again, I keep on thinking which youtuber had said that and turned out - it was YOU. Thanks to you, I had manage to save up some money today. :) You're right. It's always nice to get the item that we want, but it's equally important to savor the purchase as well. What a simple, but great advice. I will always remember this.

Awesome video, thank you! So many useful tips. I've overcome my shopping addiction by doing many of the same things mentioned above for a few years now and by inventorying my items and keeping a budget. I couldn't believe how much stuff I already had. I even wrote a funny poem called "shop your closet" to laugh at all its craziness and to be proud of rediscovering your neglected gems, not worrying about what others think. "The truth is, no one cares how much we spend. Those that do make awful friends." And..."if someone says it's last season, just say u had this sharp vision. Trends no choice to repeat again. You're just several seasons ahead. Just say you're choosing to go green. Upcycling while stashing money." I could go on and on!!!

I agree with you 100%! Much of what you said can be applied to debt and clutter. If RUclips was around when I started my first job at 15, the issues I have faced with both would have been much larger. I was able to tackle the money issue, now I'm working on the "too much stuff" problem. When I was getting out of debt I would ask myself before purchasing something, "do I need this or want it?" Usually I just wanted it, therefore, I wouldn't buy it. After getting out of debt I felt free to shop again, just without charging things. Of course this didn't help the clutter problem one bit! So now, I'm getting rid of stuff I wasted money on. -- Thanks for all your videos, I enjoy watching them. :) T.

    Thanks for the great tips!
    A couple of easy tips:
--One in one out rule--that usually keeps me from getting something I don't love because something I love will have to go
--I calculated my income in dollars-per-hour--when I look at something I calculate how many hours I will have to work to earn that thing (especially helpful if you don't love what you do!!--do I really want to work 5 hours to get ...)
--Also I saw a great idea from the zero waste home where the mom takes almost all of her clothes to the thrift store every season and donates them in exchange for "new" used items, that way her wardrobe changes regularly and she spends a fraction of what most people pay ( that probably only works if you keep a very minimal wardrobe and are an easy to find size)

  • @squishiet

I was definitely a shopaholic before :) A make up and skincare hoarder. Even when i was out of work and down to my last dollars, i told myself i can't shop for now. But if i spotted a good deal i still bought it! It wasn't even about needing or wanting the products anymore. When i found work again, my spending continued until last year when my allergies make me cut out like 80% of my stuff. I still had plenty but it made me realise how all the stuff i loved had very quickly become junk. Since then i have been using up as much stuff as possible and not buying instead :) I do shop now and then but it is very controlled and i always think it out very carefully. When i overspend i feel very guilty! Clutter drives me insane and i love when i'm able to make more 'breathing space'.

I've only filled 23 hangers, this made me realize just what I needed and how much I didn't really need and how much money I waisted having things I didn't need. Loving the minimalist concept and did the same for each area of my home.. Less stuff less stress less thinking about what to wear.. My money more time less cleaning... Less is more!

I went from 6 deep muji drawers and 10 narrow muji drawers down to 5 deep muji drawers in my collection due to decluttering. Same with my closet, I downsized atleast 60% due to videos like yours. In the last few months I went from a 3 bedroom 3 bathroom with a garage to a 2 bedroom with 1 bathroom. Spring cleaning and decluttering. I agree on the space, I am proud to say that I am almost another drawer down on the muji drawers. I look at it and think to myself, "wil I ever use 20 bronzers, or just a few". Thinking like that really helped as well as looking at a upcoming inventory. I like the idea of laminating the inventory and sticking it in the wallet.
I too looked at all of the makeup I had, and how much I spent on it. I have considerably downsized on my spending as well. I use to buy 10-15 things at a time when I went to the store every other day to where I was able to easily fill a alex 9 drawer unit. Then I looked at it and just had severe anxiety of so much makeup. Then throwing in there that I decided to go cruelty free really has helped me to think before I buy and to look at what I have. I am hoping to by the end of this coming year have just one or two drawers of makeup.

Great tips u are an inspiration to me. Im still on my way to simplifying my life . Its so true how many of us including me just consume unecessary things and for me its just soffacating now, its stressful just seeing how much crap I have or like to buy specially if I used to coupon. Now Im slowly getting rid of things just to really enjoy what I love.

Thank you for sharing. I like your point on low shopping instead of no shopping. It reminds me of eating healthy. Going on diets creates splurging, but permanently changing eating habits to be healthier works in the long run :)

Thank you so much for posting this! I definitely have gotten caught up in the online makeup shopping habit to mask some of the loneliness I felt. Once I actually identified what it was that I was "running away from" essentially, my buying spree went down (thankfully!). I still find myself getting caught up from time to time, especially with the holiday season around the corner and those beautiful sets that come out. But your tips were super helpful and I will definitely keep them in mind next time I shop. Thank you again! :)

It's so intersting to watch these older videos and see how much you changed and how much your outlook on life changed. I am in the process of decluttering and downsizing my wardrobe (I just registered for an online clothes sales site) and creating that space you were talking about in the beginning of the video. I love how your living space changed and lightened up and I want to create something like that for my own space. I want to get lighter curtains that flow nicely and let in a lot of light and then I just really need to get rid off things. LOL And that infatuation with things that wears off fast, I know that too. My closet is full of it.

Great tips! Totally agree that it has to be a lifestyle change! I did this for this year. Didn't restrict myself, but cut way down on purchasing makeup. Wasn't perfect the whole way through and could've been better some months, but am nowhere near how much I purchased last year. It's all progress! Great video! Xo, Aileen

This is really right up my alley as I have been a shopaholic for most of my life. Due to health issues I had to stop working yet still shop way too much. I need to follow these rules especially not picking up all the little odds and ends, the impulse urges and save up for something special. That makes a lot of sense.BTW your skin is looking amazing, how about an updated skincare video soon.

LOVED this video Christine. Every tip was excellent. I am writing them down. My weakness are things for the home. I don't like knick knacks but for example when my daughter graduated I had to get pretty much buy an 8x10 of every pose. Pictures/art/sayings/memories are my weakness. I am learning to do a photo book for each vacation or milestone so I have all the photos I love saved and teaching myself I don't have to display them to love them. Now I have to figure out how to be able to say no to family heirlooms. My beloved grandma just passed and we are cleaning out her house this weekend. I want every memory in that precious home but know logically that's not possible. Pray for me!!

    • @PinguPango
      @PinguPango 10 лет назад

      Hi!
      1. try an electronic photo frame - it circulates photos but you only have one frame to worry about instead of having multiple frames cluttering your space.
      2. Heirlooms - get ONE small memory box. Confine yourself to this one space to keep memorabilia. Go though it once in a while and see if there is anything you are OK letting go of. If there is no more room for anything else, don't add anything else. You can also take a photo of the item, instead of physically hanging on to it.
      Hope this helps you!

scrapper900 So sorry for your loss. If you have something such as a quilt, you could it to make a framed piece or part of a scrapbook. Maybe take a picture of it complete, then put a piece of it next to the picture. If there are siblings, you could make multiples and give as gifts to them. If there is fine china, you could have a necklace pendant made out of a piece of the pattern. Not sure how to explain this, but I've seen it done. It seems as though a dish is purposely broken, edges sanded down, and then it gets put into a gold bezel setting. You could give the rest of the set away or sell it online. Sentimental items are so difficult.

I was there too and I did clothes first, which I had my daughter help me, she's in med school but styles for celebs on side. Anyway I gav everything away or donated anything that was 2 seasons out. Now some older things I kept that never go out style. Then makeup...I started watching beauty videos and was buying everything. I've downsized to my favs, save my money for higher end makeup products. I've learned I use less makeup products and don't hav to buy as often. Last was shoes 🙈 I love shoes and was hardest to let go. I still hav a lot shoes and boots but I'm more organized so I can see what I hav and I wear what I hav instead buy more.

As you read the comments, you hit a nerve and good for you!. Wasteful spending (I said it) , leads to a feeling of helplessness (see below from your other subs). Want -vs- need is what you broke into 15 tips so well. Many years ago, our family went on a "low buy" (we didn't have a great phrase for it then!) and have never looked back. Our daughters were taught want -vs- need and we were able to put them both through college, cash; etc....not because we are wealthy, but, ended boredom shopping and became savvy about not just what you bought but who and why you wanted to buy it. Not going to disparage you tubers marketing for the big companies in a way the corporate world couldn't get any other way, just encouraging all of us to be smarter. Anyway, great job.

Great tips! Thanks Christine :) I recently decided to do a project pan because I am running out of room for storing things (specifically my makeup). I consider my collection relatively large for the average person although I do not own nearly as much as others I have seen on YT. With the project pan came the idea to go on a no-buy. After thinking it through I decided it was not a good idea because when I restrict myself of things I want, I tend to want them even more. So my final thought is to not restrict myself from purchases BUT to only buy things I truly need. I have enough lipstick, blush, shadow...etc. to not have to buy makeup for a while but there is always the occasional urge to purchase something just because it's new. This video could not have come at a better time :)

Tip #8 is crucial for me. I'm getting ready to move into a new, smaller house and I want to start it off right - I guess a lot like you did - and not bring all my old stuff to the new place. I prefer smaller spaces and less stuff, but somehow I end up with clutter I think because I find beauty or interest or value in too many things. Also we are so programmed to want more and more when actually less makes us happier. What better time to put into practice Tip #8 though. I'm marking this one to watch again when I forget these things. :)
