Director Mike Flanagan and Kate Siegel on ‘Hush’, ‘Before I Wake’ and ‘Ouija 2’

- Now playing on Netflix is writer-director Mike Flanagan’s (Oculus, Before I Wake) horror film Hush. The film stars Kate Siegel (who also co-wrote the script) as a reclusive writer that’s retreated from society after losing her hearing as a teenager. One night, a masked psychotic killer appears in her window (John Gallagher Jr.), and what follows is a horrifying game of cat and mouse where only one can survive.
While the film takes place in one location, Flanagan has crafted a tense thriller that never slows down and constantly keeps you guessing as to what might happen next. It helps that the characters make real world decisions that feel organic and real to the situation. If you live well made thrillers, I definitely recommend checking it out on Netflix this weekend.
Last week I conducted an extended video interview with Kate Siegel and Mike Flanagan. They talked about their writing process, the way the film got made, how Die Hard influenced Hush, what they’re working on now, why Ouija 2 will be better than the first one, the status of Before I Wake, and so much more.
Kate Siegel, Mike Flanagan:
How Die Hard influenced Hush, and the writing process.
On the gore balance, and the stakes that arise from the character’s deafness.
What’s the movie that Siegel and Flanagan watch on a Friday night?
Who did they show the Hush script to for notes and reactions?
How they developed the second half of the script.
The difference between the first and last cut of the film.
Are there Easter eggs in Hush to tie into other universes or previous films?
What Flanagan can tell people of Before I Wake in light of Relativity’s bankruptcy claim.
On what a pushed back release date really means.
What Siegel and Flanagan are working on now, and their American Horror Story-inspired idea.
On their involvement with Ouija 2, and why it is not the movie you’re expecting.
On the struggles of filmmaking.

What was the suspense?
Piyush Sumera Watch the movie
Weird hearing her voice lol
yeah XD
yep
Film Buff ikr
Film Buff 😂😂😂
Film Buff it is 😂😂
She looks like Angelina Jolie. She's a beauty
Roselyn Gbenoba yes😂
oh my gosh i thought i was the only one who thought that
I thought it was Angelina when I watched the movie until I looked her up!!
Yes, the first I see her. I thought she was Angelina Joli.
@Rosalyn Gbenoba YES!! I think she's one of, if not the most beautiful women in Hollywood. I first saw her in that Stelara commercial, and I had to google search to find out who she was. I don't understand why she's not more in demand in Hollywood.
She is absolutely gorgeous
The most beautiful woman in Hollywood. She's a prettier version of Angelina Jolie. Can't believe she's not in more movies.
They are related her and angelina
@@kristopherstephenson970 no, they are not
Who else is watching this right after the movie ?
Me :-) Best movie i watched in a long time
+Kyle Ibanez Lol I agree, but when she said kill him, I was like gooo xD
Krystle It was absolutely genius xD
Yes i watched it with friends it was great
Me
My god she's so intelligent, articulate and super fucking gorgeous! I have incredible respect for Flanagan he's become one amazing director. So far he hasn't made a bad film.
Movie was great! I was rooting for her character Maddie right the way through!!
As was everyone else aside from psychopaths.
Hahahahahahahaha
Not always. Sometimes actors (or the characters) are so shit that you just want their character to die.
@Lumi it wasn't her fault she couldn't have know that he was there
My Laptop was accidentally on Mute while watching the movie. I thought it was made that way, with the no audio at all. Watched the entire movie with just the subtitles. Got 101 % immersion, as i was Maddie throughout the movie😂😂.
Lol.
nice lolll
Mike Flanagan and Kate Siegel are the reasons I started loving horrors and thrillers. Haven't watched a movie of theirs that I don't love
power couple in the industry
Agreed! Exceeeeeeept... for Absentia. I couldn't even finish watching it unfortunately. But damn, everything else Mike does is gold in every way... from the directing to the twists, to the scares, to the characters, to the thought provoking ideas, to the perfect pacing...
I've watched this movie about a hundred times, it's just so tightly plotted, the premise is just so efficient and realistic, it's fantastic. 10/10 definetly a favourite horror movie of mine.
it's underrated in my opinion
I watched Hush last night and it was 10/10 for me.Even though the film was entirely in the house that's what made it excellent. The agony, the chills of survival and all the excitement.Hope you make more movies like this and kate is an amazing actress.Hope well see you in more movies in the upcoming future! :)
Who else here just to see if she can hear...
Andrew Doherty me lol😂😂😂
Me
Andrew Doherty meee 😂

well yea
When I watched Hush for my first time with my sisters, we thought the sound was broken, so we turned the volume up to like 70%, and when the opening title finally hit, my sisters screamed because it was so loud.
That’s so funny I can’t 😂
I want to see a sequel of this movie but from the killers point of view and explain why he was there in the first place because that was never explained
Corbin Myers a film called maniac with Elijah wood :)
Corbin Myers I just watched this film for the first time and it was a heart pounding flick. Just like you, I wished at the end or during the movie, the motive of this guy would have been explained, it was like some twisted hunting game plot!
That’s exactly what I was thinking
Corbin Myers yes yes Corbin! I agree. Me and Javier was wondering that the whole time
He had a number on his weapon, I guess that was how many lives he's taken and he's just trying to raise that
I'm a little late but I just saw Hush on Netflix and I loved it it was awesome
I loved the movie, the story was very good!
lol its so crazy to see her talk 😂loved the movie. it was SO brilliant
These two are amazing, this is why I enjoy watching bad horrors. They might have details in the film that are actually pretty good 👍💗❤️💗
I ❤️ Mike Flanagan! He is one of Hollywood’s best director to date.
He and James Wan are saving the horror genre.
I was very relieved that they didn't kill her off at the end, cuz she's a freaking badass 👐😜
Excellent! This movie should get an award. Realistic and believable. I loved it. Great job to everyone involved in the making of this movie. I hope to see alot more like it.
I can't believe these two are married 😮
Sunandmagicx Yeah...what a waste lolz 😂

When it is real.. Based on true event.. Could happen in real life.. These.. These kind of movies freaks me and elevates my adrenaline level so high.. I am so addicted on such movies and love them.. Always makes me think i should do more sports so i can fight cz this might happen. LoL
You should watch Tomb Raider and scream 1
I’m a huge fan of Mike Flanagan’s work (especially The Haunting and more rescently the infamous Midnight mass) and I had missed this movie… I watched it this morning and it left me BREATHLESS! I really loved it!
I would love to see a part 2 of this movie
Same idk why but I’ve literally wrote a short script for it I’m obsessed with this film 😭
This interview gave me a lot of insight. With the crushing of the hand, I never really thought too deeply into it, I just thought is was supposed to make the audience cringe and feel empathy for the protagonist, not create a psychological aspect where it's the only mean of communication for a deaf woman
the fact they didnt actually use a real deaf actress (Which would have been amazing) is kinda an insult. they got so many things wrong.
This movie was amazing it was tense and got me on my feet to see what would happens I would recommend this to anyone who likes scary and tense movies
Hush and Gerald's Game, this director is going somewhere.
now the haunting of hill house and bly manor. hes my new favorite
@@kyraparmley3093 & Doctor Sleep & Midnight Mass now
Just saw it on Netflix and it was awesome
Gabriel Garcia Same bro

It's great that there was like only 15 minutes of dialogue and it was yet still quite engaging.
You know how great of an actress you have to be to pull off a role like she did in hush?
Dang it. I'm still in shock though! I just watch it and it was MIND BLOWING. I almost had a heart attack! but damn she also wrote it? I'M SHOOK. Fuck i envy that guy being with her.
This is one of my favorite horror films :)
I didn’t get around to watching it until yesterday, and that was the fastest/slowest hour and a half of my life. It was just so suspenseful and like wow. 10/10 would have nightmares again
came here bc of netflix lol
@heyoitsitzel I love that you came. Did it feel good??
I loved this movie!! I watched it 4 times already!!
GREAT movie i loved it , took on a different perspective and made it into a fun ride loved the lack of dialog it made it very scary and i just loved it!!!!
literally mom and dad
The mask is scarier than Michael Myers'
It's a great movie.
I love Katie Siegel she was utterly fantastic one of the best new horror movies of all time Katie you should have one a Oscar for your performance!!!! I wish I could buy this movie but not for sale please try to get it on dvd to purchase!!!
That's what I call a power duo
This film should be made widely available on DVD instead of being restricted to 'Netflix'. I am not a member of this, but when I enquired through them about the film, they didn't seem to know anything about it!
Her personality irl is the opposite of Theodora's 😂
Excellent film! So suspenseful!
Can't Wait!
Their working schedule sounds like my just-two-weeks-till-exams-schedule.
After seeing the movie, i m a fan of the director and the actor!!
I loved this movie because of her brain and how she talks to herself about the endings
Ouija origin of evil is amazing. Mike is an amazing director
my heart is still beating super fast from the movie
Just watched Hush what a great film, hopefully Flanagan gets to make the Halloween movie
I know right! This movie was directed and written like a John Carpenter film!
+NazcarFanatic24 what happened to her cat ?
its alive
+Jordan The Fanboy
I don't know if you're a Stephen King fan, but his next movie is an adaptation of Gerald's Game. It's going to be on Netflix later this year. I'd love to see him direct the next Halloween. He'd do an amazing job.
How did HE get her?
Ninja Warrior yea im saying hes ugly as hell lol
Most beautiful women, with a great soul doesn't always look for a handsome guy. He's smart, and talented. I guess he's kind to her and sweet. When people mature, looks aren't the most important thing anymore.
@@nanami436 he also advances her career which people seem to look away from, i honestly do believe they do love eachother now though aha
@@nanami436 its also no secret that gf/wife of directors end up in alot of there movies
Saw this movie a while ago and it was amazing. I'm regularly checking on amazon for the DVD release.
i’m watching this movie right now lol because i didn’t know if she was really deaf or not
Hush movie makes my feet cold. So terrifying. I always pause and play while i watching it.
Ossomm movie ever watched, good story and screenplay; direction thankyou for the movie
How did Mike pull that off?
I think he has said the same thing lol
Congratulations, Mike!! Logan Gladden w/Shane, Hope & Kris...
I just got done watching the movie on Netflix good shit
So is Kate NOT Deaf of HoH?
That's super upsetting.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I feel the same way! As an HoH person, I was so excited to see such a popular trending movie. Then when I found out she isn't dead or HoH, I was pretty upset!
why are you guys taking this serious tho?
this film was amazing, it was a really good take on a horror and thriller genre.
Who's here after "Hill House"?
plot twist: SHE TALKS?!!
who did the cinematography (DP) for Hush
I really liked this movie.watched this twice now and planning to watch it again on my days off hahaha.shes a great actress too
Honestly this movie was awsome but it makes me cry too 😞
Wow its incredible this guy got such a beautiful girl like her
okay so correct me if i’m wrong, someone told me that it’s illegal for a hearing person to play a deaf person?
emma fritz no, why would that be a thing?
So do you have to be a killer to play a killer? Duh
Great Movie! Loved it!!
I loved this movie.
I still have a gap in my mind if actually those 2 had any type relationship before (if he knew her)or not
God! This actress is so beautiful. I fell in love! =P
This shit left me wanting more, I was on my toes the entire time, I paused on Netflix bc I was scared about what was going to happen next
Same i was too .
Anyone know what year the Emily movie came out? There's a couple movies with that title and I'm curious as to what one they are speaking of
awesome movie! really enjoyed it!
This was an awesome movie..its recommended!!!
Hush was excellent
She's great actress👍
Does anyone know which camera they shot HUSH on?
i only heard her voice at the part where she was talking about the endings
Guys can you PLEASE tell me what Kate siegel's twitter and instagram is? i've been looking for it but i can't find. TELL ME PLEASE.
when will hush come out to dvd.....
I cried so much when I watched it
im watching hush right now
I came here just to see if she can hear the interview
Omg me too! I didn't even know who she was until I just watched it.
I love the film. .
The storyline...classic horror ...
with a mind bending situations.
not sure if its a "classic" horror
To all of the people commenting that they should have used a deaf actress, I say that's nonsense. Should the actor who played the killer be a killer in real life? Come on, people
She didnt speak for 1.5 hours in the movie but now İ heard her voice and she can speak...
Wow...... they haven’t even mentioned John Gallagher Jr. he was the freaking killer in Hush 😤😠😡
She looks like Angelina Jolie, that's why I like her
Great movie, a must see!
I would LOVE to get drunk at the bar at the Stanley Hotel.
Great job Kate loved it.
Wait do they live in Glendale, California, or Glendale, NY?????!!!
Why was the killer there in the first place ?
The sound is out of sync...
Just finished watching this film.
Honestly what I hate about horror/thriller movies nowadays is, that so many rely on jumpscares which is fucking lazy imo. Thats why I love hush - its more a whole feeling of horror, knowing the main person is deaf which implies a weakness/extra threat in that situation which makes it so exciting to watch and maaaan that queen kicked ass! *Plottwist intensifies* It was nice and satisfying to see the bad guy get killed - many modern movies could actually use more of this authentic feeling! (Which reminds me of my disappointment in "IT chapter 2") Anyways, hush is a great movie I say! Awesome stuff!
