*Rory.* Thanks 😊 Fishbone are ska/punk/funk legends. 🔥 I picked this one for the vibe, the lyrics and guitar at the end. Much of their music leans in this direction. And they are absolute madmen live. Plenty to choose from. I know @Zennofobic will have some ideas, too. 😄
The singer, Angelo Moore, has another thing in common with Bowie. They are both sax players. 🎷 Bowie usually plays tenor and Angelo tends to favor baritone. Live, Angelo plays these kinds of sax: bass, baritone, tenor, alto and sopranino. I've never seen him play soprano but I wouldn't be surprised. Check out "Everyday Sunshine" and "Naztee Man" for examples.
Fishbone have succeeded in building a ska funk that mixes metal, reggae, ragga, groove and funk styles with soul/gospel vocals thanks to Angelo Moore's extraordinary voice... "THE band that bridges the gap between the funk of George Clinton and Rush, a hybrid fusion where Led Zeppelin and Sly Stone dance a frenetic ska... Thank you !!!!
*Rory -* you say you hear a bit of Bowie. I'd say Bowie and Fishbone's Angelo Moore have a comparably slow vibrato (vs a quick one, like Freddie or Eddie Vedder)
I don't hear the Bowie bit BUT Angelo Moore has done many Bowie live tributes these last years, so you're certainly right. Please check out "Cheyenne Star Forever Moore", it's one of the most sincere and heartwarming songs a father wrote to his daughter. Oh, I forgot : check out Raoul Petite (they took their name from a misundersood line from a Zappa song lyrics) : they're the French cousins of Fishbone, and just before you talked about Zappa I was about to recommend you "Mister Z" in reference to the big mustache man : ruclips.net/video/uthPzY_LUpk/видео.html
