In the 80s the West was shocked by images of Ethiopia s starving children and aid poured in from across the world. Now Ethiopia s economy is booming. But once again babies are dying of malnutrition. What went wrong?
In Ethiopia s capital Addis Abbaba the signs of new wealth are everywhere. Glass sky-rise blocks dwarf traditional stone settlements, and with daybreak hundreds of builders arrive at the city s construction sites. But on the outskirts is a very different scene. A long queue is forming here. Word has spread that cheap, government-subsidised food will be sold here. We ask one man if he has trouble feeding himself. Yes , he says, because of the Food Shortage . Just very recently we hit the worst , local woman Valerie Browning tells us. But the Developed World, the Ethiopian government and even many aid agencies want Ethiopia to be a success story. That means the real story often goes untold. At the breadline government security arrives and forces us to leave. This happens every day to news crews in Ethiopia. The government don t want to say that there is another side of the story , explains Former Ethiopian MP Gebru Asrat. The majority of the population do live in dire poverty. And in Ethiopia millions are getting poorer every year .

So, you say they are stupid for having sex and having children, but what would you do to handle the psychological burden of starvation. Lets let you starve for a while and see if your perception changes.

This is heartbreaking, but also a very complex problem. The more we help them, the more babies will be born and the more we will need to feed in the future. I think they should offer men that already have children money to get steralized. Having 7 children you can't afford to feed is just sad.

As I remember, amaranth, millet and quinoa grow under very dry conditions. Also, once certain trees are established, such as avocado, they can survive and at least produce a small amount of fruit without a lot of water. My banana plants here in California, which receive no added water at all, and survive on what winter rains bring, still produce bananas. Such might be the case with plantains also. Food donations are a stop gap measure. Teach people how to farm, and introduce them to different crops so they can feel some independence. My best to the people of Ethiopia
honestly, most of the land that i saw looks fertile enough to grow enough crops. the problem i think is their method of farming. and that is what we want, farming engineers who can teach them how to cultivate self sustained farmlands.
In my travels around the world Ive saw same thing many times. The large charities that receive all the money very rarely get the money directly to the people its meant for. Would be nice if someone on the ground such as Valerie could communicate ways to send money or adopt a family direct. You send a world aide type charity 100 bucks and the family is lucky to get 1 dollar from it. Would be great to know how to give direct.

Unless corruption is dealt with severe and strict strategies those "agencies and local representatives" take the donation for their own benefit.

Wow - I was always wondering about this. I wanted to sponsor a child, I was always concerned they wouldn’t see the money. (That was 30 years ago).
*Africa's people have been starving for as long as I can remember. When I was in the 3rd or 4th grade we had a contest... We went door to door in our neighborhoods to collect pennies to send to Africa to help starving people. The one boy & one girl student that collected the most $ each got a prize. This was in either 1982 or '83 so yeah... This isn't anything new. I've never claimed to be a smart person but it seems to me that in the nearly 4 decades that I've seen Africa receiving foreign aid (& not just from America but many other countries as well) that they could've developed some sustainable way to help themselves & be self sufficient by now. It also seems to me that all these years of seeing their loved ones & neighbors dying from starvation would deter them from having so many children they know will most likely face the same fate. But hey, what do I know?* 🤷

The problem is that the foreign aid puts the local people out of business. Why would I start a farm to grow cotton to spin into clothing, when nobody can make money manufacturing cloth or clothing can be made? Even if they could make clothing, is it comparable to the free stuff that is provided to them that is made in an industrialized chinese factory? Of course not.
The same thing applies to food. Do you want to eat mashed up grains and whatever birds and fish you could catch that you have to pay for? Or do you want to eat free MREs provided by the UN?
And the money that gets sent goes to indoctrination programs to "educate" these people's youth and keep them dependent.

I doubt many of these women wanted so many children. Husband comes home, brought a little bit of food for family then jumps on his wife who better put out or else. There's no contraception there. Her options are limited if none.

Since the ruling party took power in 1989 until they were removed in 2918 the population increased by 72 million.
No one owes them anything. No one needs to help them because you will keep helping them but they will never change their attitude that brought them to the poverty in the first place. Handouts to them is debilitating.

world without vision
Countries like Ethiopia and the Congo have been, giving, leasing, renting very large tracts of lands to foreigners under the guise of developing their agriculture. But what is happening is bribery. Government officials have been assuming ownership of these traditional lands which have always been owned, informally, by distinct ethnic groups. Those in power in Addis Ababa are of different ethnic group from the original owners who find themselves out of power and their lands being stolen. This is the same as if the English government parceled out Irish lands during the time they were colonial masters. They were not English lands to be parceled out and the traditional Irish were told the English were making things efficient so the Irish do not starve.
So why are Government officials doing this in these countries? Mainly greed. They are given unreported bribes from foreigners. They line their own pockets and sell out the traditional owners.
Sooner or later these traditional owners will rebel and the situation will get like Eastern Nigeria where successive Nigerian government sold out the rights of the IBO of E. Nigeria. They have been in constant armed rebellion for nearly 40 years hijacking their oil from pipelines of the big oil companies.
This is not right.
I am in Ethiopia now for three months and I grew up here in Ethiopia region of Gambella , and in Addis Ababa alone, the construction industries are booming and more than thirty thousand construction projects are going now and still most people are still poor and I have been asking many of my friends about the same question and no answer and the Ethiopian government may ask itself how to solve this endless poverty and find solutions through careful planning and most Africa countries 'problems will be solved through Democratic-Socialism and not through greedy system of Capitalism
Any type of socialism where people are not allowed to have private business, employ other people, have freedom of contract, freely associate and participate in free trade will hinder development. This is not a speculation.
Instead of giving people food, you need to teach them how to produce it in an efficient and sustainable way.
Social measures like subsidy and interest-free loans for education and development are not socialism.
It is very important to distinguish between social and socialism. Socialism is a poison for the economy and the mental health of the society.
The question is, why are people suffering when others aren't? Ethiopia is very diverse, many political and tribal divisions. Many internal disputes. Hard for us to understand the manner and conditions others lived under. One would think they should do better. I imagine the weak fade with time.
Americans our very fortunate, for a young nation we've grown quickly. Maybe too quickly. We sometimes think too much of ourselves and not the plight of others. Even with all our advantages, we don't always use them for our betterment, yet we look down on those that lack. It's been my observation that develop nations are usually the ones that take more than give. I guess part of the giving back process is globalization. Maybe that's why there's so much fuss. Takes time I guess. We all want more than we need. Give, if you can spare it. If you have too much, share it. It's easy to criticize, but research for reasons to the question why?

Just as Ethiopia can borrow billions of dollars from the chinese for their infrastructure including railways and roads the government should have the chinese and their knowhow to look into farming and engineering in their rural areas to improve the health and welfare of the people in a urban areas. The development of self sustaining agriculture and farming both for home consumption and export should be designed by the chinese by bringing in equipment and technical expertise and build mordern housing for the people of that region and other region in proximity that suffers the same conditions it doesnt matter what money and food aid thst is sent to assist these families which are being stolen by the red gross and the ngo's instesd of being distributed to the population. Education is key. I understand their culture and religion supports having multiple children but they have to change their mind set and actions. If you cannot feed your children, is it really God's will for you to continue to create children? Yes poor people deserve to have a family as well but if you can barely feed your kids you have the last thing you need to do is create more.
