"Without the kids the tobacco would rot", says Josepha, whose son Shepherd works on her tobacco field. Enticed by promises of high incomes and fertiliser loans, peasants are being encouraged to switch from corn to tobacco. In an ironic twist, the little money made from growing tobacco is being spent on corn. Handling tobacco with bare hands equals to absorbing nicotine from fifty cigarettes a day. "People have no idea of what is going on", says doctor Chimbetete, warning of the risks of green tobacco disease. With tobacco representing 60% of Malawi's exports the authorities are turning a blind eye to the situation, and corporate responsibilities programmes are proving a sham. As one commentator states: "They finance these programs to clear their conscience".

I am 43 years old and I grew up in the mountains of East Tennessee. Until I was around 14 years old my family grew around 15 acres of tobacco every year. It was hard work for sure and the money wasn’t much but it helped us survive. The tobacco was more like a second job as my grandparents and uncles worked full time jobs. I can relate to the folks as many people in the south East United States can.

    6:34 They only earn $200 a year?
I am one of those disgusting people who smoke. I think about quitting everyday, but obviously I'm weak willed and i am wholly addicted. I've looked into the tobacco I smoke, and it says they do not use child labour, but the tobacco industry isn't really known for its honest. I probably spend $200 a month of cigarettes. How much profit are these fat cats making?
A pack of cigarettes in Canada cost between $15-$22 and the farmers make only $200 a year in profit. In the past 3 years I've seen tobacco prices jump from $11-$16, with no explanation of why. The countries tax the tobacco company, and then the tobacco companies hike up the price to make up for the taxes.
The moral of the story is don't smoke, because you're killing yourself and poor families, while making the tobacco companies ridiculously rich.

North America and western Europe is a failing market for tobacco. The focus of the tobacco market is the unregulated, overpopulated third world. The tobacco industry doesn't respect their lives any more than they respected ours here in North America. It doesn't matter to them who the smokers are, as long as tobacco is being sold and consumed. The majority of world smokers live in the third world. This is the last bastion of the tobacco industry.

This video has several bias holes in it, first its holding underdeveloped nations to developed nation standards. But, the developed nations went through the same processes to become developed. Also, for these nations to do better, another nation must absorb the offsetting cost. In America tobacco is taxed heavily, making it considerably expensive region state to state...yet that money gets lost in the system.
