India's Sand Mafia: The Dark Secrets of India's Booming Construction Industry

- India's building boom has spawned an illegal trade in sand. Plundering the environment and even killing those who get in its way, the "sand mafia" has spread its influence throughout India. Subscribe to Journeyman here: www.youtube.com...
Sand is the key to the construction industry, but there is no legal supply to meet the increasing demand. Accordingly, criminal gangs are ravaging riverbeds and beaches. Sumaira Abdulali recounts the damage done to her local beach: "the whole level of sand has dropped by about 10 feet ... They’ve really destroyed it". When she tried to report the perpetrators, she was met with fierce resistance. "They bashed up the car, broke everything. They hit all of us. They broke my teeth." Sumaira now campaigns to expose this black-market trade, which harms many living near sand supplies. Brijmohan Yadav, like many farmers in his region, had his plot devastated by illegal sand mining. However, his complaints were ignored: "the mafia is so influential. They have police and local authorities on their side". Brijmohan began to fight for his land, but ended up fighting for his life. "These people kidnapped me and took me to an isolated place. They beat me up and threatened to kill me if I did not stop all this." Whilst there is an almost blanket ban on unlicensed mining across India, in remote, rural areas it continues unabated.

Thank you Journeyman for getting a report on sand mafia, our media are very busy with yoga, namaz and stone pelting.
5 years on the names you mentioned are still keeping media busy and main issues are overlooked
Its sad that a foreigner journalist is making a report on this issue while Indian media is not concerned. I have personally seens sand mining happening in Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Karnataka and Telangana.
This actually reminds me of that famous dialoge which our politicians use quite often, "desh ki mitti se pyar"
whar does that mean?
Courtesy of Google translate....
"Love the soil of the country"
Hmm
You moron if an Indian person or media made this report he or she would have been in a graveyard
Pradeep poonia came and visit west bengal especially Burdwan and birbhum district
Lol media is a pawn of the state
The funny thing is that most Illegal activities happen like legal stuff in broad daylight in India such is the state of our country.
Nadeem Ahmed so sad 😯
Talk about mexican cocaine cartels
Yeah ,😉
That’s everywhere lol
Judging by the way he said "No mafia" means there is a mafia.
poor man has no where to go.. Even Law..Law is such spider web in which only small animal gets caught.....big animal gets through it with ease...
well said and so true
You would think that all the sand in that region cannot be used for concrete look at Dubai they had to import all that sand to construct that's bizarre
sad indian media cant cover this....
a noteable contribution in this field was done by a Lady IAS officer ( dont remember her name or her living status), who had to suffer a lot for standing up
I hate sand, it's coarse and irritating and gets everywhere.
thats the best random reference i've heard all day
i love bacon but i hate canadian bacon, sad thing is they're both the same.
jltaco85 technically they only come from the same animal, bacon is from pork belly and is cured in a different process, while Canadian bacon is ham that is fried. Same animal completely different parts.
the joys of sand
noo he lives in some shitty inland state
Just watching this for 5 minutes gave me a bunch of solutions for this problem. Most of the sand used in construction is used in big projects undertaken by big construction companies. The government can VERY EASILY ban the use of sand supplied by unapproved sources. Using this can get your license revoked and any unapproved construction by such a company can be stopped. The government can also start seizing all this sand with a specialized armed force. A small investment in this direction will help save the environment and all that.
But the reason why they don't do this is because the government is INVOLVED in the scam. I bet a bunch of politicians run these mafias themselves. India is a dead country.
Thank you for speaking up on this issure JOurneyman Pictures ... The world should know what happens here...
As a first step it would be good to get together with some charities and NGO's to print education material for the 1 million or something sand mining employees of India... In the deserts, far away from the rivers, there are abandoned riverbed where the water has shifted, and geological maps can give better alternatives than the current anarchy... many informations can be provided to the workers to help them, for example legal information about prospecting for legal sand mining land, how to purchase it, licence it, etc, and how to mine deep and safely, digging deep instead of displacing wide surfaces is technically difficult. AFAIK, semi metamorphic rock from particular kinds of mountains can produce the sharp sand that is good for cement, in areas with gneiss and grey/brick colored rock, i dont know for sure, but you can find billions of tons of prospecting to get rich in legal sand mines if you research in geology. I expect there is perhaps a minimum of known sources in India, so it would be a good idea to see what research is being done NOW to find cheaper sources to undercut/equalize with illegal mining.
Technically speaking it's a study of construction aggregate, which is anarchy in India, so an indian who researches science on the geology and worldwide industry of construction aggregate and information solutions can perhaps become wealthy... i.e. reading many documents. www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2212609012000064
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Construction_aggregate
Also, a person who buys and sells old industrial mining and grinding machines from europe and for construction industry can become wealthy perhaps, sorry i dont know for certain.

found from construction aggregate prospecting search on google....
Rivers have to be managed technically with banks to regulate flow speed, and... it's interesting to see that they don't use any dredging machines, which at least dont take water from the banks. They use pickets and stuff to change the flooding nature of the river, it's also very technical, it can help stop erosion. river erosion studies also should be in full power by the state.

There are larger issues involved than simply blaming the "sand-mafia" Would any of these judges, activists, reporters tell us how do they expect roads, buildings, houses to be built without sand? India has been made a mess by courts legislating without expertise and legislature being lethargic.
Australian development was shaped by it's building sand supply locations. Quarry Industries control it and are vast. However, the most expensive part of such sand is transport. With technology closer supplies that are cheaper to transport can be washed, graded and mixed. What India lacks is this technology. Since concrete is the basis of development it would pay for more people to be trained in quarrying and concrete batch management
Why should any country look to Australia for development? That "technology" you speak of can find in Japan or Germany.
Who are we (developed countries) to pass judgment on developing countries? Of course, it would be nice if India was able to enforce its environmental laws, but in a country where civil servants are grossly underpaid, is it surprising that bribery is commonplace? In a country where most of the rural population lives below the poverty level, is it fair to expect them to do whatever they can to feed their families?
These are problems that must be solved by the Indian people. Solutions cannot be forced on them by the west unless they request our assistance.
gee weez a Mafia from sand, ONLY in INDIA.
EARTH lol
probably in Russia and other former USSR countries as well.
There is a trash mafia in Mexico
^And Italy

it's heartbreaking to see my motherland getting robbed of her treasures..

Ganji, river is good for you, it has healing powers 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
He tried the Jedi mind trick on her " you are mistaken there is no sand mining going on here" lmao....as thirty dump trucks go by
I guess what I do not understand is, eventually won't that have an impact on erosion in our oceans? Haven't I been seeing oceans practically drying up and moving? This must have an impact on our ecology...i go to the impossible channel and James talks about this.
This docu was made really well. I only wish they would have blurred the faces of those who were speaking out. Although something tells me they wanted to have a face to their voice.
Unfortunately, the high chloride levels of this sand from beaches and estuaries will manifest itself as structural weakness in the years to come. The concrete will damage the reo embedded in it, and buildings/infrastructure will fail under load.
They may wash it first
Throw some aluminum in there for good measure ! Haha
Building codes and safety aren't very advanced in India
Amazing journalism. Thank you so much. Australian TV doing worthy journalism than any of Indian Media....
Sand Mafia got that politician on the payroll
Sonic Crash
Yes just like America
Sand mafia IS IN POLITICS!!!
WHERE R U BRO
16:44 Damn that official wears a lot of gold...where did he get all that money from lol???
That's why no mafia
Dont worrie we banned straws here in Seattle, we saved the planet!
I can now see why civil services in India have lost it's charm...Nice work by Journeyman Pictures, felt nice to feel the true spirit of journalism in this era ...
What a unique subject, bravo to who ever suggested doing a piece on this. Ive been itching to visit India for years, this video has me even more excited to make it happen.
My family owns 4 mines but all of them are legal. We have legal licence as well as legal tender for the sites.
But still these sites were highly dangerous .
We have carry out armed men all the time day and night for protection but still we sometime lose our labours in
armed clashes with mafia's.
Thank you for reposting this in your Channel. It's not pleasant to know that capable and wealthy men do this to poor individuals for a chicken in a pot of rice. Anybody who thinks that's okay is a criminal themselves.
It is easy to get mad with the sand miner, the challenge is coming out with a better solution. Most of the building material volume come from sand/rock. Where do you get them in a big scale with India’s building boom? Sand mining is dangerous, do you have a better job offer for them? Or can you think of a better system that can be implemented?
Mafia in mumbai? when was that a new thing lol.
desisongs4155 always!
The reporter looks about as green as it gets. 'News' for the sheltered
Irony of India is that, we call ourselves 'Socialist', but the most powerful people are politicians and bureaucrats.
I think, we were better off under capitalism/libertarianism, so that the small businesses could make money, given the high taxes and regulations, licenses.
"this woman was beaten to inches of her life and this man tortured for three days, we're gonna get get out and continue our pursuit of these miners on foot"
wow! that was an eye-opener! However the guys who are involved in the illegal mining are at the bottom rung of the ladder above them are the authorities and the developers. The developers have the politicians and judiciary in their pockets so NOTHING but NOTHING will be done to stop this. Obviously steel is too expensive to build with. A few little earth tremors and many of those buildings will come toppling down like card houses. Building inspectors (if there are any) will have been paid off too to pass sub-standard construction. But, what goes round, comes round - In India there is Karma.
"Hey man you got the good stuff"
"Yeah, I got this from a ToysRus sand box"
"How much do I own you?"
I feel for Akash and his family. It will take lifetime in India to solve this case. Good luck to Akash for this brave pursuit.
At the heart of any of these illegal issues that are over looked and condoned by the very officials or the the police in charge to stop it is the fact that the mafia pays better than their own employer. Give those in charge to stop it better pay and you will see a change.
brave brave woman, all strength to her
16:35 Yeah, I'm pretty sure that district magistrate is involved with the sand mining business
'Pretty hard' to stop one illegal operation when the entire country runs on bribes from anything like an overdue drivers license to drugs, on up to the building and medical industries.
In countries where there is a whole lot of poor people who has not many choices of making a living this is what happens. The greed of the rich, victimizing of the poor and the destruction of the environment.
Let's looks at who is responsible for the most pollution, dumbass. Sand is a fucken non issue
This is what we called real journalism, half of Indian don't even aware of it...
This whole drama started aftet Supreme Court of India banned sand mining. You cant ban something when there is huge demand for it, jn a way it actually created a parallel system to get sand which provided kick backs to local level authorities and made more tough to buy house for poor.
mining happens all over the world, but there are laws & environmental regulations that should be followed. Illegal mining isn't the same a mining after an environmental analysis & with proper procedure to limit the damage to the area.
There are alternatives and parallel systems i.e Manufactured Sand. This is much efficient and cheaper than natural sand.
Well the court has to uphold the law. It's the politicians who should find a solution.
If demand is not met they should find new legal mines to open. If they don't do that there is not enough sand or price is driven up so much that illegal mining becomes a lucrative option if they can even pay bribes with what they make. At the same time fines should be high enough to make illegal mining not worth it.
They need a healthy environmental approach that is will regulated to benefit the industrial growth and minimal damage to the environment.
how is manufactured sand made?
This is very dangerous. Such labourers don't joke with their wages. That is, if they buy something in the market, the change must be accurate, else they would kill, since their job is so risky.
They did not cover Tamilnadu's sand mafia
It's very difficult to get this under control. When you have bribery and corruption added to an already big problem the situation becomes a down hill battle
It would be easy to get rid of these mafias if people had balls. That's why they stay out of everyones' way.
Your English is wrong mr ball
Your English is wrong mr ball
In india, the ppl that are expected to save the system are biggest threat to it.😞😔
I was innocent for a long time, believing in law

"think you're aware of ALL Injustices"
lmao do you study them?
How big does it have to be for you to be notified? Someone stole money out of my car a month back too.
This is silly. What else are they going to build with? As a westerner, even I can see the hypocrisy of this journalist.
It's a tough situation, yet ultimately in India, China and much of Asia the situation is mis-managed. There is nothing wrong with development, but this unhinged growth is clearly very unhealthy. The governments can use their absolute power to encourage modesty and anti-materialism to the people, and focus on providing basic needs, but instead the ideas these people have are to grow as quick as possible, become rich and buy all the coolest things to somehow prove something to the world. I went to China hoping to find a more genuine life but instead encountered a crass commercialism on a scale I couldn't imagine in my home country, which has a reputation worldwide for this sort of mentality. It's really too sad. We live in an age of abundance and general world peace, yet many developing countries are abandoning their principles and pursuing riches. Perhaps I give them too much credit, maybe they had no principles to begin with and this western idea of development was an outlet for them to put their constructive and destructive energies. I sometimes got that feeling in China.
Avidi Arshid well I'm a white Aussie male I'm not conspiring to hinder their development.
MicroSamgg I know what you mean and think you make good points but I just can't see how a rich westerner who has at least indirectly benefited from environmental plunder is justified in condemning Indians building modern homes for themselves
A I understand my own hypocrisy in this reasoning, but the situation is still fucked. These buildings may be new but are of extremely low quality, and the reinforced concrete highrises in India seem to be on the same level as in China. They will be gleaming jewels to make good face at the beginning and then rundown and without routine maintenance within 5 years' time. I myself am not necessarily rich but I have been fortunate be educated and can see this is a disastrous recipe. In fact, I for now have chosen a technically lower standard of living in order to put forward my best foot as to what people believe they should expect from life. These countries can do better, much better, and they can look at places like Japan, South Korea and Malaysia (Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong included) as examples of how to properly scale a society. Western countries are not the only paradigm here.
I understand this...was/is the same for China. Sometimes I feel it is purely a cultural problem, no matter the solution, these people cannot seem to get it together. However the prevailing logic under these market economy systems says 'well, things are definitely a hell of a lot better than they used to be' so we'll keep doing it this way, even if the methods are terribly inefficient.
Investigative journalism is the best journalism it takes a lot of courage
Sand over Sand really....Never herd of such a thing over sand the most abundant material in the world...God Bless The poor people of the world......

You covered a small tip of ice Burg , there are many such uncountable incidents in India.
Sure is sad the length these people will go through to make a buck.
What’s next, air?
The whole country is a landfill, the once beautiful rivers are now streams full of sewage and trash.
These people wanna build these fancies cities, but can’t even keep their streets clean 😂
Pretty damn sad...
Pickle Bacon indeed. Check out the river in java. Fuckin nasty.
You do know that the streets were filthy in places like the US and UK during the 19th and 20th century, when they were actually going through a construction boom? Same is happening today, sure its pretty late, but its got to happen at some point right?
With all that corruption i can only imagine the quality of the cement. One earthquake and ....
safety rope? the one in their hands attached to the bucket
im not for environmental destruction like this but it' funny how people only start to care when they are peronally affected, in this case her property being devalued because the beach she doesnt own is being mined away.
All industrialized country have gone through this and other similar practices.
fitofight that's right America went through something similar back in the late 1800s and 1900s India is going through the same phase but heightened because of the overpopulation.
America went through this when there was nothing better anywhere else. Now the world has advanced and India has the internet created by America which shows them better options. It is evil have this knowledge in 2017 and still act keep your country behind. And how long did USA go through that. India and Africa have been going through this for ages, while for USA it was just a stage. And simultaneously when USA was going through this there were revolutions and scientific inventions taking place there as well. And Why did India and Africa not go through this love ago at the same time as USA. I am African, but I ask, are we not all humans who started evolving at the same time? Why are the whites so advanced?
America is among the most corrupt countries in the world. I live here, don't believe the propaganda you here on the news. There is many issues here just like everywhere else. Also whites are not more advanced than anyone else.
All industrialized countries should jump off the Golden Gate Bridge for destroying the planet in order to generate profits. Milton Friedman used to say that if you put government in control of the Sahara Desert there would be a shortage of sand within 5 years. Currency should be boycotted immediately.
Joe Marks3
Been thinking, what do companies do with the excess profits they target each year?
This is barely an issue in the larger outlook of developing the economy. India should create a legal channel for land owners to sell their sand.
For journeyman pictures, India will always remain a "dark secret".
Manas Surya no more like a dark work place heeh
Except all journeyman pictures is a yt channel that reposts other media outlet's videos. This for example is a part of an ABC Australia news report.
david bryan I always wondered the same thing. Not sure how it why they get away with it but whatever. The only thing that bums me out is that they rarely ever post the entire episode. Only a clip. Worthless imo. Btw ABC Australia has these up for free on their site.
david bryan I'm still trying to figure that out tbh. Just go on ABC Australia website. You'll see the complete version of many of their episodes.
david bryan she litteraly presents herself as such to every public figure she meets in the documentary series.

District Magistrate guy is wearing an Emporio Armani spectacle frame. Kind of suggests there is collusion because on his salary this would be a wee bit dear.
I don't know how you know those frames or even noticed, but nice discovery
Maybe he got it from Bangkok, made in China.

No mafia. *reassures with indian head nod*
salt in concrete is very bad !! you can not use beach sand to make concrete1111
They wash the sand over and over to remove the salt
At 17:05 epic words spoken by collector 😁😁
Unacceptable and sad
in my province, when we were young the river is very beautiful...many fishes. We used to take a bath there...But now as illegal sand mining is going on, it looks like crap.
For viewers information Journey man pictures is a Christian organisation.
Sometimes making things illegal sends what should be an honest business underground where it exists in the shadows, unregulated, where prices increase stimulating scarcity even more. All people use sand it is one of the most common natural materials on earth and isn't in short supply unless someone wants it to be that way. In the USA we dredge sand out of a hole and make a productive lake, no big deal.
Example:
Costa Rica allows sea turtle eggs to be sold supplying the small market from certain beaches which are overcrowded by the turtles who destroy each other's nests. Other countries nearby ban the use of the eggs driving the price up so much it encourages them to be taken even worse to where few nests survive and the turtles become nearly extinct.

Owais Ahmed Khan which filthy country you are from lol
....thats why nobody takes you people seriously .... its like terrorists calling other terrorist ...ha ha ha
Owais Ahmed Khan bhai Pakistani hai kya??
You have to be very cereful when you call an informal organization an organized crime organization. Organized crime is closer to big coorpotations than to shanty towns. Obvioisly it is illegal for few people to collect sand in an informal way, but laws are made against the weak, you will never have a law criminalizing big extractivist coorporations that generate major ecoloical and socioeconomic threats.
rajasthan#bjp government is involve in sand mafia at chambal and banas river in rajasthan ...shame#modi
mumbai has congress in your dreams ...its bjp shiv sena ..government
Vicky Kaul ahahahahahah
Vicky Kaul fucking katua loser.
I don't like the Mafia one bit, but the reason they are taking the sand seems worth it. India is over populated and need better cities. Im happy to see them working hard. Once these cities are built it should free up alot of property around India. Its like the freeways in America, alot of small farmers were forced to sell their property around America for the Greater good. It was well worth it but Im sure pissed off alot of people.
biggest democracy, thought it only happens in China
yeah I think you and India have both fucked things up pretty awfully. Little room for banter between you two, especially where the environment is concerned.

I don't think ive been so interested in sand before. When she says at the end the sand is running out..Sand = mind = explode
"illegal Sand mining" ... sounds like a non-issue to me ..... NEXT!
This time its like "Ya we all agree we are part of a scam and we are silent on it.". Solving bigger problems looks like a necessity
Is that river made of chocolate milk?
