    I thought it was just my camera, an RTSII, that had a hair trigger shutter release. At first it was a pest, but it quickly became an advantage for me because I have shakes in my hands, and the sensitive shutter release and the heavy weight of the camera, helps me to get sharp pictures. I keep my finger well above the release button until I’m ready to fire, and when the time comes, there’s no tension to cause movement blur. A heavy camera like the Contax RTSII really helps me to keep the camera steady. Using digital (Nikon D7100) has meant I’ve neglected it, but I’m going to renew the light seals in the RTSII and start using it for Black and White photography. The Carl Zeiss 50mm f1.7 lens is superbly sharp. My wife surprised me one day about 20 years ago when she saw it at a market stall, and the guy was selling it to get some funds to buy a leica. She doesn’t know much about cameras but heard me talking about the Contax. I only had a Zenit11at the time.The Contax had the f1.7 lens and instruction manual with it. I was so chuffed she got such a really good bargain for £200 in very good condition. She sighed with relief when I said it was fantastic, after she took the chance on something she knew little about. I really enjoyed taking it with us to Rome that year.

    I put my old Yashica FX-2 in for repair/cleaning yesterday. My parents gave it to me in 1976. A lot of fond memories learning photography with it. I'll be shooting with it this summer. It has a needle meter instead of the lights. Otherwise, pretty much the same camera.

    Great video, thank you for sharing. I own the distagon 28mm for a couple of years now and used it on my fuji XT-1. I love that lens and i really want to use it on a 35mm film camera. I had a pretty hard time choosing between the RTS and the FX-3...Your video helped out alot and i ended up buying the FX-3.

    My first camera I ever purchased was the Yashica FX-3 (pre-super), I learned how to take photos with that camera. A couple of years later I upgraded to a Contax 159mm and have been shooting with that on and off since 1985. I always lusted after the RTS cameras but I put my money in the lenses instead of the pro bodies. At one time I had 6 Zeiss lenses, I still own the 28 f2.8 and the 85 f1.4 and both are amazing lenses. I recently pulled the 159mm and the 28 2.8 out of retirement (from my dry cabinet) and have started shooting film again for my street and travel (Portra 400). Can't wait to see the results of the Portra 400. Nice to see a lot of renewed Contax/Zeiss passion recently. Thanks for the videos...

    How did I miss this one Kyle?!?! My stepdad bought me a Yashica FX3 Super 2000 in the mid '90's with a Tokina zoom lens. I still have it now, bought and sold multiple lenses & it currently sits with a ML28, ML50/1.9 & ML135. I still occasionally take it out with me & the past year or two I've started using it for star trails whilst shooting digital night skies, milky way etc Which for me makes it the better of the two as I can remove the batteries to turn off the viewfinder LED's to eliminate light leaks & also I can hold the shutter open for hours at a time with a lockable remote cable. Infinity is also at the hard stop! Of course the latter is more luck than choice of purchase but it works well. Any other purchases will be into MF but then I loose the all important weight advantages.......

    Just a quick note that during this video you mentioned that shouldn't that the yoshika FX3 super 2000 does not have mirror lock up however however it actually does it is automatically it is automatically controlled when you use the the shutter timer that that then activates mirror lock up.
    Thank you so much for all the work that you do and I also love your photos and your your RUclips video style.

    I bought my Contax 137 MA brand new in 1983 because a friend of mine whose parents owned the largest photography store in Phoenix, AZ showed what a great system this was.. He told me that the lenses were as good as anything that Leica had for a lot less money. I bought the 50mm and the 35mm Zeiss lenses because my son would be born in about 3 months. I've always been in love with the magical images of all kinds I was able to get for all three of my kids with this camera and these awesome lenses. The body died after a trip to Alaska but the lenses are in great condition, so I'm now hunting for a new body. You can't go wrong with either of these bodies and the Zeiss glass.The company that owned Contax was Kyocera.

    I think I’ve watched this exact video like 10 times? Never gets old. Also, you mentioned the super sensitive shutter release issue- there was actually a (quite rare) version in which Contax built in a metal ring which helps shield the shutter button from accidentally being pressed. I’ve found it to completely eliminate accidental exposures. It was designed for the scientific / medical field because blank frames meant trouble in the lab, haha. It also locked the shutter dial at 1/60 AND auto instead of just at auto, because most medical work used flash all the time. Maybe I should send you mine for a test drive to see if that shutter button makes the difference for you!

    How are you feeling about the FX-3 a year on from making this video?
    Little known fact: Yashica’s own ML range of lenses were made by Tomioka, the lens manufacturer responsible for Zeiss’ own Made-in-Japan lens variants. They’re seriously under-appreciated, especially for a kit that can be had for the cost of a Pentax K1000.

    I've been using Contax-Yashica lenses on my Canon 5D2 and Somy A7R2 for quite a while with adapters, so decided to pick up a Contax RTS II Quartz since I already had Contax lenses...you're correct about squeezing off a few frames by accident when using the camera's meter...I've done it too. If I'm using the in-camera meter, I just don't advance the film until I've metered and ready to shoot. No more wasted frames.

      Thanks! Glad you're digging the vids. As for a lens for the FX-3, I don't do much street photography, but the 35 2.8, and 50 1.7 are both good buys produce very nice results. The 50 1.7 would obviously be better for portraits. Enjoy!

      Kyle McDougall my first camera was the Yashica FX-3 Super 2000. The S2B is like a Rolls Royce version of the FX-3. If someone had to nit pick: it would be nice to have a finger grip like the FX-3 and there is a tiny tuning fork sound to the shutter. With that said it is by far my favorite CONTAX.

    Contax 137 MD is also good, it's lighter than the RTS and the built in motodrive is extremely useful. The camera runs on AA batteries, so you don't need to find expensive and highly toxic mercury batteries or anything. The only problem is, the faux leather coating tends to peel off, but you can fix that by removing the whole coating and replacing it with real leather. I did that and now the camera looks like it's always been clad in black leather. The whole project cost me about 2€.

    Hi Kyle! I had a Nikon F3 for years but recently it got a little problem. The button for exposure lock fell off. Well, that's very unfortunate, since I use that function a lot and really love my F3. But I guess that is a good enough excuse for me to sell my F3 kit and get a RTS II. So that's what I did. Still waiting for it to be shipped from Japan. I already own two Contax Zeiss lenses, a 50/1.7 and a 28/2.8, originally bought to go with my 5D2. I wish I had got the 28/2 "Hollywood" and the 50/1.4 instead of my two cheap ones in the first place, but I was (and I still am) on a budget. Hopefully I'll enjoy using RTS II. :D
    Btw, I really like your videos. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to future Contax lens reviews!

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  6 лет назад

      Hey Jimmy, that's awesome! I'm sure you're going to love the RTS II, and it sounds like you already have two great lenses to use with it. The nice thing about the Contax system is that even the "cheaper" lenses, like the 50 1.7 are still really great performers. That 28 2.8 is a nice one as well! Thanks for watching!

    • @yichiyang8451
      @yichiyang8451 6 лет назад

      I shot my first roll this morning, and I'll send it to the lab tomorrow. I agree with you on the quality of Zeiss optics.
      So far I have some mixed feeling about RTS II. The design is pretty cool and I like how it looks. I really love the "RTS shutter". The key travel is so short that it is really to hard shake the camera when pressing the shutter, so it's basically a shutter release but in a button form. I also got a TLA-30 TTL flash, which is dope.The build quality is OK. I guess is it more of a precision tool than a tank (a Nikon F3 is both), and I wouldn't crack walnut with it. My biggest complain is ergonomics. It is really bad. I may have been spoiled by my F3, but RTS' button layout is terrible (this my personal opinion, so take it with a pinch of salt). I mean, why on earth would someone what to press DOF preview button placed in that corner? Don't even get me started on exposure lock level (it will make a lot more sense if they make exposure lock and metering share one button, half press to meter and full press to lock). Did I mention the eye cup? You cannot open the back with the eye cup on! Typical silly design (which is probably an afterthought).
      My RTS II comes with a matte focusing screen with grid (type FS-6) instead of default microprism screen (I'm really curious why they chose microprism as the default on RTS II instead of a split image + microprism combo). I wished I had a split image screen (FS-2/3 or 4), but matte screen is not as bad as I thought. In fact, I really enjoy the fact that I'm not limited to the center anymore when it comes to focusing. On a negative note, I'm less confident when using a matte screen, because It's not really possible to be certain that the focus is spot on. I guess I'll have to wait for the film to be developed and see if matte screen is actually accurate enough.
      I'm just being nitpicking, so don't think that I dislike my RTS II. I love it as much as I loved my F3. They are good in different ways. Hopefully this comment is not too long and boring. :D

    Well presented video, thanks! I thought the FX3 Super 2000 had mirror lock up with self timer, but I may be wrong. However my Ricoh KR5 Super ii does have that and it's pretty much the same Cosina made body as far as I know.
    I still have a Contax 139Q in working condition too, thinking of the FX3 Super 2000 as a second CY body. I've found some decent Yashica ML lenses for the Contax for not much money, would still like to find an affordable Zeiss lens, maybe a 35 2.8 Distagon?

    One other problem with the RTS - they are invariably sold without the lens. And Zeiss lenses are often priced well above the RTS body. Divorce papers should be required before an owner permanently separates lens from body.

    Hi Kyle, whileas i do really like my RTS way much, even the older Yashica Bodies, i must admit, i dislike the FX-3 Super 2000 for its way cheapskate build quality, but otherwise, it's way small, light, and i must admit - very fool proof, just the absolute needed basics, 3 LEDs for the Exposure, no Exposure Dial, but one just loads the Film, sets the Film Speed, and begin with composing the Picture, and adjusts the Aperture on the Lens, and adjusting the Shutterspeed, so that the green LED lights up, and finally, hitting the Shutter, and off ya go... ;-) It's quite simplicity, but works well. And i love Contax Zeiss Lenses, and also the Yashica ML Series, which are no slouch, shooting both since Decades. You've said it all before, and these are also my concern, i do miss the Aperture being superimposed into the OVF, also i do miss the actual shutter speed, must look onto the Shutterspeed Dial. Besides that, the FX-3 Super 2k does get the Job done.

      Hey Mar, agreed, the FX3 Super 2000 is a great cam. Definitely a bit 'cheap' feeling, but it get's the job done, and stays out of the way.

      @@KyleMcDougall Exactly for that reason, i do own it, Kyle. ;) When i need something more in terms of haptics, built quality, i do switch to my Contax RTS, or -RX.

    Have you used a Praktica with a Carl Zeiss (Jena) lens? I think they're great, I've a BC-1 and a BX20 and several CZJ lenses. Fantastic results with Kodak Ektar film.

  • @nukecoke87

    Awesome video! How would you describe the shutter sound of the FX-3? Is there any dampening mechanism built into the FX-3? I've owned some other SLR models made by Cosina (like the Olympus OM-2000), which are really noisy with zero dampening. Not really a deal break but it makes the cameras feel cheap.

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  6 лет назад +1

      I'm not sure about a dampening mechanism built in. As for the sound, it's not the nicest. It sounds a bit cheap, but it's never bothered me.

      I have a FX3 2000. It’s built the same as the OM2000, and looks as though it might share a few plastic parts.
      Fun cameras to use, but have an unrefined, budget feel to them. I like them because they have a point & shoot quality to them.

    Which contax portrait lens do you recommend to use wit yashica FX-3 Super 2000?

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  3 года назад

      Really depends on which focal length you prefer. The 85mm 1.4 is great. A bit dreamy wide open, but nice and sharp at f2. The 50 1.4 is great if you prefer that focal length, but the 50 1.7 is probably the best value.

    • @angelisone
      @angelisone 2 года назад

      Go all out with 85/1.4, 100/2.0 & 135/2.0 & wide 15/3.5
      So don't be surprised that they may end costing more than your car.

    Hi Kyle,
    After watching your video I bought a Contax RTS II and separately a Carl Zeiss Distagon 2.8 / 28mm lens. Without lens the film body works fine and the lens seems in good condition but together it does't work : the aperture indications in the viewfinder are wrong and after taking the picture and recock the camera the mirror seems blocked until the lens is removed. I'm not able to find out if the issue is on the camera ou from the lens. With your experience, you maybee know where the problem might coming from or where I can find an answer.

      That happened to my camera also. It‘s the famous mirror slip. The glue of the mirror is a bit weak in these cameras. With a hairdryer you can warm up the mirror and slip the mirror back to normal position into the housing. Better solution is to detach the mirror and reglue it with a stronger glue. Good luck!

      Hey there, sorry but I don't have any experience with the Ricoh, so I can't really help you there. You can always go with the Yashica FX3, and then use Yashica lenses. They're cheaper than the Zeiss and still good.

    Hi. I just bought the camera. It seems the aperture blades cannot close once i open it (using the aperture ring). I don’t know is it the aperture ring issue or the blades issue. If i wanna close the blades i have to remove the lens and push the lever manually. Can you please help me on how to fix this? I have been trying to find a tutorial on this but can’t find any.

    Do you like Canon 35mm S.L.R.s? Well I had the Canon AT1 match needle. They made two cameras: the AE1 which is automatic, and the one I had AT1. Why not the auto camera you may wonder? Because you really can't do anything with the camera......you set the shutter speed, put it to your eye, focus, then take the picture. BUT techniclly and artisticly you can do things with the AT1. And I'm not just taking a picture, I'm making a photograph.
    If I'm photographing someone indoors, and they're' sitting on a sofa with a window behind them, on the tech side, the light from the window will cause the subject to be underexposed.
    So I can take a meter reading from the subject with the camera, set the camera, bring the camera back up to the composition I want, then take the picture. I can take a meter reading off the palm of my hand, set the camera.....i can do all types of things.
