In the past decade, the Mazda CX-5 has played a crucial role for Mazda globally. As the first Mazda vehicle featuring Kodo Design and SkyActiv technology, it has achieved significant success. However, with this success comes many questions about the next generation of the Mazda CX-5, especially since the current second generation is now six years old. Recently, there have been clearer indications regarding the next-gen Mazda CX-5.
Many assumed the Mazda CX-5 would be replaced by the similarly named Mazda CX-50. However, despite the name similarities, the Mazda CX-5 and CX-50 have different approaches, ensuring the CX-5’s continued existence. According to information from Drive, the new generation of the Mazda CX-5 is expected to arrive in 2025 with several crucial changes. The most notable change will be the introduction of a hybrid engine, setting it apart from the current generation.
Mazda has already begun its electrification journey with the introduction of models like the Mazda MX-30 EV, Mazda CX-30 PHEV, and Mazda CX-60 PHEV, as well as other models with mild hybrid EV (MHEV) technology. However, Mazda currently does not have a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) option in its electrified lineup. This presents an opportunity for Mazda to develop HEV technology for the CX-5, considering their existing PHEV models. Additionally, there is potential to leverage technology from Toyota, Mazda’s partner and fellow Japanese automaker, renowned for its expertise in HEV technology. Thus, the third-generation Mazda CX-5 might use Toyota’s HEV technology.
Looking at the collaboration history between Toyota and Mazda, Toyota owns a 5% stake in Mazda, and the two companies have previously collaborated on the Mazda3 Hybrid using Toyota's hybrid technology, although it was only available in the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) and discontinued in later generations. Mazda Australia’s Marketing Director, Alastair Doak, confirmed that there will be a next generation of the Mazda CX-5, stating, “Senior management has confirmed that there will be a next generation of the Mazda CX-5. This car is the best-selling model globally, so it makes sense.” This news aligns with Mazda’s plan to introduce 3 BEV, 5 PHEV, and 5 HEV models by 2025.
