For extra filtered incoming air I use a 4in ducting and I hook it up to an older style car air filter that I can put the 4 in ducting on and then clamp it down and doing so everything is filtered and not restricted as much as you might think I can't think of the year but the filter I used came off a GMC envoy but it would also fit a Chevy trailblazer think like 2006 somewhere around there if you choose to try this remember k&n filters can be cleaned out and reused just don't oil the filter it's worth looking into does work very good on the side vents of your tents if you can find a way to attach them to the tent they are very good at keeping pollen and all kinds of other microscopic stuff out

If you had 4 lights how would you vent the air. Would make another hole for the extra 2 hoods or just add t-connectors to filter lights all through the same hole?
How do you cool your lung room ? And where does your hot air from your lamps and your outgoing air get exhausted to ? I’m trying to set up a 9’ x 11’ 4 light (non air cooled light) 2 led and 2 hid garden and I’d be using your same fan setup but I don’t know if my ac for my house would be able to cool the garden with 2 1000 w lights and leds I know make heat as well. My ac unit is a 5 ton and I have 3600 sq ft it’s cooling so I’m not sure if adding that extra load to it would be a good idea and if I’d just be heating up my house and overworking my ac. Maybe I need to buy a 2 ton mini split ac unit and just do a closed garden with a co2 burner as I have a propane lines going to a generator I could tap into and just use the fans at night to circulate air when the light s go off ? What are yours or anyone else’s thoughts on my dilemma?
Can I use something similar as a purifier for my room to remove dust? I am not sure if to put the extractor fan inwards to the carbon filter? Much appreciate your advice.

Everest I have a 5by4by7feet high room that I built . I already purchased a 8inch exhaust with an 8 inch phresh filter. I want make this room sealed with a couple tnb co2 bottles, but am gonna need a fan for humidity and heat exhaust.my question is I use my 8 inch fan and filter as my main room scrubber outside my growing room do I need an intake into my grow room because I have an exhaust for the heat and humidity. And will the tnb canisters provide enough co2. I'm using led and am gonna need a heater in the room to get my temperature good as well.
You can build cheap intake filters with a box and 3m filtrate furnace filters.
Would merv 5 can intake filter be good enough for the intake to prevent bugs and podery mildew spores?

One question though, I understand I should run my carbon filter/fan (exhaust) 24/7 in my flower room.. and my intake filter/fan for the lights only when the lights are on.. but what about the actual intake? Do you run that on a timer or 24/7 aswell?? Thanks in advance!
John Doe Great question! Air exchange is important both in the day and the night when growing in regular, ventilated grow rooms. At night, temperatures tend to fall and relative humidity increases, so it's really important to keep a little air exchange going so that it doesn't get too moist in your room-this is particularly important if you are growing flowering crops that are prone to mold and mildew. So, yes 24/7 all the way! Many fan speed controllers have daytime and nighttime settings precisely for this reason.

Hey! Do you need filters both inside the tent and on the end of your extraction or just inside the tent? Not sure if there needs to be something on the end of my duct that extracts my stinky air into my attic.

Shouldn’t the Inside fan be connected to grow lights, pushing hot air out and filtering the room . While the outside fan is pulling/pushing fresh cool air in ?

Hey mate, I was wondering if it would be a viable option to use a filter/fan and to box it up externally from the grow room with ducting leading from the tops of both rooms and having the filter/fan as an intake in that room with ducting from the bottoms of both rooms so that the air cycles from the draw created by the filter/fan intake being externally housed with the ducting.
I hope that makes sense.
Yes, keep in mind a lot of extra power since it be will harder for the fan to suck air through the pipes

I have a 27' x 26' x 13' tall bloom room in Colorado that I have to come up with an air filtration system to get my permit to build. I am in the middle of town and no smell can leave the building. I am planning to use 3 can 150 filters with 3 10" max fans what is your thoughts. HELP PLEASE
Michael Reyes Hi Michael. Thanks for your question. I see you subbed the channel so, of course, I'm more than happy to help! ;-)
First, let's look at the stats you provided:
Your room is 9,126 cubic feet. So you need to be exchanging at least 9,126 CFMs.
CAN 10" Max Fans are rated at 1,023 CFMs but with a CAN 150 filter's pressure loss, that's 907 CFMs.
So 3 x CAN 10" Max Fans + CAN 150 filters will give you 3 x 907 = 2,721 CFMs.
This set up is inadequate, especially for a bloom room full of mature plants where shortfalls (in this case 6,405 CFMs) in air exchange really show themselves.
I assume no additional cooling or supplemental carbon dioxide. I also know Colorado can get pretty hot in the summer months too. So you are filling the entire space available? If so we absolutely need to get up to that minimum of 9,126 CFMs.
It looks like CAN have discontinued some of their larger filters but check with your local retailer or online:
This set-up will move 9744 CFMs, allowing for 20% pressure drop from the carbon filters.
5 x CAN MAX FAN 16" 2436 CFM fans (Note: they run on 240 volts)
5 x PHRESH FILTER 14" x 48" (max CFMS 2500)
5 x 16 >> 14 inch duct reducers
With your reducers, ducting and clamps, you're not looking at much change from $9,000 for this equipment although you may well be able to negotiate a discount I'm sure. I've got a hydro store search page here - just scroll down past the article: goo.gl/Tp5yoJ

Hey Everest. thanks for the great info. quick question, does my inline fan always have to be higher CFM then my filter max CFM rating? For example, I'm looking at the Hurricane 8" inline fan rated 745 CFM and I want to use a 8" x 16" Phresh intake filter rated at 750 CFM, Will the 750 CFM filter work or do I need to get the 8" x 12" Phresh intake filter rated at 450 CFM? 750 down to 450 CFM seems like a lot to lose. But if my inline fan is rated at 745 what is best to do. What do you suggest?

Hi Curt-you'll be fine with the 745 CFM fan and the 750 CFM carbon filter. Your filter's CFMs should be more than the fan.
I just decided to get duct reducers for my cool tube, I chose my option to go with the 4" ventech fan with two mufflers and insulated ducting(don't want to keep the baby awake), what do you think of that set up?

The cool tube is 6", i checked every site i came across with for a 4". I chose the ipower cooltube to match my ipower ballast and bulbs. I plan on having a closed loop system to see how that goes. I'll do a grow tent set up update video once all of my stuff comes in.

Is a outtake the same thing as a intake but u just pushing the air in instead of taking it out . Or is there special intake fans .
Same inline fans used for intake and outtake - it refers to bring fresh air in and exhausting old air out of the grow room respectively. It’s just how you orientate the fan to direct the airflow according to your needs.

I am doing the exact same thing for my 8x4 grow tent...Carbon filter inside and outside 2!!!That way you are 100% sur you air is pure coming in and out!!!And there will be 0 smell!

Not really if you use aluminium ventialtion because aluminium ventilations ducts contaminate the air which pass through the ducts so if you dont want to smoke aluminium weed dont use aluminium ducts !

Yes you can! Just factor in a 20 - 25% drop in airflow in.
quick question I have lights on rail light movers, do you have any advice on how to set up a ventilation setup to cool the moving lights?? I have been trying to engineer this thing for weeks. Don't want the air flow tubing to mess up anything like touching my plants, rocking the lights as they move back and forth. Any advice on that? Thanks
That's a tricky one my friend. I had a colleague trying to do something like this in his loft-space (where temperatures were a little high) - to be honest, air-cooled hoods, ducting, and a light mover is a recipe for problems. You have to leave so much slack in the ducting to accommodate for the movement that you inevitably generate a whole lot of air resistance too. I'd choose open fixtures instead.

Open fixtures are those without a glass panel or duct ports-Google Image Search "Adjust-a-Wing" for a (good) example. You could consider fitting an Ice Box ( goo.gl/X7iDAc ) to your exit duct on your air cooled hood to chill the outgoing air but you would still need to leave sufficient slack for your water lines + invest in a chiller, seal your room, and add supplementary CO2. Air cooled reflectors have a 'deep' throw meaning they send a penetrating 'beam me up Scotty' footprint down towards the canopy-as such it would be good if they could be moved back and forth on a light rail but the logistics, practicalities and potential for problems of such a set-up make me shudder. :)

Thanks for your comment. I know the intake filters look very similar in appearance to carbon filters but they are actually different. Intake filters do not remove odors - they are just for particulates. They still need replacing every 9 months or so but they are a lot cheaper than carbon filters. HEPA are fine, but need quite a lot of maintenance, plus they start to drag your ventilation system down. Specialist intake filters are quite difficult to find for grow rooms but it's worth it.

Everest Fernandez sweet, it seams to me that you would have better temp control with hid and a vented hood as you can direct the heat straight out. I'll be keeping an eye out for when you try out some LEDs tho (damn their pricey).

I sense that you are not in agreement that air intake filters are an important part of ventilated indoor gardens, Bob.
You set up your hood cooling wrong. You cooled the first light and maybe second light then you managed to increase the temp around all 4 other lights more and more at every light down the line.
Thanks for sharing your insights. Air-cooled lights are somewhat of a misnomer; we are simply removing heat via convection and ventilation. The air in a grow room, even after briefly passing near several lamps, won’t be anything near the surface temperature of an HID lamp’s outer-casing so the net effect will always be reduction of heat rather than an increase in temperature. While I appreciate where you’re coming from with this, our goal isn’t actually to cool the lamp as this will reduce output and alter spectral distribution. When you just think about it in terms of removing hot air, I think it makes a lot more sense. Anyway, always open to making improvements, although I’ve since gone pretty much all LED. :)
