I rarely want to change my setup, I need to feel 100% in tune with the board so it’s one less thing in the way of my skating. A deck will last me 2 years and then I switch it out for another the same or as close as possible. I keep a stock of spares so I don’t have a supply problem when I need one, same goes for trucks and wheels, I’ve been in my current trucks and wheels for about 4 years now . When I am switching decks, I am switching to an identical deck (shape, size, brand) and when I switch shoes, I always go for the Maranas (same model, size). If not it would mess me up, mentally! 😁 That being said, I am very rarely comfortable, skating! 😅 It's always a mystery 2 me when people land fs boardslides - it's soo scary! Well done!
It is funny that you mention shoes, because that is probably one the next videos. I have skated the same shoe 99% of the time for 4 plus years. However, I have tried many for a day or two. FS board slide and nose slide is all about standing up straight with good posture. My posture is the number one thing I think about. Thanks for checking out the video. I agree with what you said finding one shape or size that works would help any skater with their progression. I do understand that different shape boards can be fun but for progressing in my personal I’m stuck with size 8. I have dabbled with bigger sizes recently. I tried out 8.5 and size 9 size nine was actually crazy Had to flick way harder for a slower flip which was interesting but what I noticed was, I definitely could land on it because it was a big board going back to my board. I felt the most comfortable though also Tim is such a gnarly skater his kick flip crook, on Hollywood high is legendary

44, gone through lots of Krooked and Anti Hero 8.5’s and 8.38’s, Baker 8.5’s and 8.475’s all fun starting to feel flat though - tre’s are almost back, learnt switch slappy crooks last week. Set up a WKND 8.5 x 31.875, wheelbase is tight - 14” - just to keep whipping around 360 flips, a bit steeper than the Bakers for a change, good skate last night
Awesome, for sure if it isn't right change it up. However for us out there without the bag O Tricks I think we need to hold what we got and learn consistency in our basics. You sound like you have some rad Tricks so you probably understand how the board differences will affect it more. Stay Rad
I'm a size 12 shoe and about 190lbs. Dude, I've gone from 8.5 couple years ago to 9.25 Chocolate Couch shape (for 2 days, couldn't do it), Settled on 8.75 for my "bigger/stable" board and an 8.25 for my usual go-to cause it's easier to flip and lighter. BUT... then I started feeling like it was too small but I didn't wanna go 8.5 again yet so I got 8.375 haha. I'm on that now, but haven't had a session yet. Just a few ollies and 180s. We'll see! Crazy you use that angle measure that's next level. I love tinkering around... it's part of the fun. I have a feeling I'll end up back on an 8.5 next and maybe might settle there. We'll see! I was laughing when reading this because it felt it was part good times trying new things and part frustration trying new things. We are about the same size, now that I have trimmed down 😂. I think I will settle at 8.5 as well but mostly for convenience. I like the 8.75 shapes but everyone does it a bit differently. 8.5 popsicle are easier to manage as long as I watch that pop angle. The measurement helps me not have to figure out the pop on boards. It seems to work. CA Cali or Canada? I lived in San Diego until after highschool. I have been back twice in the last 28 years. Sticking to the same style/brand of board is a big thing but it is nice to try something new from time to time. I try and stick to the same few brands for the most part. Loved the noseslide to heelflip line you got. It looked so good. I also think this is the first time I have seen you do the fakie heel. I'm sure you have put it out in a video before now I must of just missed it.
It is the first time I stuck to one shape. It really helped me. Fakie heel is a weird one for me. Sometimes I have it and sometimes I absolutely don't. The best one is in the double chocolate video from 2 years ago. It was up a big bank. Skating some other boards now. Always getting into something. Stay Rad Sir.

I always skate a santa cruz 8.5 with steep concave with some indies and reds. I play around with wheels between 56 and 54 depending on what im doing. Goated setup imo.
I think I'm the opposite, I could really do with experimenting more with different board shapes and sizes. Been riding 8" exclusively since I reluctantly moved on from 7.75" about 20 years too late 😂 Stoked to see you land that noseslide shuv out!
There is the first part of finding what you are comfortable on. The second part is the hard part, and that is sticking to it. I would recommend trying friends boards and see what you like so you don't go down the spendy rabbit hole. It's fun but spendy.
Nice video, although for myself I found that i get too comfortable after a while on the same setup and start being too dependent on tricks feeling the same. I now have two setups and alternate between them in my sessions, always making sure I can do all my tricks on both. Any 8 inch deck with venture lo's, their default bushings on tight and 52mm dragon wheels and a 10inch erick winkowski with indy 159 on loose with 56mm ricta coulds and riser pads. When I can do a trick on both of these then I really "know" the trick. So to each their own haha
I also mind my catches more on the winkowski deck because these boards cost 100€+ while no one likes 8inch and I get them on sale for 30 all the time lol

Cool video. So I've had the madness this past year & it's not all my fault. We got a vert ramp almost a year ago & after riding it a little I decided to put together a vert setup. Ive been an 8.5 devotee for about a decade so I thought I'd step up to 8.75 but the board that felt the best under my feet was a 9 popsicle. I got used to it pretty quickly & loved it on the vert ramp & almost immediatelymy 8.5 felt too small. Weird. When I'd ride the 9 on other stuff it felt good but a little cumbersome. I dont want to bring a quiver when I skate so i thought id go ahead & try an 8.75. Felt ok but a little small still. Back on the 9. Now im on a slightly shaped 9 & it work pretty well. Need to give it some more time but ive been looking at the exact 9 that started it all. Recently to make matters worse i put together a 10.75 Skeleton Key pig. I thought it would be fun & novel. Turns out it's a blast & I've been skating hard on it. Not just curbs & stuff. All in all through the madness I've been skating a lot more & that's Rad. Ill be 50 soon so ill take it.

It is fun. But for progression I learned I need to stick with one setup in street to dial things in. Then I can switch it up. you get to the age where you need to prioritize consistency because you've run out of time to try new & different shit, which only compounds when you're an adult with disposable income. i'm burning through 2 decks right now that were the last step in sorting out my preferred shape & wheelbase, and then it's back to the normal setup for good; madness hasn't gotten to me too much since i've started skating again because this era actually has setups i skate comfortably for my large frame & shoe size, unlike in the 90s when setups were really small and i couldn't even get trucks or a board in the sizes i skate now
I just started skating 6 years of Saturdays ago. We are just getting started 😂. Hopefully 🙏. You are correct though. There is a smaller window on learning Street tricks. However we can skate the bowl and hit the curbs forever. 🙏💯
I literally forget how to skate when I change setups. Going from surf trucks to regular trucks felt like I was trying to ride a 2x4 bolted to the ground. Damn thing just wouldn't turn. 🤪Fortunately, I only get the bug to experiment and change setups once every few years, so I'm happy with Carver C7s and going to stick with them for a while.
I have tried to like my carver CX. I like the Yow and the Waterborne so much more. I have been trying the carvers on other boards and wheels trying to find the right setup. Surfskate definitely takes some experimentation to find the right setup. There is a lot of fun trying new things but I think the progress comes from sticking to what you are comfortable on and going from there. Stay Rad D.
@@AdventuresInSkateboarding The only problem I had with switching to Carver was deciding if I wanted a C7 or a CX. Without any way of being able to test them I just had to pick one and hope for the best. So far, I’m very satisfied with what I chose, but I’d still love to try out a CX.
For your standard trucks you have, I highly recommend the Waterborne adapter with the gun system. Turns any board into a great Surfskate for about $80. Hard to beat.
That's where I am at right now. One main setup and a few side project boards. I really need to do a video on all my completes that are ready to skate 😂.

Hey Anthony, I totally agree with sticking to the same board for a while. I feel this is especially relevant for us older guys. I went through some madness a few years ago but have settled on a shape from crailtap (Girl and Chocolate). The wheelbase is what I am really looking at. P.S. I couldn't click on your video quick enough. Love what you are doing and hearing your thoughts on skateboards and watching your progression.
Appreciate you Sir. At the end of the day it just makes sense to stay with the same board or very very similar boards. For me, it comes down to discipline and not chasing the idea of the next board. Having a kids hobby with Adult money is a real issue 😂. What I do is get 3 of what I am riding at a time. Then I know they are at home waiting. Then if I walk in a shop and a board gets my attention it really has to grab me to get me to pull the trigger. It is an addiction.
You are definitely really good at sticking to one shape board and wheels truck combo. It really just makes sense. The RUclips part of it, for me, is that people don't really watch for the skating 😂. The board setup videos get way more interaction. Not sure what to do with that data but it definitely slowed down my videos. Kind of not hyped on editing unless there is really something new to share. Appreciate you always supporting my adventure.
@AdventuresInSkateboarding oh same for everyone. That's why so many skatetubers make product videos every other video. It's what the algorithm likes. If I just skate, I'll get 600ish views. If I make a product video, they 4x that easy. I see so many skate youtubers turn down the product testing path far too often. Haha.
i could see it helping progression maybe, but it kinda sounds a bit boring too. i have a bunch of different setups, i usually have one or two favorites, but i tend to bring them all and cycle through them. i used to mail order boards, so i'd know the length/width but that's it. you just get used to riding different setups, i think it helps you be a bit more flexible. i lost more progress to injuries over the years than changing boards. some boards are better for different things. if you don't try different stuff, how would you know what works best?
For sure you need a starting point with a proper setup you are comfortable with. Then sticking with it for a while in order to build consistency progression. Did you watch the video? I speak on it from how switching boards disrupted my personal progression and how once I stuck with on board the progression picked up. Then I skated a 8.5 to see how the progress transferred and then a crazy Alltimers board. Having the right tool for the job is also important. I have different boards for bowl, slappy, downhill, freestyle plus lots of 80s and 70s boards. Currently trying an Opera board that is similar in shape to my AIN board, but with different trucks and wheels. The whole idea was to stick with one board in the progression phase and stop chasing boards. Maybe I didn't communicate that as clearly as I would have like to. @@AdventuresInSkateboarding i watched it. and i don't disagree that sticking with a setup helps progression, i just don't know that it's worth it for me. variety is the spice of life, so they say. i often get secondhand completes from fb marketplace, so i get to try different gear that i might not pick out for myself otherwise. i know i don't like small/skinny wheels.

That's the start of it. We have to find the one we are happy with and then we can stick to it and get the consistency and progress. What are you looking for in a shaped deck? I have tried a lot, maybe I can recommend one to you.
I like the ACE bushings better. They tend to adapt to my style of skating in both bowl and street. ACE is closer designed to an older Indy than a current Indy is, hanger and kingpin angle. Have you tried them?
@@AdventuresInSkateboarding I have not, I currently have some Thunder hollow Lights on the way, also have the 100a dura bushings coming too. I haven't skated since I was a kid, trying to get back in shape. (Age 48)
@@sideoutside awesome I started on thunders. I started at 41 with just skate fast every experience from the 80s, no tricks outside of an Ollie. Only thing about thunders is the widen the wheelbase. Good for stability but bad for nose slides. The hanger will most likely cause the wheels to hit the ledge on the way up and make locking the truck in harder. But do able. And they are great for grinds. Stay Rad and keep me updated.

Good advice that I need to heed. I skated a Dogtown deck that just seemed to work for me, I need to go back to that one for year so I can progress.

Defenitly, i took my quicked a while when i changed from 7,75 to 8. it does sound much but when you are stick to one size it takes some times to get the feeing back.

you get to the age where you need to prioritize consistency because you've run out of time to try new & different shit, which only compounds when you're an adult with disposable income. i'm burning through 2 decks right now that were the last step in sorting out my preferred shape & wheelbase, and then it's back to the normal setup for good; madness hasn't gotten to me too much since i've started skating again because this era actually has setups i skate comfortably for my large frame & shoe size, unlike in the 90s when setups were really small and i couldn't even get trucks or a board in the sizes i skate now
I just started skating 6 years of Saturdays ago. We are just getting started 😂. Hopefully 🙏.
You are correct though. There is a smaller window on learning Street tricks. However we can skate the bowl and hit the curbs forever. 🙏💯

I literally forget how to skate when I change setups. Going from surf trucks to regular trucks felt like I was trying to ride a 2x4 bolted to the ground. Damn thing just wouldn't turn. 🤪Fortunately, I only get the bug to experiment and change setups once every few years, so I'm happy with Carver C7s and going to stick with them for a while.
I have tried to like my carver CX. I like the Yow and the Waterborne so much more. I have been trying the carvers on other boards and wheels trying to find the right setup. Surfskate definitely takes some experimentation to find the right setup.
There is a lot of fun trying new things but I think the progress comes from sticking to what you are comfortable on and going from there. Stay Rad D.
@@AdventuresInSkateboarding The only problem I had with switching to Carver was deciding if I wanted a C7 or a CX. Without any way of being able to test them I just had to pick one and hope for the best. So far, I’m very satisfied with what I chose, but I’d still love to try out a CX.
For your standard trucks you have, I highly recommend the Waterborne adapter with the gun system. Turns any board into a great Surfskate for about $80. Hard to beat.
I keep my main set up , but i do have other set ups that i play around with. Never know when something really works well with me.
That's where I am at right now. One main setup and a few side project boards.
I really need to do a video on all my completes that are ready to skate 😂.

Hey Anthony, I totally agree with sticking to the same board for a while. I feel this is especially relevant for us older guys. I went through some madness a few years ago but have settled on a shape from crailtap (Girl and Chocolate). The wheelbase is what I am really looking at.
P.S. I couldn't click on your video quick enough. Love what you are doing and hearing your thoughts on skateboards and watching your progression.

At the end of the day it just makes sense to stay with the same board or very very similar boards. For me, it comes down to discipline and not chasing the idea of the next board.
I still have an inventory of different boards to run through, but I have found my go to. Stay Rad Sir.

It is hard to not go get the new new. However, it definitely is worth the results to stick with what you know.

It's good to keep with one set up for sure, but when I go to the skate shop I'm like a kid in a toy shop... I don't want a toy that I already have!!!😂
Having a kids hobby with Adult money is a real issue 😂. What I do is get 3 of what I am riding at a time. Then I know they are at home waiting. Then if I walk in a shop and a board gets my attention it really has to grab me to get me to pull the trigger.
It is an addiction.

I've been on the same set up now for close to a year, and it's definitely helped me. Consistency increased as well as confidence. Great video.
You are definitely really good at sticking to one shape board and wheels truck combo. It really just makes sense.
The RUclips part of it, for me, is that people don't really watch for the skating 😂. The board setup videos get way more interaction. Not sure what to do with that data but it definitely slowed down my videos. Kind of not hyped on editing unless there is really something new to share.

@AdventuresInSkateboarding oh same for everyone. That's why so many skatetubers make product videos every other video. It's what the algorithm likes. If I just skate, I'll get 600ish views. If I make a product video, they 4x that easy. I see so many skate youtubers turn down the product testing path far too often. Haha.

i could see it helping progression maybe, but it kinda sounds a bit boring too. i have a bunch of different setups, i usually have one or two favorites, but i tend to bring them all and cycle through them. i used to mail order boards, so i'd know the length/width but that's it. you just get used to riding different setups, i think it helps you be a bit more flexible. i lost more progress to injuries over the years than changing boards. some boards are better for different things. if you don't try different stuff, how would you know what works best?
For sure you need a starting point with a proper setup you are comfortable with. Then sticking with it for a while in order to build consistency progression.
Did you watch the video? I speak on it from how switching boards disrupted my personal progression and how once I stuck with on board the progression picked up.
Then I skated a 8.5 to see how the progress transferred and then a crazy Alltimers board.
Having the right tool for the job is also important. I have different boards for bowl, slappy, downhill, freestyle plus lots of 80s and 70s boards.
Currently trying an Opera board that is similar in shape to my AIN board, but with different trucks and wheels.
The whole idea was to stick with one board in the progression phase and stop chasing boards.
Maybe I didn't communicate that as clearly as I would have like to.

@@AdventuresInSkateboarding i watched it. and i don't disagree that sticking with a setup helps progression, i just don't know that it's worth it for me. variety is the spice of life, so they say. i often get secondhand completes from fb marketplace, so i get to try different gear that i might not pick out for myself otherwise. i know i don't like small/skinny wheels.

You have to be on the lookout. Sometimes World Market sometimes a local Tap house, and sometimes a long drive to a good store.

That's the start of it. We have to find the one we are happy with and then we can stick to it and get the consistency and progress.
What are you looking for in a shaped deck? I have tried a lot, maybe I can recommend one to you.

Can I ask why you switched to Ace over Indy's?
I like the ACE bushings better. They tend to adapt to my style of skating in both bowl and street. ACE is closer designed to an older Indy than a current Indy is, hanger and kingpin angle. Have you tried them?
@@AdventuresInSkateboarding I have not, I currently have some Thunder hollow Lights on the way, also have the 100a dura bushings coming too. I haven't skated since I was a kid, trying to get back in shape. (Age 48)
@@sideoutside awesome I started on thunders. I started at 41 with just skate fast every experience from the 80s, no tricks outside of an Ollie.
Only thing about thunders is the widen the wheelbase. Good for stability but bad for nose slides. The hanger will most likely cause the wheels to hit the ledge on the way up and make locking the truck in harder. But do able. And they are great for grinds.
