    In the game I’m in the party discovered how Nautaloids were made while on a Mindflayer diskworld tomb. The discovered that they were in part constructed by using a modified version of ceromorphisis on psionic space fairing creatures capable of spelljamming that are apparently extinct now. The party found a stasis chamber with a defective Nautaloid that my Wizard telepathically communicated with. She wanted to be free and to see the stars again so we freed her and she gave us a ride home to Toril and is our spelljammer when she’s not roaming. We named her Cthylla and are planning to search for more of her kind (pre-ceromorphisis)

    The new additions to the Nautiloid definitely make the ship appear more fearsome. Used to be, you feared the Elven Armada. But now, it seems like Nautiloids are the ship to beat.

    I really hope we’ll see a Nautiloid miniature someday. Either the beautiful classic design or the cool new version. Either a huge ship like the recent sailing ship or on a different scale in a series of Spelljammer miniatures. Whether a full scale return of Spelljammer or a 5th ed version of the Illithiad campaign or diving right into the middle of the Mindflayer vs Gith/Dragon war. Or how about all 3?
    Spelljammer confirmed might be a standard joke, but Games Workshop had Sisters of Battle confirmed and now they are back, Squats confirmed and they released 3 and I’m told there’s even a spin-off Half Life game. Clearly a lot of us want it.

    Wow... the lore must have changed SUBSTANTIALLY from Spelljammer. I loved the art design of the Nautiloid from the outset, even piloting one for much of a campaign, so it's a design I'm well familiar with. Not saying that times couldn't have changed, just that this was not the Nautiloid I grew up with. I'm even willing to accept that maybe this "living ship" is something the illithid discovered how to do later on? And the ship seen in the trailer is an advanced model of this technique? I do remember that module's cover art and thinking I didn't like the way they took a perfectly good spelljammer and turned into a weird Tyrannid kinda thing :/
    In Spelljammer, they were just fancy *wooden* ships built by their slaves (illithids designed them but don't do any work themselves; they're more the brains of the operation :) ). They were no more living things than neogi spider ships. The ram was just carved wood, and the shell was built to shelter the illithids from direct sunlight, being creatures that preferred darkness. The entire ship had a 180' keel with a 30' beam, and weighed 35 tons, with 17 tons set aside for cargo. It had a minimum crew of 10, with a maximum of 35... mostly slaves/rations/batteries. The original art had a couple banks of oars, but there was no space set aside for rowing benches in the hull plan... though you could probably lay some benches in the cargo hold. Apart from the ram, it was armed with 3 medium ballista, 1 medium catapult, and a rear-facing jettison (basically a debris-thrower)
    Pool Helms were actually very rare (10%), as illithids didn't want to exhaust their own power: the main type of Helm found aboard a Nautiloid was a Series Helm, which I believe is what we saw in the trailer, which powers the Helm by draining the life force from victims placed inside. As the Nautiloid was under 50 tons, PCs could easily install a standard Type 1 Helm and operate it without all the evilness :)

      @TheodoreMinick 4 года назад +1

      I've always been a fan of biological technology, and was a little disappointed when I originally found out that the nautiloids were just wood and steel.
      I'm very happy with the changes that Larian introduced, and if they do make a spelljammer book, I hope they keep it in.

    • @jordanwalsh1691
      @jordanwalsh1691 3 года назад

      Thanks for adding this, I like the concept in the BG3 trailer, but the original Nautiloid is charming too, and makes a lot of sense for the setting, because vast numbers of slaves can build lots of fleets, but all that slave labour cannot contribute as significantly if the ships need to be grown.
      One small correction though, as far as I'm aware, Series Helms do not drain life force, they just allow multiple magic users to contribute their power towards moving the ship. Lifejammers and Death Helms are the ones that kill the user.

    I like the idea of mindflayers not so much as building their ships , but growing their ships. For example maybe the Notiloid is a domesticated or dominated and warped version of a Kracken or Proto-Kracken.

    I would like to hear some information about the shattered crystal sphere. Maybe not necessarily what shattered it, but what it used to be, what the theories are about it, or have some kind of adventures that make use of it. Personally, all I've gathered is that the Arcanes came from there, as well as the spelljammers. I have a theory, though, that the Lady of Pain was one of the gods of that sphere, and when she came to Sigil she brought some of the wildspace and atmosphere from there to Sigil and that prevents other gods from messing with it.

    I'm running a campaign where the Illithid Empire has risen up and conquered most of the multiverse again, but my players were born on a world that sectioned itself off entirely. It's been protected for so long that hardly anyone remembers that there is a multiverse, so I've just been running it as a singular world. I can't wait to drop a nautiloid in front of them and have mind flayers march their thrall armies across the world.
