    This is not going to be one of those annoying "BUT BLENDER!!SO MUCH BETTER!!" comments, but i thought about going the blender route for modeling. It is a very impressive piece of software, but in the end, I am back with max. Not just because its the main software at work, it is just still by far my favourite modeling toolset and with these new updates and the new pbr viewport, it is the best all around package for me. The new baking tools UI and inclusion of MikkT is also super nice.

      What is better software to master for automotive and aviation design and that will be a better option for me in the near future? I want the best option which is most realistic. Is it Maya or 3ds max or even blender or c4d ?

    It just took Epic Games about 1 year to upgrade their shading system from older shading model to PBR after Disney released new PBR shading model back in 2012. And it took Autodesk almost 4 years from Max 2018 to 2021 to get PBR preview right......

    • @UpsideDownTutorials
      @UpsideDownTutorials  4 года назад

      Well it took epic a bit more then that, as from what I know they were working on UE4 and specially on the rendering and PBR for few years before even going in alpha. Also for Epic it’s a lot more beneficial and cryptical for getting PBR materials because they are after all a game engine and not a modeling/ asset creation software like max. Also we need to have in mind that Max is a software used not only for games but for visualizations and cinema and those guys were using mostly different renders from what 3ds was offering. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that it took a bit too long for Autodesk to implement PBR workflow, but as game industry became huge the last few years and finally game artist are not the minority, game friendly features became the focus.

      I’m sure you can create realistic looking space environment almost everywhere. Usually for making such things you need some cool designs, nice color palette and to play a bit more with you materials and lights so it looks and feels good. I’ve worked on a small space station project and there the goal was to make it look as realistic as possible, but also have some artistically good looking frames. I ended making the material and models detailed as they would be in real life, but faked some lights as in space usually you either don’t have light source or if it’s around our planet have 1 which is the sun.

      I'm not sure that you've checked 2015 mate, but the features I'm talking about are mostly available because of Arnold. So real time hdri lights in the viewport, PBR materials and support for substance are for sure not things from Max 2014 not 2015. Arnold was first implemented as render that comes in the package of Max inside the 2018 version. As for the AO it's something that was not present in 2020, and now it comes as a new setting that can be accessed from the viewport render menu.

      Well mate, Max 2015 is my main Max version so I know what I'm talking about. For sure.
      Arnold has nothing with Max viewport rendering, that's Nitrous Direct 3D thing (by default).
      Viewport AO was present before Max 2015.

      No one is saying about skipping but about improving and adding new features. Arnold was not a feature that was by default in 3ds max, yes? Don’t get me wrong, I think blender is great, but not production great. There are still many issues when you are getting blender assets inside game engines. I’m not talking here about more common once like Unreal or Unity, but studio custom once. It’s also hard and time consuming for companies to put the effort of changing the pipeline as there have been so many tools already created for max or maya. I’ve used blender just a bit before and I was thinking to make a series on my channel about starting as a new user and giving fresh eye look on it.

      3Ds Max is an investment, if you are working as freelancer that is not doing art for a very specific type of clients and you are working on games, visualizations and movies you need professional software that aligns with the industry standards. Max has a lot of tools both build in and 3rd part (like vray) which many companies are using. So in my case I’m not paying only for new feature as this is my everyday tool. As well upgrades or subscription plans make it much better.

      @@UpsideDownTutorials if you really have a well-paid and permanent job, then I agree, but in other cases I don’t really understand how such a powerful tool like 3ds max can be used, say, at least 80% and how it can recoup the time spent. • @UpsideDownTutorials
      @UpsideDownTutorials  4 года назад

      Using hacked software is not a good thing as people that work on it are after all putting there ward work there. This is why companies like Autodesk have programs for learning where you could sign in and use the software for free with non-commercials purpose. As I said in the previous message it really is an investment, if you are on having the client or working projects (mostly AAA) you need tools that are aligned with the industry, but if you are doing assets or selling models on your own or just have found a studio that uses some other free softwares and you don’t find the value either to invest your time or money in software like 3Ds Max, it’s great. I totally support that as well, I know many awesome artists that use Max or Maya only in there professional work and use Blender in non-profit personal projects. After all once you get the basics and knowledge behind creating 3D art, what tools you are using is a matter of personal preference or professional needs.
