Insurance is shared risk. This is where everyone pays into a fund to cover losses incurred by someone in the group. Think of it as a Go Fund Me type system. The issue is, rates must rise to cover losses in times of a high number of houses being damaged / high repair costs. You could start an insurance co with your like minded friends and do a better job.
@@bobroberts2371that’s how it’s supposed to work but in Florida not so much. The lawyers got in with their buddies in the legislature and made it a slam dunk to sue the insurance companies. So much so that the insurance companies were required to contribute to a indemnity fund to pay the suits. All a homeowner had to do was hire the lawyer , then he sent the paperwork in and a check was cut. That’s the entire reason that rates have gone through the roof. People say “What about storms?” There have ALWAYS been storms. If you look up the stats on lawsuits against insurance companies, Florida has 98% of those suits. But they passed laws to fix the problem recently. However in the week before the legislation took effect, over 250,000 lawsuits were filed. So we have to wade through all of those before things start going back to some semblance of normal. My insurance went up 40% last year but this year it only went up $60, so I’m hoping we turned a corner. Wait and see, I guess.
@@richardswann5300 1:24 Why is this new law necessary if squatters could be charged with unlawful entry before? Why were they never charged with a crime?
Not as long as this administration is in power. I am assuming they look at it as housing they don't have to come up with for their influx of illegals. Sad times we are in, but way to go Florida for taking control of this situation. I am assuming Texas is next, but in Texas, they already have to deal with armed homeowners and landlords.
I know what you're asking, but the laws protecting squatters were not written to protect the squatters, but to protect legitimate tenants. If a landlord decided he didn't want to go through the painful and expensive process of eviction (you wouldn't believe what's involved to do that), he could just call the cops and say the tenants are squatters and get them tossed - so the laws protect actual tenants. The problem is that squatters use the same laws that protect tenants. Worse, many squatters stay in properties for years as the ineffective laws now on the books give them too many options for dragging out relief for the owner.
It's only considered trespassing if the property is currently occupied when the squatters move in. Like if they move in while the owners are on vacation. It has to be a vacant property to be considered squatting.
Because laws that come in effect immediately usually cause troubles as nobody has the time to adjust. In this case all of the government agencies involved so policies are created and personnel is instructed so it can be enforced properly.
So it seems that if a tenant stops paying rent, they are not squatters and therefore must be removed by a lengthy eviction. ALL loopholes need to be eliminated. This is a great start to fairness for homeowners.
Renters had a legal contact and when they stop paying it is a breach of contract and needs to go court. This is the cost of doing business. Breach contracts.
@@shantae8247 Yes but going to court over a breached contract can take months or even years to resolve. Meanwhile the renter stays there without paying while the landlord still has to pay mortgage, taxes, and possibly utilities. The system is broken like many in our country and any law that takes the side of a criminal like a squatter or a renter who has breached their contract needs to be overturned in a reasonable amount of time to protect landlords from financial ruin. This happened to a friend of mine during COVID. Her husband died shortly before and they had multiple rentals. They had so much difficulty getting rid of the people who use the COVID law pertaining to not being able to be forced out for non-payment of rent. It went on with some of them for years. She and her family lost so much money during this time. The laws don't protect the owners and it needs to change.
I own 4 lots in PCL and have held off for years to build on them due to squatter concerns. As I am out of State, I am at the mercy of the useless laws. Hopefully this will change things.
Absolves government responsibility for providing and maintaining social housing. Becomes the financial responsibility of private homeowners so you have to deal with it. Socialism at its finest logic.
If my property were stolen I would make use of the Everglades. The squatters would find themselves gathered up in the dead of night and on their way to the swamp. They would find out what hungry alligators do when someone falls into the water. No muss, no fuss.
Smart move! It is not fair, nor just that these squatters take over a property that the owner worked hard to pay off or is still paying mortgage on it nor should these squatters have the right to steal what is inside the home that is not theirs. Allowing this is criminal.
This agent bought a property from a woman who didn't know how to handle squatters. When did he buy it? He must have known legislation was imminent on squatters. Did he advise his client on the legislation? If he bought it recently he probably got it at a big discount. Seems shifty to me.
So you would rather no one buy the property and have the squatters live in it rent free until the hose is destroyed leaving the lady with a house that needs torn down?
Don't think so, it's just been the last few weeks that this issue exploded into national news with high profile cases elsewhere. He doesn't have a crystal ball.
I felt like she was probably in a situation where she just didn't want to have to deal with any of it. She probably felt like she was getting a good deal just to get out from under ownership of that house. I've known people that had their family members die in another state and they didn't have the time or energy to deal with clearing out the house and selling it. So they sold the whole thing at a discount just to get some money out of it and not have to handle it themselves. Maybe this is a similar situation.
I way looking for this comment. Seemed like he was saying he got himself a sweet deal to take the property off her hands for a discount because he could deal with the issue where she should have had law enforcement on her side so she could make a decision in her best interest not to get out from under it. Wonder how many real estate guys like this are “helping out” elderly home owners by purchasing instead of law helping out tax payers to keep their property safe?
But why do squatters go for houses from regular people instead of squatting in houses bought by corporations or investors? THOSE are the houses that should be squatted, not the houses of middle class americans struggling to afford their mortgage.
There was a recent story of a Hollywood Hills (California) home that was occupied by squatters. Several of them moved in, had furniture, were cooking meals, etc… For some reason those squatters were removed immediately. No court needed. That tells me that whoever owns that house is wealthy and very well connected.
I don’t think any house should be taken over by a squatter. It doesn’t belong to them. I do think foreign countries should be denied purchasing land or realty in the US. Americans only.
@@billybrown7953 So you think it's acceptable for companies and people who are already rich to buy up houses that middle class Americans could potentially purchase instead? I live in California it takes 2 years to get squatters out and that is with an attorney The only new laws newsom would pass is to give squatters more rights
Of course squatters are claiming everything and why wouldn’t they? The law in many states is on their side and they know that it will take several months for them to be legally “evicted”. In that time the squatters live for free in the property, often times causing very costly repairs. You might get a judgment against them, but they will NEVER pay. Politicians don’t care because those squatters are probably voting for them. There was a recent story of squatters taking over a Hollywood Hills (California) home. For some reason those squatters were forced to leave immediately. That tells me that someone wealthy and powerful owns that home.
@@elysianmuse6260 Trespassing and squatting are different in California. Once squatters have moved in it’s no longer considered trespassing. At that point the legal owner of the property needs to serve the squatter(s) a legal 3-day notice to vacate. This, in theory, gives the squatter(s) time to move out. Once the 3-day notice expires and the squatter(s) haven’t left THEN the owner needs to start the eviction process. The squatters in the Hollywood Hills house had moved in and we’re no longer trespassing therefore, according to the law, should have been given 3-days notice and then served with eviction papers if they hadn’t yet moved out. Then starting the months long eviction process. Instead the police were allowed to evict them right away. I agree that they should have been thrown out right away, but it looks like the owner was given special consideration and didn’t have to go through the long legal process like the average person.
I don’t even understand why squatters have any rights. They do nothing but take what belongs to other people, but somehow get rights to do that. What about the rights of property owners? You know, the people who actually paid for the property and pay taxes to be allowed to keep it?
If someone steals a car the police will run the thieves down and arrest them - because all they have to do is run the plates (among other things) to verify the rightful owner. - It should be the same with “squatters” /thieves, there are numerous ways to verify the owner including county records which police need to have same access to - just like running plates- (and if the people do not have a lease signed by the owner to prove they have an agreement with the owner to live there for x amount of time according to a lease as actual legal renters) and the owner is willing to give a statement to police that the people are not on a lease and are in fact unlawful intruders - that statement should be enough because there are already laws regarding filing false report etc to police that can be used to prosecute the owner if they make a false claim and the owner could also be sued for alot of money for breaching the lease/rental agreement etc- if that were the case so it is highly unlikely anyone would ever claim people were unlawful intruders - BREAKING AND ENTERING- if that were not the case. The criminals 2:07 should be arrested for breaking and entering immediately and prosecuted and sued to pay for the damages and distress they cause to families that worked hard to own the property and pay taxes to community and state that is suppose to uphold laws to protect communities from such crime.

Totally Agree 💯
Now that's how you get stuff done. Now please fix the insurance problems
They can't do anything about insurance, private corporations can charge what they want and if they try to regulate them they leave the state..
“Fix the insurance problem?” It was migrants that fixed the roofs.
@walterconcrete5017 They are not migrants. They are criminals!
They are illegal aliens who broke the law and came into this country illegally!
I don’t always agree with Disantis’s politics, but this is a God send for a lot of people!! Hope all states follow suit!!!

0:50 Apparently squatting ISN'T a crime. It's a civil matter. That's the whole problem. It SHOULD be a crime.
Exactly! it's a form of theft!
I would think it would be called unlawful entry.
I've heard of cases where squatters took over when people were just on a vacation. It's just insanity.
@@richardswann5300 1:24 Why is this new law necessary if squatters could be charged with unlawful entry before? Why were they never charged with a crime?
@@inthesun3884 Squatters can take over when you're at work.
Thank you Governor!
I have some property for squatters. It’s in our local cemetery. Nice digs.
This needs to be a federal law!
Once again... A win for Florida. Well done governor desantis. Wish all states would get on board with This!
Newsome welcomes all squatters in California
@@yamama7265 - They should move into his home or properties.
Its weird how simple common sense became so uncommon.
And in San Francisco the city will pay legal defense against the owners!!! Insane.
Hey squatters, meet my 2 best friends...SMITH & WESSON....and also my other friend, Mr Remington. BANG
They are criminals that violate owners properties.
If squatter's can't pay rent then they can't pay a hospital or car repair bill! Follow a squatter to Walmart and take action before the parking lot 🎉
Why is it so hard to get rid of squatters? It's trespassing at the very least, home invasion at worst.
Being evicted after a lengthy process is part of the problem. How about squatters being imprisoned for a lengthy period of time and not just evicted!
Why does there need to be a new law? Isnt trespassing a law? Isnt doing damage against the law? Just asking
It has to be a vacant property to be considered squatting.
why on earth hasn't this been implemented all along....
July?
Why wait three mouths?
What’s wrong with today, this minute?
Because that's not how laws work.
Because laws that come in effect immediately usually cause troubles as nobody has the time to adjust. In this case all of the government agencies involved so policies are created and personnel is instructed so it can be enforced properly.
This is criminal. When the f do squatters have rights? This make no sense.
Put the squatters in jail amd fine them money owed for the use of home and any damages
Can’t see that horrible Governor Hochul ftom NY helping home owners against those squatters
H-Ho-How did squatting EVER become a protected thing? How… it makes zero common sense.
Absolves government responsibility for providing and maintaining social housing. Becomes the financial responsibility of private homeowners so you have to deal with it. Socialism at its finest logic.
Why don't they ever get held accountable for damaging property?
If my property were stolen I would make use of the Everglades. The squatters would find themselves gathered up in the dead of night and on their way to the swamp. They would find out what hungry alligators do when someone falls into the water.
No muss, no fuss.
When does breaking and entering come into the equation? That is exactly what squatters are doing.
Why is it not as simple as reporting a breaking and entering to have squatters removed and arrested ?
Should be country-wide.
Long overdue!
There is no more worse theft than squatting
Smart move! It is not fair, nor just that these squatters take over a property that the owner worked hard to pay off or is still paying mortgage on it nor should these squatters have the right to steal what is inside the home that is not theirs. Allowing this is criminal.
With many squatters pretending to be tenants, I wonder how they will be able to discern real tenants from squatters posing as tenants.
The Florida. Law gets it into court within days vs. Months and has penalties for fraud.
It cost my brother about $30k to repair his house after he got squatters out after about a year trying.
Finally something I can agree on with DeSantis.
@@stevebeegreat Biden 2024!
"Great!! Here's the mortgage and utility bills! Thanks!"
Ha ha ha you squatters are going to be gone.
Why they give rights to criminals
This agent bought a property from a woman who didn't know how to handle squatters. When did he buy it? He must have known legislation was imminent on squatters. Did he advise his client on the legislation? If he bought it recently he probably got it at a big discount. Seems shifty to me.
Yup he seems like a shady dude
Who the insurance pay if the house burns down ??? Or would they even pay ?????
But why do squatters go for houses from regular people instead of squatting in houses bought by corporations or investors? THOSE are the houses that should be squatted, not the houses of middle class americans struggling to afford their mortgage.
There was a recent story of a Hollywood Hills (California) home that was occupied by squatters. Several of them moved in, had furniture, were cooking meals, etc… For some reason those squatters were removed immediately. No court needed. That tells me that whoever owns that house is wealthy and very well connected.
They do go after bank and corporate owned houses.
I don’t think any house should be taken over by a squatter. It doesn’t belong to them. I do think foreign countries should be denied purchasing land or realty in the US. Americans only.
NOT TOO BRIGHT, ARE YOU?
@@billybrown7953 So you think it's acceptable for companies and people who are already rich to buy up houses that middle class Americans could potentially purchase instead? I'm not defending squatters in general, just saying they should go after the people and companies that buy them for the sake of "investments" or "assets" when there are people who are struggling to be able to buy a house. Also harassing the caps lock key isn't going to increase your IQ either...
This law needs to be in all 50 states!
Thank you Governor DeSantis !
Not sure why it took so long ! !
But it's finally done ! ! !
You've got my vote for Governor ! ! ! !
It should have been put in place immediately not wait till July
Just so you know, this law was passed unanimously by the Florida legislature. That means all Democrats and Republicans voted for it. DeSantis couldn't have vetoed it even if he had wanted to. So the legislature gets the real credit. Just saying.
We must stop unlawful acts!
I live in California it takes 2 years to get squatters out and that is with an attorney
The only new laws newsom would pass is to give squatters more rights
Of course squatters are claiming everything and why wouldn’t they? The law in many states is on their side and they know that it will take several months for them to be legally “evicted”. In that time the squatters live for free in the property, often times causing very costly repairs. You might get a judgment against them, but they will NEVER pay. Politicians don’t care because those squatters are probably voting for them. There was a recent story of squatters taking over a Hollywood Hills (California) home. For some reason those squatters were forced to leave immediately. That tells me that someone wealthy and powerful owns that home.
They probably offered them a lot of money to leave.
@@eileenryan4687 According to the news story the police came in and removed them. They didn’t mention anything about paying them to leave.
I think they had been there less than 30 days
🏠🤔 It's important to respect property rights and avoid squatting issues.
That’s why you don’t leave any structure unoccupied anywhere. You get security people to monitor it.
I don’t even understand why squatters have any rights. They do nothing but take what belongs to other people, but somehow get rights to do that. What about the rights of property owners? You know, the people who actually paid for the property and pay taxes to be allowed to keep it?
Keep advertising the problem! 🙄
Mostly everyone seen tha Asylum Seeker post

Why do you call trespassers squatters??
As a property owner I support this legislation.
It's ignorant that we need laws against thieves.
