Honestly if you look at statustics then most piracy rates are heavily exaggerated. Pirates who would've paid otherwise have never been a majority or even a substantial minority. Piracy alone will never make or break a release.
And for indie devs piracy often works as viable advertisement, as the visibility they get can get lead to more sales in the long run than short-term losses from piracy.

I only pirated games I couldn't buy (or when I didn't have an bank account). Majority of games I pirated are old games like gba games, so pirating them doesn't steal any money from nintendo, I'm just not giving money to the guy selling them overpriced on ebay. The few recent games I pirated I already bought or plan on buying when I'm able to. I know I can't speak for everyone, but I heard many similar stories. If someone really likes a game, they will buy it even if pirating is an easier option, even if they already pirated it they will buy it. If someone doesn't like a game that much, they wouldn't by the game in the first place.

God I hate the phrase, "If buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't stealing", it literally never was theft.
If it was theft, then it would reflect in sales, but since piracy is tapping into a market of those that can't buy the game, then all piracy will do is make the game sell more.
This has literally been observed in multiple studies, even one by the UN, where piracy increased sales for both video games and music, (though in that one not movies but maybe don't spend so much on advertising lol).
