They had the best arcade games for a long time because teens loved arcades back then eventually all most people knew them for was Mortal Kombat and the better pinball machines despite having Rampage and few other notable titles
When MK2 came on I thought this was all a clever ruse to surprise us with more Kombat Time. Seen so much Mugen at this point that seeing normal MK gameplay actually feels wrong.
I absolutely *love* this collection. It is also sad this was the last place Primal Rage has been ported officially. I have the arcade cabinet (with the last version they made), but it would be nice for it to be released in some way again for modern audiences.
There's actually a small handful of Primal Rage 2 cabs out there, only a few were released unfinished as Willams/Bally/Midway were kind of in their deaththrows by this point.
Honestly, I grew up with all three of these collections and loved them all to death. I know Midway isn't everyone's favorite developer, but I always loved them for how creative and innovative they can be once you get into any of their games. They may be cheesy and products of their time, but I can't get enough of them regardless. Plus with games like Smash TV, Mortal Kombat 2 and Hydro Thunder, you can't go wrong.
I will always have a special place in my heart for Midway, though more so Williams the parent company for much of their run. I think anyone who grew up in the 80's is likely similar.
The 1989 release of Hard Drivin' was a full three years before Virtua Racing, which is actually impressive given how realistic it was (VR was a more traditional style of arcade racer). If anything, Hard Drivin' is proof that you shouldn't focus on realism to the exclusion of everything esle.
I love Gauntlet II so much. My fondest memory of this game is playing it with my friend for hours and getting really far. We get through one more level and I just look at him and ask him "Do you still want to play this?" he replies "Oh, I thought you were really into this." and I'm like, "Nah I thought you were really into it..." so we just put our controllers down and turned the console off.
Fun Fact: There technically does exist a PS4/XBONE 8th Gen Midway Arcade Collection, however it's tucked away inside a level pack for Lego Dimensions (The toys to life one), and has the following games: 720, Badlands, Blasteroids, Championship Sprint, Defender, Defender II, Gauntlet, Gauntlet II, KLAX, Joust, Joust 2, Marble Madness, Paperboy, Rampage, Road Blasters, Robron, Spyhunter, SuperSprint, Timber, Toobin, Cyberball, Vindicators and Xybots.
I would really love another Midway arcade compilation. Games that should be included would be Robby Roto, Domino Man, Zwackery, Peter Pack Rat, Sarge, Blasted, Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters, Skull & Crossbones, High Impact Football, Pigskin 621 AD, Trog, Thunderjaws, and Guardians of the Hood. Yeah, these are all real games.
Midway Games were a treasures of our youths, and looking at these classic arcade games, is like opening up a time capsule. It’s nice to see you are playing these games.
God I'd love a modern release of these collections. I grew up playing them on my PS2. Midway's catalog on the Switch in particular would be a dream come true!
In Xenophobe, each player in splitscreen is allowed to explore the ship and complete the level objectives on their own, then you meet back up for escape before a death countdown. Or you guys can just steamroll every room together. In Kozmik Kroozer, the ship looks like a 3d model because it is. If you pressed like X or Y on the title in the title list to see the supplementary material available, you would have seen the original cabs were fittted with scale animatronic Motherships that reflected their image onto the play surface. It looks cool.
Something that's leaping out at me is how high-res a lot of these games were, were think "240p" for everything before the HD era, but Hard Drivin' was 508x380.
That's a digitized version of the California avenue train stop in Chicago. 30 years later, the sign looks almost identical, with the exact same typeface and address. Only difference is that the sign is blue now.
I really love APB on the arcade with the wheel, pedal, and flashing police lights at the top of the cabinet. The only copy I can currently find is at Galloping Ghost Brookfield Illinois
APB:.You know there's a game on steam called "Dirty Cop Simulator" but maybe that's a little too on the nose Arch Rivals: Those cheerleaders sure do have faces Cyberball: *punt Hard Driving: The classic question. Is this real or is it the Hard Drive? NARC: Stone Cold, where the hero kills a helicopter with a motorcycle. Primal Rage: Primordial Fight, Rage of Time, Savage Clash, Wild Speed: Dino Thunder Rampage: Oh cool, a low def remake of Terror of Hemasaurus! Timber: Canadian red mario and Canadian blue mario Wacko: Oh cool, Wacko, my favorite ga- oh. Xenaphobe: Just kidding, Xenaphobe on the NES, though, I have fond memories of pla- oh.
Xenophobia is not an easy game to just jump into. So for those who are curious, here is everything I remember about the game. Xenophobia was designed as a 3 player game (hence the division of the screen) with the players working in tandem to clear out as many aliens as possible, as well as gather salvage and other stuff. Player selection has no effect on gameplay beyond what you look like, the color of your uniform, and which level of the screen is your active screen. Players are encourage to split up to cover more ground and kill more aliens and to explore faster. The aliens are very much ripoffs of Alien xenomorphs, and even have a life cycle, starting as eggs, then hatching into hermit-crab looking things that can crawl up your player and damage them, to hardshell horseshoe crab-looking things that can ball up to reflect projectiles and roll/bounce around the room, to the final big alien form. If left alone long enough, they will grow into the next form, but I think there is a finite number of aliens, as I don't think the final forms lay eggs, at least not in the early stages, so at least you have a finite goal. There are two additional "forms" - one is a tentacle that can grab you from the floor or ceiling, and the other is a full grown alien that peeks around corners. Players can jump, walk, crouch, and crawl to avoid projectiles and attacks from the aliens. Getting attacked obviously lowers your life points, and getting hit hard can knock the weapon out of a players hand or knock them prone into the "sexy Maxim Male Model pose" which takes a bit to get up from as you have to go from crouch to standing. BTW: If a player loses their weapon and goes to another area, a bot comes by after a few seconds to drop a new new one off. Players can also interact with the environment via conditional commands for both buttons. These commands appear at the lower part of each player's screen area and will change depending on your proximity to triggers. These commands allow you to unlock panels, use teleporters, delay the self-destruct, toggle turrets, throw grenades, use stuff in your inventory after you pick it up, etc. etc... Obviously you can pick up additional weapons, and some of them are better than your starter weapon. You can also pick up grenades and other throwables Be careful - many things are throwable, and it is possible to accidentally chuck your weapon away. As you saw, there is a time limit (ie: the self-destruct). Once it runs out, you do not die, you just get beamed back to your ship, the are is considered lost to the aliens and blowwed up real good, and you move on to the next infestation unless you kill enough aliens in which you are beamed back earlier, the area is considered saved and NOT blowwed up, and get some bonus points I think. Also, you can see the infestation percentage on a monitor in one of the rooms, but other than that, you get to guess how many you have left. Biggest problem IMO is lack of any kind of minimap. There is no way to know where you are in relation to anything, even other players unless they walk into the same room as you. I want to say there are multiple floors in some maps, but I'm really not sure anymore. No matter what, you're flying blind. While it's possible to clean out enough aliens to save the bases, it's very hard without other players after level 1. Honestly, this plays more like a PC game than an arcade game and has a lot of elements that are never explained in game. Heck the attract mode doesn't show ANY gameplay at all. The only reason I know about it is we had it in an arcade, I tried it, had much of the reaction Matt did, and then went online to see what the heck this thing was (thank you GAMEFAQS). Basically, it tosses the player in the deep end of the pool as soon as they start and them throws an additional brick at them for good measure. But... once I knew what was going on, I had some fun. It's not a terrible multiplayer, or even single player experience, though multiplayer is definitely the way to go. I'd kinda like to see the Triple KO crew trying to futz their way through it (now that you know a little more about it) . Honestly, it was a game a bit too ambitious for its time and hardware and can be a real mess if you don't know anything about it, but I still gotta give 'em props for trying.
APB is a fun game. Had it on the Lynx. The map is pretty big, you can explore offroad to find money and time. You can help people broken down on the sude of the road, bust crackheads (they smoke crack in the bed of driving trucks), and deal with bosses. The bosses are on specific hiways so you have to exolore a bit. The game is bit in depth.
I remember having this for the PS2, the only games I ever really played on it were MK2, MK3, Rampage, and Primal Rage, I pretty much just ignored everything else. Lol.
@@alejandroramirez4470 Ehhh, a lot of it was throwaway stuff in my opinion, games like Pit Fighter, Spy Hunter, Hard Drivin’ etc. I really didn’t care for most of the games.
Primal Rage was one of the few 2D Fighters that had especially drawn damage zones per frame. Super hard to do compared to the hurt and damage boxes that every fighter used.
1:06:59 Yes lol. This boss is absolutely insane. I totally owned this Midway collection on OG Xbox. A friend and I worked at getting all 225 keys to get to the big treasure room at the end. Such a cool game
Stonecold is one of my favourite bad movies. It has everything you could want: all the explosions, all the lame baddasses, Lance Hendrickson, screaming guitars. Everything!
HardDrivin' arcade... never have I spent more money to simply take my car to the Stunt Track and go flying off the loop to try to get a sick explosion replay
The trick to beating arcade MK2 was to use Baraka. The AI would predict every move for every other character, but with Baraka it could not manage the back, back,LP scissor attack and would walk into it consistently.
We're just calling it SAVAGE FURY. And to make it legally distinct, feathered dinos. Stjepan Šejić has some really fun design ideas and I think that vein could make for some kind of regal and majestic designs. You wouldn't go for nature documentary or anything, but feathered crowns/crests, cool feather tail blades, arm blades, and spikes would be chef's kiss. Go wild really and also use a bunch of different apes, monkeys, and lemurs for the apes. I'd even throw in an eldritch horror.
My version on PS2 has Xybots as well... One of those games I always looked at in the arcades as a kid, but never spend a coin on because it looked too complicated...
Loved a lot of the Midway/Atari classic games like Xenophobe, Vindicators, Xybots, Smash TV, Crystal Castles and such. As a kid with an Xbox, I was lucky to grow up with the Genesis and PS1 and playing the Midway Collections on those too.
Shame Matt didn't get to APB's "interrogation" minigame... Would've loved to see his reaction to THAT This collection might also be the last official release of the original MK3 rom
Matt I'm not gonna lie. I'm a little disappointed with your lack of skills in APB. Don't give up, it's one of the true Midwest Classics. I remember being addicted with APB when I was a kid in the 80's and I still enjoy playing it today. Keep practicing, you'll get it.
I feel bad for your experience with Wizard of Wor, the game is NOT supposed to speed up or become unplayable when there's less monsters on the screen. The fools that ported it forgot to use a framerate cap AND the pressure-sensitive joysticks that let you turn without moving aren't implemented. It's a VERY POOR port of a co-op classic. Fire it up in MAME and see the difference!
APB was amazing in the arcade, and yes, you were correct that it did have a steering wheel controller set up. You shouldn't have given up too soon though, as it was showing the first criminal you have to catch when you switched to Arch Rivals. Awesome work, good sir.
I seriously wish they would make a new Midway Arcade Treasures collection that had all the games from the previous compilations, including games that have never been featured, such as Trog, Pigskin 621 AD, Area 51, and Carnevil. Hell, maybe also include the Bally and Williams pinball machines if possible.
My first exposure to NARC was at my local Pizza Hut. They used to swap out arcade games every so often, with NARC being one. Also, my suggestion for the dinosaur game would be "Rage of the Primal." Sounds pretty standard to what a lot of these retro "inspired" games do for their titles.
34:25 😳 STONE COLD ?!? The Boz ?! It was a preview on tape I owned, I've yet to see the movie but there are chains of amino acids floating inside my skull that contain the audio, the way the VA says "The Boz".....😂 dude was gunning for a spot between Jean Claude and Steven 😌 Thanks Matt, I was beginning to grow concerned that The Boz was some ungoogled phantom
Xenophobe was ported to the Atari Lynx. I had a lot of fun playing it in the 6th grade with my friend, who happened to have two Lynxes with link cable. The sluggish gameplay didn't seem to be a problem on a handheld.
MK1 wasn't in this collection due to moving it to a special disc tied with MK Deception's "Kollectors edition" I know this because I got my copy for PS2 many years ago from a local "Toys R Us".
I loved playing Xenophobe on NES with my friend as a kid and we were disappointed when they started recycling levels. It was such a cool and creepy game to an 8 year old. I also liked Spy Hunter on NES and would do a glitch to get past the beginning bit without any hassle.
I still play Primal Rage man, freaking love the game i learned to play game on keyboard, controller, you name it i and i don't think i'll ever stop, it got me into fighting games, i'm still discovering new stuff, i love it man, wish the game would come back.
Here's some dinosaur fighting game titles. Tyrannosaurus Wrecks, Dino Demolition, death of the dinosaurs, stone age slammers, cretaceous crushers, or Fossil Fighters.
Someone else may have pointed this out, but as far as I know the first game that used digitized graphics came out in 1983 in the form of "Journey". The characters heads were still images of the band's faces. Sure, SUPER primitive... but it still TECHNICALLY counts. hehe
Aw shit I remember APB in my local Pizza Hut and I'm not being silly here. My local Pizza Hut actually had this game and I remember trying and failing at it.
APB and Championship Sprint absolutely were wheel-and-pedal games, does it show? I'm surprised they didn't package a controller adapter for such a thing, given the number of driving games in the pack. Still, it has Gauntlet 2 and Rampage World Tour, two of the BEST multiplayer shenanigans games of arcade history, and we all know about the MKs.
Loved that game on PS2!, the videos on the "Extra" option really worth it to watch it, mostly the Mortal Kombat ones since in one of them there were 2 staffs member that literally they were fighting in whole video just because a debate of: "Who is better?, Raiden vs Sektor", lol!. Also I loved to play Rampage on that game, I remember that I spent over 4 hours straight just to beat all the 128 levels in the game, and the ending..., let's say that worth it, lol.
Had this collection on Xbox and it was pretty hit or miss. Really enjoyed hard driving, mortal kombat even though the lag was not great, narc because infinite quarter beat em ups, and oddly enough was really into xenophobe, I thought the concept of it in an arcade was really interesting and challenging but still fun.😅
MK1 was included with MK Deception Premium Pack while UMK3 was included with MK Armageddon Premium Edition. The PS2 was great in being able to play all 4 emulated games on one console.
just came across your channel have to say thank you been having a rough time and you cheered me up no end looking forward to seeing more of your videos thanks again :)
39:29 FUN FACTOID: On Super Nintendo, Pit-Fighter goes by another name: SH*T-Fighter. even Nintendo Power HATED it saying back in the day they gave it I think the Number 5 rating on their worst SNES Games ever list. That's saying something as Shaq-Fu & Rise of the Robots are on the SNES as well!
Shaq Fu is bad but it's way better than Rise of the Robots and Pit-Fighter. I remember getting to preview Rise of the Robots at a Future Entertainment Show here in the UK nearly 30 years ago when it was still in development. It was boring and limited and one of the devs or publishers or just whoever they roped in to try big up the game was there trying to convince us it was still far from finished and there would be a lot more to it when complete. I played the game when it came out. It was exactly the same. :P
@@carn9507 Whoa! A gaming company lied? Color me shocked! but that's still cool that you got to preview a Game, shame it was Rise of the Robots but still...
My introduction to NARC was on my cousins NES, i was so freaked out by the clown that threw syringes. But this game is great and I enjoyed this port from this collection.
@Flophouse Plays A small tip for APB... DONT tap the siren, Hold it down... The Traffic moves out of your way! It was a bad game but funnily I enjoyed it!!!
A couple names for an alternative Primal Rage (off the top of my head): Primodial Slaughter Primitive Destruction Fossil Fighters Dino Thrashers Here you go. You can mix and match to find your own too! I'll be waiting for my cheque
Midway might not be the greatest developer, but they have a keen sense for what will impress 15-year-old boys.

Pit Fighter is the second fighting game to use digitized sprites. The first one is Rekai Doshi: Chinese Exorcist by Home Data in 1988.
Thank you. That was the one I was thinking of.

They skipped MK1 here because that year, it was the special edition bonus for MK Deception. All three MKs are on the PSP and PC version

Would've loved to see his reaction to THAT
This collection might also be the last official release of the original MK3 rom
Matt I'm not gonna lie. I'm a little disappointed with your lack of skills in APB. Don't give up, it's one of the true Midwest Classics. I remember being addicted with APB when I was a kid in the 80's and I still enjoy playing it today. Keep practicing, you'll get it.
I remember playing this at 6 and not caring it was an M rated game. Good times
I absolutely love this game was the only collection that have primal rage I'm hoping that tickler game gets a re-release along with part 2
i rented it for my ps2 when i was like 12 (: those were the days
I was 13 and it didn’t matter..I was pretty much reaching the age I can play M rated games!
The Boz ?! It was a preview on tape I owned, I've yet to see the movie but there are chains of amino acids floating inside my skull that contain the audio, the way the VA says "The Boz".....😂 dude was gunning for a spot between Jean Claude and Steven 😌
Thanks Matt, I was beginning to grow concerned that The Boz was some ungoogled phantom
Championship Sprint was kinda slippery _with_ the wheel in arcades, it's absolutely horrendous without one.
Actually Matt, the MK1 arcade port was on the Midway Arcade Treasures Extended Play on the PSP which also had MK2 and MK3
No kidding i was playing my PS2 copy 2 days ago. It was feeling like a NARC afternoon.
I loved playing Xenophobe on NES with my friend as a kid and we were disappointed when they started recycling levels. It was such a cool and creepy game to an 8 year old. I also liked Spy Hunter on NES and would do a glitch to get past the beginning bit without any hassle.
"I'm just a forklift! You can't fuck with this!"
That should be on an inspirational poster or something. I'd put it in my office.
Tyrannosaurus Wrecks,
Dino Demolition, death of the dinosaurs, stone age slammers, cretaceous crushers, or Fossil Fighters.
Fossil Fighters is already taken.
@@Hyper_Drud oops. That sucks. But the others are still cool, right?
R.I.P. Midway :(

@@RAIN_2001 huh? What does F mean?

@@RAIN_2001 oh ok I never played Call of Duty.
@@joeyparkhill8751 understand its okay
Someone else may have pointed this out, but as far as I know the first game that used digitized graphics came out in 1983 in the form of "Journey".
The characters heads were still images of the band's faces. Sure, SUPER primitive... but it still TECHNICALLY counts. hehe
Aw shit I remember APB in my local Pizza Hut and I'm not being silly here. My local Pizza Hut actually had this game and I remember trying and failing at it.
APB has crazy depth for an arcade game. It really needed to lose either the time limit or gas gauge, keep the demerits.
I had this. Loved getting to play mk2 and 3 plus arch rivals I believe.
Extinction Level Beatdown! Thats the name you need.
Was playing this collection only yesterday on the OG Xbox. Mixed bag but good fun for half hour or so.
They had a collection with the Rush games and other arcade racers 9n it. I'd buy that again in a heartbeat.
MK1 was included with MK Deception Premium Pack while UMK3 was included with MK Armageddon Premium Edition. The PS2 was great in being able to play all 4 emulated games on one console.
The last boss of total carnage hits different
Primal rage is the best.
I would try a different name like Dinocalypse or something
Excellent!
I think a good name for a Primal Rage sequence is:
"Primal Rage: Art of Extinction"
My cousins and me played so much MK2 and Rampage 64.
I would love for you to play more arcade compilations! It's fun seeing you try different games!
just came across your channel have to say thank you been having a rough time and you cheered me up no end looking forward to seeing more of your videos thanks again :)
@@joeyparkhill8751 oh there were other games at the show too. It's cool. It was a nice event overall. But yeah, Rise was garbage. :P
Legally distinct Primal rage: Instinctual Fury
APB reminds me of some of the cut scenes from Road Rash 1 or 2.
i mostly played this collection for Primal Rage , MK2 , and Rampage as a wee lad
My introduction to NARC was on my cousins NES, i was so freaked out by the clown that threw syringes. But this game is great and I enjoyed this port from this collection.
I thought Samurai Cop was impressive, but APB has proven he has nothing on Charizard Police Chief. LOUSY COP! BWOOOOOOOOOOOOOAR!
@Flophouse Plays A small tip for APB... DONT tap the siren, Hold it down... The Traffic moves out of your way! It was a bad game but funnily I enjoyed it!!!
I still miss Midway. Klassic MK, Primal Rage, Rampage: World Tour and Narc were the reasons to own this collection.
Oh damn, Arch Rivals! I played that back in the arcade!
Dinosaurs in older books were referred to as "thunder lizards."
You want your dino fighting game to be called "Age of Thunder" or "Reign of Thunder."
Primal Fury would be a rad name for a theorhetical dino fighting game
Treasures 3 is my favourite pack (AKA Hydro Thunder plus some other games)
"The dog and the ladies are doing it" ~Matt McMuscles, 2023
A couple names for an alternative Primal Rage (off the top of my head):
Primodial Slaughter
Primitive Destruction
Fossil Fighters
Dino Thrashers
Here you go. You can mix and match to find your own too! I'll be waiting for my cheque
Pretty sure Fossil fighters is already taken
