Bought a bottle last year because of all the hype... biggest letdown amongst Islay Scotches for me. The nose is decent enough, smokey and sweet (sherry? ), but the pallet was one dimensional, thin and just weak. In the last 18 months I've gone through lots of Islays: Ardbeg 10, Ardbeg Uiegedal, Ardbeg Corryvrecken, Laphroaig 10, Laphroaig Triple Wood, Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength, Kilchoman Machier Bay, Bunnahabhain 12, Port Charlotte Heavily Peated, Port Askaig 110 proof and I'll even throw in Talisker 10 and the 2003 Balvenie Peet Week. I know the last 2 are not from Islay. But all of these are better IMO than Lagavulin 16. And we haven't even talked about price point! But I think I've made my point... Real "Peat Heads" will agree with me I believe. And maybe the Lagavulin 16 is just not what it used to be 5-10 years ago... I've heard others say that as well...
For me Lagavulin 16 was flat as well when I opened a bottle and have my first glass. I was also very dissapointed. But then I finished the bottle don't know when and this expression became one of my favorite scotch. So Laga needs to brearh in a bottle for a while. But of course one of the most beautiful thing in whisky world is that we all have different taste and like or dislike different things. ;)
I've done this exact comparison and Lagavulin 16 was my least favorite. Too one dimensional and just very flat and weak compared to Ardbeg and Laphroaig. I've even compared it to Talisker 10 and Kilchoman Machier Bay and Lagavulin was still my least favorite. I love peated Scotches: Laphroaig Cask Strength and Ardbeg Corryvrecken are probably my favorites. Lagavulin 16 is just a letdown... only for people who want to say "I like peated scotch too..." but really just want to be like Ron Swanson...
A classic and must have at some point in anyone's journey. Thanks for the review, and too bad about your recent stomach flu. Maybe you should have had the Scotch to kill any infection!
I had the same reaction as you when I first tasted this one : just wonderful ! I also tasted the Lagavulin 8 year old (48%), very good! You should give it a try sometime.
It tastes like dirty sea water, old lobster shell, and antiseptic...and I love it. This is coming from a guy that would rather fist fight Mike Tyson and George Foreman than get close to seafood. Go figure.
Lagavulin16 = barbecued ribeye steak wrap in Canadian maple beacon by the beach looking at miss universe in a bikini, need I say more?
haha, well said Sir
Nice to see you back. Your best review so far. Fun. Not had Lagavulin yet but will at some point.
Thanks, as said in the video, I highly recommend it :)

Haha, alcohol made the issues worse, I just had to wait it through. Luckily I only had the issues for one day.
Cant drink Laga without thinking about Nick Offerman :D
very correct :D

An iconic Islay dram! 😋😍🥃!!
