    These worms sure do love a range of foods and different food types definitely have different benefits.
    I find that feeding them grains helps them lay more eggs, with rice being a real winner.
    Some pro worm farmers use organic pellets that are high in vitamins and proteins.
    However, they can be expensive, where the coffee from the cafe is free.

      Hi Kathy, coffee is awesome and 100% free from anywhere that sells coffee.
      It's definitely an undervalued free resource that just ends up in landfills. If you just have a small amount, put it in the same spot for a while and it will attract the worms...Earthworms love it too!

    Hello Marty, I am interested to use coffee grounds to add futility to my garden, hence watching your informative video on the subject. It gives me a starting point to work towards using my successful worm farm, compost bin and garden in general. Over the years I have continued to add large amounts of organic matter, and now want to start using the excess amounts of coffee grounds from cafes in town. I saw coffee grounds at a cafe yesterday, to give away for free, and thought why not start using this product usually thrown out. Thank you for your video, it is very good.

    • @martysgarden
      @martysgarden  5 лет назад +2

      That's a tricky one. The more exposed the outdoor compost is, the less attack it gets from Mice ect. Because they don't like to risk being out in the open.
      The other way is I cover mine with shade cloth,,,keeps the birds out.
      Snails and slugs don't like the coffee grounds as it's too rough.
      Hope that helps.

      Look at getting your carbon to nitrogen correct, coffee grounds and kitchen scraps are counted as nitrogen,,leaves, sticks, bark, paper are carbon. Hope that helps? Please consider subscribing to my channel if you havent already as I am sure you will like the up and coming content. Thanks Marty😀

    Coffee grounds are definitely excellent for composting. A great combo are leaves and coffee grounds for composting. The leaves and coffee break down and red wrigglers in it love it. I did this last year from around May and my compost heap is basically a heap of worm castings.
    The worms survived the hot dry summer too as I think the heap had the mass a size for the worms to take shelter in, plus the heap never dried out. The heap is in a sheltered area under a large tree and behind a tall hedge so that helps too.
    Once I dumped a bucket of coffee grounds in my worm farm. The worms did not survive it. Your method of spreading out handfuls of grounds is the way to go.

    • @martysgarden
      @martysgarden  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Karl,,,I am about to add some grounds to a pile of grass cuttings I have been collecting. I am making it as a trap to capture free range compost worms that escape my wind rows and farms.
      I find that just a little coffee in the plastic farms is the way to go for sure.
      The method of spreading onto of the pile,,,I do fork it through if the air isn't getting in...but that usually if it's place onto to thick.
      They really do love it,,and as you said great for composting.
      Thanks heaps for watching and sharing here with me and the community.

    I agree coffee is great, although this limits the diversity of nutrients. There should be much more nutrients than just 5. 100 seems better. Add ash, add newspaper soaked in water and stirred into mush, add bones. Leaves crushed. But the best thing you can add is compost! Make it their bedding

    Do you think worms produce "more" castings, if they eat the coffee grounds? I know coffee tends to move things along the digestive track in humans. Does it do the same thing with worms? Do they eat more and produce more castings?

    • @martysgarden
      @martysgarden  3 года назад +1

      That's a great question Jo. It's the nitrogen in the coffee that kicks things off. That's why some farmers including me coat their worm food in coffee grounds. I coat and soak my egg cartons in it and it really speeds things along. Sets of the fungi too! Check out the rest of my latest videos and you will see it all in action. 😀
