And away we go!
Bit of a quick visual correction on my part: the 8x8 dish at 2:52 is much older than Life On Mars and wasn't made for the theme specifically. I think I included it in the shot because it lent itself well to the "sci fi stylings" comment, but this is an instance where the script and the visuals somewhat clash. Just wanted to clear that up!

Shout out to Cheesey for owning 60-70% of the world's supply of sand purple pneumatic tube connector pieces.
He'll never get my 30%!! 😆
He's still speedrunning sand red 100%
don't you think it's a bad idea to accumulate so much rare pieces in one hands? they can be lost in one accident forever
@@maxxnaz what are you planning
@@maxxnazi want in
it's crazy that you can have a complete collection of every brick of a color and have it all fit comfortably on your photography set
Discontinued colors that there are just a handful of parts for: Sand purple, Light Violet, Light Purple, Medium Violet, Violet, Blue-Violet, Dark Blue-Violet,…it’s almost like there’s a pattern here. 🤔
[ok, there are also several non-purple colors that have a similarly sparse number of parts: metallic green, medium lime, light lime, medium green, very light gray, very light bluish gray, sky blue, aqua, light orange, sand red. But the purples have been hit particularly hard on this front, especially when you consider that Purple has also been long-discontinued, though it at least had a modest selection of parts in a fair number of sets.]
@@natbarmorechrome green and chrome blue are very easy to collect!
Right?? Definitely makes this a more viable video topic than something like "Blue: Complete Collection". 😂
Anakin Skywalker: "I don't like Sandpurple. It's odd....yet pretty....and you can't seem to find it anywhere."
My friend just threw away his Zam Wessel. Helped him clean out his garage and found some pieces on the ground, he let me keep them. They were for that set. He told me he threw away LEGO the day prior. There’s currently a historic and rare figure at the county landfill. RIP
💀💀💀
How is he still your friend?
I'm going to excavate that landfill like they did for the Atari ET games ⛏
I got my Zam Wessell minifigure 11 years ago, I still have it, I won't sell it or throw it away, it's one of my most valuable lego minifigures I own in my lego collection
I found a Zam weasel at the thrift store the other day. $3 in excellent quality. Probably my happiest find.
That's a huge score for you! She's worth a lot more nowadays!!
You know LEGO banked hard on marketing Life on Mars, when they sent some of the Martian minifigures to literal space and back aboard the International Space Station. And the bus tour helps too.
Yooooo!!!!
And the Life on Mars play
You know, solid props to you! It's rare that I find a Lego channel that acknowledges that wear and tear on second-hand parts means that a particular piece was well-enjoyed by it's target audience, and did it's job as a toy!
Thanks! Wear & tear is a badge of honour for a toy - it did its job well! 😊
YES YES YES YES
The B-roll in this episode is actually beautiful
Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun creating it. 😊
BEST LEGO COLOR
Love seeing deep dives into colors like these videos and would love to see more!! Super impressed with the editing and life brought to each video, keep it up! Big fan!
You're a huge inspiration to me! Cool seeing you on my favourite channel.
Thanks so much Chris! Keep on rocking! ❤️
Don't forget that we very nearly got a full wave of classic space sets in sand purple! There still exists a photo of the prototypes from around 1989 I believe.
I can never forget - that image lives rent free in my brain. 😭
Got a few Sand Purple piecesfrom a Goodwill lot. Such an interesting color. I wish they kept it
Wow, I think I was one set away from also owning every single sand purple piece, which would have been an accidental collection instead of an intentional one. Great video, these dives into niche Lego part/color/theme details are always a fun time!
Haha, this is definitely one colour where an accidental collection is quite possible - especially if you were buying LEGO in 2001/02. 😆
Slugger is the type of guy to yap about a specific color in a toy line for 8 minutes, make it entertaining, and casually make amazing stop-motion detailed Lego animation to go along with it. The fact a slug can make all those sets without hands truly is dedication.
Once again, an unreasonably high production video about a color of plastic block. Thank you, Slug man, I love these quality videos
Thank you! 😊
Another SOS, another banger! The sand color collection is beatiful 👽
You know, now that LEGO is more established. I feel like they could bring a lot of these colors back no sweat. Sand red, sand purple, violet and spring green would fit very well into themes like Friends.
Do it LEGO! You know you want to!
I used to love Life on Mars so much as a kid, I always wanted to recreate the map from Lego racers 2, but I barely had any bricks to do that lol. For me, these aliens are the best ones Lego has made.
That was the best level, for sure! 😊
thank you for this video oh joyous slug
Hey I know of at least one other instance of sand purple! Duplo figure Spud from Bob the Builder has a sand purple torso, and if you buy it, you’ll notice the head is a strange color as well… the head is one of only 3 know instances of an EXTREMELY rare color Lego calls Light Orange (different to the color bricklink calls light orange). This color is not recognized by bricklink as all 3 times it showed up was as a part of a pre assembled character.
That's wild!! I'll keep my eyes open for that figure!
Life on Mars is such a neat theme. The builds remind me a lot of classic Exploriens stuff, but the colors keep it very cool and modern. More sand colors!!
I’m glad you’re having fun with the new m-tron guy slugger :-)
It was a lot of fun to animate! So fluid in its motions!
The Life on Mars series was my favorite as a child. The unique details, amazing colors and the setting with non-aggressive aliens was very cute and inspiring. 🥰 Thanks for the video, Slugger!
That little stop motion move Zam performs was such an unnecessary, yet immensely satisfying addition. I can really feel the passion behind your work.
Thank you! I thought it would make for a flashy way to show off the reversable head gimmick. 😊
Sand Colours, my beloved... Thank you for this.
Such a beautiful color. There's a reason my logo consists of a sand color. Sand Lego colors are my absolute favorites!
Also LOL at the Life is a sin translation making it in!
It's so good! 😂
Such an incredible video. The stop motions inserted into these videos elevates them immensely.
New part I missed… two face from the Batman 1 line uses a sand purple face print!
Thanks MayDay! I definitely went back and watched yours again for inspiration. ❤
Interesting detail on the Two Face figure... but does that *really* count as Sand Purple? 😉
I had the Zam Wesell set as a kid. Oh how this brings back memories
Huge ShoutOut to Mike for sending Zam Wesell to you! Very nice, Mike!!
Agreed! Really helped inspire a fun video project!
Zam was one of my first Minifigures, and i still have her! She is well loved!
The only Xalax racer I had growing up was the sand purple and I always thought he was the coolest little guy ever! Great vid, thank you!
Love that animation of the M-Tron astronaut in the corridor!
Thank you! I got really creative with some of the imagery in this video!
Absolutely one of my favorite colors ever
3:29 This turned out good, like REALLY good. Looks so sweet
Thank you! I got really creative with the visuals in this one!
I bought the aero tube hanger for 40 bucks used last year, so glad I did it's awesome :D
That's a steal of a price - congrats!
OH MY GOD, I LOST IT when I saw the thumbnail, I adore this color, it's strange rarity and it's history 💜💜💜
I weirdly really enjoy the fact that it literally has ONE not-overspecified, general-purpose part, being the 1x3 slope, it's just so wacky 🤪
I actually have a small, little dream associated with sand purple. I absolutely love all Lego sand colors, they're my absolute favourite ones. I think that every sand color was released as previously mentioned 1x3 slope brick, so I plan to collect them in all 4 sand colors and then create some sort of bracelet, keyring, you know, some sort of accessory with it. You see it and it's like "if you know, you know".
#LoveSandPurple
That's a great goal to have! ❤️
SUMMER OF SLUG!!! LET'S GO!!!
Why is this so fascinating? I'm legit gripped by it.
Ok, the open theme is such a jam! I'll be singing along every time!
Haha, thank you! I hope you won't get sick of it this summer! 😄
I am obsessed with sand purple and sand red pieces, thanks!
I really hope this channel pops off, the quality of the videos is just next level. Both info and presentation are excellent
glad i could finally support the summer of slug this time around. thanks for greatness as always, slug! :DD
Thank YOU for your support! ❤
I really enjoy the MOCs that appear in single frames of your videos like the one in 3:38
Thank you! ❤️
convenient timing! I was just in a short conversation at bricks and minifigs and we talked about sand purple while digging through bulk
Nice! Perfect timing!
I remember visiting Legoland Billund as a kid and viewing a Life on Mars live action show. I didn't understand a single word as I didn't speak Danish, still don't, but it was a great experience.
That's so cool! There's a recording of it here on RUclips somewhere. 😮
I really believe that the only reason I remember who Zam Wessel is today, a short lived character in a movie I never think about, is because of the color of the minifigure. It stood out so much to me as a kid and even though I never had this set, it never left my mind. Crazy how a rare color can have that much impact.
Building not exclusively but WITH sand purple seems like one of more creative challenges you can have with Lego :D
Didn't expect to be this early, but it is definitely to cool to finally see the color of sand purple examined in greater detail. But in spite of it only appearing in four sets, it actually isn't the rarest color that Lego elements have been produced in. One of the contenders for that title may be a shade known as "bright bluish-violet"-which was only used for 35 pieces comprising a Technic Star Wars figure of Jango Fett (8011). Which was released in April of 2002 in the runup to the release of "Attack of the Clones" on May 16 of that year. But in relation to the Life on Mars theme, it was the first theme to include parts in sand red and sand blue, but sand green was actually first introduced in mid-November of 2000 in a "Sculptures" set depicting the Statue of Liberty (3450). Even though that set was only available directly through Lego themselves. Of note, this model may be somewhat inaccurate in that regard given how the real-world statue is more of a "seafoam green" color, despite having a copper color when it was first gifted in 1886. But that's a different story. There is also a metallic version of sand blue, if you are familiar?
That's right! I believe metallic sand blue is used on some Star Wars droids if I recall correctly?
@@RRSlugger Right. It first appeared in the Technic Super Battle Droid (8012) and a minifigure version of it included in the first Republic Gunship (7163) from 2002, with every piece in it being set-exclusive. This color would've been exclusive to the Star Wars theme, if not for it being used for a minifigure-scale sword in 2004 as part of the "Knights' Kingdom II" theme. It was also used for some constraction-scale parts in 2005 (only in 8794) before the color was phased out entirely.
Slugger Versus Mayday... FIGHT!
Great vid, feels cool to see that you have a Completed Colour Collection of something! :)
He'd probably kick my butt! 😆
Man, the Life on Mars aesthetic was amazing. And I mean the advertising!
Life on Mars was my favorite system theme other than Rock Raiders, the only mainline set i didnt have was the tube base. So glad to see it represented more!
I love Life On Mars! Hope to one day do an in depth series on it! 😊
Sand red, it is... just beautiful
The areo tube hanger was my fave set as a kid. I saved up to buy it my self and it was one of the few sets I ever rebuilt after it fell apart lol. I had to reaquire it as an adult to feature in my current set up. But luckily I still had most of the Sand Purple elements around in my parts bins. I used them to help make a Jokermobile including that engine part!
Only recently found your channel, but I enjoy it so much. Nothing better than retro Lego. And I loke your „slow“ style, makes the content good to relax
Thank you, I'm glad your enjoying it! Crazy to think that I'm considered "slow" for RUclips standards - I feel like I'm talking a mile a minute sometimes! 💀
We need sand purple, it was a cool color that sadly didn't live long
Holy shit that hallway shot!!
Haha, I got really creative with some of the space imagery in this one!
I have specific memories with part 30586, it was used in the roller doors for my first fire station set as a child, and i always found it to be such an interesting shape. It's cool to know it debud in such a cool colour
I found my Zam Wesell when I retrieved my old LEGO earlier this year! Probably the highest ticket minifig in the lot, but with some gnarly marks on the head. No regrets lol, well loved indeed.
I have a rail and two slopes in sand purple. It’s awesome to finally know where they came from!
Life on mars is one of my favourite themes from my childhood. I got into lego just as it was being discontinued and so it wasn't until later that I got a nearly complete collection via ebay.
part 30586 is definitely one of my favorite pieces, I enjoy the use of system pieces that can creat mechanics, like the garage door type things or the ones that allow sliding plates, I own a few in light bluish grey, if not more, I haven't done much in the way of going through and cataloguing my sets and what's special about them
I got mizar at a minifigure kiosk at a mall as kid because I liked teal, and I always referred to the sand purple as “lavender”. I didnt realize how rare it was until now. I think I also had that racer so maybe that made sand purple seem more common to me. Great video as always!
Slug friend, your videos are GREAT.
Thank you! ❤️
Fantastic video slugger!! I never knew much about thid amazing color!! So mystical!! And as always, your amazing quality and camerawork make it 2000x better!!
Thank you! I had a lot of fun taking the photos for this one!
3:30 ooo lovely Space Odyssey style work with the colored lights!!
Thank you! All done with coloured paper! 😊
@@RRSlugger Oh so you put various sheets of color paper as a filter in front of the light?
@@evilscientistrecords As paper backdrops behind the models - then the regular white light bounces off those and bathes the models in a corresponding glow. 🙂
Such a beautiful colour
yesss! maybe this video is a sign i should finally pick up some of those scala/belville colors...
Those shots of the sci-fi doorway and the new space cmf are awesome! Love your channel so much
Thank you! 😊
Educational and entertaining as always :)
Such an interesting color! I might have to buy myself a Life on Mars set now just to obtain it 😅
summer of slug patreon is so worth it the minecraft server is quite cool
Hands down best LEGO color next to Dark Turquoise. No debate here!
Loving the "summer of slugg" series bro. 😁👍
Good to see you ended up picking up at least the Torso and Legs from the M-tron cmf after your thoughts about it in a Sluggin' Around video.
A fan of the channel sent the whole minifigure to my PO Box! 😊
With a few modifications, I’m really happy with it now!
That comment about the Rock Raiders helmet (though I know it as the _Power Miners_ helmet - goes to show which sets I grew up with) really reminded me how little that helmet is used. I'd love to see it in other colors. The last set to use it was a DC set in 2018, where is appeared in red, so they hopefully still have the mold...
I had no idea they made a red one!! I need to track one down! 😮
I hope it comes out in more colors like black, orange, green, yellow, etc. It’s just such an awesome helmet
@@RRSlugger The set it appears in is 70921, Harley Quinn Cannonball Attack. The cheapest listings on Bricklink for the red helmet are $2-3.
The sand colors are my favorite lego colors ❤
I really enjoy these kinda videos focusing on ONE niche colour, though it’s a colour I really like, I’d really wanna see it used on some friends sets.
I do wonder what made lego keep sand blue/sand green around though 🤔. If I recall sand red is brittle so that made sense…have a good day Slugger!, this was a solid start to S.O.S 🐌
Let's gooooo! I adore old Lego sand colors!!
Life on Mars may have had the most unique and intriguing colour palette of any Lego theme, in my opinion!
But if i had to choose.... gotta be sand red
Easily one of my favorite colors they've ever done, just something so oddly pleasing about it. Really hope it gets brought back someday!
Crazy, I absolutely owned that set with zam and the Martian set, I guess I need to go get my Legos for my parents place
I love my Zam. Such a beautiful color. It's funny you feature cheesy in a sand purple video the day he releases a video featuring the sand red Professor Lockhart.
Funny how that happens! 😄
I don’t like Star Wars anymore but Mike is the man.
Firstly, can confirm, I’ve never owned a single life on mars set.
Second, when combined with a stud ended 3l axle, a 24 tooth gear, a single stud, and a silver part 26007, it should be known that part 30535 actually makes for an excellent Steam Turbine Engine.
And third, I currently own absolutely zero sand purple elements, shocking, I know.
Good job as always Slugger, good job.
Rockatoa, Brickticks out!
what a perfect evening
summer of slug starts, i just ended work. and my last parts for the mechtropolis build have arrived!
Heck yeah! Enjoy the build!
Sand purple is a very unique color, and unlike the other variants of basic colors, I think it's removal took away a very exotic option away. I understand it was not used much, but I think it was under utilized rather than of little use.
Such a great intro song mate
Lovely video idea! Is this a new bucket list for you? Collecting every element of the early 2000s retired colors? Like sand red, violet, etc?
Hahaha, oh goodness I hope not! Don't put those awful thoughts in my head! 😆
THIS is why we summer of slug
I always loved Life on Mars, one of my fav themes growing up, and sand purple being such a prominent color in in the theme definitely endeared the color to me. I've always wanted a sand purple bionicle, whether it be a bohrok, a rahkshi, or visorak, I just always wished we got a bionicle in that color.
I just found out I have every sand purple piece apart from Zam thanks to this video.
Hey, nice!! It's such a cool colour.
Slugger: *life on mars love*
Maniac4bricks and Me: real
In all jokes. Who better to team with than the other 2 life on mars fanatics. Great video slugger it is always nice to see the best color shown again. If there is any color worth coming back. It is sand purple
I’m actually proud to say I have multiple Sand Purple parts, even though I don’t own a lot of older parts. Yet Sand Purple is one of those pieces
Love it.
LEGO, BRING ME SAND PURPLE, AND MY LIFE IS YOURSSS
Keep your collection in Safe and stay close to it, they can smell plastic for miles 😶
Edit: great video slugger when you upload a new video it's automatically a good day, thanks slugger 😎👍
Never had a Life on Mars set (a friend did), but I do remember all the TV commercials. I loved the Bounty Hunter Pursuit set, though. Maybe this is a sign to dig it out of storage
Mr slugger is such an insane RUclipsr
