I'm with you on the tools. I've been using the same off-brand tools for a few decades and I'm almost 60. I was buying Harbor Freight when they were having truckload sales at the local National Guard Armory back in the 80s and 90s before they had stores in my area.
I am going on 76 and go the the gym 8 days a week with 380 reps of several machines. Some of my tools are 50 plus years old/ Less than 1% Snap on. Back in the day there was Snap on and Craftsman, Many choices now with acceptable quality.
A little unrelated, but I found a 330xi with the sport package last week, the girl was looking for a tow company to buy it and take it, instead I bought it for $1,000 fixed it and now it’s mine haha. Wouldn’t have been possible without you, SO THANK YOU MAN!!
Whatever I didn’t learn about e36/e46 from RUclips I learnt from doing exactly this. Best part is you can take pictures of different stuff for later when you want to see how things changed between models and years. I sucks that a lot of decent cars I see are destined to become beer cans. I feel like saving all the BMWs lol
Love the video bro. I used to go to a few in CT way back in the day, there used to be lots of e30's and e34's, a few e10's as well. In like 2004, 2005.
5:28. No reason to bring something to lay on. Just grab a floor mat or a trunk mat. 14:33. I NEVER cut the harness for a taillight. Just disconnect the plug. The plug won't be used when the taillight is installed in the next car. One more thing. GREAT VIDEO!
WOW! I needed that very same part for my e39 540i and had to go to LKQ for it. I couldn't find it anywhere locally online and like you said, the only place available was like Croatia. So I pulled it myself. I too didn't have the right part so this guy came by with his mini sledgehammer and banged it out for me (I gave him a few bucks). There are guys who can pull parts for you for money but it's always good to have your own tools because you never know. I miss going to Pick and Pulls. They're one of my favorite places.
Hey, this is my go-to yard in Charlotte! I took those pedals lol. That black Volvo behind you near the first E39 was actually my cousin’s car that he sold a few years ago.
I have 5 LKQs near me and have alerts set for all. The trick for airbags is to wrap them in a rag or two and put them at the bottom of your packed tool bag. I would happily buy them but they won't sell them. Lots of time for pigtails and small stuff they don't even charge. Also reassemble things, I had a 3-piece trim piece I reassembled, one large plastic trim piece is cheaper than 3 small trim pieces.
I go to pick and pull here in California and you never know what your going to find. I once found a complete black interior for a 1997 BMW e30 in great condition. Seats alone were going for $250 each. 😀
We were replacing the tie rod end anyways, we specifically went for that sleeve, which isn't available anywhere. Most people that sell used spindles also have that pressed in sleeve missing.
We have a local Pick-a-part in Fredericksburg, VA. Haven't been there in a few months, but after seeing this vid, I am starting my list of items to grab next time I go lol. The yard I go to usually has a bunch of E46's available, but they don't have a system in place where we can get notified when a new car comes in. My friends and I just check the online inventory before we go, and usually end up finding more than what is listed online. Great video on junkyards and pick-a-parts. Good idea to bring the wheelbarrow with you just in case you have to haul parts haha.
I was at LKQ this week, getting Honda Parts for my daughter's car. It was hot too. I looked at all the BMWs, nothing good. I am going to keep my e39 manual as long as I can. It made in July of 2003, so it was one the last to come off the line. I just wish that is was 6 speed but they did not put them in 6 "pingers".
@@drewdavis239 I am sure it does..... And the e46, e60 too, and probably the e39 with v8 would too. Maybe when it is time replace the clutch, that can be looked at but until then, I will live with the 5 Speed.
Went to local wrecker for a quick in and out small items on a E39 listed on their site only to find a E39 540 / 6 420G sitting there not listed on their site.............crap there went my day, pulled a full 6 speed conversion in 4 hours >.
same as you don,t buy over priced tools like you have some cheap tools and some good tools but if they get the job done and you out of trouble only if you use them few times im happy with that .
Excellent video I been with lkq since 2016 an yes very cheap parts an u can find so many but here in Florida in these days there not good like before..
Pick-a-part yards are the best place to learn how to work on your car. Find your same model of car, and you can do anything to it to learn how it comes apart. I have a 2004 saturn vue and my local jalopy jungle has over 15 of them on any given day, so i go there and fiddle with them and find parts. There are a few items they charge too much for considering its off a well used car, but other than that the prices are great.
I got the rigid set for the same price and for $300 bucks you cant beat it. I abuse my tools and besides a broken tab on a battery pack which is 100% my fault, they still work like new.
Not just an east coast thing to charge admission. I have to pay $2 at every yard ive gone to in the Denver, CO area. Also, i feel the same about all/most car people at the yards. I’ve allowed others to use my tools in a pinch to pick their parts.
I live in California and regularly attend Pick n Pulls and LKQ Pick a Part. All of these salvage yards have a $2 entry fee. So not an east coast thing 👍🏽
I bet it was, the LKQ close by seems to have quite a few euro cars in their inventory as well. Regardless, most of these pull a parts have good turnover on their inventory
This is true!! And btw I replaced my expansion tank today thanks to your video on the cooling system. I may have you look my e46 over just to give me some pointers in the right direction
yo that’s the same exact pull a part I go to for my e46 ripped the valve cover off one of those lol sadly it turned out to have a hairline crack in it 😕 nice find on the m3 steering wheel though
Telltale sign that it's a 528 would be the 16" BBS style 5's. Unless it was a sport pack car with the 17" or 18" style 5's, the most common wheel that is 528 specific is the 16" style 5. Just a tip from a bimmerhead who's been working on/ owning them for over 25 years 😎👍
I went to pullapart and got several parts for my last car. In the end, that car ended up in a junk yard. Now people will possibly get the parts I took from other cars and put on their cars.
people usually strap the engine to their back with seat belts and carry it to the front. i'm kidding. sort of. my local u pull it has a day when you get everything that you can carry for free. two guys carried a motor and sure enough they got it for free. now they probably died when they got home from internal bleeding but it was a sight to see. they were carrying their tools as well.
I've been looking for natural brown sport seats for my e46, the ones I have the leather is really hard and darker that usual, it's difficult to find them these days.
Nice precise tools are good to have, but if you aren't subjecting everything to daily hard use, hobbyist-grade stuff is usually quite sufficient, and the Harbor Freight cheapies of things you don't use much are usually a lot better to have than not. Usually you want to focus the best quality on things that need to be good under lots of stress. Anything else just needs to not-suck. (I've had to rebuild a lot of tools since I relocated and it's a combination of old stuff brought along or found in pawnshops, often-cheaper sets of things for completeness, and random Autozone things to fill in gaps that turned up. You don't have to throw thousands at tools. That only becomes worth it if your time gets that expensive. :)
So, you left the airbag there? There is no chance to buy complete steering wheel wit it on a salvage yard? I know people buying seats with airbags inside...
Do you guys have a link to the guy that makes that bushing in Russia or at least what it’s called I can’t seem to find it online. Thank you love the vids 😊
At our pull a part you can put in what your looking for. But before you even get there the part you want is already gone because of the employee s telling their friends
I found 5 $20 bills in an overhead sunglass holder once at the U-pull it.
Good penetrating oil is your friend when pulling parts off junk cars
I'm always like, "Poor BMWs" when at the junk yard
Look at the BMW rims in front of it. Then look at the tires.
It's like an obvious mystery game you already know the ending too
I'm with you on the tools. I've been using the same off-brand tools for a few decades and I'm almost 60. I was buying Harbor Freight when they were having truckload sales at the local National Guard Armory back in the 80s and 90s before they had stores in my area.
Been debating on going to the scrap yard this year for the first time to look for some goodies, now you convinced me to go tomorrow.
Do it!!
Call first. Guarantee they have no BMWs
@@Truthseaaker They have many lol
Junk yard is always a good day out even if you aren’t after anything specific. great vid as usual 👍
Thanks Harry. I agree with you, I love being around cars in general whether its a boneyard or a concourse event lol
Indeed! Only gearheads will know the enjoyment of going to a pick and pull!
Amazing video, I always go to the junk yard and just look for all the Bmws
Thank you! I love speculating what might have happened to some of the cars and its always to take stuff apart lol
I am going on 76 and go the the gym 8 days a week with 380 reps of several machines. Some of my tools are 50 plus years old/ Less than 1% Snap on. Back in the day there was Snap on and Craftsman, Many choices now with acceptable quality.
Rigid tools are top of the line !!!! Nothing about these tools are to be ashamed of !!!
I've been trying to find that creeky front drivers noise forever!!! Feel like I won the lottery with this video

Nice find guys! This bring back memories of finding bunch of loose change in the pick-a-part cars, lol!
Hahaha thats a good tip as well! Im sure you can scavenge around and collect a couple bucks in change to pay the admission fees lol
Man, I do this and normally get $8-$15 bucks. I won't get the pennies though. 🤑🤑🤑🤑
Im always surprised that there are so many BMWs in the junkyard .

Thats an amazing find! I didn't have time to go to many pick and pulls while I was in Cali, hopefully I can get out to some next time I am there.
You're a braver man than I am. I would have bought a tie rod end and called a day. Ditto for the shifter bushing.
We were replacing the tie rod end anyways, we specifically went for that sleeve, which isn't available anywhere. Most people that sell used spindles also have that pressed in sleeve missing.
I had a new car since almost 5 years but i miss those days when i pull out some parts it was really fun.bro i luv ur videos keep up good work 💪
Always a good day when you see an e39 with a m3 wheel. I bee line to every single one i see.

That is a really nice pick-a-part. My LKQ is dirty AF. It is located near cement factories so the air is foul all the time.
I'm not even a huge car guy and this video was hella entertaining 😂

Bring burble wrap and or Paper Bags for put tail lights etc in.
Out here in SF bay area, E46/e39/e38 fill up our yards, I saved so much $$$ on parts.
Looks like a part any machine shop could turn in about 45 minutes, or get yourself a small lathe you could sell this pa rt to others.

I"m glad you said you use harbor freight tools, I think as a mechanic you make the tools not tools the mechanic. Thanks for keeping real.
I wished if Australia had these sort of yards.
Just a head's up, most yards don't allow jacks. Good to bring one just in case the do allow it, but check first.

What’s the location for this salvage yard
None of my local u pull it's have alert feature and only one has a public inventory but the biggest part of the fun is the hunt so I don't mind

In defence of Harbor Freight tools vs SnapOn... Pittsburgh tools have a lifetime warranty too.
I use the "Row 52" app to find specific vehicles at Pick-n-pull yards across the country. Not a sponsor. LoL.
Ive been paying admission fees in SoCal since 2005 man! Mostly Ecology now LKQ. It just depends on the yard.

You can salvage an engine with water that got inside as long as you don’t turn it.. drain it and run oil through it a few times and you’ll be fine
