- Vocal Coach Reacts To Luther VanDross | A House is not a Home | Live | Ken Tamplin
Luther Vandross was truly a master of mixed voice. His ability to move between chest voice and head voice was so seamless you never which one he was actually in.
Luther spent much of the beginning of his career singing background for many well known artists including David Bowie, Donna Summer, Bette Midler, and more.
Later in his career, he became lead singer with the group Change, which in 1980 produced their debut album which went on to be certified gold.
He would eventually leave the group and start a solo career where he went on to sell 35 million records and win 8 Grammys.
Today I’ll be reacting to a performance of Vandross singing “A House Is Not A Home” which had previously been recorded by Dionne Warwick who is attendance for his performance.
I hope you enjoy the video and please make sure to share your feedback on the performance!

One of greatest male singers of all time, if there's such a thing as a Mount Olympus of the voice, he surely would be there
Jorge Luis Jones ❤️
Absolutely...Luther!!!
The Greatest Male Singer of all time
@@kentamplin excellent analysis & comments Ken / agree with u 💯 % ! He's on my mentors list same as you- for ur krazy skills !!
On the R & B side, I have pebo # 2. His voice was silky also
Luther was absolutley brilliant!!!! Saw him 9 times in concert and he never disappointed his fans!
That's great to hear!
@@kentamplin ...i too have seen him about 5 times...it was such a strange...almost ...supernatural thing...his technique was so perfect..and the crowd reaction was so intense..but you could easily see in the large video monitors..that he was so disconnected from the performance..it was like he was thinking of a cheese grits recipe in his head...he was not there...while thousands of people were going slowly insane...i love him...he is one of the best...and it was pure technique...from someone who was a cultural phenomenon...
My favorite male vocalist, went to many concerts.
I saw him in London twice. First time was the circular stage in the middle of Wembley. Soooo awesome. Still love him ❤
@@florencerice7297
I was there too, one of the concerts in the round. Amazing memories 🤩
I saw him twice when he toured in London but I can’t recall the exact dates, must’ve been between 1984 and 1988. Can you remember which year you saw him?
He died way too young. .what a God given talent
That is true! What a loss.
Luther's voice is SILK! It's absolutely smooth and beautiful.
😊
The world won't experience another a voice like Luther until after the next cataclysm and humans rebuild civilization again! So blessed to be alive and have the opportunity to hear it!
That voice just melted the cheese on my macaroni 🧀
Haha! I know!
That's real talent that really doesn't exist anymore. Old R&B & Motown had many talented artists.
One of the best, Robert!
That they did, back then everybody HAD to be able to sing well and had real talent!
Was worth to listen to the end. This is probably Luther’s greatest performance imo. The greatest silky voice of all time. Just makes you warm inside and out. And the man knew it!
He was great!
Ken, Luther Vandross had so much quality in his voice, it's very informative how you also explain the techniques he applyed and there's alot to learn from your reactions to these great singers!!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Vocality!
He could have been an opera singer with his range. Masterful singer
Absolutely, Peaceandrice!
He was such a king.
One of the best, Soaribb!
I’m man enough to admit he had such an incredible tone. I used to listen to his records In the 80s and 90s and just admire the great tunes and vocal dexterity. He was the master of chill out, feel good music. So amazing was one of my favourites.
One of the best, theonlyredspecial!
I could listen to Luther for eternity. His voice is a fine tuned instrument. His range, ability to render a song and convey raw emotion are attributes not given to many.
Beautiful!
Hey buddy, can’t cut the Luther off before he’s done singing!!!! Sacrilege !!🤨
My apologies.
yeah! That's a no, no.
Lol. I died!!! I had to go find the video
All hail the king!
I agree completely...he needs to listen to Luther and then talk
It's interesting to hear the technical reasons Luther is a gift from above ~ but my Heart Felt it the moment he began to sing. My body gets covered in goosebumps, my eyes fill with tears at the Pure Beauty of this man and his voice. The song itself is a gem ~ Luthers multi faceted voice makes it sparkle, shine and glow. I Love this man. R.I.P. Mr. Vandross ~ ~ ~ you are missed.
He is such a legend. So sad he's no longer with us.
Frank Raffa ❤️
His voice is effortless & so smooth , no strain or trying too hard , id love to hold an audience in the palm of my hand like that , until then I will just have to watch him on repeat ! .
😊
A phenomenal singer ! And he had the power to hold you in the palm of his hand with that voice.
Absolutely, Steve!
If butter was a voice it'd be Luther's voice. Breath for days and nothing on stage but him, a mic, and a damn curtain.
His voice was like sexy butter. What a force to behold
Like two sticks of Land o' Lakes buddah.
Sexy butter, I saw that in the dairy section at the grocery store the other day.
@BallTistic Screecher too funny
I love sexy butter🤣🤣🤣
@@AndySaenz I bet it was expensive 🔥🔥
This is straight up some of the most beautiful male vocals in pop/rock I have heard. How did I miss it all this time! Thanks so much for this.
😊
His range reminds me of Whitney Houston. She's generally considered by experts to be the greatest singer of all time (certainly female). It would be interesting to learn whom experts consider to be the top 5 male singers of all time. And Luther Vandross has to be in that conversation.
👍
You’re speaking of popular vocalists among white people. No, I am not making this a race issue. It’s just a culture issue.
Yes,. Whitney was amazing. Absolutely amazing. However, you need to listen to Rachelle Farrell, Lalah Hathaway, Ledisi. They aren’t pop artists. They are strictly R&B artists. Not even hip hop.
On the male side, I would advise you to listen to Kurt Ellington, Eric Benet. Prank Bryson.
For more “popular” singers, a prime Mariah could give Whitney a run for her money all day. And, the immaculate Celine Dion in her prime could definitely sing with any and everyone.
Never have I hear someone dissect, in such an informative manner, the technique involved in the way Luthor VanDross presented. I knew I was hear something special in his songs but didn't know how to qualify it. Chers!!!
Awesome! Thanks!
Luther was a phenomenal singer! When he was live,it was like listening to the record ,he sounded that good.
Absolutely!
We don't have talent like this anymore. Classic
😊
"He draws you into his sound.." BOOM!! 💥💥 You nailed it! Lemme put it this way: if his voice were a musical instrument, it'd be a cello.. ✊️✊️😁😁
He was giving a tribute to Ms. Dionne Warwick during this performance with one of Ms. Warwick's original classics. He cited her as his greatest musical influence.
As well, I am not inclined to music but to my ears, their singing technique like the pauses, phrasing and dynamics are so similar.
Thanks listening!
One of the greatest singing voices ever..man or woman...he’s right there with them
On David Bowie's Young American you can definitely hear Luther's distinctive voice.Great reaction!
There is never gonna be another singer like Luther. What a GIFT he gave to make millions and millions to laugh, cry, sing, dance and especially SMILE... Incredible!!
One of my favorite male voice Love Luther V.
So do I! 😊
Oh, you need to see his version of "A Change Gonna Come LIve". LUTHER is one of the best male vocalists ever.. Its a shame not many vocal coaches online react too often to these great R&B/Soul singers, as they have a LOT to teach.
😊
Alot of proof in Luthers singing!
Sure enough is!
Luther had one of the smoothest and most beautiful tenor voices ever. He's truly unforgettable.
😊
Luther Vandross was TNT. Tone and technique. Combined and its explosive.
Well said!
Omg you did react! Amazing!
I'm glad you liked it, xXSpikeXx24553!
Luther Vandross is a supreme vocal master I had a chance to see him live in concert he comes out of his dressing room singing he doesn't wait until he gets to the stage it's beautiful to see that ❤️
How great!
Oooh! Luther! So glad to see this. Great rundown and explanation. Thanks!
P.S. Ken, if you see this, would you please consider analyzing this performance? ruclips.net/video/K-X1g-aEeNc/видео.html
Thanks, L!
My daughter and I happened to be driving through Atlanta when Luther passed away. They played non stop Luther on the radio, I really heard his vocals like I never did before. And I thought to myself now his voice is immortilized for all of time to hear.
Gone too soon.
Dont care what anyone has to say about it, but Luther is and will always be the greatest vocalist ever. he can't be matched. As you said, a mix master!
He was wonderful.
@@kentamplin Truly and hole-heatedly Fantastic and absolutely unique. They're will never be another Luther Vandross.. You are missed, but your incredible art will forever live on. Thanks for sharing Ken. It was a great demonstration!
Couldn't help but smile the entire time. Luther always has that effect for me! Unbelievably beautiful voice. Thanks for covering it, Ken!
Shaving Seagull 😊
he would pull out and put in his riffs whenever he wanted to. We saw him live twice and he could hold an audience of thousands in the palm of his hand.
I saw him once when in USA.
Opening act was Sinbad.
Love me some Luther 😍
Wow! What a show!
@@kentamplin thats the show i followed for 3 weeks.... !!!!!! Lifetime experience !!
No one and I mean no one could sing a love song like Luther. He could sing the lunch menu and have you in tears. I was blessed enough to have seen him in concert many times. And that voice was as powerful and beautiful in person. He is very much missed.
😊
Luther!!!! Ken, I wish you’d played the entire clip because there were so many ‘Lutherisms;’ especially at the end. 🎤 Luther Vandross was a master vocalist who was hypnotic and did vocal gymnastics. (I admit, I was surprised that you’re a Luther fan but of course….you love GREAT singers….period) 🎶
Thank You for this reaction. Luther, you are loved and missed.
tigerback ❤️
Much gratitude for this breakdown Ken. It's perplexed me for years, and I feel like I can appreciate even more now. I suspect that Luther was a singers singer, and that us mortals dont have a vocabulary to understand his mastery.
also, i love singers that are good at their craft..where you can really dissect the nuances of what they are doing.
😊
Wow! So happy to hear your reaction! Luther is my favorite singer ever! I raised my thumb before I saw the video!
I remember the first time I saw Luther at the Grand Rex, in Paris thirty years ago, in an intimate concert, with the wonderful Lisa Fischer in the first part. He came to the audience before the concert. I was sitting in front of him and he shook my hand. His voice and presence were awesome, and I knew that no one could surpass him musically in my life.
😊
Great memory to have!
Gone too soon! Luther was one of the greatest, if not the greatest R&B singers of all time. I too could listen to him for hours. One of the closest people I can think of that captures some of that same magic is Michael Tait. Natalie Cole and Michael English in their primes could give him a run for his money too. Thanks for sharing and God Bless bro!
Absolutely, jcoulture43!
A master of R&B and interpretation of a song. I miss him.
oh man.....that dude is just pure gold - spine tinglingly gorgeous - If you are looking at male vocalists across all genres (excluding classical) my GOAT
Saw this performance live. 1st time I ever saw my mother just lose her mind. One of the G.O.A.T. RIP Luther.
Joseph Powell ❤️
You are SO fortunate and I'm so jealous ! lol. I loose my mind just watching the video! Being there may have hospitalized me!!!! Lucky you and your mom!!! 🥰
Woah! Instant goosebumps guaranteed. His voice is magical. 👏
Attila Bata ❤️
I absolutely love Luther ❤️
👍💜😀
Hey Ken happy that you mentioned the legendary iconic Ms. Dionne Warwick!! Luther did a fantastic job on honoring Ms. Warwick that night. He admires Ms. Dionne so much and have stated that she is definitely a pioneer, she is his favorite, and that he have learned so much from her vocally. I can certainly tell that he learned from her as well from his vocal delivery, mannerisms, and performance style. You should do a reaction on Ms. Dionne. Here is a suggestion: "After you/I'll Never Love This way again live 1982" performance. React to second half of video where she sings "Never Love this Again". You will see what I mean 😁😊👍
Thank you for sharing that with us, d oliver!
Aretha Franklin is another big influence up there with DW
Those people are born this way and that is something that you can learn in technical way but that tone and soul sory folks you no what i talking about.Serbia love soul brothers across the ocean.
😊
Mhh and you to mr Tamplin.Serbia is " still loving you".Ha.ha.Peace
my favourite singer of all time
😊
I gave you a thumb up just for reacting to Luther Vandross. He had such an amazing voice. Love when he sang "That's what friends are for" with Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder and Dionne Warwick. Died too young missed so much...
Thanks for watching, Leroyrs!
Great video as always! 😊❤
Thank you, Jasmin. Glad you think so!
Amazing!! Thanks for introduce me this amazing singer !
Happy to!
He is amazing! I have two albums of his and love it! Thanks.
Bet you listen to them tonight!
@@kentamplin certainly!
Luther has a fairy dust voice god sprinkled him with it just like he did Marvin Gaye, Nat King Cole, Karen Carpenter Whitney Huston Barbara Streisand you can’t teach genius it’s god given.
He was wonderful.
I've been waiting for you to react to Luther. Man he was awesome! I'd say the best R and B singer of all time.
Absolutely, Chad!

" nobody does it like Lutha " - The Voice
Sir you're very good at being a voice coach, and being able to recognize and teach the nuances of singing!
Wow, thank you!
Omg! You got my heart! This is one of my favorite songs that Luther sings of all time! I gotta say you are one of the very few that I watch even when you are not reacting to my favorite, people that know me know how rare that is for me! I just love your aura, and your music knowledge is incredible not to mention your voice! Love this channel!
Thanks so much Terri! Love your enthusiasm!
I second ! Ken got me to listen to Beyoncé ! Have mercy on me ! lol Only Ken can do that !
@@flonoiisana4647 😂😂 he has power lol
Thank you!! For us total novices about technique..breath control...etc. Your critique is a Master class. Luther was always Stellar...but...on this...he is in complete control. His presentation is flawless..even Ms.Warwicke is in awe. And the ladies are just meltin'...forget about muscles or classic looks. A man who can "sing" is a treasure. Luther is the entire treasure trove! Again....great overview!
This brought a big smile. for Luther's singing, the marvelous song I'd forgotten about (just love the non-belting type), and fr Ken's appreciation of it all. It also gave me a good feel for the different types of voice, that I realize I do but never knew what they were, or indeed if they were even legitimate. Of course, they're more legit when you're not a amateur like me!
Luther was a boss! Love him!
Oh wow! I love his voice. He was extraordinary.
Yes he was!
Absolutely enjoyed it! All the best!
Awesome! Thanks, John!
Oh I LOVE you for doing that reaction! Because I LOVE Luther Vandross and this version of the song! Thank you so much! :)

I saw him live over a period of 3 weeks, folloving the crew back in 88/89 !,,,,, surely missed !!!!!!!!!
That's awesome, Thea Dora!
Can you imagine what heaven sounds like. He has a wonderful voice gone to soon like many other. What a choir there is in heaven.
😊
I am so glad you reacted to this video. I absolutely adore this performance.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can you do a vocal course on Phillip Bailey. He has maybe the best falsetto.
Thanks for the suggestion.
YEEESSSSS, I 💯 percent agree with you. Phillip Bailey's falsetto is a masterpiece. I'd definitely watch that video.
This song is very personal to me so I started crying (even during your reaction). When my cat noticed, she immediately ran over to me, sat down on just two legs, and used her front paws to wipe away my tears.
This song is another masterpiece by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, sung by the "talent by God" Luther.
Excellent review by you, Ken, and thank you.

I found your Channel by accident but I’m so happy I did. I’m learning so much about the diff singing techniques. You’re great at explaining everything!!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🎊🎉🎊🎉
Happy you're here!
They keep on showing Dionne Warwick because she was the original Singer !!!!
I personally loved this song. Thank you for reacting to it :)
You are very welcome, Overlord!
One of the great things that Luther does is that he'll over anunnciate the consonants with his breathiness. He said he sings songs about falling in love instead of making love. He captures you in the moment. Thanks for the review, Ken.

Luther and David Phelps, are two of my favorites.
Luther definition of a pure singer 14 Platinum Albums.

My favourite artist. Thank you for your reaction. Peace.

ohh yeah, my absolute favorite performance from Luther.
Cool!
I saw Luther live four times - he was flawless. THE Master!

This was a tribute to Dionne Warwick because this is her song, a Burt Bacharach-Hal David composition. He also remade her song "So Amazing" he wrote for her.
