Wtf is she doing with her back good mornings? Nice...
"That's that Louie Simmons shit"
What is this? A good morning?
This is horrendous.
He should've used a different model if he's going to teach form. The lady has poor form m
the girl squat is pretty horrible no????
nasusanus looks like a half squat including a good morning
She's fucking old
she needs to break at the hips before lowring the bar like it was a GM.
Tutorial starts at 6:00.
Not all heroes wear capes
Where is Chase?
Fotis Tsakomakas had an appointment with Odin.
Yeah looks like a good morning
Is this the Starting Strength version of a Box Squat ?
Every box squat demo I have watched or performed has you sit on the box relax the hips and then contract out of the box (static/relaxed overcome by dynamic)
Yeah, the way you mentioned below is how louie Simmons coaches it
Really enjoy Rip's videos. I was under the understanding that the box is just to break the eccentric part of the movement basically turning it into a vertical leg press
the cue is to relax ONLY the hip flexors.. if you're doing it raw even old school westside lifters didn't quite sit back, they kept the back angle slightly forward and had the knees at around toe to 'foot knuckle' level.
yes but obviously you can't do this with a heavy load, you would expose the spine to the load directly if you relaxed your muscles at the bottom. Both variants are "correct" but have vastly different purposes: The one you mention is a way to coach people how to squat. What Rips shows here is a variant for injured lifters or those looking for a a load reduction.
box-good morning ;-)
Wrong. Low bar squat.
@@connorw360 the barbell is high on her back tho
First time ever seeing horrible advice from Mark Riptoe
Why the horizontal back?
video was good until she started doing good mornings
Im coming off a tibial plateau fracture and trying to build back to squatting at least 225 for reps
Ok thanks for sharing with the class today
Culver City...where I'm watching this video now, and where my gym currently lives
Would doing these help increase my normal squat? And could i do these after my normal squats
Yes but i'd do them on separate days
His talking style reminds me a little of Professor Frink. I don't know why.
I was always told to keep the chest up and hinge at the hips. I couldn't see her squatting with some decent weight leaning so far over like that. Might be snap crackle and pop action 😔
I agree
I've seen plenty of people mangae super high loads (180 Kilos) with this load. It entirely depends on your morphology, what it will look like.
how NOT to box squat...
*How to do Box Good Mornings
Wow that was hard to watch
Give a person a fish ,you feed them. Teach a person to fish, you permanently empower them. What the heck was I watching?
Hi Rip would the box squat be a reasonable variation for the Wednesday in the Texas Method?
Torben545 I'd like to know that, too
Works better for a medium day in an HLM program. I prefer light day on TM to just be a light day. - Not Rip
Starting Strength thanks!
Why not do this keeping the barbell over midfoot? Like a normal squat?
The bar is literally 3-4 inches in front of her midfoot. Terrible form.
What A FUCKING SQUAT
The grumpiest man in fitness
Horrible demo
Wtf
Rip the bar path looked forward of the middle of the foot is this normal in a box squat?
Michael Chung the bar is a small percentage of her body weight, so the bar will he forward of the mid-foot when the correct back angle is achieved. As the weight gets heavier and the combined COM approaches the barbell, the bar will move closer to the mid foot.
right, i remember read about that in the beginning of starting strength how the COM without the bar is at the middle of the hips but with the barbell the COM moves more upward toward the bar the heavier the bar is. by the way im looking to become a starting strength coach soon. i will be coming to one of your seminar soon.
We'll see you soon, then Michael.
Ah the ol' Starting Strength squatmorning
Do-wins??
Very nice
Hi Rip! I have a question, you mention the box squat is harder and shouldn't be performed by a novice. In one of the videos featuring Gus ("it's never too late" I think the video is called) Gus is sort of box squatting on a bench, so I'm curious to know the reasoning behind it, is it because she's at a more advanced age and so the rules change to accommodate for her physical form?
Thanks!
Isaac Campos different situation. People who aren't strong enough to squat will use a progressively shorter box until the squat is below parallel.
Starting Strength thanks! That explains it!
Wow if that is correct I have been off the mark for decades.....
There’s different ways to do it. No one way is right or wrong, you just need to decide what works for you.
Feel the Box...Be the Box!
nope....lol
I AM THE BOX
Great video thank you!
Everyone who is just focusing on the ladies form, to me it seems like she might be a low bar squatter... everyone squats differently . Any who i was more focused on his explanation.
One thing i was hoping to hear was BREATHING? do u hold the breath when you push up?
Yep hold the breath all the way to the top!
Squat or good morning?
This is wrong in so many ways 🤦🏻♀️
Care to explain why?
OMG Rip doin box squats?? Mind blown
Hey Mr. Rippetoe, huge fan and potential offspring of yours here, love your work. I need some advice regarding good morning-ing the weight excessively, in that I lose the bar forwards and grind reps out as I fatigue. This happens at 80%, I'm looking down, staying in the hips and maintaining a more horizontal back angle. I've tried resetting but as soon as I go above my bodyweight the problem is consistent. Max Aita suggested I strengthen my quads and if it helps, my working weight on deadlifts is a hundred lbs heavier than my squat
And this is pertaining to the rippetoe low bar back squat, no box.
Drive with the chest more. Don't not drive with the hips, do that, just also drive the chest up. Also, make sure your upper back is very tight. No, tighter.

Does anyone ever do front squats with a box?
why would you do front squats with a box ? front squats are assistance exercise for most people. If you are relying on front squats only you might hit a plato very quickly.
Yes I do them occasionally in this same manner with heels elevated, the main thing is to use the box as a stopping point instead of a pad to sit on.
Excuse me, but this is not box squat...
Hi Rip. Would this be the optimal squat method for someone with thoracic spine injuries? Normal squats @185 irritate my herniated disc(s), so I recently switched to box goblet squats with an upright spine throughout the motion. No pain, but the weight is only @50 currently. Any suggestions? Thank you.
joe momma is the optimal method for someone with thoracic spine injuries
I would suggest cable squats as there will be less spinal compression. You can hold the cable out front like a goblet squat or if you have access to a double cable, you can hold the cables out to the sides.
@CankleCankle Thank you, thats a great suggestion. I've been lucky in the 6 years since. My spine has improved and I can now barbell back squat 225x10.
What do you think about pause squats? I think they help tremendously when a weak back is the reason for lack of progress in weight
I think if youre box squatting to fix a weak back youre missing the point of a box squat. a weak back is almost never the reason of a lack of progress. weak hips often is tho.
Why not just do a pause squat?
Allan Bilodeau still coming back to argue with SS staff?
Allan Bilodeau we're also trying to reduce the moment arm at the knee with the box squat by trying to keep the shin more vertical.
Box squats are for fat powerlifters that don't like hitting depth
What if the box is below parallel?
dooshtoomun when you will be squatting high 1 rep maxes, you will notice how important it is to be accustomed to weights you are carrying, for powerlifters box squats parallel and up are an important means to get their nervous system used to handling such weights. This is part of the reason why equipped powerlifting is so different (training wise) from raw, its very important to have you body feel comfy under extremely high weights
Rip, i am a huge fan. Hats off to you and respect. I have a question:
I was obese, sedentary, and a piece of lard-glob from age of 22 to age 29. Then, i picked up barbell at age of 29 and started doing the big lifts (now i am 31). so for 2 years i tried to self-teach myself the squat and struggled with finding depth, thus i used a little box just to touch and go to feel the adequate depth. Now i do not use it anymore. Do you think this jeopardized my correct squat form? I stalled at 225 lbs for 8 reps (for 3 sets) after 2 years of suboptimal training (due to stress and work that impedes proper training).
Thanks for your insight.
Nutrition, water, and rest. All have to be on point.
She should be looking up not down then her neck posture will suck
There’s way too much butt wink with SS
I think Rip is showing signs of Parkinson's.
