As a kid who is Antiguan but never grew up or had any contact with my Antiguan side of my family thank you for your help on making me understand apart of the Caribbean culture
I'm from the Virgin Islands but was raised by an Antiguan. He isn't my biological father but that's my daddy regardless! Because of how good of a father he's been to me the Antiguan accent became the most beautiful sound to me in the world! It's literal music to my ears. My heart fills with so much joy whenever I hear it.
I’m ngl if u go to the south of Antigua like Urlings it sounds nuttin like Jamaican looool. The north side does. Idk where this woman is from though. The South is a different language real talk
A lot of Dominican words have French roots coz we were colonised by the French. So ‘mamzelle’ is just ‘broken french’ for ‘mademoiselle’. But ‘mamzelle’ defo has slang/sarcastic undertones though 🤣 Loved hearing these two authentic Caribbean accents 🇩🇲🇦🇬 Im Dominica-born living in London and this video made me miss home so much 💕🇩🇲🇩🇲🇩🇲🇩🇲
I am Jamaican and Antigua is the onlyyyyyyy of the islands that have an accent and dialect that are somewhat similar to that of Jamaica. It's amazing to me.
@@listenup2882 Those that you mentioned have certain similar verbiage but their sound is much different. Other than Antigua I'd say the only other closest that I've heard is Grenada. Based on the sound of their pronunciation.
You are correct. I’m Antiguan and Our accent or dialect is very similar to Jamaicans. And this goes back as far as my Grandmother in the 50s in the US when Americans thought everyone was Jamaican
As an “American” born to Antiguan parents but growing spending summers in Antigua, I recognize every single word and phrase and love to see the representation on YT. Definitely gotta subscribe. Also, tarl has many meanings, I like to think of it as the English version “not at all) ex Nuttin tarl go so = Nothing at all goes like that. 😆
I really, really enjoyed the video. Brad my husband was speaking to you through the computer screen when "Tarl " he said people in the villages of Wesley and Marigot use that all the time," nuten Tarl go so " he also says Dominica has different pronunciation depending on where you are, his friend from Grandbay was here also and had totally different words ,she only said "nightie" but all other answers were different. Please come with part two (2) good stress relief during this Covid-19 period.
USVI born and Antigua raised HERE!!! Loaferette brought it back with Sparin. And yes "Tarl" or "nuh" (no) is used in many variations. Big up aryu self! 🇦🇬🇦🇬🇦🇬🇻🇮🇻🇮🇻🇮
Tarl is one of those words that means so many things. Yes it depends on the situation and facial expression. It’s comical and for emphasis we’ll say tarl tarl tarl. And yes we say “harfslip”

The word " Tarl" is a contraction of "at" and "all" in the Antigua and Barbuda dialect, depending on the context. So, If someone tells you a crazy story you do not believe, you say "Nutten tarl can go so!" Nothing at all can go so."
It's mostly used in surprising or shocking situations. For instance, someone just walks up to you and give you a slap in the face. You say, " Wah di joke yah tarl!" Meaning what kind of joke is this at all.
As a kid who is Antiguan but never grew up or had any contact with my Antiguan side of my family thank you for your help on making me understand apart of the Caribbean culture

For the word "punch" we say "tump" in antigua
There is also the slang instead of saying greedy we say u "raben"
She gave up her antiguan accent to fit in?

The word theater was used for the operating room at the hospital. I grew up knowing that as theater and you may still hear it among older Antiguans.

Interesting! I’ll have to ask brad.

I think "no" is more like "nuh" but this was fun to watch!!! Ps i wish Brad had said "moda ass" lol lol all time fav
Tavia Joseph yes but the category was unrecognizable words so I chose to say Tarl.... as tarl means no.
USVI born and Antigua raised HERE!!! Loaferette brought it back with Sparin. And yes "Tarl" or "nuh" (no) is used in many variations. Big up aryu self! 🇦🇬🇦🇬🇦🇬🇻🇮🇻🇮🇻🇮

We say tarl/no in Dominica my parents use this a lot especially woodfordhill side
Pickney too
Antiguan American hereeee I’ve never heard the accent though & I love it
We also say "nah" for "no". 🇩🇲
Antigua passi 🇦🇬
Island that I love
yaaasss :D
Tarl has different meanings cause there is "nutten tarl"....probably used to emphasize the nothing 🤷🏾♀️
But awa is patwa and no is english, so we can say both
🇦🇬🇦🇬🇦🇬 for no we'd say tarl..... Or nuh!
Antiguans say "nuh" for no... tarl can be used differently in any sentence, but I wouldn't really say it's used as "no"
Number three is pronounced free as in, you are free to go . If you from the northern part of the island then you would pronounce it like tree.
papamet.... is a stable....LOve the video
Thanks sooo much. And my fav!
Love it 😀
