I'm from Dominica and absolutely loved this video. I'm over here smiling and feeling happy because of how much information it was able to put out there in the short space of time.
Shellyna John is the purple parrot the mountain chicken y'all eat? One of my coworkers was from Dominica and she told me about mountain chicken or something. Just curious. I'm from Trinidad BTW.
Lady Love The only time I’ve ever heard “mountain chicken” is when people refer to eating frogs. Just like “mountain oysters” are really bull testicles that some people eat. I looked online & it is what I thought: frogs. Here’s the link: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leptodactylus_fallax
I'm an idiot, I always thought Dominica was another name for the Dominican Republic. Much like Czechia and the Czech Republic. Thank you Barby for clearing that up :)
Minecraftnewplayer Are you dumb? He has realized his mistake and he said that on his comment and do not assume anyone american if they make mistakes on geography. Not all americans are dumb or fat! You also spelled "dumb" wrong, geez. You minecraft kids not only disrespect other's opinion but judge them for their mistakes even when they have realized and admitted that he had made a mistake. Before judging people's mistakes, you need to think again because you're making a mistake being in the part of a cancerous fanbase.
Why should most of the Americans have any knowledge about the Commonwealth of Dominica it was one smallest both geographically and demographically nations in the world. Most of the world population even don't know that the anglophone Dominica exits. Plus there over 1.873 million (2015) Dominican-Americans/Dominican Republic so the hispanophone country would be more known in the United States.
Fun fact about Dominica: there are so many 'abandoned' plantation fruit crops scattered all over the island that even though it's a fairly poor nation, the homeless need not starve, as there is food available everywhere.
This small island holds a special place in my heart. I volunteered to help rebuild one of the churches that got destroyed in Hurricane Maria, and I immediately fell in love with the beautiful terrain, the extremely friendly people, the coral reefs, and the bread. One does not go to Dominica without trying the bread. It’s amazing.
as a chinese mainlander, we couldn't care less..... it's not like they r going anywhere. But if one day they do become their own country then i will have problem with them using my country's language as their official language. They should be like Koreans, in the old time korean's official language was chinese, but then they wanted to have their own culture so they created nowadays known as korean and made it as their country's official language.
+Commander Erik funny history, but i dont think that a nation need to have his own language to become a independent country.. Personally, I'll love to travel to different places without have to care about how things will be if i doesn't be able to communicate..
*Commander Erik* I think what you're saying is ridiculous. It's like saying the U.S. should've created their our language when fought for their independence.
Claudio Zúñiga Gamarra U.S English and british English sounds different, some grammars are different too. But Taiwai's Chinese and Mainland China's Chinese are absolutely the same( other than they write in traditional chinese, and mainland uses modern chinese in writing)
The flag of the the second Spanish Republic had a purple band, that is the only national flag I can think of, their are also a few Spanish regional flags that have purple as well.
Very nice! You actually pronounced the island's name right, and most everthing else. The only mistake I caught was at 2:09, you said that Dominica is NOT part of the commonwealth, that it is a republic. Correction: The island is part of the commonwealth, hence the official name of the island: The Commonwealth of Dominica.
Yeah, it does. I think want barbie is saying is Dominica is one of the few former British colonies whose head of state is Not Queen Elizabeth II. Its a republic having its own president.
Sasha Saiko Brie is correct. Dominica may take part in commonwealth but we are no considered as par of the Commonwealth realm something i found out after the passing of hurricane maria. The British were evacuating their citizens and there were 3 persons who had not got on the liat flight and needed to get to Barbados where the brits were going to. They took the Bajan and the Lucian but left the Dominican lady back. Reason given my the commander was Dominica is not a commonwealth country. According to him they were only permitted to airlift Dominicans if it was a medical emergency case. This is not hear say since I approached him with the request for the 3 individuals.
I'm Haitian and I had a friend from Dominica in High School and we became friend because I didn't speak english He was the only person that I was able to speak with In my Geology class cause he spoke Dominican Kweyol and I speak Haitian Kreyol. There was a lot of difference in our creoles but I understood him better than he did because I speak french too so I kinda know where the different words he used originate. But he spoke English as his other language so I would have to explain some of my creole words to him.
I just thought of something, what if that boiling lake is really a fountain of youth? Maybe THAT'S HOW everyone lives so long!!! Enjoy #DOMINICA!! One of the most intriguing island nations in the world!
I visited there 2 years ago and loved it so much! Wow, it's a beautiful country and I live in the Caribbean (Grenada) so I k is what I'm talking about. Wanted to extend my stay! Will be back soon.
Thanks for that disclaimer in the beginning. Its so horrible when youre trying to explain that you're from Dominica and all of a sudden some person asks "Dominican Republic?" Like...did you hear me say the Dominican Republic. Its late but, thanks for helping to educate the world about my homeland, its appreciated and, honestly, i didnt even realise we had so many. I guess when you're raised and accustomed it becomes second nature.
Hey Barby, I just wanted to say that thanks to this video, I know where Dominica is when it's mentioned in news about hurricanes! I'm sure they probably don't want to be known for that, but it's still true nonetheless. Anyhow, thank you for your dedication to this series, there are so many places I simply would not know exist without them, and these are fantastic for learning just a little bit more about the world.
I'm living in Dominica and I must say your video is the closest thing to what we needed in like forever 😂. Also don't worry we have roads so you won't have to drive through any rain forests.

I got to visit Dominica this summer and I loved it! I stayed on a sustainable farm in the interior, near Rosalie Bay and got to work closely with NET, and ended my trip in Portsmouth staying in a cute little cabin right on the beach! I was doing a Sea Turtles studies class and got to participate in a leather back nest excavation. The people were all lovely, happy to stop and chat. I actually got a chance to talk to someone who really enjoyed eating sea turtle eggs! It was very very interesting to hear his perspective as someone who is very very interested in conserving and protecting sea turtles! I did all the big things like visiting the Emerald Pool, Middleham Falls, and the Boiling Lake which were all stunning and well worth all the hiking and long drives over bumpy roads. We also went whale watching, did a tour of the Indian River, and got to snorkel the Champagne Reef! I wish I could go back and do all the things I didn't get to do in Dominica!
I've been a geography fiend since the age of 8 and I'm now 22. I used to read atlases for fun but did not know of the existence of Dominica until 2015.

I went diving at champagne bay with my dad, it was the most beautiful I've ever seen. Also since this island is heavily forested and volcanic it is almost more similar to Hawaii compared to other neighboring Caribbean islands.
8:18 oof that’s the chinese debt trap. China always offers small countries infrastructure projects and when China asks for the money and the country doesn’t have it China can use their ports.
***** i meant official country flags not useless naval and religious flags. If we only go by that dominica and the northern mariana islands are the only country flags to use purple.
Guadeloupe or st Lucia would be Dominicans closest Caribbean friend. As a Trinidadian they are family But I feel they are closest to the first 2 those two.

Dominica isn't the only Eastern Caribbean islands to still have native Caribs on it. It has the most indigenous people of any island on it, but almost all the islands still have their native people. You even mentioned native people in the Antigua & Barbuda video.
Dominica, officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is an island country in the Caribbean. The capital, Roseau, is located on the western side of the island. It is geographically situated a part of the Leeward Islands chain in the Lesser Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. The island is located near Guadeloupe to the northwest and Martinique to the south-southeast. Its area is 750 km2 (290 sq mi), and the highest point is Morne Diablotins, at 1,447 m (4,747 ft) in elevation. The population was 71,293 at the 2011 census.
Lol nope. Although Dominica has the only full-blooded Caribs in the caribbean, nearly all of the islands still have people with significant Carib blood.
Jon Smith Yes, virtually all of the eastern caribbean islands have carib descendants whether a few dozen or a few thousand, although it is thought that Dominica has the only full-blooded caribs. However, on all the islands, european blood and african blood are the vast majority.

Thank you for saying positive things about the islands in the Caribbean. They go so unnoticed (except for Jamaica). I'm sure they appreciate that
Caribbean islands look so peaceful and quiet for an outsider like me.
@no one I mean, quiet in a good a way, with a relaxed vibe, not in a bad way (boring).
I visited Dominica a few years ago and it was amaaaazing. Best part though? No annoying bugs when you go in the rainforest. It was bliss.
That is a HUGE selling point as they're (bugs) usually a breaking point for me
thanks for visiting... you are welcomed back whenever you like

"We used to speak french" doesn't translate in "Nous avons utilisé de parler parler français" but in "nous parlions français dans le passé"
6:22 I confirm that. That mum comes from Martinique and when her and her schoolmates went to Dominic to improve their english, they only spoke Kweyol.
Dominica isn't the only Eastern Caribbean islands to still have native Caribs on it. It has the most indigenous people of any island on it, but almost all the islands still have their native people. You even mentioned native people in the Antigua & Barbuda video.
Probably meant full bloodied
fully bloodied
Ray Charlies Yeah thats what i think too lol.
most likely than not they are from Dominica and migrated to other islands like Antigua which has a significant population of Dominicans
it's the only island with full blooded natives who preserved their culture. Every other island they're mixed with other groups.
yes!!! thank you so much for this video. you did a great job.

Wow so cool! I always thought the Caribs had all died off or assimilated into other cultures.
Yes really cool!
I got Carib in me.. (I'm mixed from Dominica)
+Jon Smith Yeah, English... But not French Creole. (My parents can tho..)
It makes me so happy to see this, especially after what Maria has done to it ☺
What I will remember: *Pirates of the Caribbean was shot here*
